PSSA News
Last week saw the conclusion of our Winter PSSA
Competition for 2013. Once final results are known of each
competition I shall inform all students accordingly.
We shall be re-commencing our Summer PSSA in Week 9.
Next week all Summer PSSA teams will be training in
preparation for the restart of the competition.
Principal’s Message
P&C
The P & C have a very busy couple of weeks leading up to the
end of the school term. They have just finished with the
Fathers Day Stall last week and will be holding a Mufti Day
this Thursday, organising a Sausage Sizzle and market stalls
for Election Day and running an outdoor movie night to
celebrate the end of term on the last Friday night. This hard
working group of parents are wonderful supporters of your
children’s learning and do a fantastic job raising funds to
ensure our kids have the best resources available.
If you would like to know more about these events and have
a chance to hear from a Holroyd Council Parking Ranger
please attend the P & C meeting tonight at 7.30pm. All are
welcome.
School Camp
We have camps for both Stage Two students (Great Aussie
Bush Camp) and Stage Three (Narrabeen Sport & Rec) over
the next six weeks. School camp is a great experience for all
students. If you speak to a high schooler or think back on
your own time at school, camp is usually one of your
strongest memories. It is a time to build independence away
from mum and dad and spend some time with your school
friends.
We have had a couple of parents ask if students can take
phones on camp. This is not a good idea for a number of
reasons;





Both these camp organisations have asked for phones
to be left at home
The rooms won’t have adequate power outlets
Security cannot be guaranteed – electronics get lost
and broken in the dorms
Other schools will be on site
It stifles the students development of independence
The school has contact details for the venues and teachers
and the teachers on camp have your contact details in case
Tuesday 3rd September 2013
of an emergency. A few days away from the internet and
phone, playing outside with your friends, is exactly what our
modern connected kids need.
Interrelate
We are having Interrelate visit the school on the last Tuesday
night of the term. It has been a few years since their last visit
to the school but they return this year at the request of the
P & C. Interrelate are an organisation that runs workshops
on how students change as they enter puberty and what
they can expect. There is some more information about this
later on in the newsletter. The course is run for the students
and their parents, children cannot attend alone. Their
knowledge in this area, and their ability to communicate it to
children, is very good. They cover these topics more fully
than we can in the classroom. Many parents attend these
workshops to open up better communication with their
children in these areas and children often feel more
comfortable asking ‘embarrassing’ questions to an expert
rather than their parent or teacher. A note went home last
week for these workshops.
Enrolments
We already have over 60 new enrolments for kinder in 2014.
If you have a child at home, or a neighbour, who is starting
school next year please let us know as soon as possible so
we can plan to have adequate classrooms and teachers to
cater for the growth in overall school numbers at the
beginning of the year. Simply drop into the office and collect
enrolment forms.
At the same time it is very important for us to know if any
students are moving or leaving between now and the end of
the year. This lets us develop classes of the right size during
term four. Please contact the school office (phone, note or
drop in) as soon as possible.
Ask WHAT when kids act up
“Asking WHY when kids misbehave generally closes down a
conversation and puts them on the defensive. There’s a
better question to ask when kids behave poorly.
Ask a question beginning with ‘WHAT?”
‘WHY.............?’
‘Why on earth did you do that?’
Most of us have said this to our kids at some stage. They
hurt a sibling and we say, ‘Why?’ They argue and fight at the
meal table and we say, ‘Why?’
This is a natural reaction. But often kids can’t articulate why
they have done the wrong thing. Boys, in particular, will
usually reply, ‘I dunno.’ They know something isn’t right, but
articulating it is another matter.
The Buzz- Issue 10 Term 3 - Week 8
Even if they give you a reason for their poor behaviour (‘cos
she hit me first’, ‘I’m not hungry anyway’) where to from
there?
Asking WHY when kids misbehave generally closes down a
conversation and puts them on the defensive. There’s a
better question to ask when kids behave poorly. Ask a
question beginning with ‘WHAT?’
Okay, your first reaction to misbehaviour maybe ‘What
the.....’ but hold that thought in. Better to ask questions
such as:
• WHAT were you thinking when you hurt your sister?
• WHAT was happening when you argued with your friend?
• WHAT should you have done when you didn’t want to eat
and decided to annoy your sister?
• WHAT will you do next time when you feel like acting like
that?
• WHAT do you think your brother meant when he said that
you were......?

WHAT will you do now to make it up to your
brother?
These types of questions are reflective and restorative. They
require children to reflect on their thinking, their behaviour
and the situation at hand. This opens up conversations that
lead to learning.
Effective discipline helps children learn better ways of
behaving.
Some of the questions lead children to the important
aspect of repairing or restoring relationships they may have
damaged through their behaviour and so take some
responsibility for the way they acted. Taking responsibility
and making amends is another vital aspect of discipline.
Importantly, asking what? when kids’ misbehaviour impacts
on others leads them further down the road from self
interest to social interest, where they consider the
well-being of others. It’s also in line with the types of
questions teachers are asking your children when their
behaviour adversely affects others.
