RETURN TO THUNDERDOME
SIR SAINT WILL LEAD US TO VICTORY
OVER THE EVIL NFL FRONT OFFICE
OFFICIAL 2012 REGULAR SEASON NEWSLETTER #31
RETURN TO THUNDERDOME
After the loss to the New York Giants a week earlier and back-to-back road games, the SAINTS took out their
frustrations on a division rival and make them pay for that embarrassing setback that allowed the G-men to score the
most points in their teams’ history since 1985.
The Saints 41- 0 beat-down of the Bucs was the Saints team that Who-Dats everywhere thought would show up all
season long as, both, the ‘Aerial Assault’ and the new Spags Defense played their best game of the year.
The huge win kept the Saints (6-8) in the playoff picture for at least one more week going into Sunday's game with
the Dallas Cowboys (8-6) at ‘The Arlington Death Star’.
A dominating performance on both sides of the ball, a rarity for the Saints this season, was simply a matter of them
putting it all together for the first time…which would’ve happened sooner if our coach wasn’t in exile.
"That was guys just loving the game of football," said defensive end Will Smith. "Knowing that we really don't have
anything to play for as far as the playoffs are concerned, we wanted to play for each other and the fans and put on a
good show."
Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns passes, and, more important, had no interceptions after being picked
nine times in the previous three games. Meanwhile the 32nd-ranked defense did its part in forcing five turnovers -including four interceptions -- to secure the win.
"Obviously, there was a renewed focus ... maybe a new set of goals for these last three weeks the way we want to
close out the season," said Brees. "Certainly, there was a sense of urgency."
Jabari Greer made a leaping, twisting interception of Josh Freeman’s short pass to the right flat, stalling a firstquarter drive deep into New Orleans Saints territory. In the fourth quarter, Greer outran receiver Tiquan Underwood
along the sideline to pick off Freeman's deep pass to the end zone.
In between, the rest of New Orleans' defense did about everything right to secure the franchise's first shutout in 17
years, while Drew Brees & the ‘Aerial Assault’ made their share of big plays in a 41-0 rout of the Tampa Bay on
Sunday, eliminating the Buccaneers from playoff contention.
Yet, for Greer, playoff possibilities were beside the point. ''We are accountable to one another and no matter what
situation we're in, we're going to band together,'' Greer said. ''We were going to play for the men in our locker room
and the fleur-de-lis on our helmet, and that's what we did.''
New Orleans' defense produced five turnovers in all, four on interceptions of Freeman and one on defensive end
Cameron Jordan's strip and recovery on his sack of Freeman, and with that effort, DC, Spags was given the game
ball….and rightfully so.
The fans who stayed in the Superdome until the end got an additional moment to celebrate as the Saints stopped
Tampa Bay one last time at the New Orleans 10, preserving the club's first shutout since a 12-0 win in the 1995
season finale against the Jets in New York.
The shutout meant a lot to a unit that came in ranked last in the league, in large part because of high yardage totals
allowed early in the season while adjusting to the scheme of new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
“'We've come a long way. Our defense the first four or five games was on pace to be one of the worst defenses
ever,'' Saints linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. ''It's just good to finally get a game to where we can be like, 'All
right, defense. This is us. This is what we're really all about.”

The Saints must win both of their remaining games with ‘Jerry’s Kids’ and the “Kitty Cats” and hope for lots
of help to have a shot at making the Playoffs. The following scenarios need to occur next week in order for
the Saints’ to stay alive in the Playoff Hunt:
Philadelphia needs to beat Washington. Arizona needs to beat Chicago. Tampa Bay needs to beat St. Louis.
Houston needs to beat Minnesota and Baltimore needs to beat the New York Giants.
DID YOU KNOW THIS: Five was the turnover differential for the Saints, who had four interceptions and a
fumble recovery, in their 41-0 win over the Tampa Bay Bucs on Sunday. The Saints had not been plus-five in a
game in nearly a decade as they last did it on Nov. 2, 2003 against the Bucs in Tampa.
AND WHAT ABOUT THIS: By putting up 307 passing yards; Drew Brees only needs 665 more yards to
reach 5,000 with two more games left to play. By reaching the 5,000 yard mark again he’ll set an NFL record for
being the only quarterback with multiple 5,000 yard passing seasons at 3!
