2015 Annual Report
2015 in Review Building Peace One Day, One Person at a Time Girls Unlimited reached close to 1800 girls this year! Our research, conducted by Drs. Heydenberk at Lehigh University indicates that 95% of the girls who participate in Girls Unlimited report that their friendships improve. They ALL report that bullying and cyberbullying decreases after the program. At a local Middle School, two girls who had been engaged in conflict for months asked if they could meet under the supervision of the Girls Unlimited facilitators. Within minutes, the conflict was resolved and they were once again friends. Our Mission To educate, empower and support individuals and organizations in efforts to prevent violence, promote the peaceful resolution of conflict and foster equitable and safe communities locally, nationally and globally. The Peace Center has been carrying out this mission since 1982, and we are one of only a handful of such Peace Center’s in the U. S. We have played a critical role in our region, transforming conflict and violence by teaching peace, increasing emotional/social intelligence, empathy and compassion. Each year, our programs reach more than 4,000 people as we address racism and intolerance, domestic violence, bullying & cyberbullying and all types of conflict. We accomplish this with the help of a dedicated, creative and talented team, an active Board of Directors, and our loyal members. Here are some highlights from 2015: • Completed a fourth year as the Bullying Prevention Resource Center (led by Kate Whitman) and a strong collaboration with the County Commissioners, the District Attorney and school superintendents. We held many interventions when bullying/cyberbullying traumatized young people; we offered weekly Support Circles for those needing help in Quakertown, Bristol, Langhorne and Buckingham. All police officers received a video we produced to learn how to respond with more sensitivity to reported cases of bullying & cyberbullying. We completed and distributed a Public Service Announcement for all middle and high schools throughout Bucks County so that students and parents alike would learn how to use us as a resource. • Delivered the Girls Unlimited program to more than 15 schools through the creative leadership of Karin Kasdin and a team of highly skilled peace educators. Girls Unlimited teaches middle-school girls how to reduce relational aggression through discussions and activities about oppression, power, social and emotional non-violence, and how to have respect for self and others. With funding from St. Mary Medical Center, the Arbonne Foundation, Sephora and Giving Hope Network, as well as Foundations Community Partnership, we reached more than 1,800 students – including girls in impoverished schools in Atlantic City. • Karin Kasdin created a curriculum for Girls Unlimited, now available to schools nationally, and she also authored ‘It’s Not Drama, It’s My Life’, a book for young women who are targets of cruel behavior by peers. • Delivered Respecting Me, Respecting You to more than 750 elementary school students throughout several schools thanks to a Safe Schools and LYFT of United Way grant. This program introduces skills in conflict resolution, building emotional awareness such as compassion and empathy, bullying prevention strategies all within the context of developing and demonstrating respect for self and others. • Trained peer mentors at George School, who serve with SAGE and help their fellow students through difficult times. • Held community dialogues on gun violence and vigils to honor victims of terrorism and/or gun violence. We collaborated with several organizations to continue to work on reducing intolerance, racism and Islamophobia. • S.A.F.E. Counseling, Inc. worked with more than 150 people involved in domestic abuse. • Presented Peacebuilding and Compassionate Listening workshop to residents at Pennswood Village Retirement community. • Facilitated student dialogues on racism in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. at Temple Judea with more than 200 students participating. This is an annual collaborative effort with several organizations and faith-based institutions. • Partnered with the Langhorne Council of the Arts to commemorate the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a film and discussion on race, injustice and civil rights. • Offered a weekend workshop featuring gkisedtanamoogk, who served on the first ever Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Native Americans in the state of Maine. A newly-formed Native Awareness Committee began meeting at The Peace Center. • Provided a community dialogue and workshop on Race at North and Southampton Reformed Church. • Held community forums examining the issue of Mass Incarceration through a movement called The New Jim Crow. • Provided Mediation services or coaching for those who called with a conflict situation with their neighbor, family or business. • Mentored 3 Interns, bringing the number of Paul Zimmerman Interns to over 75 who have served The Peace Center in the last 33 years! • Hosted the radio program The Green Hour, WURD 900 AM on Sundays, featuring guests who focus on peacebuilding, mass incarceration and environmental sustainability. The Peace Center has a long history of working towards building a world that thinks critically beyond war, violence and hatred...and the good news is that more than 100 universities and colleges throughout the world include courses or programs in peacebuilding. We are indebted to all of the members, donors and our grant makers including: Arbonne Foundation, Bristol Friends Meeting, Commonwealth National, Foundations Community Partnership, Giving Hope Network, LYFT of United Way, Sephora, and St. Mary Medical Center. “Those who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves.” William Hazlett Our Community Programs: • • • • • • • Bullying Prevention Resource Center S.A.F.E. Using trauma theory in our approach to our programs, we have learned that children, teens and adults need physical, emotional, social and moral safety to learn and embrace non-violence and peacebuilding in their daily lives. We worked in the following schools to implement programs such as Girls Unlimited, Respecting Me, Respecting You, Peer Mediation, Restorative JusticePeace Circle Processes, Diversity Training and Teacher Training: Girls Unlimited Log College Middle School Klinger Middle School Hillcrest Elementary School William Penn Middle School Neil Armstrong Middle School FDR Middle School Robert Shafer Middle School Cecelia Snyder Middle School Newtown Middle School Maple Point Middle School Our Lady of Grace Nativity of our Lord Sovereign Elementary School (Atlantic City) We worked with the following schools using Peace Processes: PENNSBURY - Charles Boehm Middle School CENTENNIAL - William Tennent High School - Davis Elementary School Respecting Me, Respecting You Facilitators knew that their third grade class was having a tough day from the moment they walked in the door. They had been working with this classroom for 6 weeks on identifying emotions, building coping skills, and developing empathy. On this particular day, an intense conflict had taken place on the playground; thankfully The Peace Center‘s lesson was STAR (Stop, Think, Ask, Resolve), a strategy to help kids problem-solve their conflicts. As the facilitators delivered their lesson, students began opening up about the conflict and how it made them feel. One student turned to the other and said, “We used to be such good friends in second grade; I really miss you!” The other student apologized and explained that his parents had gone through a divorce, and it was hard for him to be a good friend during that time. Other students started offering their messages of support, and the class ended with a big group hug. Thanks to Respecting Me, Respecting You, these students were able to transform their conflict into connection and unity, a lesson they will carry with them for years to come!
