Are you Grumpy?
One quick way to become
enthused again

June was the hottest month in more than 20 years
in many areas of the country. One of the installation
managers I work with wasn’t having any fun. He was
depressed and dreaded coming to work. His attitude
was rubbing off on the field crews.
The remedy - simple.
I made him find something to complement each
crew member on every day. He did it. Now, a month
later, he’s feeling better and the field employees are
feeling better. Work has improved too.
When it is hot you usually are so busy that you
can’t see straight. And, you have so many things on
your to do list that you feel that all you are doing is
putting out fires. You are tired and grumpy.
If you are tired, and grumpy, guess what? Your
employees, who are also probably tired, get grumpy.
Then, your company attitude goes down. You
aren’t cheerful on the telephone with customers. Your
grumpiness even rubs off on your customers.
The death spiral has begun.
The quick and easy way to eliminate the grumpiness death spiral - say thank you.
Every day find a way to say thank you to your
field and office personnel. When you are sincere, you
can’t be grumpy. You will feel better just by saying it.
Then, your attitude picks up and everyone’s attitude
in the office picks up.
Tell your field employees you appreciate their
hard, sweaty work in the hot sun. Bring them an ice
cream cone (or bar). They will appreciate it and you
will feel a lot better.
Saying thank you at this time of year - and
throughout the year helps build morale in busy and
slow times. Do it. It takes less than a minute per em-
ployee. You will enjoy coming to work and so will
your employees.

Your customers want assurance that you ARE
there when they need you. ARE is an acronym first
told to me by Brett M. Judd, a colleague who works
with business owners and their famillies/customers:
A: attentive, accessible - I can reach you when I
need you
R: Responsive - when I reach you do you respond
quickly?
E: Engaged - excited about helping you
The first part of ARE you there is simple - answer
the telephone. Being on the first page of a Google
search doesn’t cut it. Your prospective customers
want to talk to you.
Brenda, my assistant, needed a plumber. The one
she had used disappeared. Her daughter gave her a
referral. Brenda called the referral at 8:15 AM and got
his voice mail. This would have been an easy customer for him - it was a referral! However, he didn’t
call back all day. He failed at the R: he didn’t respond
quickly.
So, Brenda did an Internet search. It took several
more phone calls to find a plumber. Many who were
listed on the first page of Google didn’t answer their
phones! They failed at A!
The plumber that Brenda found was great at
E: they were helpful, answered her questions, and
sounded excited about her business.

cause it’s hot, and those of you looking forward to
the days when it will be hot, remember these seven
things:
1. Now is the time to generate revenue and profit.
It’s the time to take your flat rate up $25 to $50 per
hour; especially if you haven’t raised your rates in at
least a year.
2. Save 1% of every dollar that comes in the door.
Cash flow is plentiful right now. Save a little. You will
still have enough to operate your business.
3. Save all maintenance sales dollars that come in
the door. See #2. You won’t need the cash right now.
4. Remember that your technicians need to sleep.
They can work only so long each day. You need to let
them rest after 12 to 14 hour days.
During the first busy rush you could probably
employ 3 or more additional technicians and still not
get everything done. Dispatchers have to say when
the first available appointment is. Service agreement
customers come first. Then, everyone else. That is the
priority.
5. If it will take an additional hour or two to finish
a replacement job, then do it on overtime. It is much
cheaper than having to go back the next day.
6. Keep water in the trucks. Field employees need
to drink water throughout the day. It helps keep them
alert and less tired.
7. Say thank you. This is the time of year that
everyone is working really long hours. Saying thank
you goes a long way. And, remember to say thank you
to wives and significant others. (Send flowers... as one
of the contractors I work with does. These go a long
way toward understanding what happens when their
spouses come home tired and grumpy after a long,
hot day).

Annual Inspector Panel

The July SFACA Program Meeting was held at
the Sheraton Suites in Plantation at 6pm on July 8th.
The evening consisted of The Annual Inspector Panel
This popular annual forum was designed to encourage
dialogue between city and county inspectors and contractors regarding areas of mutual concern and interest. There was a lot of interest about the new wind load
guidelines. The panel all agreed to make sure that you
have the proper approved wind load documentation.
The August SFACA Program Meeting will be held
at the Sheraton Suites in Plantation at 6pm on August
5th. The program topic is the Pros and Cons to Statewide E-Permitting Process. Paul Bollenback will lead
an informative discussion about the logistics and road-
blocks of establishing a statewide e-permitting process
including: what the process might look like and the
impact on the contractor and local building departments. Bollenback is uniquely qualified to understand
the issue from the perspective of both a seasoned air
conditioning contractor and a recent building official
for the City of Naples.

years ago. He told all of us in attendence that he was
accepting the house in part on behalf of Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, who was killed recently by Mohammad
Youssuf Abdulazeez in Tennessee.
“I believe, and I’m accepting this home on behalf
of Thomas as well because he was a good man,” Ellis
said holding back tears.
During his tour in Iraq in 2005, Sullivan helped
Ellis after a grenade explosion. “We had already finished the entire tour. We had six days left, and I got hit
with a grenade blast to the Humvee,” Ellis said. “He
was one of the guys who helped pick me up when I
got hurt and put me in the Humvee. That’s how close

Southeast Florida Territory. In 1998, Broan-NuTone
merged and Bob was promoted to Senior Territory

MVP numerous times in his career.
In retirement, Bob will spend plenty of his time
with his lovely wife of 48 years, Diane, two sons
Robert Junior and Scott and their wives and grandchildren. Bob plans to retire in the Ocala area while
playing many rounds of golf and taking numerous

Today, there is a pill for everything. If you have a
headache, you take a pill. There is a pill for diabetes;
a pill for nausea; a pill to pump you up; a pill to calm
you down. But what about a pill for business?
If there were a pill that would make you a better
business person, would you take it? Sure you would.
What would it cost? If you could buy a pill that
would make you a better business person for less than
the cost of a Starbuck’s cup of coffee, would you buy
it? Think hard. Weigh the pros … weigh the cons.
I found my pill! It’s the Florida Air Conditioning
Contractors Professional Alliance … also known as
Florida-ACCPA.
There’s nothing magical about it. What makes
Florida-ACCPA special is its concern for the HVACR
Contractor. Their number one mission is to make you
the best HVACR person in every area of your business.
Just what are the functions of our business? Let’s

U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and airsource heat pumps totaled 737,173 units in May 2015,
down 10.0 percent from 819,477 units shipped in May
2014. U.S. shipments of air conditioners decreased 9.9
percent, to 499,250 units, down from 554,348 units
shipped in May 2014. U.S. shipments of air-source
heat pumps decreased 10.3 percent, to 237,923 units,
down from 265,129 units shipped in May 2014.
Year-to-date combined shipments of central air
conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased
5.8 percent, to 3,041,953 units, up from 2,873,898
units shipped in May 2014. Year-to-date shipments
of central air conditioners increased 6.3 percent, to
1,976,501 units, up from 1,859,252 units shipped during the same period in 2014. The year-to-date total
for heat pump shipments increased 5.0 percent, to
1,065,452 units, up from 1,014,646 units shipped during the same period in 2014.

The FEFPA Summer Conference was held at
the Naples Grande Beach Resort on July 7th-10th.
Throughout the conference the panelists were engaged in discussions which challenged traditional
thinking in public education. There were sessions on
legal issues, new trends, project delivery, technical
aspects of facilities planning and more.
The Florida Educational Facilities Planners Association (FEFPA) was started in the early 1960’s
as a cooperative effort between a small group of
school districts’ facilities planners and the Department of Education, Office of Educational Facilities
(OEF). When the community colleges came into being, those planners began to participate and recently,
along with university planners, practicing architects,
engineers, product manufacturers, and vendors have
been encouraged to participate and become members
and associate members.

When Dry Bulb Temperatures Aren’t Enough
A valuable field measurement used for troubleshooting by technicians is dry bulb temperature.
However results from this test can be misapplied or
used to make various incorrect assumptions. Let’s
take a look at the proper application of dry bulb temperature, its limitations, and what you can add to it for
some real diagnostic value.
A Common Misinterpretation
Dry bulb temperature is the temperature of the
air measured with a standard thermometer, not an infrared thermometer. When thinking about air temperature, it’s dry bulb temperature that’s typically considered. Since dry bulb temperatures are measured in
the cooling mode, they’re often used to help interpret
how much heat is being removed by the HVAC system.
This interpretation can easily trick a technician
into thinking a system is problem-free, when in reality there are underlying problems. For example, it’s
commonly thought that a system operating with a 16
to 20 degree temperature drop across the evaporator
coil is good to go. There are a lot of variables being
ignored and assumptions being made with this conclusion.
Adding Fan Airflow
While a 16 to 20 degree dry bulb temperature
drop may be acceptable in some parts of the country,
in drier climates it isn’t. The reality is that temperature drop across a coil alone doesn’t provide enough
information to verify proper operation or refrigerant
charge of an HVAC system.
For example, proper fan airflow is being assumed
with a target temperature drop like 16 to 20 degrees.
This is often incorrect. Many systems just don’t move
enough airflow across the coil – something that won’t
show up in dry bulb temperature readings alone. Additional measurements must be taken to verify proper
operation. Fan airflow is the first measurement that
needs to be added to dry bulb temperature drop for it
to have any real meaning.
The easiest and quickest way to obtain this value
is to measure static pressure and plot it on the manufacturer’s fan performance data. This value will give
you a good idea of the amount of air moving across
a coil. If airflow is within the proper range of 350 to
400 cfm per ton, you’re doing great. If not, there’s
more work to be done.
The Result is Sensible Heat
When fan airflow is added to dry bulb temperature change, a new world of opportunity opens. These
two measurements are components of the sensible
heat formula. The sensible heat formula moves you
one step closer to understanding how well a cooling
system really is performing.
The sensible heat formula is: CFM x Δt x 1.08 =
Sensible BTUs
Sensible heat is a form of heat that you can feel. In
the cooling mode of operation, sensible heat is what
drops the temperature inside a building as the cooling
equipment removes heat. When sensible heat is measured live in the field, it can be compared against the
manufacturer’s engineering data for the current testing conditions. This allows you to be sure that portion
of the cooling system is operating as intended.
Unfortunately sensible heat alone can’t always be
used to verify the total performance of cooling equipment. There is likely moisture being removed by the
cooling system that needs to be accounted for as well.
This means another type of temperature measurement will need to be taken that allows you to determine the affect of moisture removal on the cooling
equipment’s capacity.
In next months article, we’ll take a look at how
you can use wet bulb temperatures to determine how
much of an impact the moisture removal of a cooling
system is really having.
Don’t minimize the importance of measuring dry
bulb temperature drop across a coil. It’s a valuable
measurement that simply needs to be combined with
other test results to take advantage of its real potential. When the use of these temperatures is expanded
to identify additional system deficiencies, they allow
you to uncover issues your competition doesn’t know
exist.

Cousins Air - Company Fishing Outing
On Saturday July 11th, 2015 Cousins Air Inc
decided it would be fun to charter out the Helen S
drift fishing boat for a company fishing and team
building trip. We thought this was a creative and
fun way to build a better bond between the newer
and older employees as well as between the field
and office staffs. We had a friendly competition for
the Biggest and smallest fish caught. Our Installer
Brad Peterson was awarded the biggest fish when he

competition runs May 1-Oct. 31 and encourages
Heating Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) wholesaler members to recycle mercury thermostats.

Instruments and Tools
How accurate is
your diagnosis? Have
you checked the calibration of your tools lately?
Every instrument and
tool has a tolerance. For
instance, take a gauge
that reads (indicates) 100 psig. If the gauge has a
10% tolerance, the actual pressure could be anywhere from 90 psig to 110 psig. The same concept
applies to temperature measurement devices. The
real problem with tolerances is that if, for example,
your low side gauge could be reading 10% low, and
your high side gauge could be reading 10% high,
then you really don’t know how accurate your readings are.
Calibration The routine measurement of super-
heat or subcooling makes calibration errors worse
because the measurement values are so small. Say
you have a ‘target’ superheat of 10F, yet your temperature tool is reading 10% low and your pressure
gauge is reading 10% high. Your critical final superheat or subcooling measurements will be incorrect. Depending upon whether the measurements
are reading high or low, you may make incorrect
airflow correction or refrigerant charge correction
recommendations. Using high-quality measuring
equipment could mean that the tolerances are much
smaller to begin with, but even top-quality equipment needs to be calibrated periodically. Higher or
lower altitude and such things as rough handling
can result in equipment moving out of calibration.
Some digital equipment automatically compensates
for this dynamic and self-calibrates. Analog equipment most likely does
not.
Not taking the necessary calibration steps
may result in making
repairs that are not appropriate. Worse yet,
you might tell your customer or boss that repairs are needed when
no repairs were truly required at all. Keep your
instruments correctly
calibrated so that when
you take measurements
to assess a system’s performance, your measurements will be tighter, and the likelihood of
an accurate diagnosis
will be greater. Using

HARDI Vice President Professional & Program Development. “In fact, half of our attendees responded to
a survey after the conference and 98 percent of them
said they would attend another Emerging Leaders
event. It’s very encouraging for our industry that our
future leaders are so engaged and dedicated to maximizing their potential.”
HARDI also used the event to launch a new
graduation track for the Emerging Leaders program.
Those in the Emerging Leaders program can complete
a combination of event participation, coursework and
leadership assessments to progress through the program, earning a concrete accolade for their efforts.
Based on feedback, it appears that about two-thirds
of Emerging Leaders plan to opt-in to the graduation
track.

This year, James accomplished 3 of 5 podium
finishes in his first Florida Winter Tour Event at just
7 yrs. of age. He closed out the event in 4th Place
overall of 32 of the best drivers from around the
world. James must race older more experienced

CO Detection Research Projects
May Impact Future Requirements Fujitsu Launches
models did activate early at the 70ppm threshold at
10,000 feet and 12,800 feet above sea level.
Based on this information, a proposal to add high
altitude performance test protocols to the ANSI/UL
2034 product standard is currently being reviewed by
the Standards Technical Panel (STP). Once the proposal is approved by the STP, a future compliance will
be established for all carbon monoxide alarms and detectors.
2. Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF)
Research Project: The goal of the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) initiative is to determine
if CO gas is capable of diffusing through solid walls.
This is important since current model codes require
CO detection in or near “sleeping rooms” of newly
constructed one- and two-family dwellings, hotels,
dormitories, apartment buildings, hospitals, and nursing homes that have a permanently installed fuelburning appliance or have an attached “communicating” garage. However, the model codes do not require
CO detection if there are no “communicating openings” between an attached garage and the occupied
areas of the building.
In 2013, an article published in the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA) concluded
that CO is capable of diffusing across single-and
double-layer gypsum wallboard. In 2014, the FPRF
formed a Task Group to review the JAMA report and
to initiate a literature search on studies of CO diffusion through walls. The Task Group also intends to
identify incidents where CO dispersed from an attached garage to occupied areas of a building with no
communicating openings.
Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) published the final report Carbon Monoxide Diffusion
Project and the findings support the recent claim that
CO gas is capable of diffusing through walls at a rate
that presents a danger to building occupants. The report may bring about stricter requirements in the 2018
model codes by removing the “communicating opening” provision. However, additional research may be
needed to effect a change in the 2018 model codes.

Is CO detection an important part of what you do?
There are two research projects that may impact future carbon monoxide product certification and installation requirements: one is an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) initiative and the other is a Fire Protection
Research Foundation (FPRF) initiative.
Here’s some more detailed information about
these initiatives, and how they may have an effect on
future requirements.
1. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Research
Project: The goal of the UL initiative is to determine
if CO detection installed in high altitude applications
(between 5,000 and 12,000 feet above sea level) provides adequate life safety protection. The genesis of
this project actually started in 2009, when Colorado
signed a bill into law requiring CO detection in oneand two-family dwellings and rental properties. Soon
thereafter, several Colorado code authorities became
concerned whether CO alarms or detectors installed
in the Rocky Mountains would work properly. The
reason for their concern is that the current edition of
ANSI/UL 2034 does not contain test protocols to address the performance of CO alarms installed more
than 530 feet above sea level.
Then in 2011, UL formed a Task Group (TG) to
determine if CO alarms installed in altitudes up to
12,800 feet above sea level will activate within the
ANSI/UL 2034 specified alarm thresholds, and requested that UL assess the performance of current CO
alarms by conducting field sensitivity tests in Colorado.
As a direct result, UL collected 28 sample products from retail and internet outlets. The samples
represented variants of the existing certified sensing
technologies and were tested at the UL Northbrook
Illinois facility for normal operation and sensitivity
testing at approximately 560 ft above sea level. The
same samples (and the UL test chamber) were then
shipped to Colorado where a series of sensitivity tests
were conducted at 5,200 ft in Denver and 10,000 feet
in Breckinridge, followed by testing on Mt. Evans at
approx. 12,000 feet.
All 28 CO alarms activated within the respective
ANSI/UL 2034 alarm thresholds; however, several

The general trend toward downsizing is bringing
about material and refrigerant savings, thanks in a
large part to smaller-diameter, inner-grooved, thinwalled tubes.
Copper tubes with outer diameters of 7 mm, 6.25
mm and 5 mm are now used in residential and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration applications, ranging in size from large condensers for commercial applications to small units for cold vending
machines.
Such smaller-diameter copper tubes first appeared in window-type air-conditioners and evaporator coils for split systems as well as in outdoor condensers for residential applications. Initial manufacturing hurdles have been overcome and such tubes
have now become the industry standard for a wide
range of commercial, industrial, light commercial
and residential air-conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration applications.
Now we can ask “What’s next?” for the industry.
Several new tube technologies were briefly described
in a review paper given at the recent Ohrid Conference on natural refrigerants and also in a presentation at the 2015 ATMOsphere America conference.
For higher-pressure applications, e.g., R744 refrigeration, the tubes, fittings and components must
withstand high pressures. Plain and inner-grooved
seamless tubes and fittings are available in a highstrength copper-iron alloy known as CuFe2P (and
also known as C19400 or CW107C). The alloying
elements are iron, zinc, phosphorus and magnesium.
These alloys allow for a reduction of wall thickness
and hence less material usage. What’s more, existing
machines and tools usually can process these alloys,
and they are perfectly brazeable and weldable. These
alloy tubes can sustain pressures 100 percent higher
than standard ACR tubes. Various sized tubes for
refrigerant distribution typically are rated to handle
pressures up to 120 bar (i.e., 1740 psi or 12 MPa).
Another type of copper tube is made from deoxidized high phosphorus (DHP) copper, which is useful up to pressures of 120 bar, or more, depending on
the tube diameter and tube wall thickness.
The product literature of copper tube suppliers
should be consulted for more information.
To obtain the highest performance from air
conditioners made with small diameter tubes, it is
necessary to apply certain principles to the design
of fin-and-tube heat exchangers, including design
principles for tube-and-fin geometries and spacing,
fin-configuration and tube circuitry.
Research at leading international universities
has resulted in the development of new airside and
refrigerant-side correlations, particularly for 5 mm
MicroGroove tubes.
To make such correlations readily available to
HVAC&R system designers and heat exchanger engineers, the Copper Alliance is working with Optimized Thermal Systems Inc. to implement the newly
developed correlations into CoilDesigner® software,
a proprietary heat exchanger simulation and design
optimization tool developed by the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE) at the University of Maryland.
Smaller-diameter MicroGroove copper tubes are
the current benchmark for heat exchanger coils but
are not the final word. Investment in research and
development is ongoing on new copper tube technologies that could enable new levels of heat transfer efficiency and capacity for next generation heat
exchangers.

its Miami, Florida, Parts Center. The Account Manager – Parts is responsible for all functions relating to developing and maintaining Parts

Orlando, Florida, heating, ventilation and air conditioning Parts Center. The Parts Store Manager is responsible for the successful management and leadership of a Trane Commercial Parts Store/Center
including the management of Parts operations and developing personnel, markets, and product representation.
Customer Sales Associate - Port St. Lucie (1403225):
Trane Supply is in need of a Customer Sales Associate in its Port
St. Lucie, Florida, store. The associate is responsible for processing
customer orders and responding to customer’s inquiries, questions
or opportunities regarding the Parts Department services and seeks
remedies to ensure customer satisfaction and retention. Duties include selling and warranty administration.
