R
anch manager Buddy Adams isn’t
the Wall-Street type.
When Adams went to work for
the Adams Ranch, founder of the
Braford breed of cattle, it just seemed to fit for
the 26-year-old hand. Even though he wasn’t
a part of the family that had run the ranch for
70 years, he is now. He and the ranch’s owner,
ironically named Bud Adams – yet no relation
– both share the same passions for cattle and
ranching. Ask anyone today of either of the
Adams men, Bud or Buddy, and you will likely
get a repeated response: “He’s a good man.”
Cowboying is all Buddy Adams has ever
known, and the 71-year-old rancher wouldn’t
have it any other way.
While Adams had prior experience cowboying before signing on with the ranch, he
said it wasn’t until after his introduction
to the Florida spread in 1964 that he
learned what a real cowboy was.

old enough to go. I used to day work

Buddy Adams’ time spent on the Adams Ranch has

when I was a kid for people in Sarasota. I rode
colts, but I didn’t even know what a broke
horse was until I got over here,” he said.
Today, the Adams Ranch runs 10,000
head of mother cows and breeds approximately 35 broodmares every year, which is
enough to keep any cowboy in the saddle for
a full day.
“You never know what’s going to happen on
a ranch,” Adams said. “You ride around and
see different things. Every day is different.
We’re always busy. If we say we’re caught up,
something’s wrong.”
While the south Florida heat, mosquito
overload and 15-hour days may seem unappealing to some, Adams said he can think of
worse things.
“I’ve never worked in an office,” he
said. “But it’s got to get boring. I think
I’d get road rage or something. I don’t
think I could stand it.” —JR

he 2009 season has been a busy one,
and in the Aug. 1 issue of Quarter
Horse News, the midyear cutting
statistics reveal the horses, riders, owners,
breeders and bloodlines that were most successful through the first half of the year.
In the Non-Pro division, Pepto Boom
(Peptoboonsmal x Stylish Play Lena x Docs
Stylish Oak) is the No. 1 horse, having
been ridden to $61,019 by Jimmy Kemp,
Eastland, Texas. Add in the horse’s open
earnings, and his lifetime total stands at
$68,654. This 4-year-old stallion was bred
by Gail Holmes’ Double Dove Ranch,
Longmont, Colo.
Over the years, Double Dove Ranch
has bred horses that have graced cutting
pens across the United States, from the big
events at Fort Worth to weekend shows
from one corner of the country to the other.
This success is the result of planning and
an outstanding group of mares. According
to Equi-Stat, 70 horses bred by Double
Dove Ranch have performed their way to
$2,370,794.
The most lucrative of those is Movin
Downtown (Movin On Hickory x Louella
Again x Dual Pep), a 2000 gelding who was
blessed with being one of the horses eligible for the MillionHeir incentive program.
Ridden by Craig Morris, Movin Downtown
won the Open at the 2004 MillionHeir
Classic, winning $300,000 for that single hit.
At the same show, Movin Downtown and
then-owner Francie Butler placed ninth in
the Non-Pro for another $22,000 in earnings. Movin Downtown has $342,605 in
total earnings and is owned by Harry Perrin,
Houston, Texas.
Second on the Double Dove Ranch list
is Twice As Reycy (Dual Rey x Rey Lena
Girl x Smart Little Lena), a 2000 mare by
the accomplished Dual Pep stallion who
was bred and is still owned by Holmes’
sister, Linda. Dual Rey has sired 417 foals
that have won $11.5 million. Ridden by

ancy Pohlman and her husband, Bill,
are new to reining. “We’ve only been
involved with horses for five years,”
Nancy said. “I researched what was the fastest growing industry in the horse business
and picked reining. I knew nothing when I
started. Quarter Horse News was the only
thing I had to go by – the Stallion Issue, the
magic crosses, the statistics. I lived in that.”
The Pohlmans own the 707 Ranch, Camp
Verde, Ariz. “We started buying some good
broodmares and breeding them,” Pohlman
said.
They also met a talented trainer or two.
Aires De mello, a native of Brazil, works at
their facility. He found Top Gun Tonite (Topgun
Whiz x Hollywood Tonight x Hollywood Dun
It), at the time, a 3-year-old colt with little
to no training but a ton of potential. For nine
months, De mello put the basics on the wellbred youngster. About a month before the
2009 NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City, Top
Gun Tonite was sent to matt mills, Scottsdale,
Ariz.
Ridden by mills, Top Gun Tonite, went from
zero to $10,208 in lifetime earnings with one
ride in the NRHA Derby finals. The 4-year-old
stallion scored a 222.5 to tie for 13th place
in the Open division and fourth place in the
Intermediate Open.
“We are pumped beyond belief,” said
Pohlman. “He’s a dream of a horse.” —PF
