Annual Report FYE 2014 - Food Bank for Larimer County
Programs & Partnerships for a Hunger-Free Larimer County FYE 2014 Annual Report July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 Dear Food Bank Friends, VISION A hunger-free Larimer County MISSION Provide food to all in need through community partnerships and hunger-relief programs. VALUES Integrity Accountability Efficiency Dignity After nearly three decades of providing food to all in need, in Fiscal Year 2104, we spent a considerable amount of time looking at where we’ve been and where we plan to go. To help guide us, Food Bank leadership and staff developed four strategic priorities for the next three years: Feed, Lead, Strengthen and Nourish. In formulating our tactics to achieve these priorities, partnerships played a key role. Without our partners, we would not have been able to provide food for more than 7.5 million meals to nearly 36,000 individuals in need last year. Partnerships are integral to our mission and will ultimately help us achieve our vision of a hunger-free Larimer County. Who are our partners? • Donors. Our donors provide us with food and funds to feed people in need. From retailers and farmers who donate surplus food to indviduals and corporations who donate funds, we are grateful for the generosity of our donors. • Volunteers. Our voulnteers work the day to day operations necessary to distribute the food. They sort, they repackage, they cook and clean. Our volunteers work hand in hand with us every day to provide food for all in need. • Agenices. Through our network of 85 partner agencies, we are able to cast a bigger net to feed more people in need. • Community. Our community partners provide knowledge, support and opportunties. They sponsor special events to raise food, funds and hunger awareness. In Fiscal Year 2014, partnerships also played a vital role in providing food to those impacted by the September floods. We worked with several organizations, including the local and national Red Cross, to help reach flood victims and determine their needs. Our donors provided food and funds. Volunteers offered to help sort and deliver food. And our partner agencies, especially those in Estes Park, helped extend our reach and distribute additional food. Whether it’s in our day to day operations or in a time of disaster, we are grateful to our devoted partners that share our passion make our work possible. Amy PezzaniDoug Dohn Programs Food Share In FYE 1014, Food Share, our fresh food pantry program with locations in Fort Collins and Loveland, offered free food to 28,669 unduplicated individuals. As a client choice, fresh food pantry, clients personally selected the items their households wanted and/or needed. We offered a variety of bread, dairy products, fresh fruits, and vegetables and other non-perishable food items. Food for Food Share was sourced from our partners, including local retailers, farms and backyard gardeners. On average, clients visited Food Share 3.5 times per month. Due to the generosity of our donors, we were able to provide enough food for more than one meal per day. This program makes our largest impact on hunger-relief in Larimer County. Nearly 80 percent of the food we distributed went to Food Share clients. Last fiscal year, Food Share served a variety of individuals, including seniors, students, children, disabled individuals, single parents, veterans and young families. Food Share Total Visits by Household: 188,340 Food Share Total Pounds Distributed: 7,355,999 Unduplicated individuals helped through Food Share By city of residence Fort Collins 15,889 Loveland 9,528 Homeless 702 Wellington 630 La Porte 421 Berthoud 392 Bellevue 148 Livermore 65 Windsor 51 Estes Park 48 Red Feather Lakes 40 Other 755 Total 28,669 1 Meal Per Day Each month, we provided Food Share clients with enough food for more than 1 meal per day. Programs Child Nutrition Kids Cafe - Meals & Snacks Kids Cafe is our primary child hunger program. Under the direction of our registered dietitian, our Kids Cafe provided children, ages 3-18, who are at risk of hunger, with healthy, made from scratch meals and/ or snacks. We partnered with sites througout Larimer County, including community centers and low income housing complexes to provide meals 12 months of the year. • 66,830 meals and 59,585 snacks were served to children at risk of hunger Kids Link - School Snacks The Food Bank sponsorsed 41 schools in Poudre and Thompson School Districts in FYE 2014. Schools with a 50%+ free and reduced population accessed snacks and fresh produce for free. These snacks were distributed to students who demonstrated signs of hunger during the school day and were also distributed during after school programs. • 128,520 healthy snacks Backpack - Weekend Food Packs Last fiscal year, the Backpack program was administered through partnerships with McKinney (Poudre School District) and Loveland Rotary (Thompson School District). The program provided homeless and near homeless children with a pack filled with child-friendly, nonperishable food for the weekend and/or school breaks. • 18,470 backpacks distributed to homeless and near homeless children 172,590 Meals 188,105 Snacks Programs Food Link The Food Bank partnered with 85 non-profit organizations in the community for its Food Link program. In FYE 2014, the Food Bank donated 1.38 million pounds of food to these agencies. This partnership saved these non-profits nearly $2.1 million, which they could then invest in critical local programming rather than food. Through our partnerships with local non-profit agencies, we are able to expand our reach and work towards our vision of a hunger-free Larimer County. Volunteers also give their hands to assist in nearly every aspect of our operation from cooking meals for our Kids Cafe program to staffing special events. In Fiscal Year 2014, we partnered with over 1,800 volunteers who generously contributed more than 30,000 hours – the equivalent to 14 full-time staff! These volunteers helped us collect, sort, repack and distribute over 9.1 million pounds of food! With the hearts and hands of dedicated volunteers, we are able to provide more food to our neighbors in need. 1,810 Volunteers 30,373 Hours Volunteers with 25+ Hours Becca Austin Jo Baietti David Baumgartner Deborah Bayliss Bill Beach Alan Beatty Cheri Benglen Jill Bennett Ronnae Berry Yangzhiwei Bi Linda Black Jeanne Bochnowski Marge Boehner Jeanette Boissy Vickie Boltz Carl Bosack Lynn Bosack Jim Boyd Terry Branstner Carla Breninger Jay Brinkman Linda Broekstra Ruth Brungardt Lester Bull Tim Burkhardt Jane Burnett Malia Cable Claire Calhoun Kylee Cardon Norma Carrasco Diana Cassi Diana Christopherson Jerry Clough Judy Clough Leah Cody Theresa Colby Janet Collins Jack Coman Richard Conn Marci Conradson Steve Constant Debbie Cook Barbara Cooper Carley Cooper Bob Copeland Patrick Costello Christine CsernicaHaas Ernie Cummins Fran Cummins Kate Davis Marti Dean Jeff Deaner Barbara DeBonte Susan Degutz Brint Deighton Tina Deringer Lynne Deur Melissa Dickinson Gary Dinkel Morgan Donnelly Marsha Dooley Nathan Dotson Phillip Drake Kathy Dufur Kelsie Dunn Don Edminster Tracy Evans Ana Fairchild Mary Fangman Barbara Fisher Pam Foster Julie Fowler Dennis Gardner Neil Garney Linda Garver Louisa Gibson Matt Giles Rosemarie Gittner Alex Giuliani Marge Goodall Doris Goodell Mark Goodell Dan Gould Pia Goulding Erika Graber Judy Gray Vicky Green Kathy Greenfeder Janie Griffin Kathe Haake Steve Haake Al Habenicht Sheila Hagaman Chris Hall Emma Hambury Tim Harris Amanda Harroun Jerry Hart Logan Hayes Ron Hedrick Steve Heller Candy Hergett Andrew Herzog Brigitte Hilse David Hines Mary Hines Sally Hooper Linda Hope Annie Hudnut Vern Hueske John Huiting Edward Hurtubis Pat Huth Stephen Huth Sheila Hyde Camille Ide Jim Ingram Tom Inscho Beth Jackson Bill Jackson Carol Jans Tom Jans Pam Johansen Camie Johnson Sharon Johnson Jeff Jones Jeff Kato Patrick Kavanaugh Susie Kelley David Kepler Cathy Kever Ethan Kever Jen Kiess Alida Kile Brennan King Tammie King Tyler King Debbie Kinning Marianne Kline Morgan Kobielusz Ann Koch Ben Koch Pete Koechley Marney Komives Glenn Kuhns Crystal LaMarr Maria Landstrom Jane Lederer Peter Lederer Tiffany Lehwald John Lindenbaum Mary Lou Linton Marva Litt Joyce Little Marilee Long Hermana Luke Ann Lundahl Terri Lupiezowietz Linda MacArthur Lisa Mackessy Ben Magsamen O’Linda Magsamen Christine Manda Danny Marston Marianita Matheson Julie Mathews Lari Mathewson Janel Matthias Jean McCabe Kim McConnellogue Donna McDaniel Erik McDonald Dick McKeown Karen McKissick Gene Meyer Jan Meyer Gloria Miles Kristell Mondragon Ruiz Cyndi Montano Scott Moore Phil Murphy Robin Murray Rodger Myers Margaret Nalls Jeanne Needham Kate Nelson Mark Newell John Nick Kathy Nicol Kathy Nicolai George Nielsen Diann Nygaard Suzanne O’Donnell Rita Ortiz Vanessa Palomares Elizabeth Pendleton Michelle Pendleton Susan Perry McKenna Pullen John Racicot Cathy Ratschkowsky Rich Ratschkowsky Mike Reagon Adam Reek James Rego Bob Reinert Bill Repert Muriel Richardson Virginia Riley Bill Risheill Glenice Risheill John Robinson Judi Robinson John Rowland Susan Rowland Larry Russell Lynda Russell Betty Russell-Smeaton Jeffrey Sameshima Dave Savage Bob Schroeder Barbara Sebek John Shepek Neil Sherrod Jeanne Shoaff Connie Sidder George Siffert Susan Siffert Vicki Siska Carol Slade Andrew Smalley Don Smeaton Veronica Smieja Jerry Smith Rosalee Smith Rosalie Smith Paula Smolaga Ed Sparling Andy Spinas Janelle Spinas Jace Spraker Ingrid Stahl Nicole Steffeck John Sterner Linda Sterner Norm Stiefel Don Stumpf John Sullivan Bonny Thomas Katlyn Thomas Andrew Thompson Milt Thompson Bridget Tisthammer Bonnie Torrey David Torrey Susan Tree Bill Tremblay Anita Trujillo Vince Trujillo Simon Turner Eric Vance Damon Vaughan Christine Vetter Silvia Viggiano Anand Vissa Vara Vissa Eric Wagner Melissa Walker Gail Wallis Lyn Warrick Sherrie Welch Janice Whitaker Margaret Wick Naomi Williams Robert Williams Dan Wrzesinski Eric Wurtz Ashley Yago John Young Nanette Young Gary Zook Partnerships Food Donors Billions of pounds of food go to waste each year in the United States. The Food Bank for Larimer County helps to eliminate some of that waste by rescuing surplus food from manufacturers, distributors, supermarkets, processors and brokers and distributing that food to those in need. Our food rescue program is an important and viable source of nutritious food for the Food Bank for Larimer County and our member agencies. Each week, our drivers visit more than 30 local retail outlets in Larimer County, including Walmart/Sam’s Club, King Soopers, Safeway, Whole Foods, Albertson’s, Entenmann’s, Target and Sprouts to pick up surplus foods such as fresh meats and produce, dairy items, baked goods and non-perishable canned goods. This food is then distributed through our fresh food pantry, Food Share, and through our 85 member agencies. In Fiscal Year 2014, our Food Rescue program collected more than Local Partner Spotlight. In addition to their traditional donations to the Food Bank, beginning this fiscal year, Noosa began donating plain yoghurt to our Kids Cafe program so that we could make ranch dressing from scratch. Kids use the ranch dressing as a dip for fresh veggies and for salads. Not only is the ranch healthier than packaged dressing, the kids LOVE it and they’re gobbling up their veggies! In FYE 2014, Noosa donated 69,108 pounds of yoghurt! 46% of all food collected and distributed was acquired from local sources Local Food Donors Big Willy’s Farm, LLC Blue Barrel Farm Brian Jex Cargill Specialty Seeds and Oil Colorado State University CSA Colorado State University ELC Doug Bartels Dr. Tom Jamart Food Finders/ The Growing Project Fossil Creek Farms Full Circle Farms Gardens on Spring Creek – Garden of Eatin’ Grant Family Farms Grow Forth! From the proceeds of lemonade stands to grants from large foundations and sponsorships from local businesses, we are grateful to partner with our donors and to be entrusted to use these gifts to provide food for all in need. Through our networks and efficiencies a dollar donated to the Food Bank stretches much further than it does at the grocery store. For every dollar we receive, we can provide enough food for four meals. For the eleventh consecutive year, the Food Bank for Larimer County has received a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. A 4-star rating indicates that the Food Bank adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities. In addition, it recognizes the Food Bank’s consistent execution of our mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only 1% of the charities evaluated have received 11 consecutive 4-star evaluations. $.96 of every $1 donated is used for hunger-relief programming Financial Donors Mission Sponsor $25,000+ 9Cares/Colorado Shares Bohemian Foundation City of Fort Collins Dohn Construction Loveland Human Services Commission University of Colorado Health United Way of Larimer County Volentine Family Foundation Woodward Helen K. & Arthur E. Partnerships Flood Recovery In September 2013, parts of Northern Colorado, including Larimer County, were devasted by floods. Immediately following the flood, the Food Bank worked with the American Red Cross and in the first two weeks provided more than 26,000 pounds of food in the form of produce, easy open items and pre-assembled food boxes. After those centers were shut down, the Food Bank began providing food to the Disaster Assistance Center in Loveland, and continued to deliver food for free to that site weekly. In Estes Park the Food Bank delivered additional food to agency partner, Crossroads Ministry, to help them fill increased needs. In mid-December, the Food Bank provided 100 emergency food boxes which were delivered by the Estes Park Police Department as they visited more rural areas impacted by the floods. After additional assessments, the Food Bank learned that many of those impacted by the flood were school aged children and their families. In response, the Food Bank started operating a pantry at the Estes Park Middle school. At the first distribution, 45 families received food. With the start of the New Year, the Food Bank moved from emergency service to sustainable solutions in partnership with the Long Term Recovery group headed by the United Way of Larimer County. Through a generous gift from 9 Cares – Colorado Shares, the Food Bank was able to purchase King Soopers gift cards for flood relief caseworkers to distribute to their clients. We are also supporting our Food Share families who have been affected as a result of the flood. In total, last fiscal year, we provided food for over 88,000 meals for individuals and families affected by the floods. Joining forces with a variety of partners, we were able to help our neighbors as they rebuilt their lives. Partnerships Board of Directors Chair Doug Dohn Dohn Construction, Inc.
