Prayer for the Year of

O God, throughout the ages you
have called women and men to pursue
lives of perfect charity through the
evangelical counsels of poverty,
chastity, and obedience. During this

PARISH HAPPENINGS & HIGHLIGHTS
A Message to you
On September 4, I leave for a 100 kilometer
walk entitled The El Camino – the Way of St.
James. We, 5 family members, start our walk to
Santiago de Compostela enjoying the beauty of
the Spanish landscape. We are making this
pilgrimage to give thanks and praise to our God
for the many blessings we have received. In
particular, it has been on my ‘bucket list’ for
years and I’m completing my Jubilee Year by
walking to the basilica of Santiago where St.
James the Apostle is buried.
To include you on this walk, you are invited to
write your intentions in a book in the office that I
will carry with me on the journey. At each of the
churches, chapels and monasteries that we visit,
and there are many, I will light a candle for your
intention. This is my gift to you for the many
ways that you are a blessing to me.
~Peace and all good, Sr. Gael

Joseph Houses of Hospitality in Chicago.
The House for Men and House for Families at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago’s Hyde Park opened May 1, 2014.
These homes provide shelter, meals, transportation, and community support for people awaiting their immigration proceedings. Each is now home to about a dozen people either waiting for final permission to stay in the United States or who
do have permission and are learning how to live here by receiving training or going to school, finding jobs and saving money
for somewhere to live.
“Happily, some of our guests received a work permit, obtained a job, saved money and have been able to move out on their
own. However, since they have nothing for their apartment, we have given them their sheets, towels, blankets, and light
spreads to take with them. Our sincere thanks for your help.”
~ Pat M. Murphy, RSM and JoAnn Persch, RSM.
In response to Sr. JoAnn and Sr. Pat’s request, St. Julie will have a plastic bin under the bulletin board in the circle area near
the library for requested items. Thanks for your help!

Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–8
Moses introduces the commandments.
Rejoice in God’s Law
by Dianne Bergant, CSA
Many of us have a negative attitude
toward the law. We find it restrictive,
confining, a threat to our sense of
personal freedom and independence.
This attitude is far from the way ancient
Israel perceived their Law. Deuteronomy
insists that if they observe the Law, the
neighboring nations will be edified: “This
great nation is truly a wise and discerning
people” (4:6). To the Israelites, the Law
(the Torah) was a guide that showed
them how they were to live out their
covenant commitment to God in peace
and justice. Psalm 19 captures this
essence when it says, “The law of the
Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul…The
precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing
the heart” (v. 8-9). Because Jesus often
stood in opposition to the religious
leaders of his day, we might forget that
he was really an observant Jew. His
criticism was not of the Law itself but of
the ways it was sometimes interpreted
by others. Jesus makes it clear that he
did not come to abolish the Law but to
fulfill it, to show us how we are to value
it and abide by it.
Scripture underscores the importance
of teaching God’s laws to others,
presumably the next generation. During
this time of year, when children and
catechumens are beginning new
instruction in the faith, it is a good
time for each of us to reexamine our
attitude toward the laws of God and
the Church that guide our lives. †

A Word From
Pope Francis
When we speak of
the visible reality of the Church, we
shouldn’t just think of [leaders] and
the consecrated people. The visible
reality of the Church is made up of the
many baptized brothers and sisters in
the world who believe, hope, and love.
Many times we hear: “The Church
doesn’t do this, the Church does not
do something else.” ...Tell me, who is
the Church?....The Church is...us! All
baptized persons are the Church,
Jesus’ Church. Made up of: all those
who follow the Lord Jesus and who, in
his name, come close to the least and
the suffering, seeking to offer...relief,
comfort, and peace: those who do
what the Lord commanded of us are
the Church. We understand also, that
the visible reality of the Church is not
measurable...How can we know all the
good that is done? So many works of
love, so much fidelity in families, so
much effort to educate children, to
transmit the faith, so much suffering
among the sick who offer their suffering up to the Lord….This cannot be
measured and it is very great! How
can we know the marvels that,
through us, Christ work(s) in every
person? Even the visible reality of the
Church is beyond our control...It is a
mysterious reality because it comes
from God.

On September 9, the Church
celebrates the feast of Blessed
Frederic Ozanam, the founder of
the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Frederic heard the call of Jesus to
love and serve those who are
suffering. And in the poor he
found the face of Christ.
This month, through your gifts, the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able
to carry the mission of Blessed
Frederic Ozanam by assisting families.
God Bless You!

FORMATION
Catechetical Ministers Needed
We treasure the Catholic faith and
are committed to transferring the gift
of faith to our young people. As we
observe our faith community here at
St. Julie, we know that we have a huge
pool of dedicated followers of Jesus
from which we should be able to
recruit a few “faith sharers”.

Catechesis Ministers and Office
Volunteers who are in the presence
of children are required to take a onetime 3 hour session to be certified in

So please think of what grades you’re
interested in and give us a call at

A Message to you
On September 4, I leave for a 100 kilometer walk entitled The El Camino – the
Way of St. James. We, 5 family members, start our walk to Santiago de Compostela
enjoying the beauty of the Spanish landscape. We are making this pilgrimage to
give thanks and praise to our God for the many blessings we have received. In
particular, it has been on my ‘bucket list’ for years and I’m completing my Jubilee
Year by walking to the basilica of Santiago where St. James the Apostle is buried.
To include you on this walk, you are invited to write your intentions in a book in
the office that I will carry with me on the journey. At each of the churches, chapels
and monasteries that we visit, and there are many, I will light a candle for your
intention. This is my gift to you for the many ways that you are a blessing to me.

Dignity of work
Rights of workers
The economy must serve people, not
the other way around. Work is more
than a way to make a living; it is a form
of continuing participation in God’s
creation. If the dignity of work is to be
protected, then the basic rights of
workers must be respected-the right to
productive work, to decent and fair
wages, to the organization and joining
of unions, to private property, and to
economic initiative.
