One Man At A Time and the Oshawa Power want
Y’S WORDS – WINTER 2012 You Could Make the Difference... Everywhere you turn you read about New Year’s Resolutions and once again I contemplate the sheer necessity of mundane resolutions and decided on something more fundamental for 2012. So what is my New Year’s Resolution – it’s simple: to take better care of myself and those around me – friends and strangers alike. I want to put a smile on someone’s face, I want to share the gift of laughter and I want to give a woman the courage to move forward. I want to exemplify that “courage is not the absence of fear but rather understanding that something else is more important than fear”. It is not up to others to make a difference; it is up to us as individuals; if it doesn’t start with me then where does it start? In 2012, I find myself in a situation where I can affect change through the work I do every day and you can make a difference with me. The YWCA Durham supports women throughout the Region who have faced abusive situations and who have had the courage to move forward and for many, start over. The YWCA provides “ Did you know.... 51% of Canadian women have the many supports they need including shelter, counselling and resources. Something as simple as dropping off used clothing to our Adelaide’s Attic store or making a experienced at least 1 incudent of physical or sexual violence regular financial contribution to the organization, all make a difference – with huge impact: “ For instance: • $25 will feed a woman at our emergency shelter for 1 week. • $50 will allow a woman to complete a job preparation course (job exploration, resume writing and interview preparation). • $75 will provide a baby with a necessities kit including food and diapers. • $320 will support a woman through 1-term of our literacy program. • $600 will keep the women and children at Y’s WISH shelter warm for 1 month. • $25/month will allow a woman to attend a weekly women’s group. • $40/month will provide recreational activities for a child at Y’s WISH Shelter. In this issue Starry Nights 2012 The possibilities are endless. Show your support - it is one of the easiest things you can do. For more information or to speak with someone directly about making a contribution, please contact our office at 905-576-6356. I hope you will make the difference with me. In addition, we would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to thank those involved with the Durham Region Police Services Toy Drive, the donors, volunteers and officers’ for their on-going support.
