member of the staff excels at what they do, from the office
and administration, to the custodial staff, to the preschool,
to the children’s ministry, to the FiF youth ministry, to the
music and all other aspects of Trinity’s life. These are all
hard-working and talented people dedicated to God’s
mission at Trinity. They all truly take pride in the ministry
they do. Thank you to the staff for the welcome I have
received from you.
Pastor Matt Peterson
Thank You for Your Welcome!
Thanks be to God for bringing us together at Trinity, and
thank you for the hospitable welcome we have received
as a family in our first month of being with you. Our whole
family has been blessed by your kind words, your warm
hearts, and the meals, cookies, vegetables and other
goodies we have received from all of you in the past
month. Thank you!
I have already witnessed God working through all of
you in the various ministries here at Trinity. I have had the
chance to meet the three-year old Sunday School class
and their families at the three-year-old class welcome
night, I have met the third grade class and their families
as they received instruction on how to use their new Spark
Bibles, and I have met the wonderfully dedicated people
on the youth ministry team and the children’s ministry team,
not to mention all of the people I had the chance to meet
on Rally Sunday at worship and through the ministry fair,
and then again at Music on the Blacktop that same evening! I’ve even had the chance to meet the “fellas” at the
Men’s Bible study on Monday mornings. God is certainly
up to something here at Trinity among all of you.
You need to know that in the month that I have been here I
have noticed that every single member of the Trinity staff
is exceptional. God has called every one of these people
to this place in order to fulfill God’s mission here. Every
I have received a warm welcome from Pastor Lew, who
has shown me the ropes in worship at Trinity and given me
great guidance on how to navigate my way to and through
the hospitals in town. The jury is still out on Pastor Simon.
(I’m teasing, of course!) For those of you that aren’t aware,
Pastor Simon and I served together for 7 years in Spicer,
MN, and are not shy about ribbing each other every
once in a while. It is a wonderful blessing to be working
together again, and I know that Trinity is already blossoming through Pastor Simon’s vision and leadership. Please
take time this month to thank Pastor Lew and Pastor Simon
for their ministry this past summer—one of transition and
change at Trinity.
I am looking forward to the ways in which we will work
together in all aspects of education at Trinity. Education
happens most evidently in places like Sunday School,
confirmation and Bible studies, but truly education happens
in all aspects of Trinity’s ministry, from worship to hospital
visits to fellowship together. We are always learning, and
we are always teaching. I am excited about all of the
ways we will partner in education ministry together.
There is much fruit that grows at Trinity. I have witnessed
your gifts bearing fruit in many ways in the month that
I have served as pastor here—through youth ministry,
through Sunday School, through worship teams, through Bible study and coffee fellowship, through the leadership of
the church council, and through the Spirit-filled energy that
permeates all of the ministry at Trinity. With God’s help,
you make all of this happen. Your God-given gifts make
this ministry possible. Thank you for your commitment to
God’s work through Trinity—the work of welcoming the
community to worship and grow in serving God.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Matt

Trinity Foundation
Trinity Ensures Well-being for Caregivers
“God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.”
– William Cowper
Caretaking can be full of joy and also full of great challenges. One church is taking a bold step to improve the
lives of those caring for a loved one with a chronic illness
by providing foundational support for an innovative new
project. God moves in mysterious ways and, this time, it’s
through iPads!
Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead used foundation grant funds to
help Lutheran Social Services purchase Apple iPads to loan
to area caregivers. By using Skype video calls, caregivers
can access counseling, consulting/coaching, support groups
with other caregivers, chronic care management tools, and
educational opportunities. Winter and distance often isolate
caregivers and these supports were not easily accessible
previously.
One result of the new iPad program is a series of beautiful
stories. “We have two ladies who are in their 80s and are
currently using the iPads to attend support groups, counsel-
ing sessions etc. They have become fast friends and call
each other all the time now and email each other using their
iPads,” said Tara Geise, LSS Program Manager for Caregiver Support and Respite. “I was really worried about one
lady’s depression and she is like a kid with a new toy and
excited about life again. It really opens up a whole new
world!”
The program’s main goals are to increase caregivers’ health
and well-being and provide chronic care management that
keeps older adults in their homes longer. Trinity’s Pastor
Simon Fensom remarked, “Lutheran Social Services is one
of our ministry partners because they proclaim the gospel
through acts of service that inspire hope, change lives, and
build community.”
Thanks to the strong support of Trinity Lutheran Church of
Moorhead, Tara is seeing positive changes in many caregivers’ self-esteem, decreases in signs of depression and isolation, building of supportive friendships, and access to new
education opportunities as they use their new iPads.
Tara and her team have seen this grant-funded, innovative
program result in a delightful success. “I never dreamed all
this would happen.”

Trinity Focus
Trinity helping neighbors in need
by Kristin Johnson
A small group from Trinity is helping neighbors in need
in a big way, and enjoying every minute of it. This group
gets together the third Tuesday of every-other month to
provide evening meals at Churches United for the Homeless in Moorhead, working from 2:30-7 p.m. They cook,
prepare and serve the meal to the residents who are
staying at Churches United. It may seem like a small task,
but the rewards are immeasurable.
Gloria Hanson, who leads the group, felt called to this
ministry eight years ago. “I think the Good Lord sent me
there,” she said. “Somebody brought up that they needed
more help, and I thought it was something I should do.” Ardis Sandvig, Vi Lien, Lin Svobodny, Gloria Brown, Yvonne
Baker and Chad Hanson also volunteer their time.
Churches United for the Homeless is the largest shelter
in northwestern Minnesota and is the only shelter within
250 miles that is able to accommodate single men, single
women, and both one and two parent families. They offer
spiritual ministry and emotional affirmation to people who
are homeless, furnishing a temporary shelter, and referring residents to appropriate services such as job service,
social services, mental health services, and programs such
as Alcoholics Anonymous. They are supported by a core
group of churches who provide volunteers, in-kind donations, financial contributions, as well as most of the preparation and serving of food for our evening and weekend
meals. (www.churches-united.org).
It’s a rewarding experience for those who serve at
Churches United. The Trinity group gets close to people
and families, especially those who have been at the shelter a longer period of time. “They get to be like friends,”
Gloria Hanson said. It makes her feel good knowing her
work is appreciated. “I really care for those people,” she
added. “They need help, and I feel like I’m wanted there.
I really enjoy doing it.”
Churches United provides shelter for single men, single women,
and both one and two parent families.
In addition to providing meals, Churches United People
Services (CUPS) is a group that helps the shelter in other
ways. They meet every-other 3rd Thursday of the month
and work on projects like quilting, sewing curtains, and
whatever else is needed. Ardis Sandvig is also a member
of this group. She enjoys the fellowship with other Trinity
members, but the feeling she gets from helping others is
why she keeps coming back. She is joined in volunteering by Gloria Hanson, Vi Lien, Jim and Lin Svobodny and
Darlene Radi.
Other volunteer opportunities include working at the free
thrift shop, food pantry, sorting items, and much more.
“There are so many things for volunteers to do there,”
Sandvig said. “I’m sure there are lots of things I haven’t
even done yet. When you see the good that comes out of
it, you can’t help but give.”
Churches United depends on over 3,000 volunteers from
the community working over 10,000 hours throughout the
year. If you would like to volunteer your time, please visit
www.churches-united.org/volunteer or call (218) 2360372. They ask volunteers to attend an orientation, make
a commitment of 4 hours per month, and to successfully
complete a background check. Volunteers under 16 must
be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Faith Tiles – October 5
The Second Grade Faith Milestone Begins
All second grade kids with their parents will begin the
process of making faith tiles on Sunday, Oct. 5. We will
meet in Fellowship Hall from 9:35-10:25 a.m. (the Sunday school hour). We’ll use red clay, which will be kiln
fired, painted with acrylics, and sealed. All second grade
kids with a parent should be present on October 5th to
complete the first step of making their tiles; we won’t be
able to hold make-up sessions for those who are not able
to attend. After the tiles are fired, the kids will paint them
in their Sunday school classes. Then the tiles will be sealed
and sent home for families to enjoy.
Hayride for 4-5-6th Graders
October 5th
All 4-5-6th graders are invited on a hayride on Sunday,
Oct. 5. Meet at the east parking lot at 5:55 p.m. The bus
will leave at 6:00. We plan to return by 8:20 p.m. Call
the info desk at 236-1333 to sign up. The cost is $5. We
have a limit of 40 kids so sign up early. You may bring
one friend. Your payment will reserve your spot. Parents,
we need a few of you to join in the fun! Parent volunteers
are free!
Guardian Angels
Fourth Grade Faith Milestone
In their fourth grade year, each Sunday school student
is invited to serve in Trinity’s Guardian Angel program.
Fourth graders are matched with children who will be
baptized. Guardian Angels attend the baptism and present the parents with a baptismal candle. They also promise to pray for the child and to remember the child’s first
baptismal birthday. Sandra will be calling fourth graders
throughout the year to be Guardian Angels. For more
information, please call Sandra.

2015 Detroit Youth Gathering
Trip - Worshipping with 36,000
youth, traveling through many states
and cities, growing in relationship
and faith, engaging in service to
others are just a few things you’ll
experience on this wonderful trip.
Talk to any youth or adult who have
gone on this once-in-a-lifetime trip and they’ll tell you
how meaningful it was. Fill out the registration form and
register today or by October 10th. Questions? Call Kathy
or Ashley at 236-1333.
Trinity Friends in Faith invites youth in grades 9-12 to
be a part of our Senior High Small Groups. Friends are
such an important part of life. Being part of a supportive
network of people is essential to dealing with all the
situations we face in life.
These groups meet two Wednesdays a month from
October through April and the other Wednesday nights
are malt nights or large group activities. The groups
discuss relevant topics, study scripture, have fun together,
eat great food, do service projects and more. They
become another supportive group in your network of
relationships. If you are interested in being a part of
small groups contact Ashley or Kathy so we can get you
connected with a group.
The Jr. High Synod Gathering will be held at Arrowwood
in Alexandria, MN on Nov. 21-22. This is a great
opportunity to worship with other youth from Minnesota
and North Dakota. There will be guest speakers, live
music, dances, a waterpark, and more! Plus, this year’s
theme is Mission Possible so there are surprises in store!
Registration is now open - you can find registration forms
in the youth room. Trinity will pay $70, so your cost is only
$70. Register by November 1.
78th on FiF Street - Wednesdays begin with pizza at
5:15 p.m. in the youth room. Pizza is sold for $1.50
a slice. Logan Block and Delany McKay will serve as
the coordinators along with many college/camp staff
volunteers. From 6-8 p.m., youth and leaders engage in
active experiences that support faith development and
relationship building through large group, mentor groups
and special activities.
Friends in Faith
held their annual
Stockholders
Banquet in September. The youth
provided a good
meal and shared
what they have
been doing this
summer.
Thank you for
supporting your
Trinity youth!

Building for Mission - Through your support of Building
for Mission, the restoration and rehabilitation of the
stained glass windows in the south overflow area has
been completed. The project included the removal and releading of the windows as well as the repair of damaged
pieces. Protective exterior windows were also replaced as
part of the project.
The windows were originally designed and crafted in
1957 by Peter Dhoman, a well-known German artist from
St. Paul. Each of the seven windows interprets a phrase
from the Lord’s Prayer. Please take a moment to study
and enjoy the beauty of the windows.

Lost and Found Ministry
Trinity received the following letter:
Dear Trinity Lutheran Church,
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the
gracious monthly gifts to Lost and Found Ministry. It directly
translates into care for the people who walk through these
doors every day.
Today is a beautiful day. There is hope in the air! The new

newly remodeled space next door (107 7th St. S). Its purpose is to strengthen the recovery community through peerto-peer support, public education, and advocacy. reGROUP
is funded through a grant from the Minnesota Department of
Human Services Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division. Your direct
kindness and generosity continue to help Lost and found give
a hand up to those who struggle with addictions.
We’ve had some changes at Lost and Found, but the board,
Trinity Lutheran, and staff are still moving ahead with faith
as we reorganize a bit and strengthen our service through
the library and counseling/interventions. Of one thing we
are certain, that God will see us through even the hard
times of changes to a brighter future. We are grateful that
with your investment in this ministry, we can be here to help
those lost in another’s addiction. Thank you again!

Your gift and partnership mean we can serve the people
who walk through our doors or call us for help. Thank you.
20/30 Somethings
The Project F-M is excited to announce that it has hired a
new director and mission developer! Please join us in
welcoming the Rev. Kristina Waters. She will begin Oct. 15.
The Project F-M is making space for people in their
20s/30’s to love God and love neighbor by cultivating
an open-minded, curious faith.
Our leadership is always in the process of listening and
imagining what gatherings fit our community best. So far,
we’ve discerned the importance of hosting Theology Pub on
most first and third Mondays of every month, and a book
club on most second and fourth Mondays. Sounds Sacred
ReGROUP recently held its grand opening, open house and
ribbon cutting ceremony.

(to me) happens the second Sunday of the month. This is
a service of reflection using poetry and music centered
around a sacred theme. Communion is served, and everyone
is welcome to participate in whatever way makes sense to
them. Cracked Word Writing Group is the 4th Sunday of
the Month. We also co-sponsor, support or go to other community events in F-M.
If you have other ideas, send us a message. Check our
Facebook page for updates, connections and current FargoMoorhead community events.
