Or grad weekend, or week or however long you celebrated your achievement. Either way, you think the excitement is over. But that’s not the case. It is just beginning. You think you had knots in your stomachs right before those big exams, or before heading out on stage to receive your diploma, wait until the day you move away from home; your first day of post-secondary; your first big job interview or your first day of your dream job; the day you marry your best friend; have your first child; buy your first home. You have reached a milestone, that’s for sure, but there are so many more to come. Not helping, am I? Graduation and everything that goes along with it is exciting, but there are many more exciting things waiting for each of you. During your school days, I hope you made happy memories to last a lifetime and that you look back on those cherished memories to get you through the upcoming hard times – because we all have them. Welcome to “real life.” What is that you ask? Whatever you want it to be. The last 13 years have prepared you for it, GRADS 2015 is a publication of the Northern Pen, a Transcontinental Community Newspaper, St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada. As Maya Angelou said in her commencement address in 1977, “I encourage you to live with life. Be courageous, adventurous. Give us a tomorrow, more than we deserve.” There is no one road map to follow, you follow your route, take the turns, chose which way to go. I hope each of your roads lead to satisfaction, the paths are blessed with happiness along the way and that you never forget where it all started - home. And though you have heard this for what probably feels like a million times, and you are probably hidden under mountains of advice, I would like to add one more piece outside what all the cards say (congrats grad, you did it). Not from little old me, but from Oscar and Emmy-winning writer Aaron Sorkin during a commencement speech at Syracuse University, probably about the same time you all were holding your ceremonies. “Don’t ever forget that you’re a citizen of this world, and there are things you can do to lift the human spirit, things that are easy, things that are free, things that you can do every day.
