The following are the shortcuts I have personally created for various commands.
They do NOT already exist in InDesign, you will need to manually create them by
choosing edit>keyboard shortcuts. From the “product area” drop down, choose
“panel manus.” Scroll down to “Links,” find the appropriate command and enter
your desired keyboard shortcut in the “new shortcut” box.

The Non-Designer’s Design Book
by Robin Williams, available here on amazon
I love Robin and think you will too! Her easy going style makes this
book a fast read. You can start doing better work the very
next time you touch your computer!
The Non-Designer’s Type Book
by Robin Williams, available here on amazon
If you really want to geek out and take your appreciation of
typography to a whole new level, this is the book for you! :) But
don’t say I didn’t warn you—you’ll never look at text the same again!
How to Design Cool Stuff
A collection of articles from the folks at Before & After Magazine,
available here on amazon.
If you don’t subscribe to the magazine, this is a fantastic alternative.
Combined with Robin’s books (above), you can get a pretty stellar
design foundation on the cheap!

never think of fonts the same way again!
trade printers
4over.com, gotprint.com, psprint.com
Looking to print business cards, post cards, banners, booklets, etc.?
Trade printers offer professional press production at prices you
simply won’t believe.
Be sure to look around if you have specific interests like rounded
corners on business cards, or specialty effects like foil. Don’t be shy,
ask them to send you a paper/sample pack.

Flashes
In addition to my on-camera flash (Canon 580exII, obviously
available from Adorama and B&H), I like to use these cheapo
Vivitar 285HVs off-camera.
It’s rare that they get kicked over, but when they do, I don’t want
to cry about it. The friendlier price tag (compared to the 580exII)
makes it worry-free to put these lights anywhere—even the most
crowded of dance floors.
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
Battery grip
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
Yes, this makes your rig more heavy. BUT—it keeps me from
worrying about running out of power on a busy wedding day
and comes with the added bonus of preventing my camera from
tipping forward while danging from my neck when I change lenses.
Rechargeable AAs with high mAh
I’m not a battery brand expert. I’ve bought a wide collection of
brands and as long as the mAh number was high, they’ve lasted
me the whole day. Perhaps it’s a combination of shooting on
manual flash power too, but the bottom line is—they last.

Sticky Filters
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
This puppies are AWESOME. If you don’t want to spring the cash,
order some colored gels and make your own with velcro and a
pair of scissors. The difference is amazing!
Pixel Pocket Rocket
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
Kelly Moore Bag (in Classic)

They have some more masculine options too. :)
RECOMMENDED RESOURCES
Manfrotto 5001B Nano Light Stand
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
These guys fold up nice and tiny making them easy to carry
and easy to move (even in a crowded ballroom)
Westcott Optical White Satin - 43”
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
These umbrellas collapse super small making them easy to stash most
anywhere.
ThinkTank Airport International 2.0
Available here from Adorama and B&H.
I love this bag because it fits as a carry-on for most flights,
including many international segments

Book companies to check out
finao, asukabook, mpix pro, and blurb do great things.
Ultimately, what you choose will depend on your particular tastes,
interests, and the specific type of book you’re looking to make for a
given project. There are no wrong answers! :)
Tunes for slideshows, etc.
triplescoopmusic.com
Hands down the best place to license music for using in your
slideshows, etc. Some of my favorite artists they have include Daniel
Ho, Nancy Falkow, Jonny Blue, Mindy Gledhill, and Romi Mayes.
