While the mass culture became the official culture of the media, the tradition of elaborate culture and the vernacular culture continue to represent the field of educational and research activities inside the university. In this respect, besides the concerns of involvement in the actual society and of openness to the labor market, the crucial point of a university’s policy is to protect the landmarks of its uniqueness: reflection, study, practice, respect, dialogue. Therefore, keeping the right balance between old and new represents the constant vision of the National University of Music Bucharest, nurtured in its 150 years of history, as a result of a deep meditation regarding the social and economical changes of the present and the future challenges of the musical phenomenon. Dan Dediu Rector of the National University of Music Bucharest Faculty of Musical Performance Dean: Prof. Bianca Manoleanu, PhD Faculty of Composition, Musicology and Musical Pedagogy Dean: Prof. Smaranda Murgan, PhD Administrative General Director SENATE President Vice-President Chief Secretary NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC BUCHAREST National University of Music Bucharest is a Romanian professional institution of higher education, research and music creation, founded in 1864. Located in the Southern part of Romania, Bucharest is the country`s centre of political, economic, commercial and cultural activities. Bucharest`s diverse and contrasting features can have an inspiring effect on the visitor, stirring them to become one with the city; this is the result of the influences of the different cultures that have dominated this region. Bucharest`s long history can be seen in its architecture and ambience; the city centre is the result of last year`s changes embroided in the historical events that are still visible in some streets and buildings. Wandering through the centre, one might be interested in visiting the Old Court with its old church. Not far from there, the enormous palace, built in the late `80s shelters the main cultural institutions, artistic halls, as well as old and modern commercial buildings, spread along two of the most important boulevards, Calea Victoriei and Regina Elisabeta. Bucharest`s cultural tradition is well known abroad. Outstanding, important artists often visit Romania when they perform in the festivals organized here. One of the most famous classical music festivals is “George Enescu Festival”, where prestigious artists, conductors and orchestras from all around the world come to perform. Once every two years, in September, Bucharest becomes the city of music, and all of the concert halls, such as the Romanian Athenaeum, the Radio Hall, The Palace Hall and the Opera House are filled with audiences eager to take in the magic of music. Artistic events, concerts and festivals take place in renowned halls or in other informal places, so that anyone can find something that could interest them: there is music, from classical to jazz and rock, there are theatre and improvisation shows, avant-garde fusion, performance-art and exhibitions. Enjoy!
