Diagnostic technology
• CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery
SSM Cancer Care partners with SSM Imaging to offer
unparalleled access to the latest advanced diagnostic
technologies. Technologies available at SSM Cancer
Care facilities include:
• MammoSite High Dose Rate (HDR) breast radiation
• MRI
• Image-Guided Biopsies
• PET CT/SPEC CT
• Ultrasound Biopsy
• Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
• Digital Mammography
• Mammary Ductoscopy
• Nuclear Medicine Scan
• CT
In addition, SSM Cancer Care offers
Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) imaging
for diagnosis and staging of lung cancer.
Physicians perform transbronchial needle
aspiration (TBNA) via the trachea to
sample lung and thoracic lymph node
tissue, thus avoiding more invasive
procedures. EBUS is an outpatient procedure that may
be performed under moderate sedation in many cases.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) for the diagnosis
and staging of gastrointestinal malignancies is
another recent diagnostic advance available through
SSM Cancer Care. The endoscope provides detailed
ultrasound images of the upper or lower digestive
tract and surrounding organs. Like EBUS, EUS is an
outpatient procedure usually performed under sedation.
treatment
SSM Cancer Care physicians develop individualized
treatment plans that take advantage of the best
practices and procedures available. Patients receive
optimal treatment in convenient locations. Many of
these treatments are minimally invasive, preserving
patients’ quality of life.
Treatment modalities include:
• Chemotherapy
• Radiation Therapy (including intensity modulated
radiotherapy, external beam, image-guided
radiation therapy)
2
• TomoTherapy Hi-Art System
• Brachytherapy
• Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery
• da Vinci Si Surgical System (available at SSM DePaul
Health Center)
• Other minimally invasive cancer surgeries
Cancer Conferences
Multiple specialists meet weekly to review and
discuss all new cancer cases to ensure patients are
getting the best treatment for their individual circumstance.
Steering teams
Physician led breast and thoracic steering teams
made up of multiple specialists work together to:
• Achieve coordination, communication and
consistency among medical disciplines
• Ensure adherence to quality measures
program–wide
• Obtain best possible care and patient
experience based on best practices
• Uncover ways to improve diagnosis
and treatment process
oncology staff
SSM Cancer Care employs specially trained and
educated support personnel such as dedicated thoracic
cancer and breast cancer nurse navigators, and
certified oncology nurses (ONCs).
Nurse navigators (breast & lung):
• Coordinate tests to make them convenient, trying to
get as many tests scheduled together on a single day
and site, for instance
• Make sure the all the connections are made so that
patients enjoy a relatively seamless and expeditious
cancer care experience
OCN Certified nurses have:
electronic Health record
• gained additional knowledge and expertise to
extensively care for patients with an actual or
potential diagnosis of cancer.
• achieved an advanced level of skill to be better
equipped to recognize problems and take action
Using a systemwide electronic health record, SSM
physicians access information from any Internetenabled computer, sharing patient data as needed
to optimize diagnosis and treatment in a timely,
coordinated manner.
Clinical research
SSM Breast Care
One particular research program that is unique to
this area is the International Early Lung Cancer Action
Program (I-ELCAP). SSM Cancer Care at St. Joseph
Health Center is the only facility in the state to serve as
an I-ELCAP screening site. I-ELCAP has been underway
for more than five years and is an international collaborative effort to study early diagnosis of lung cancer
using low-dose screening CT of the chest paired with
smoking cessation programming. Recent findings
from the NIH national lung screening trial indicates a
20% reduction in mortality for smokers undergoing CT
screen and recommend programs such as the I-ELCAP
for lung cancer screening.
SSM Breast Care provides the full spectrum of care
for breast diseases including diagnosis, treatment and
support services. Our program has skilled professionals,
state of the art technology, genetic counseling, nurse
navigators and six convenient locations. To learn more
about SSM Breast Care, go to the SSM Breast Care
tabbed sheet in SSM Capabilities Binder.
education & Support
At SSM Cancer Care, we never lose
sight of the fact that we treat people,
not cancer. Information on supportive
services and additional resources is
available through SSM Cancer Care’s
Cancer Resource Centers, located at
most of our facilities.
Ongoing support is provided through
a variety of educational and therapeutic
programs. These include:
• Exercise Classes
• Look Good Feel Better, a program
affiliated with the American Cancer
Society
• Breast Cancer Support Groups
• Cancer Care Support Groups
• I Can Cope
• Tobacco Free for Life
SSM Cancer Care’s affiliation with Saint Louis
University benefits patients and physicians by allowing
for additional participation in clinical research trials. In
this way, SSM Cancer Care is not only providing current
best practices, but is helping to transform and improve
the future of cancer treatment. Research trials will be
conducted in SSM Cancer Care facilities, and subjects
will enjoy the same convenience that they do to obtain
other services.

Sleep apnea
• One of the most common and dangerous
sleep disorders.
• Literally causes a person to repeatedly stop
breathing through the night.
• Affects more than 12 million Americans, according
to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Basic monitoring includes:
Polysomnography – standard overnight sleep study
that uses digital sensors to record body functions during
sleep.
Multiple sleep latency test – measures how long it takes
for the patient to fall asleep during the daytime and
helps determine the cause of severe daytime sleepiness.
Maintenance of wakefulness test – helps pilots and professional drivers prevent dangerous performance errors
by determining how well they can stay alert.
Daytime studies – specifically designed for those who
work at night and sleep during the day.

Body mass index (BMI) is a numerical value of weight in relation to height. BMI is a good indicator of healthier weights
for adult men and women, regardless of body frame size. Higher BMIs (30 and above) are associated with significantly
increased health risks in some people.
Related Health Conditions
• Type 2 Diabetes – A long-term metabolic disorder
in which the body produces, but resists, insulin.
Because of excess weight, obese individuals develop
a resistance to insulin, which controls blood sugar.
While Type 2 diabetes may occur regardless of someone’s age, gender, or body mass, the disease tends
to be more severe in the obese.
• Osteoarthritis of Weight-Bearing Joints –
Osteoarthritis, one of the most common forms of
arthritis, is a chronic condition resulting in a breakdown of joint cartilage. Excess body weight on joints,
particularly knees and hips, results in rapid wear and
tear, and pain caused by inflammation. Similarly,
bones and muscles of the back are constantly
strained, causing disk problems, pain, and decreased
movement ability.
• High Blood Pressure/Heart Disease – Excess body
weight often results in high blood pressure (hypertension), which can cause strokes and heart and kidney
damage. Evidence shows that the age-related lifetime
risk of hypertension in men and women ages 45
to 54 will double as their average body mass index
(BMI) increases from 25 to 35. While hypertension
may occur regardless of age, gender, or body mass,
it tends to be more severe in the obese.

Overview
When a joyful pregnancy becomes a scary
medical condition due to fetal complications,
the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute is there to
provide the most comprehensive care in
middle America.
Our specialists at the St. Louis Fetal Care
Institute diagnose and treat serious congenital
problems in babies that are still in the womb,
offering the most comprehensive program in
Missouri and the surrounding states. We have
expertise in treatments ranging from minimally
invasive procedures to open fetal surgery.
Two coordinating nurses serve as invaluable
contacts for patients and their families at
a stressful time. They not only ensure that
all tests and procedures are scheduled
appropriately, but they walk patients through
the process, explaining each step of the way
and offering a shoulder to lean on.
A multidisciplinary team of surgical
and medical specialists supports the work of
the institute’s directors, Ed Yang, MD, PhD,
Fetal and Pediatric Surgeon, and Mike Vlastos,
MD, Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Locations
Initial consultations occur at Cardinal
Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Testing
and other procedures may take place at St.
Mary’s or Cardinal Glennon. While most fetal
surgeries are performed at St. Mary’s, our
highly skilled transport team is always ready to
move neonatal patients to Cardinal Glennon, if
necessary.
SSM St. Mary’s Health Center

SSM St. Mary’s Health Center specializes
in high-risk services (tertiary maternal-fetal
care) for expectant mothers. Focusing on
complicated deliveries for twins, triplets and
quads, the SSM Perinatal Center at St. Mary’s
features a high-risk pregnancy outpatient clinic
staffed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists
from Saint Louis University who are experts
at handling these challenges. In addition, St.
Mary’s antepartum inpatient unit is designed
to provide around-the-clock monitoring of
patients who have fetal operations and/or
have high-risk pregnancies to ensure the best
possible outcome during delivery.
SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical
Center and SSM St. Mary’s Health Center
partner to offer full fetal care services. To
complete this full spectrum
of fetal care, the Saint Louis
University School of Medicine
(Departments of Obstetrics/
Gynecology, Women’s
Health, Surgery and
Pediatrics) provides surgeons
and experts specializing
in the care of babies and
children with the most

SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center is
home to the all-private, 60-bed Dana Brown Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The unit is staffed by
specially trained neonatologists who care for newborn
babies no matter their condition. As a nationally
recognized pediatric hospital, Cardinal Glennon
also has pediatric surgical suites that are among
the most up-to-date in the country. We are
equipped for the most complex open and minimally
invasive procedures featuring Saint Louis University
pediatric specialists and surgeons who have
successfully cared for premature babies as young
as 23 weeks gestation.
Cardinal Glennon is also home to Footprints,
a program of advocacy and support for children
with serious, complex illnesses and their families.
The program provides care planning and coordination, continuity of care services, pain and
symptom management, and bereavement services.
Peer support may also be arranged through the
Footprints program.
Conditions and abnormalities
Among the conditions diagnosed and treated by the
Fetal Care Institute’s specialists:
• Congenital Cystic
Adenomatoid
Malformation (CCAM)
• Twin-Twin Transfusion
Syndrome (TTTS)
• Amniotic Band
Syndrome (ABS)
• Twin Reversed Arterial

• Congenital
Diaphragmatic Hernia
(CDH)
• Sacrococcygeal
Teratomas (SCT)
• Giant Neck Masses

• Hypoplastic Left Heart

Other types of conditions treated at the institute
include abdominal wall defects, CNS lesions, urologic
problems, congenital heart disease, craniofacial
anomalies, intestinal problems, limb problems, airway
problems, lung problems, hydrops, tumors and twin
abnormalities.
diagnostic testing
Facilities exist to perform a wide range of diagnostic
tests, including:
• Ultrasound
• Amniocentesis
• Chorionic villus sampling
(CVS)
• Fetal blood sampling
• Ultrafast MRI
• Genetic screening using
karyotype analysis and
gene array technology
• Fetal echocardiogram
• Diagnostic fetoscopy
therapeutic Fetal Procedures
Fetal transfusions, shunt placement and ablation
of lesions are among the many minimally invasive
procedures performed at the institute. Other
procedures include fetoscopic laser photocoagulation to
treat twin-twin transfusion syndrome and amniotic band
syndrome, as well as radiofrequency ablation to treat
twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence.
Open Fetal Surgery
When a life-threatening or devastating fetal condition
is detected, open fetal surgery may offer hope for
survival. Open fetal surgery involves making an incision
in the womb, performing surgery on the baby through
the incision, then resealing the womb so the pregnancy
may continue. Among the conditions that may require
this approach, a congenital diaphragmatic hernia is
assessed for severity and risk before a treatment
course is chosen. If a sacrococcygeal teratoma is
diagnosed, a resection
may remove the tumor
and restore adequate
fetal blood flow. Ex
utero intrapartum
treatments (EXIT)
may be utilized for
rare, life-threatening
anomalies, such as
airway obstruction
issues and anticipated
cardiac emergencies.
