Mission Statement
The Flannery O’Connor—Andalusia
Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization dedicated to the
restoration, preservation, and
appreciation of Andalusia, the final
home of Flannery O’Connor, to
perpetuate her place in the roster of
great writers of the twentieth century.
“Your beliefs will be the light
by which you see, but they
will not be what you see and
they will not be a substitute
for seeing.”
— Flannery O’Connor,
Mystery and Manners:
Occasional Prose

Letter from the Chair
Travelling South on Highway 441 just
north of Milledgeville, amongst a sea
of car dealerships, strip centers and
fast food restaurants, a sign indicates
“Andalusia, Home of Flannery
O’Connor”. Turning onto that dirt
driveway is like going back to a previous time. Anyone
familiar with Flannery’s literature and her sense of
place immediately begins to notice physical features
like the barn, water tower and main house that come
alive in Flannery’s stories. Andalusia Farm is owned by
the Flannery O’Connor- Andalusia Foundation (FOCA)
through gifts from family members. It is totally separate
from the charitable trust created under the Will of
Flannery’s mother, Regina O’Connor, which owns
the literary rights to her works and thus any monetary
reward from licensing those. The word “foundation”
in the name is a misnomer; quite the opposite of a
grant-making foundation, FOCA is constantly seeking
grants and support from other foundations and donors,
including the trust, in order to maintain the farm and
operate the organization.
The farm is important as an example of a middle
Georgia farm operation in mid-century as well as an
important house museum and the home of one of the
most important Southern authors of our time. Following
the generosity of the family, the trust, other donors and
the work of Craig Amason as the original Executive
Director, the current Board is blessed to have found
and hired the current Executive Director, Elizabeth
Wylie who brings a new level of professionalism in
historic preservation to the work of FOCA.
Having discovered Flannery’s literature as an English
major over 40 years ago at the University of Georgia,
I am now privileged and humbled to serve as
Chairman of the FOCA Board. I hope that you will
visit Andalusia and experience the magic – and then
become a donor.

Executive Director’s Report
This first annual report is part
of our maturation as a non-profit
organization. It is the right time
to thank our donors for giving
unrestricted general operating
dollars. It is a fact of life that
these funds are the most difficult to raise for every
non-profit. General operating support pays for such
things as peafowl food, grounds keeping, electric
bills, and salaries. These things make it possible for
us to be open on a regular basis to receive visitors
from down the road and around the world. Operating
support enables us to raise restricted monies to pay
for preservation work. Preservation is an ongoing
journey, not a destination. Funds are continually
needed to care for historic fabric that creates that
sense of place coursing through Flannery’s fiction
and non-fiction alike. It is the right time to thank the
funders who have helped to save the Hill House,
the Cow Barn, and the Equipment Shed in the
main farm core. It is also the right time to thank our
volunteers. Generous folks, from board members
to porch sweepers, pitch in to help keep Andalusia
going on its journey towards long-term fiscal and
environmental sustainability. Finally, it is the right
time to acknowledge Flannery’s mother, Regina Cline
O’Connor, as well as Margaret and Robert Mann
whose gifts of property enabled the establishment
of this non-profit organization and allowed this
historic site to be open to the public. Henry James
was one of Flannery’s favorite writers and he said it
so well, “The right time is any time that one is still so
lucky as to have.”
We are lucky to have Andalusia Farm still intact so
visitors can pay homage, or be introduced, to one of
the greatest writers of the 20th century. I feel lucky
to be working where you can read a short
story in the place it was written, and can
see the light, landscape, and vestiges of
the farm operation that inspired a writer of
genius and import.

441 visitor entries since April 2014
A working Royal Standard Typewriter,
similar to the one Flannery used, was
donated to Andalusia by writer and
former board member Doug Monroe.
Visitors are invited to try their hand at
typing and are given prompts related
to the exhibitions on view. We put the
best of them out on social media. This
entry, by writer Michael A. Martone,
was made during the “Flannery &
Fashion at Mid-Century” exhibition.
Visitors enjoy this interactive as it fills
the house with the sounds of typing,
much as it was during Flannery’s
habitual daily writing sessions.

Programs for People
People are at the heart of everything we do here.
Without the human element preservation is meaningless. We have regularly scheduled public programs
and the property is used for a variety of activities,
those we organize—like the blue grass festival—and
those that are happenstance, like the all-male Flannery
book group from Athens who held their meeting at the
farm, and the budding artists young and old who take
advantage of the paper and easel in the backyard.

Programs for the People
While the farm has WiFi on site, and
there are a fair number of people
taking selfies and tapping into their
smart phones, reading (in a real
book) is encouraged. It’s a wonderful
experience to read a short story in the
place it was written.

Andalusia Farm Book Group
Long time FOCA Board member Mary Barbara Tate
was in a book club with Flannery that met at the farm
(you can read more of Mary Barbara’s recollections
of Flannery and the group in “At Home with Flannery
O’Connor: An Oral History” ed. Bruce Gentry and
Craig Amason, 2012 The Flannery O’Connor-Andalusia Foundation). Mary Barbara continued the book
group through her church and for many years ardent
Flannery readers met monthly at Andalusia for a
discussion facilitated by Bruce Gentry. In spring of
2016, Andalusia assumed the role of organizing the
group as a drop-in opportunity for anyone interested
in a discussion about the short story selection of the
month. The group meets the last Thursday of every
month and Bruce Gentry continues to facilitate the
conversation. Check our website to see dates and
story selections.
Andalusia Farm Supper Club
“As Flannery O’Connor looms large in
American letters as well as popular
culture, Andalusia continues to haunt and
enchant her fans and admirers, who seek
to find the complex author and her almost
as equally complex characters in the
house, barn, and grounds of the author’s
home. In the midst of encroaching suburbanization and homogenization, it is critical that we preserve Andalusia for future
O’Connor fans and scholars to more fully
understand and appreciate the author
”
and her work.

held at the Farm. The 10th Annual Festival was the first
to be staged in the large field behind the farmhouse
with parking relegated to the front pasture to create
a car-free zone in the farm core. Food vendors on
site offer refreshments, and there is porch pickin’,
and guided trail walks. The 12th Annual Andalusia
Bluegrass Festival will be held Saturday November 5,
2016 3:00-8:00 p.m.

Flannery and Fashion at
Mid-Century
APRIL 24 – NOV. 1, 2015
The exhibition featured
Andalusia’s collection
of textiles, including
clothes made for
Flannery by her mother,
Regina, a talented
seamstress. O’Connor’s
many descriptions of
clothing in her writing,
such as the grandmother’s attire in “A
Good Man is Hard to
Find” were explored as
were changing modes
for women at mid-century (what did it mean
to wear “slacks”?). The
project featured photographs by Emily Gomez,
was guest curated by
Sarah Lenz, and was
supported in part by
The Flannery O’Connor
Review, Georgia
College. To learn more

Test Your Mettle
NOV. 1, 2014 – APRIL 1, 2015
In a collaborative effort
with area artists (Clair
Guy, Matt McGee, David
Turnbull, and Bobby
Huellemeier) a variety
of metal artifacts (tools,
machine parts, hinges,
saw blades, chains)
found at the farm were
installed in an aesthetic
fashion with an eye
towards revealing their
form. An added literary
element poked at
language and meaning.
Phrases like to ‘fly off the
handle’ and to ‘come
unhinged” have their
basis in the blacksmith
trade but connect to the
legacy of Milledgeville’s
Central State Hospital
(Lunatic and Insane
Asylum) that figured in
Flannery’s “The Partridge
Festival.”

History
In 2001, the Flannery O’Connor
– Andalusia Foundation was
established by first cousins
of Flannery O’Connor:
Margaret Florencourt
Mann and Louise
Florencourt. Tax
exempt status
was granted
that year and the
first meeting of the
Board of Directors
was convened May
28, 2002. In January 2003, the bulk of Andalusia’s
500+ acres was donated to the organization by
Regina Cline O’Connor’s estate and in October of
that year Margaret’s surviving husband, Robert Mann,
donated the main farm core property and structures.
Thank you Regina, Margaret, and Bob!
These gifts were the start of a long continuous road
for the organization; a road traveled by the Board of
Directors, staff, and volunteers as we seek to firmly
establish a sustainable organization, one here for
18
future generations. Dedicated to the restoration,
preservation and appreciation of the place where
Flannery O’Connor completed all her published works,
we are without a doubt in the preservation business.
Preservation is a journey, not a destination; it never
ends. We are always seeking ongoing support and
still have a ways to go yet are grateful to those
who, over the last 13 years, have contributed to the
following projects.

Why We Give
“There are few opportunities
for so intimate and unguarded
a glimpse into the private life
of a great American writer.”
— L AWRENCE DOWNES
“In Search of Flannery O’Connor”
The New York Times, February 4, 2007
20
21
“
I first read Flannery O’Connor
as a college senior in an honors
seminar in American fiction. For
one weekly seminar session, we
read Wise Blood, A Good Man is
Hard to Find, The Violent Bear It
Away, and Everything that Rises
Must Converge. Four days leading
up to that seminar, I read for hours
in my roommate’s wicker rocker,
transfixed by O’Connor’s tales
and her good country people,
laughing aloud at their pretentions
22
of superiority until, as her stories
are so wont to do, the judgmental
finger pointed back at me and I
saw my kinship with those flawed
characters.
Like Haze avoiding a ragged
figure in the trees, I avoided
O’Connor in graduate school,
posing dissertation topics on the
several of the American Romance
writers and even the Dixie Special
himself, William Faulkner. It took
my discovery of Mystery and
Manners and a heated argument
with a graduate professor who
saw O’Connor as a black humorist
to bring me to the inevitable: a
dissertation of O’Connor.
Subsequently, for four and a half
decades I introduced undergraduates to the fiction of Flannery
O’Connor. Now retired, I want
to see Andalusia fully restored
and regularly hosting a range of
“
cultural events that honor Flannery
O’Connor’s love of life and, in
the process, introduce scores of
visitors to her life and fiction. Join
me, fellow O’Connor scholars,
readers, and fans, in making
this hope a reality. I have made
a major gift. Won’t you also give
what you can?
”
— Virginia Wray
Batesville, Arkansas
“
I have read and reread
Flannery O’Connor since my
college days. She has had a
major influence on my life. Her
short stories, novels and letters
have become more profound as
I age and revisit them. Andalusia
Farm is a living memorial to Miss
O’Connor and her work. A great
deal has been done to preserve
the property over the past few
years, but we need to continue to
give our support to improve and
maintain this treasure. That is why
I have made a significant gift.
— Charles Kellum
Macon, Georgia
I like Andalusia a lot. I get
a thrill from thinking about the
magical deal between a mother
and daughter that made it
possible for O’Connor’s fiction to
be written using most of what’s
on that farm. I enjoy the feeling of
moving back in time as I enter the
driveway. Andalusia turns off the
static that generally fills my little
brain. I like Andalusia because it
is a showplace for innovative and
smart strategies for promoting an
author’s home museum. Andalusia
does a great job of serving its
locality and the larger world of
O’Connor fans. It is a lean little
non-profit with big ambitions.
That is why I make an annual
contribution.
”
— Bruce Gentry

Like Flannery O’Connor, I am
a Catholic and I see the world as
a Catholic. For Catholics, matter
matters, stuff matters, place
matters. Reality is first discovered
in the concrete, not the abstract,
which is why I offer my financial
support to Andalusia. It is one
thing to read about O’Connor’s
farm house, bedroom, kitchen,
front porch, her peacocks, the
long driveway, the pond, and the
barn, but it’s entirely another to
encounter these iconic places and
spaces in person. Over the past
few years I have seen my financial
support assist the restoration of
the Barn and the Hill House, literally bringing things that were dead
back to life. For me, Andalusia is
a place of mystery and a place for
pilgrimage, and I do what I can to
help it be what it is.
— Rev. Damian J. Ference
Cleveland, Ohio
“
Exiting the commercialized
Highway 441, I proceed up
Andalusia’s long driveway, feeling
each yard traveled takes me far
from strip-mall civilization and
a fully into the past. Finally the
house, where so many literary
masterpieces were written, comes
into view. I have time-traveled.
It is 1951.
Andalusia was obviously one of
the great inspirations Flannery
O’Connor used to craft her fiction.
It is an unsurpassed location
of historic importance but it
is also a place of beauty and
nature and respite. Its serenity is
immediate as one is transported
to something familiar yet otherworldly — another place, another
time, a place out of time. There is
the constant expectation of Mary
Flannery or, her mother, Regina
on the front porch, or perhaps a
character from one of her works
coming around the house — one
has entered Flannery O’Connor’s
hindered world, made small by
the symptoms of lupus, yet made
universal by her imagination.
The farm was just named one of
the top “7 Literary Destinations to
Visit in 2016” by U.S. News and
World Report. It has been recognized by the State of Georgia
as a place worthy of a historical
marker, it has been placed on
the National Register of Historic
Places, and is under consideration
by the National Park Service to be
a National Historical Landmark.
These honors do nothing however
to maintain the main house, the
other structures, and the evocative
landscape.
Instead, Andalusia depends upon
the kindness of fans and friends…
and strangers, who contribute
to the Annual Fund and provide
much needed operating dollars.
These monies pay for utilities and
staff, peafowl food and grounds
keeping, as well as the fundraising
and friend-raising necessary
to raise capital funds for
preservation.
I give what I can to the Annual
Fund and I encourage others
to so do in kind. If Andalusia
disappears, so does the physical
personification of Flannery
O’Connor’s fiction. Please give.
— Mark Cline

”
“
Andalusia—where Flannery
O’Connor spent the last thirteen
years of her short life--gives the
visitor context. One can see
the same scenery that she saw,
imagining her looking up from her
typewriter as she searched for the
perfect word to polish a sentence,
gazing out the window, perhaps
seeing a bird alight on a bending
tree branch and then returning,
refreshed, to her work. We can
pause on the porch and rest in
one of the rocking chairs, as she
surely did. We can walk through
the house, seeing how she
adapted to the increasing restrictions imposed by her illness,
using her first floor room rather
than attempting the steep stairs,
and making that room her studio
and her refuge. We can admire
the many structures that are silent
histories of the working farm that
Andalusia once was. In entering
Flannery’s physical world, we
must also remember to be
practical. Restoring, preserving
and maintaining the buildings and
the grounds that make Andalusia
so significant takes money. All of
us who regard Flannery as a truly
major American writer are encouraged to help through consistent,
generous contributions. That is
why I give what I can every year
to the Annual Fund.

“I enjoyed the pleasure of a visit to
Andalusia in April of this year… As a 27 yr.
old who lives with a chronic illness, I am
deeply encouraged by the life of this woman
who did not allow suffering to deter her from
her vocation as a writer, but kept the faith
with humor and an insatiable zest for life…
I desire to support your good work of making
Andalusia available to the public.”

FY2015 Revenue and Expenses
September 30, 2014 - October 1, 2015
Flannery O’Connor – Andalusia Foundation is a
non-profit organization reliant largely on donations
from individuals to support the annual operating
budget. Gifts and grants also enable special projects
pursuant to our mission to restore and preserve the
historic fabric of the vestigial farm where some of the
greatest literature of the 20th century was written.
The organization’s 990 forms are available for
download on our website http://andalusiafarm.org/
about-us/ and copies of our annual audited financial
statements are available upon request.
