Woodland Middle School 7th Grade Exploratory Course Selections 2014-‐15 School Year We are pleased to share that Woodland Middle School 7th and 8th grade students and their parents will be able to select their Exploratory courses again this year. Students will be providing input into the selection of their four 9-‐week long (one quarter) classes. Students and their parents should utilize this sheet to make their selections. If time and technology permit, students will also submit their selections via computer during the school day in the coming weeks. If you have any questions regarding the exploratory selection process, or about specific exploratory classes, please feel free to contact your child’s assistant principal. Please review the exploratory course offerings listed on the back of this form, complete the selection form below and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher no later than Friday, May 2nd. Student Signature: ______________________________________________________ Date: ____________________ Parent Signature: _______________________________________________________ Date:_____________________ • Return this sheet to your homeroom teacher no later than May 2nd. • 7th Grade Exploratory Course Offerings 7th Grade Full-Year Spanish NOTE: If you’ve selected Full-Year Spanish, do not select any additional Exploratory courses on this form. This 2-year program is equivalent to the first year of high school Spanish. Students must take both years (in 7th & 8th Grade) and they will then be eligible for Spanish 2 or 2 Honors in 9th grade. This class replaces all exploratory classes and allows students to get ahead in high school. Spanish vocabulary, grammar and culture are taught in thematic units. Family & Consumer Science – Sewing NOTE: If you took Sewing in 6th Grade, do not sign up for it for 7th Grade. Learn practical sewing skills while building self-esteem, reading and math skills. Complete a fun project and learn how to hand sew and use a sewing machine. You will learn how to use a pattern, lay out the fabric and pin and cut. Master regulation seams, straight stitching, inside and outside curves and simple embroidery. 7th Grade Spanish 7th Grade General Music Learn Spanish as a second language. The vocabulary and story based curriculum allows students with no Spanish background to understand the basic foundation of the language. A country cultural project is also part of the curriculum. Nas, Kelis, Evanescence, or Juelz Santana all have something in common: they used Classical music in some of their most famous songs. Whether they borrowed from Bach or Beethoven, they understood the importance of their musical roots. Come and find out what went into creating music in Europe and see if you can’t hear the music you love in symphonies and operas of the olden days. 7th Grade Spanish for Native Speakers Prerequisite: Spanish must be the student’s native language. Native Spanish speakers will further develop their Spanish literacy skills. The course is taught entirely in Spanish. 7th Grade Applied Practical Arts Students are taught how to safely plan, measure, and build several projects, which include a lamp, key holder, and other projects of interest. Students will use a combination of hand and power tools such as belt and disc sanders, power drills to complete the projects. Computer-Aided Design The students will learn to use VectorWorks software to create 2D and 3D drawings. Students will learn 2D skills to draw geometric shapes and learn to use those shapes to create more complex surfaces through adding and clipping. Projects include 3D Modeling, Design Your Own Invention and Create a Rube Goldberg Device. 7th Grade Technology Lab **Students may not enroll in tech lab and multimedia tech lab during the same school year.** Students will work to increase their keyboarding skills. Students will also complete a Microsoft PowerPoint project. Students will then have the opportunity to choose from many stations that focus on Simulations, Multi Media, and Engineering. 7th Grade Technology Lab-Multimedia **Students may not enroll in tech lab and multimedia tech lab during the same school year.** Students will work to increase their keyboarding skills. Students will also complete a Microsoft PowerPoint project. Students will then design and create multimedia projects using digital/sound software, image composing software, and video editing software. Family & Consumer Science – Consumer Education Plus NOTE: If you took Consumer Education in 6th Grade, do not sign up for it for 7th Grade. A portion of this course focuses on the skills necessary for today’s consumer. Topics include spending and saving money, consumer habits and advertising. A second portion revolves around the importance of your family. A third section encompasses setting goals and planning for your future. In addition to group discussion, listening and speaking skills are also addressed. Family & Consumer Science – Cooking & Nutrition **WHEAT, EGG & DAIRY products are used in this class 7th Grade Music- Singing is My Thing Prerequisite: Currently in choir (6th grade), or, outside vocal experience and approval by instructor. Are you ready to take your voice to another level? This course is designed for the student who wishes to develop their vocal instrument by learning all about their mechanism, technique, diction, and various vocal styles from classical to pop. You will learn the skills necessary to perform in various events. 7th Grade Music-Rhapsody in Cartoons “Wascally Wabbit” this music is for Kids! Some of your favorite animated cartoon characters (Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, and Mickey Mouse…) will introduce you to some of the most familiar pieces of classical music (What’s Opera Doc?), Rossini (Rabbit of Seville), Strauss (Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl), Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and more. Art 1 (Introduction to Art) Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of art through graphic design (typography), 3-dimensional sculpture, one point perspective, and facial/body proportion. 7th Grade Explore Reading Prerequisite: Students must have demonstrated difficulty with his/her reading skills as evidenced by MAP scores, ISAT scores and classroom grades.) Explore Reading focuses on the improvement of vocabulary skills and building comprehension strategies. Time will be provided to read with friends, explore new genres of literature, and enjoy exciting novels. It will also give students the chance to explore new technology through the use of e-readers. 7th Grade Explore Math Prerequisite: Students must have demonstrated difficulty with his/her math skills as evidenced by MAP scores, ISAT scores and classroom grades. Explore Math is designed to give students an extra "boost" in math. Focus is placed on concepts that are used throughout middle school and high school math courses, such as: integers, fractions, equations and other basic math concepts. Daily practice and tricks are learned to help with basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. 7th Grade World Music Take a musical journey around the world. You will get the chance to learn about African drumming and songs, the classical Indian music that inspired bands like the Beatles and the drumming and opera styles found in China and Japan. Explore different types of instruments and dances and how they are used in many different countries. NOTE: If you took Cooking & Nutrition in 6th Grade, do not sign up for it for 7th Grade. You will learn the importance of healthy dietary decisions by analyzing your daily food choices and how they impact your emotions, finances and physical health. You will also perfect the cooking skills necessary to prepare the many different snack and meal items that are eaten. • Return this sheet to your homeroom teacher no later than May 2nd. •
