T
hank you, Thank you, Thank you to the
SCCA, Northwest Region of SCCA, and
Club Rally for their support at our local
Relay for Life with the American Cancer
Society held at Tiger Stadium in Centralia,
Washington on May 17 and 18, 2002.
Our team’s theme (our team was High
Noon Sertoma from Centralia, WA) was
“RALLY 4 A CURE”. Not only did the Rally
Club contribute money donations and t-shirts
(thanks to Region Executive, John Forespring)
with the Region logo on it, we were able to raffle four of the popular DOO WOP Rally hats
donated by Ray and Janice Damitio of
Montesano, WA. Donations for our team came
from as far as Portland, OR—Oregon Region
Rally Club (Rally Director Matt Tabor, Rich
Olmstead, and a few others couldn’t resist the
challenge). John Nispel, and Frank Hamilton
of Northwest Region Rally were in attendance
walking laps and supporting our team. Kim
and Jeff Craddock, from NWR Rally donated
hats and visors with the rally slogan for the
event. National Office of SCCA was even
involved (special thanks to Julie in Club Rally)
by sending a Rally Banner, Subaru giveaways,
patches, and stickers with the SCCA logo (and
oh yes, plenty of SCCA membership applications also!).
At midnight, the ACS sponsored a beautiful
luminary to thank the survivors, remember
those we’ve lost, and pray for a future cure.
Our team raised approx. $3,000 for the
event. The ACS reported that the total money
donated from all the teams for the event was
approx. $80,000. We are so proud of our
Region, the SCCA, our wonderful members,
and all those who sponsored, shared, donated
and gave time for this event. It is this kind of
community involvement that will make the difference for our kids and families.
Next year, we challenge all the other
Region’s Members to get involved with your
local American Cancer Society, Relay For Life.
It is an experience you’ll not soon forget!!!
Thanks again to all the team’s support and
effort to make this yet another successful year
in the “Rally 4 a Cure”!!!
Jackson takes
Portland Nasport Round
by Joe L. Rhodes
P
ortland, OR (August 3, 2002) – Round Four
of the Holley Performance Brands/NASPORT event at Portland saw a familiar
Langley, British Columbia 1-2 finishing order;
Collin Jackson and teammate Dave Humphrey.
In a steady flag-to-flag drive, Jackson in his
GT3 BM&M Screen/Specialty Engineering
Nissan 240SX headed the 13 car grid to the
checker. Finishing second, albeit 5.2 seconds in
arrears was Humphrey (BM&M Screen Solutions
GT3 Nissan 240SX) and Tom Neely’s Earl’s
Store #1 GT3 Nissan 240SX.
Jeff Scoville’s GT3 Nissan 240SX came
home in fourth, followed by Gary Bockman
(Mazda RX3). Doug Barnhold’s solid drive to
sixth place led another GT3 240SX contingent to
the stripe, including Frank Honsowetz (7th) and
Larry Hansen (8th). Scott Culbertson finished
ninth and took the GT4 laurels in his Nissan
Sentra.
During Friday’s qualifying session, Jackson bettered the class track record with a superb
1:11.734 time and took the pole. Humphrey was
second fastest, followed respectively by
Bockman, Scoville and Neely. Following a draw
for positions among NASPORT’s fast-five drivers,
the revised starting order/grid now read Jackson,
Neely, Scoville, Bockman and Humphrey.
After the start, Humphrey began to move forward and after the fourth tour, he held third. Two
laps later the determined Canadian driver
passed Neely going into the first turn and began
the quest in catching his teammate.
At race mid-point after lap 12, Jackson had a
seven second cushion over Humphrey. Neely
held a lonely third, followed by Scoville and
Bockman. Honsowetz ran sixth, closely followed
by Barnhold and Hansen.
Afterwards, the second place finisher spoke
about his race. “The fast-five draw can really
have an impact upon the results,” said
Humphrey. “My Nissan was handling well, but
after the fifth lap, Collin was almost eight seconds ahead of me. I don’t like this draw situation, but that’s the way it goes.”
Despite his clear win, Jackson was concerned with a few things during the final laps.
“For unknown reasons, my differential
cooler/sensor light began to flash, then I began
to feel a slight vibration,” said the race winner.
Long after the race, Collin discovered the reason
for the vibration… His left rear tire showed signs
of delamination.
The third place finisher provided perhaps the
best race summary.
“I had nothing for the
Canadian drivers,”
replied Neely. “I
couldn’t catch them
and they were fast!”
With his fourth
place finish, Scoville
leads the series’ GT3
standings with 64
points, followed by
Neely (53),
Humphrey (49),
Jackson (48) and
Honsowetz (40). In
GT4, Culbertson now
has a commanding
63 points sum and
James Nealon is
second with 17.
The Holly Brands Performance NASPORT
finale will be held at Infineon Raceway or Sears
Point on October 6th.

Solo II National Tour Redux
Y
ou saw the event results plus a brief
summary by Sherri Sicks in the August
issue. Thanks, Sherri, for catching that
deadline only 2 days after the event! An
expanded account of our biggest event of the
2002 Solo summer follows.
229 entrants participated in the SCCA Tire
Rack Bremerton National Tour July 27-28,
2002. We had the usual strong representation
from the West coast regions (WA, OR, CA,
ID,NV), including Canada (BC, AL), and with
selected entrants from across the country
(abbreviations include AR, AZ, NC, SC, MT, UT,
NJ, NY, TX). The weather cooperated, generally, although the Friday Test & Tune session saw
drizzle and wet surfaces until late morning.
Saturday began with overcast but cleared, and
Sunday the overcast was a bit heavier with
mists but dry surfaces and overcast all day with
pleasant temperatures throughout the weekend.
The competition and the socials are always
the highlights of an event. At the Bremerton
tour the Saturday night barbeque dinner and
beverages was well received – the barbeque
was spicy but not too hot with plenty of food for
all. Master of Ceremonies Kevin Dietz gave an
enthusiastic performance in keeping the raffle
going and the audience entertained.
Course designer Joe Goeke considered the
unique site characteristics at Bremerton
Raceway Park and prepared two safe, challenging courses that demanded discipline to
achieve competitive times, but rewarded controlled aggression. On the runway the course
emphasized transient handling sections with
some high-speed fun while trying to keep the
average speed low enough for Bremerton. The
narrow taxi way was the big challenge to the
objective of a safe, fun course that kept everyone out of the weeds and ditches given the
ever-present possibility of rain. The approach
was to reduce the number of transitions on the
taxiway while keeping the speed down. A
tough problem that led to only two maneuvers
each day plus the 4-cone slalom on Sunday.
The use of two cones per location in four
lane change gates and three cones per location
in a “3” cone (9 cone?) slalom drew some negative comments. Some felt that elevated the
risk in driving those features, but the counter
arguments are improved visibility and normally
if you hit a single cone you scratch that run as a
contribution to your final time, so 2 or 3 is no
real change. The courses limited discretion in
choosing the line (although subtle alterations
improved times) but avoided the trap of an
inappropriate line choice common when the
path has little control and the driver makes the
selection. Both courses had full throttle sections with tighter sections before or after requiring a deliberate change of pace, always tough
to do. The Sunday course was more open,
slightly longer although times were very similar,
and the favorite of most drivers.

As the summer winds down it is interesting to
look back at some of the events we have conducted and to look at some items from the national scene. I will not be able to touch on all of the
great events that have been conducted in our
Regions, but I will take a look at a few that had
some characteristic that I think is worth mentioning.
I think I will start with the Double National club
race at Pacific Raceways, the former Seattle
International Raceway. How about the changes
to the facility undertaken by the new management? Pretty good start to a complete overhaul
of the facility I would say. And NHRA thought so,
too. The Pacific Northwest still has lots of race
fans as indicated by the closing of the gates to
spectators at 2 pm on the Saturday of the big
NHRA race. The racetrack was full and would
hold no more cars in the parking lots. So they
closed the gates and turned the incoming spectator’s cars away. Way more cars than either
Pacific Raceways or NHRA expected.
And the Rose Cup club races. Big fields,
good racing, good weather (mostly), and on time.
A great job by all participants, marshals, officials,
and weatherman. It seems like this event
improves every year. It was a fine opportunity to
show off this event to another member of the
SCCA Board of Directors, Bob Schader from
Boulder, Colorado, who was competing in his
Corvette. It is always nice to actually show other
BoD members some of the events that Directors

Well I’m back from my 7400-mile sojourn to
the east coast on the most fabulous touring
motorcycle Honda has yet to produce. I must
be getting old though because even in the wide
open spaces of Montana and Nevada, I didn’t
try to explore regions beyond 110 MPH
although there was plenty more available and
the bike was rock steady at that speed.
Actually, the only difference between 60 and
110 on that machine is the level of wind noise,
the fuel consumption and of course how fast
the road approaches.
I had decided to make a concerted effort to
sample the local microbrews during my
overnight stops. While all that I tried were
good beers, with interesting names, without a
and dealing with a bout of the flu.
To find out what is happening in the region see
him at the Wild West International ProRally
September 7 & 8 in the Olympia/Shelton Area
from the West Coast brag about all the time. And
Bob had some interesting stories about the tow
out to the Rose Cup. I am sure Bob will remember both the event and the tow for a long time.
The Solo II National Tour also caught my
attention. Lots of competitors, very well organized, and close competition. And it is nice to see
road racers competing in solo and solo drivers
competing in road races. The purpose-built Solo
cars are really something. They corner like they
are on rails or tracks like a modern roller coaster,
absolutely glued to the course. Competition vehicles that started as street vehicles can be pretty
interesting as well. And the trailers hauling the
machines – incredible.
Now lets discuss some items from the national scene. The SCCA at the national level is made
up of four major corporations. The one we all
belong to is SCCA, Inc. It is a not-for-profit corporation that is parent to two wholly-owned forprofit subsidiaries: SCCA Pro Racing, LTD; and
SCCA Enterprises. And the fourth corporation is
the not-for-profit SCCA Foundation. Both Pro
Racing and Enterprises are having pretty good
years. In the past both have obtained start-up or
operational loans from the parent, and both are
repaying the loans.
SCCA Enterprises builds the Spec Racer
Ford so popular in Club and Pro Racing. Over
800 of these cars are in the hands of our members. Enterprises really knows how to keep
“spec” automobiles within spec. Look for some
exciting announcements from SCCA Enterprises
about new spec competition cars. But the Spec
Racer Ford has been racing for 20 years and we
expect they will still be racing 20 years hence.
doubt the best beer name I encountered was
Wasatch Beer’s Polygamy Porter. Brewed in
Park City, Utah, the brew’s motto is “Why have
just one?” and the six-pack proclaims “Take
some home to the wives”.
Somehow, I managed to avoid severe
weather on the entire trip, occasionally by discretion- I really don’t need to make the final 50
miles into that blackness tonight- but mostly it
was the blind luck of being in the right place at
the right time.
But now I’m back in the rally saddle.
Thanks to Diane Duran, Jerry Moon and all the
other rally volunteers who made the Rally Café
another smashing success.
The ORV Rally sprint was a hoot, although
we could have done without the cloudburst on
Sunday, which turned the race into a mud bog
and a river at the start/finish. We couldn’t have

STOCK CATEGORY - Joe Goeke & Alan Dahl
Super Stock with 22 entrants was the
largest class at the event. There were folks
from Texas, New Jersey, and Canada, along
with a lot of our normal NWR members. Cone
penalties were a big deciding part of the final
line up. One of our local favorites Stacey
Molleker was one of the few drivers to have
mostly clean runs, but ended up just 0.291
back for the weekend in the second spot. It
was Evolution instructor Mike “Junior” Johnson
all the way from Rutherford, New Jersey, who
took the win in the barrowed ride from Texan
Erik Strelnieks. Erik coned 5 of his 6 attempts
at the course and still ended up 5th in a very
strong class. Erik’s only clean run was his last,
which ended up being the fastest time in class
on Sunday. Locals Tom Kotzian and Kevin
Dietz took the 3rd and 4th spots. Kevin posted
class-winning times, but alas cones penalties
took them away. A pair of local RX7 TT drivers, Max Slade and Keith Armbruster, won the
last two trophy spots. Max ended up a mere
0.394 back from multi-time national champ
Strelnicks. The competitive fun continued in
impound after the Sunday runs, as winner Mike
Johnson thought it would be fun to rib 2nd
place Stacey Molleker a bit, and almost found
out how easily Stacey could fit him into the
trunk of a Z06 corvette ;-).
SSL - Another great Z06 show down
between the same two cars in the open class.
This time local favorite Laura Molleker took an
easy win over Texan Beth McClure in
Strelnieks’ car, with Jodi Fordahl taking the
third and last trophy. Jodi also shared the fate
of only one clean run the whole weekend.
AS had only 5 entrants, all of them were in
C4 Corvettes and all from out of town except
for Ron Tate. Jason Isley must of scared the
other locals away. He stomped out a commanding 4.8-second lead to win this class. His
times would have placed him 3rd in SS. Jason
last run Sunday would have put him 1st in SS,
but he tipped a cone. Not only that, but AS ran
in the first heat on cool asphalt and SS ran in
the 4th. It would be interesting to see how well
he would have done against SS had they run in
the same group. Scott Troyer was a strong
2nd place finisher against the rest of the field
and he took the only other trophy.
ASL - Lori Robertson ran alone in ASL, but
drove very well and would have taken 2nd in
the open class! Great show!
BS - This class ended up being a good
battle between the Honda S2000 and the
Porsche Boxster with 2 of the 4 trophies going
to each. Cone and car problems plagued
some of the top drivers, prohibiting them from
doing better. Mitch Fagundes really took to the
S2000 barrowed from Joe Goeke and put down
a big lead on Saturday over a field of talented
drivers. Goeke finally entered the same second on his final Saturday run in the family
Boxster to hold 2nd place. Andy McKee and
G.H. Sharp had some quick times in Andy’s
S2000, but struggled with cones, and then
found that the front sway bar had broken.
Anna Goeke also had a good day in the same
Boxster, as she put down the third fastest run
for the class. On Sunday, Joe and Mitch went
back and forth with the lead, with Joe finally
putting down the fastest Sunday time, but came
up 0.276 short for the weekend. Andy McKee
dazzled the crowd by running very competitive
runs with an S2000 without any sway bars and
jumped up to third. Anna Goeke just edged
out Jerold Lowe in Jerry Lee’s Boxster to take

done it without the volunteers who showed up
to help with the event on both days. Thanks to
the Tabor team for the use of their EZ Up that
protected the start and finish workers during
Sunday’s monsoon, although it could do nothing about the river that began flowing through
the gates.
Planning has reached a fever pitch for the
Wild West International Rally. This year’s
event should prove to be a real challenge, with
nearly twice as many actual stage miles needing to be prepared, due to most stages only
being run once, not to mention coordinating all
the volunteers we’ll need for the event. With
all that to do, I’ve got to get cracking, so until

the final forth place trophy, one of the few
ladies to grab a trophy in any open class.
CS - Battle of the Miatas. Alan Dahl
owned this one all weekend, with some heat
coming from Mike Lillejord in Don Gill’s Miata.
Mike, not used to race tires recently, did a good
job Saturday, but cone problems on Sunday
almost lost him the second spot. Mitch Lewis
grabbed the third and last trophy, and also
struggled with cones the first day.
CSL -This one was won not by a Miata, but
the “other” CS car, the MR2 Spider. Barbara
LeRoy-Boehme really shined over her competitors taking a 4.7 second win in what looked to
be really competitive bunch of ladies.
Gretchen Everett her Miata took the second
spot as the other gals struggled with cones and
such.
In DS the Type-R was the car to have with
Acura’s taking all three trophy positions. As
expected Ron Bauer from Kirkland, WA, and
Kevin McCormick from Lincoln, CA, battled all
weekend with Kevin just squeaking out the win
by a tenth. Saturday Bauer took the lead on his
second run but Kevin topped it by 4 tenths only
to have Ron gain 5 tenths, only to loose it to a
cone. On Sunday Ron took the early lead as
Kevin had cone problems but Kevin came back
with a 50.815 on his last run to just hold on to
the lead despite Bauer’s killer 50.571. Despite
a DNF on both Saturday and Sunday Trever
McDermott from Everett, WA, grabbed the third
and final trophy position.
In DSL it was the same two cars, this time
driven by Katie Elder, Folsom, CA, and Annie
Gill from Kirkland, WA, and once again it was
Elder’s #72 car that came out on top, made
easier by Annie’s hitting a near-record 7 cones
on her second Sunday run.
In ES Mike Leuty, Federal Way, WA, was
smoking in his Porsche 924S all weekend long
and all second-place finisher Jim Daniels,
Gladstone, OR, in his MR2 could do was watch
him recede into the distance Sunday after coning his last run Saturday that would have given
him a 0.1 second lead for the day. Leuty’s twoday total of 101.135 would have trophied in CS,
BS, AS and SS! Wow! Kyle Freiheit, Kirkland,
WA, took third in his Miata a second behind
Daniels with Karl Coleman, Renton, WA, fourth
in his MR2.
ESL had the same two leading cars, but in
reverse order, with Tami Daniels in the MR2 the
winner over Carol Leuty in the Porsche 924S.
FS was the Cobra vs Camaro battle of two
Oregon families with the Chevy finishing 1st
and 3rd with the Ford taking 2nd and 4th.
Coming out on top was Ed LaPlante of Lake
Oswego, OR, taking the win over Gary
Christensen, Milwaukee, OR, by 6 tenths of
second. Gary actually had the top time on
Sunday but it wasn’t enough to overcome the
1-second lead that Ed carried over from
Saturday. The wives, Donna LaPlante and
Carol Christensen, completed the C/F/C/F
sandwich.
It was Mark vs Mark and Neon vs Cougar in
GS with each taking the top time on one day.

Race Report
by Dan Carchano
Assistant RE Race
Sept 9-10-11
Dual Sanctioned Races
at Bremerton Raceway.
(Tom Masterson (the Elder (E.T.)) has stepped in
this month to help Dan Carchano who was on a tight
schedule to wrap up the regional race and head off
to Rivers Edge Raceway in Mission BC for another
Solo 1 race on August 17-18. Thanks Tom.).
Drivers who attended Fridays Test & Tune
and the High Performance Driving School got
their moneys worth in track time. All had the
opportunity to log 2 hours before the day was
over. The 17 High Performance drivers were
enthusiastic about their instructors and he
amount of time at speed.
Assistant Race R.E. Dan Carchano was
responsible for establishment of this new program and was Chief Instructor.
Saturday the 10th was a dual event day.
SOVREN had the track for a day of practice,
qualifying and racing. Entries were again light
and Dick Buckingham, Race Director told the
drivers this would probably be the last time
SOVREN would use Bremerton Raceway for an
event.
The highlight and BIG EVENT of the day was
the marriage if Tom Masterson (the younger) and
Sherri Sicks. From the moment that Larry
Danton, the minister arrived on his motorcycle
you knew fun and merriment were the setting of
the evening. (Larry is the son of Steve Danton.)
The wedding was held in the big concession
tent courtesy of Nic Brewer of G&G catering. Jay
Bratton gave away the bride to be, Linda Miklovic
was Matron of Honor with Mike Lawler as Tom’s
Best Man. Tom’s dad Tom (E.T.) was controller of
Diego (Tom’s Guide Dog) who was the Ring
Bearer. Dan Carchano, who also has an excellent singing voice, provided music. The ceremony was short and sweet with excellent exchange
of vows between Tom and Sherri. Mr. & Mrs. Tom
Masterson exited the tent under a bow of Pink
Flamingos and bubbles.
Tom and Sherri thank everyone who helped
create (and cleanup) such a terrific evening.
The racing on Sunday again suffered a light
entry., but with strong showing of Solo 11, Vintage
and the Porsches. Some great displays of driving
was seen amongst the Porsche drivers as usual.
Also on hand were a couple of flying minis. And
then there was the exciting thump of Corvettes
thundering around the course. It is a shame that
more regional drivers haven’t taken advantage of
a fun course with lots of track time. The added
benefit is that families and crews can see the
whole race from one spot and cheer for their
favorite drivers.
Once again Peninsula Subaru of Bremerton
provided a pace car in the form of a 2002 WRX
Station Wagon. Ted Pregnall, Service Manager
of Peninsula Subaru was a guest starter for group
2 on Saturday. Both NWR SCCA and SOVREN
wish to thank Subaru for their continued Support
of Motorsports here and across the nation.
Just a reminder for those who qualify; Pacific
Coast Road Racing Championship (PCRRC) is
November 8-9-10 at Thunderhill Park. This race
is open to all regional race classes who finished
in the top 10 or top 50% of class points in your
region of record. See the AD in this newsletter for
more information.
So until next time, as Dan says, “keep the
shiny side up and rubber side down”.

hat a great National Tour! I’d like to give
a big thanks to Bud Bohrer for taking the
lead on this event. He and his group of Chiefs
have again put on an excellent showing. Even
some of the “head office” people said that this
was one of the smoothest running Tours they’d
ever been to. I would consider the event to be
a great success, and Bud’s hard work is what
made it happen.
Scott Miller has agreed to take on the Tour
Chair duties for 2003, and he was by Bud’s
side quite a bit for this year’s Tour, so I’m sure
he picked up a lot of information, and will do a
great job next year.
We have a couple of events coming up in
September, along with the National
Championships. September 1st will be our
normal Labor Day weekend event at Bremerton
Motorsports Park. For those who don’t know,
this can be a full 3 days of autocrossing at
BMP. On Saturday, August 31st, Porsche Club
of America (PCA) will be holding an event. Our
event will be on Sunday, and Bremerton Sports
Car Club (BSCC) will be conducting an event
on Monday.
Also coming up, we have an event scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd at a location

to be determined. We’re really hoping that the
site in Packwood will be available for this
event. Packwood is down towards White Pass,
and it’s an old logging mill with LOTS of open
asphalt. Please cross your fingers! We’ll
update you with more information as it’s available.
As I mentioned, the National
Championships are also coming up. This is a
one week period where competitors from all
over the country go to Topeka, Kansas to test
their capabilities. September 7th & 8th will be
the Pro Solo Finale, and then September 10th 13th will be the National Championships.
Every year, SportsCar (the national SCCA
magazine) picks who they think will be the winners in each class. Northwest Region had four
people picked this year to win their respective
classes. Joe Goeke has been picked to win
BS in his Honda S2000, Karen Babb has been
picked to win DML in her Lotus Elan, LiNay
White has been picked to win ASPL in her Z06,
and I was lucky enough to be picked to win DS
in Annie’s Type R. Wish us and the rest of our
group luck out there in Topeka.
Into October we go, and we have what will
most likely be Event #8 on Sunday, October
20th at Bremerton Motorsports Park.
It’s been a great year. Be watching here
next month for information on how everyone
did at Nationals!

ver wonder why a few people in our club
will always come forward and step up to
the plate each and every time, while others tend to sit back take the pleasures and
rewards of those who have worked hard or
they just watch? I am amazed at the majority
of members that anyone in our club can count
on and those that sit on their laurels. Oh yes
we know you. Ok Mike, Is this going to be
another speech on why I should be involved?
Heck no, John battles his brain out on that
each month. I tend to weed out the “laurels”.
For those of you that have your 50 excuses as to why you’re not involved, the following
is not for you. Please turn the page, and do
not waste OUR time. Your welcome, but
before you go on your way stop by the web
site and take a view at what your missing.
Now that the majority who DO CARE are
continuing, here’s the news. As you and I have
continued to review the convention web site
and are now ready to make our reservations,
we know the exciting things coming up with
the convention. SCCA University (say what?
oh no not school) is coming to town. Topics?
Most of us could care less about achieving
“Denverism”, or following the “yellow brick
road”. We have revised the topics of the seminar to reflect the down to earth everyday member, the member, driver, official “in the trenches”. Will you learn something for your self and
your region? ...you bet. An additional few
tricks are up the sleeves of the committee.
Remember the treasure hunt? Want to take a
verbal stab at your R.E. or the stewards? The
open forums for each venue will give you that
chance. Have a message for Steve? What
about a one on one? This could be fun...
I am pleased to announce the appointment
of Tom Masterson (the Elder) to Jay’s sponsorship committee Tom’s excellence in marketing
and down to earth door knocking will be an
additional help in the securing sponsors.
When all is said and done, it costs a lot to
attend the convention, and you are right.
Regions within the NorPac division have
agreed to subsidize a few to attend the event.
Contact your venue R.E. and just ask. You
could be in Reno on the Region. Stay tuned
more and exciting things are coming.
See you there.

Andrew Howe from Salem, OR, in a Subaru
Impreza 2.5 RS.
Gerry Wilson, Boise, ID, ran unopposed and

HS was one of the closest finishes with a
victory margin of only 0.043. John Ma, Nampa,
ID, in his Ford Escort GT looked to have things

Saturday but Stephen Halladay, Renton, WA,

the win. Cliff Rosenberg from Clemson, SC, in
his Honda Civic led through the second runs
Saturday and finished third.

ASP – This class had a definite NW flavor to it. It only had a couple interlopers. The
man with the big target on his back coming into
this event was our well-known Scotty B. White
in his Z06. He invited up Brian Robertson from
So Cal to warm his tires. Seems that the locals
have been watching and learning much as
Scotty had his hands full. Geoff Newman had
paid his dues and is moving up in the ranks
and now has stepped it up even more. Geoff
took the early lead Saturday and must have
decided that he liked it. Saturday there was 5
people in contention. Geoff Newman, Scotty
White, Val Korry, Denny LaPlante and Scott
Chytil. Sunday’s performances were interesting
as the course was loosened up some and let
the power of the ASP cars show. Scott Chytil
made an impressive run that moved him from
5th to 3rd. Denny and Val had some problems
that hurt their finish. Scotty came out hot and
pushed Geoff who had a slow start Sunday but
put down the fastest time in class on his last
run to push Scotty to put up more and Scotty
did but the time but coned away the win. I
imagine Geoff is shopping for a shirt with a target on it now.
ASPL and BSPL – While there must have
been something about running unopposed in
wide cars that made LiNay White (ASPL) and

Angela Moffet (BSPL) not afraid of the cones.
They had 32 cones between the two of them!!
Both are very fast drivers and would do well
when opposed and probably tried to keep it
cleaner. Watch for these ladies at Nationals
xwhere I expect to see them be clean and very
hotline: 206.292.0500
fast!!
BSP – While only 4 drivers the battle was
fierce between Bill Buetow and L.J. Moffet sharing the same Purple Corvette. Harold Olsen
came up from San Francisco Region and David
Annon was a local boy done good in his ZR1.
Harold had some cone issues on Sunday and
his fastest run Saturday or he would have given
September 2002
Bill and L.J. some more troubles. As it was Bill
had a small lead Saturday and L.J. came
through with a similar margin on Sunday. The
numbers get run and the winner is…. L.J. by a
huge 0.088 margin!
CSP – With 9 drivers and at least two getting one time rides you’d look for tight racing
and there was tight racing but it was for 2nd
and 3rd as Ken Motonishi borrowed Bill
Schenker’s 10AE Miata and set a pace that the
others couldn’t match. He had a 49.2 and the
next closest was a 51.1. He tested the rev limiter on all of his Sunday runs and it is working
nicely Bill. Ken won by over 2 seconds. Great
Job Ken! The real race was between Bill and
Scott West. Bill held a slight margin on
Saturday but Scott must have eaten his
Wheaties Sunday as he pulled out a run that
couldn’t answer to. Granted they both had DNF
first runs, but Bill’s cone filled run 2 would leave
him having to go fast and stay clean. He was
clean and fast but not enough for this day. His
car did take 1st and 3rd so he can go proud.
Scott enjoyed the 2nd place and a well-earned
trophy.
CSPL – This was a nail biter. Jimi
Townsend and Emalee Newby both driving first
gen RX7’s had a good battle Saturday with less
than a tenth separating them. Advantage Jimi.
Jimi must have liked the position as she came
out fast while Emalee had some struggles with
Sunday’s course and had to give the sole class
trophy to Jimi… this time. Watch for a rematch
though.
DSP – Donald Lew came from Fremont,
CA. to give DSP a run for their money in a
Toyota Supra. Donald was able to go to sleep
Saturday night with a comforting 1.0 second
lead over Brad Greco, an up an coming local
racer with a ’97 GTI. Donald and co-driver
Barry Chatin must have not shown the car the
course map as the two of them had 5 DNF’s on
Sunday. Effectively moving Barry form mid pack
to DFL. Ouch! Donald got in one clean run, his
first and that was good enough for 2nd while
Brad stepped up to the challenge and got a
clean run on his fastest run to step up to the big
1st place wall plaque. Brent Picasso was able
to pull out the fastest DSP time on Sunday but
was unable to catch Donald’s first day lead and
had to settle with 3rd. The 4th and last trophy
position was a regular DSP racer from Oregon,

Johnny Spira in his Shelby GLH-S. Johnny did
some great runs as we are used to seeing from
him.
ESP – This was my class and it was a fun
battle. ESP had 10 drivers, including Evolution
Instructor Bruce Bellom, who was in town for a
school. Bruce hopped a ride in the Jeff
Winchell’s Mustang. Steve Eguina brought his
well prepared Camaro SS-R up and let his son
Michael drive it. Michael hadn’t driven it since
his Dad had put the trick shocks on the car. He
seemed to like it and have a good time. I was in

Rick Smale’s Camaro heating the tires. We also
had Cam Rittich who hadn’t gotten the pony car
memo and brought out his quick Eagle Talon.
Saturday I held an early lead until Steve got
over his coning ways to grab a lead with a safe
yet still quick run. Cam was the hard luck winner for ESP Saturday as he coned away what
would have been a half second lead on his last
run. Rick Smale had cones on his first 2 runs.
That was one of his hardest runs as an
autocrosser, trying to stay clean so he could be
in the show. He stayed clean but his time was
not where he wanted to be, out of trophies.
Bruce was in 4th with clean runs and they were
improving a second a run as he got used to the
car. Sunday had Bruce continuing his clean
runs and a second a run improvements. Bruce
was cutting some nice times and the only person clean all weekend in ESP which was good
for 3rd. Rick was driving more like I had expected and was in the hunt for Top ESP time for
day. His performance was enough to pull him
into 4th ahead of Cam and just .097 behind
Bruce. In the end it was Steve that decided the
victory for me when he spun on his last run just
in front of the finish lights. I thought he was
going to spin and win in style but he didn’t
break the lights. Thanks to Rick’s forgiving car
and some luck, I was able to be in the right
place at the right time to bring home the big
plaque.
FSP – This was a class of surprises. Sean
and Brianne’s FSP TR6 has been dominating
the local FSP crowd and co drivers Jim
Starkovich and Mark LaCombe in a Ford Fiesta
made a last minute decision to bring out Jim’s
car and just run for fun. Sean lead the pack on
Saturday (as advertised) but some things don’t
go as scripted. Sean had 2 dirty runs followed
by a DNF for Sunday so he was moved down
to 3rd. Stepping up was “Mr. Run for Fun”, Jim
Starkovich for victory that surprised him as
much as anyone. Brianne was only running the
event as the tire warmer and hadn’t really been
pushing for a trophy but got one anyhow as she
moved to the last trophy position ahead of
Sean. Brianne is more proud of her 2nd place
trophy with “the boys” than her previous wins.
She had a big grin at the trophy presentation.
Some odds makers would have lost some
money on FSP.
PREPARED CATEGORY - Karen Babb
In CP, the six drivers present included past
National contenders Byron Sanborn and Wayne
Reuter, Camaro drivers Jason and Jerry
Braunberger, Andy Hebert in his familiar
Corvair, and Robert Jacobson back for another
go in another Camaro. Reuter and Sanborn,
co-driving the very tidy ‘85 Mustang, competed
primarily against each other with Wayne getting
the win based mostly on his Saturday best of
49.630. Jason Braunberger stayed close
enough to make it interesting, posting a good
run on Sunday. CPL saw Sharon Reuter’s
experience win out over Lindy Hebert, with
Lindy giving her best run Sunday away to a
cone.
DP was a very tough place to be if you
weren’t Chris Imbeau; he put over five seconds
on his dad Larry and a bit more on Oregon
Region’s Steve Soar in the X-1/9. Chris’s time
on Saturday, a very quick 47.0, not only was an
improvement of two seconds over his previous
best, put him in the same neighborhood as cars
with much greater power/weight ratios. Look
for him to be a serious threat in Topeka.
EP saw Quinn Campbell, making progress
in tuning his multi-colored Jetta, take the win
over Mark Sasso and two others. Campbell
put down a very quick time on Saturday only to
see his Sunday runs succumb to coneage. His
margin from the first day was more than
enough to hold up, however. Following Quinn
and Mark were George Emery in a wildly painted Fiat Spider, and George Wilder in a seldomseen Mazda Rx-3SP. EPL went to Michele
Kuntz, driving Campbell’s VW and ending up
one of many competitors who had more dirty
runs than clean ones.
FP provided one of the close battles of the
weekend, between Randy Wells in his familiar
white 911, and Greg Fordahl in the not-so-familiar silver 944. Randy’s scant margin of victory
was built primarily on his terrific runs on
Sunday; his 47.1 put over a second on Greg’s
best. David Boyd hung in there in
the Sunbeam Tiger, steadily improving but giving his best runs to cones.
MODIFIED CATEGORY
AM was an all-Canada show, with Joe
Cheng’s Phantom making its final appearance
here (it’s been sold), and John Haftner bringing
out the impressively powerful red Tui. Gary
Milligan took the win in Joe’s amazing one-of-akind car, with an untouchable 40.5 run on
Saturday and an overall margin helped by Joe’s
coning on his best run Sunday.
BM belonged to Ken Richins alone and

BML to wife Susan. Ken struggled to keep the blue and yellow Griffith cool through two reruns during
the last year on Saturday, finally cranking out a 44.8 to help him to an overall time of 90.2. Susan
posted 47’s both days for a total of 94.4.
CM saw Alex Chiu pitted against co-driver Blake Wilson and Chris White, another all-Canadian class. Alex posted a very quick 44.8 on Saturday
to establish a healthy lead. Wilson came back to very nearly match him on Sunday, but wound up a couple of seconds back overall.
Elise Leyland took CML in the silver and red FF she shares with White, posting a 97 “flat” total for the weekend.
DM featured a Lotus Elan and a Caterham Super 7, both of which caused their drivers to assume the Lotus position on Sunday. Ron Babb
stepped out to a big lead Saturday in the silver Elan, due not only to fast times but also to Alan Rae’s cone totals. Things got interesting when Ron
broke a throttle cable on his first run Sunday and quickly thrashed to repair it before his next attempt. Meanwhile Rae had developed a dead battery,
and switching to Chris White’s backup (with some
creative battery bracket work) didn’t help, as it

20 drivers in the Street Modified class with 6
trophies up for grabs represented Washington,
Oregon, California and British Columbia.
Hometown boys Tony Lemon and John Galfano
jumped out to an early 1-2 lead in their Honda
Civics on Saturday while powerhouse Corey
Smith/Audi S4/Achtuning had one cone on each
of his three runs, leaving him in fourth behind
Darren Foo in the AWD Eagle Talon. Less than
half a second separated Farzaan Kassam/Talon
and Greg Downing/Mazda 323 GTX for fifth and
sixth. On Sunday Corey took control, driving into
the top spot overall with 3 clean runs and a fast
time of 48.024. A close battle ensued for 2nd, 3rd
and 4th overall, with just two tenths separating
Tony Lemon, Farzaan Kassam and Greg
Downing on Sunday’s runs. Darren Foo and John
Galfano had their share of “coneage” but cleaned
it up to secure the 5th and 6th trophies respectively. Just out of the trophies by a mere .085 was
a ‘ 68 Plymouth Valiant, driven well by Tim
Werner of Beavercreek OR. This is not the type
of car you usually see at an autocross, so it was
great to watch Tim drive the well-prepared big car
to a very quick 50.893 on Sunday. Thanks for
bringing it out, Tim!
Terri Johnson of Port Orchard WA/ Bling-Bling
Racing (great team name!) was the lone entry in
Street Mod Ladies. She piloted the white Honda
Civic to a three second improvement each day for
a combined time of 108.189. Great job!
Street Mod 2 brought out 4 drivers competing
for 2 trophies in the misty early morning run
group. Drew Myre grabbed the early lead in his
supercharged Mustang GT by keeping his first
run clean while all his competitors had penalties.
Smooth drivin’ Chris Chu from Vancouver B.C.
with his VERY well prepared Miata turned in the
quickest time of the class for Saturday, leaving
Dieter Beldi in the abnormally aspirated Miata
0.892 behind in second and Teresa Neidel/San
Jose CA./S2000 in third. Sunday morning saw
Teresa switching to Joe Goeke’s Boxster, as the
S2000 suffered a broken front sway bar, while
camber plates in Drew’s big blue pony were separating themselves from his car! Without clean

Sheridan Peak” in the Nestucca River watershed (only a stone’s throw from Bald Mountain,
although not the namesake for the next round of
PCC).
A loop brought the rally back to previously used
roads, this time in the opposite direction, with a
different feel, and after 100-plus miles we
returned to our “Oasis” at Spirit Mountain.
Some 38 miles after lunch, after more twisty
gravel we were treated to a short stretch of highway at 48 mph on the Little Nestucca River
Road — the fasted speed so far. The Section
was named Buccaneer and had the question
“how much will you give us for this corn?” I’d
guess that would be about “a buck an ear!” The
puns were mixed in with the information and
drivers may or may not have been treated to the
twisted humor to go along with the twisted
roads.
Section 10, “32ft/sec2”, put the rally back into
the woods at 25, 26, and 27 mph hoping the
gravity of exposures wouldn’t really allow terminal velocity. Then Section 11 for the triple-caution “Tightens, and road narrows at exit, with
Page 13
hotline: 206.292.0500
inspiring exposure”, and another triple-caution
downhill “Very steep, tight corner. Road narrows
at exit, with spectacular exposures at road edge”
followed by “Grand exposure on both sides for
awhile”. Last time I ran this event in 2000 I lost
two tires on this section.
A paved section through Beaver Oregon, North
on 101, and West into the woods above
Sandlake for the spectator hairpin at a 5-way
intersection. The note said: “Real rally drivers
don’t use reverse!” Reverse is a must if there is
not enough power and no rear e-brake. We
were treated to spectacular views to the west
with the ocean fog rolling in. Another triple-caution: “Downhill, off-camber, exposure”. Then
back to 101 South to Hebo, which was well
patrolled, and East on 22 at an un-TRNT 53
mph for some 15 miles over the crest of the
Coast Range, then slowly returning to a more
welcome 26 onto the gravel for 8 miles to
Agency Creek “end of gravel for TRNT 2002”
but not the end of the checkpoints as we were
not yet “out of the woods”. The final control, on
pavement, caught some competitors off their
guard, as after nearly 11 hours, fatigue and a
lapse of concentration were unwelcome passengers.
Testament to the high level of competition,
First Overall and First SCCA Equipped
was 37 points, shared by THREE teams:
Bob Moresburg, Seattle WA / Monte
Saager, Hillsboro OR in a Subaru
Impreza; Michael Daily and Steve Pfau,
Seattle WA in a VW Jetta; and the longdistance team of Rod Johnstonbaugh,
Wadsworth OH / Jack von Kaenel,
Arlington VA in an Eclipse. Following
these three were Lee Sorenson, Fair
Oaks CA / Rod Sorenson, Elk Grove CA
in a Subaru Impreza 2.5RS with 51, then
Ryan Barker, Puyallup WA / Max
Vaysburd, Redmond WA in another 2.5RS
with 60.
Limited class was no less competitive, won by
another long-distance team of Dave Jameson,
Wilder KY / Karl Broberg, Tucson AZ in a rally
rental with 68; pressed closely by Ron Sorem,
Renton WA / Paul Westwick, Vancouver BC in
the Subaru RX with 71; and the up-and-coming
team of Dan Comden, Lake Forest Park WA /
Marvin Crippen, Seattle WA in the surprising
Chevy Tahoe with 107.
SCCA Stock or SOP was won by Rob
Marssdorf, Beaverton OR / Loren Jahraus, Lake
Oswego OR; followed by Bruce and Janice
Tabor, West Linn OR; and Vasco de Pinna,
Shoreline WA / Michael Gilmore, Lake Forest
Park WA.
Crews came from all over the country, (and in
our case one from Canada,) including Ohio,
Kentucky, Virginia, Arizona, Utah, California,
Washington and Oregon. Teams were treated to
a great event, a safe event and a well-administered event. The organizers brought together
rallyists, HAM radio clubs from McMinnville and
Salem Oregon, the US Forest Service, Spirit
Mountain Resort and local businesses to provide an event that should be on everyone’s todo list.
“Two roads diverged in a yellowed wood... I took
the one less traveled...” Robert Frost would be
pleased.

runs on Sunday, Teresa had to settle for third
overall and Drew nursed the Mustang’s ailing
suspension to fourth. Chris had cone trouble
but was sitting’ pretty on his big lead from
Saturday as Dieter got lost navigating the offsets, finally turning in the groups fastest time on
his third run. Although Dieter made up a lot of
time, it was not enough to catch Chris, who
won the two-day event by 0.005 second easily
the closest race of the event! That’s racing!

best pay attention here. These are typical

A brief return to paved roads led to the
Bible Creek Hillclimb, where our arrival dovetailed with their lunch break and after surveying
the parking lot paddock full of street cars,
autocross cars, open wheel racers and
ProRally cars, our rally cars pulled the hill at a

another double-caution for “Tight. Steep downhill approach” and a note to expect oncoming
