Term 3 Week 1 16/07/2015 Dear Parents, Welcome back to Term 3! I
Term 3 Week 1 16/07/2015
Dear Parents,
Faith Life Actions from Term 2
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope everyone had a restful and happy
holiday and are ready for this new term. This term we welcome Eliza
Courts who will be replacing Catriona Murphy in the Juniors for the
rest of the year. We welcome her to the St. Margaret Mary’s Community and wish her well for the coming two terms. We would also
like to welcome back Fr. Ian Ranson from his trip. We look forward
to seeing him at the beginning of the term mass in week 2.
To finish the Term 2 Faith Life Inquiry around
‘Environment and Sustainability’, the children will
participate in a number of actions in Week 2. Two
particular actions for next week are the Plastic Free
Lunch Boxes all week and a Green Day to be
held on Tuesday 21st July. On this Tuesday, children are asked to wear green and bring an item of
clothing to donate to St. Vincent de Paul. Please
see attached for more information.
Our Sincerest Condolences
Last Saturday, Davin Chan (Husband of Jacinta and father of Emma,
Lauren and Travis) and a well-loved member of the St. Margaret
Mary’s Community, passed away. On behalf of the St. Margaret
Mary’s Community, I would like to express our sincerest condolences to Jacinta and the family. Our prayers and thoughts are with them
at
this
very
sad
time.
Davin’s funeral will be held at the St. Margaret Mary’s Church at
2.30pm on Friday 17th July. As a large crowd is expected at the funeral, we will be re-arranging the day with recess altered to 10.30am
and lunchtime being shifted to the earlier time of 1.00pm. Children
will be back in classes by 1.50pm. The schoolyard will not be
opened to accommodate car parking for the funeral. Parents need to
be aware that at the end of school day, car parking for pick up will
be limited.
2016 Prep Enrolment Interviews
This week we begin Enrolment Interviews for prospective 2016 Prep
Families. These interviews will be occurring over the first 5 weeks
of the term. If you have not enrolled your child for Prep next year,
please see the office as soon as possible.
Parent Teacher Interviews
On Tuesday 21st July (next Tuesday) school will finish at 1.00pm
so as the Parent Teacher Interviews can be conducted. At the end of
last term, your child would have brought home their school report.
Contained in the envelope were the instructions for booking an appointment for the Parent Teacher Interviews and they have also been
attached to this newsletter. I encourage all parents to avail themselves of this opportunity to speak to their child’s teacher about their
report and their progress. Eliza will also be taking part in the Parent
Teacher Interviews. Parents of children in Junior B are encouraged
to make an appointment to introduce themselves to Eliza and speak
to her about their child.
Whole school beginning of the Term Mass
Also next week on Tuesday 21st July, at 9.15am, will be our whole
school beginning of the term mass. We invite our parents and community to come along and celebrate with the children and staff the
beginning of a new term. Please note: SRC & Mini Vinnies representatives are being commissioned.

School Improvement Surveys
During this term, the various members of the St.
Margaret Mary’s Community (Staff, Students and
Parents) will be asked to complete a School Improvement Survey which is conducted each year.
These surveys are extremely important to our community as they help us to ascertain how well we
are doing in the various areas of the survey and
give us direction for the following year. In 2016,
St. Margaret Mary’s School will go into its next
review phase, where we look at what we want and
need to achieve over the next four years. This data
will support this process. Parent Surveys will be
available from next Monday 20th July. I strongly
encourage all parents to complete this survey.
Senior Camp
A reminder to all Senior Parents that the Senior
Camp is taking place in Week 3 of this term –
Monday 27th July to Wednesday 29th July. Could
all payments for the camp please be finalized by
Friday 24th July.

Footy Tipping Update Round 15
Welcome back from holidays and into the final stretch of the 2015 Football Season. We have a very open competition this year and many tipsters are still in with a chance of winner the TV/DVD Combo (kindly donated by Stan
Cash)., and the cash prize donated by Werribee & Western Automotive Group.
Just a quick recap on the rounds played during the break.
Round 13 was the last of the Bye rounds. No one pick 6 winners but no fewer than 21 tipsters scored 5. Richmond upsetting Sydney was the match that caught most people out with a couple slipping up on the last
game of the round with Carlton defeating Gold Coast.
Round 14 saw as back to the normal 9 games a round and despite being away in Malta on Holidays John Penza
(grandfather of Bethany and Hannah Prior) tipped 9 winners. He was the only tipster in the competition to
correctly tip Gold Coast to defeat Nth Melbourne. He has already asked me how he can get is free Whopper. Six tipsters scored seven.
Round 15 was one of the harder rounds to tip in recent times with quite a number of 50/50 (or close to it games)
with Port v Collingwood, Essendon v Melbourne, Bulldogs v Gold Coast, Nth Melbourne v Geelong splitting our
tipsters. No one tipped nine winners but we did have two tipsters score 8. The youngest tipster in our Comp Adelaide Prior went close only missing out on a perfect score due to Ports narrow win over Collingwood and Andy
Webster (I won’t say the oldest tipster) only missed out due to selecting Geelong over North. Seven tipsters scored
7 including Emily Roberts & Joshua Leszczynski in Junior A, Maya Wittman (Junior B), Mia Vincini (Middle A),
Simon Devlin, Kristian Leszczynski and John Penza. It wasn’t a week for not submitting your tips with the 8 that
did so only scoring 1 due to eight out of the nine home teams winning. This however, was not the lowest score of
the round. Justin Connolly (Father of Maeve in Prep) has the honour or scoring the first 0 of the season. I can only
assume that due to being a little off the pace he decided to tip all of the outsiders in an effort to catch the leaders.
Overall Jacintha Anders remains in the lead on 91 closely followed by Simon Devlin on 90. There is then a little
gap back to Emily Roberts (Junior A, Joe Vincini and Kristian Leszczynski who are tied for third place on 88.
In the Best Class Competition Junior A & B tied for the Best Class Average of the week with 6. Senior B was third
on 4.67. Overall we have seen quite a change over the holidays with students not putting in their tips significantly
affecting the standings. Junior A are now in First Place on 84.33 followed by Junior B on 82.67. Senior B (despite
Mr Devlin’s continued good form) have slipped from First to third over the break and are now sitting on 81.67.
There are still eight rounds to go so anything can happen. Even if you think you aren’t a chance of winning the
overall Competition your score still impacts your class average so don’t forget to submit your tips!
As always we thank our sponsors Stan Cash (535 Geelong Rd Brooklyn, Ph 9314 6966) and Werribee Automotive
Group and ask that you support them.
Let’s Clean Up Spotswood
On Friday the 24th of July, A Clean Up Spotswood day will be held for the
Prep - 4 students. It will work like this, the Juniors and Preps will clean inside
the school grounds picking up rubbish and sweeping the sand and tanbark.
The Middles will be going around the perimeter of the school picking up rubbish and bringing it back to school for correct disposal.
The things that will be needed are tongs, a plastic shopping bag and gloves.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi Everyone at St Margaret Mary’s
We have written this letter to Mr Abbott and we thought you’d like to have a copy to read.
Enjoy

Canberra, 2006
Dear Mr Tony Abbott,
We’ve been learning about the importance of recycling and how it helps our world in so many different ways. We
would like to know what the government is doing to help make the planet a and a healthier place to be.
We are writing to you about why we should recycle more. Most people put chemicals in their rubbish bin and it ends
up in a tip. When it rains and the chemicals mix into the water and it creates a poisonous soup called Leachate. The
smell of the Leachate will poison the air and the plastic that is trying to hold the Leachate in will break and end up in
our water system and will poison us and we can get very sick. When a tip is full people make more and more tips.
We now know that recycling is one of the most important things to do to keep the environment healthy.
There’s good news and bad news about how the environment is being saved. The good news is that tips try to help
by putting pipes in and around the rubbish so that the leachate goes through the pipes and it gets rid of the leachate.
The bad news is, it’s not enough.
Not everyone knows how to recycle and we think it would be great if this information was shared. It’s easier to upcycle than to damage the land, which is simple. People like us can very easily litter without even noticing which is
very bad, so we must start noticing more. We need a strong message to get out to the community.
There are many benefits to recycling. For instance, it takes 95% less energy to make aluminum from recycling aluminum than to make it from raw materials. Aluminum dumped into our landfill today will remain there for over 200
years.
We’d love to hear your thoughts. Please write back.
Yours Sincerely,
Chiara Webster & Katie Hogan.
