“Going forward,

Throughout 2013 we celebrated the
100th anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Canada, something I am very proud to say I
was a part of. Throughout the year we participated in many activities on a National level
that helped to promote BBBS and mentoring
in general. Four of our Mentoring Coordinators had the wonderful opportunity to attend
the National Convention and 100th Anniversary
Gala, something they appreciated very much.
Along with the 100th-year theme, our Bowl for
Kids Sake event surpassed our goal of having
100 teams participate. We are so thankful for
the community support of this agency and the
work that we do!
2013 was also a year of introspection as
we spent many months preparing for an
agency accreditation process (every five years).
This process involved the review of all policies,
analysis of our casework practices and organization of our paperwork. We were very
pleased with the outcome of a 75% score in
agency management and a 97% score in
program delivery. Thank you to the staff for
their on-going diligence with their casework,
their dedication to the children and youth we
serve and to their commitment to making a
difference in their communities. It is a
pleasure to have the opportunity to work with
such a fine group of people!
Thank you to the Board of Directors for
your leadership and vision in guiding the
agency through 2013 and to Deborah Fisher
for her intense passion, leadership and commitment as Board President for most of 2013.
I am looking forward to continuing to work
with Brian Murray who stepped into the
President’s role in late 2013. Special thanks to:
- Robert Vincent for 4 years of service as a
Board member and continued commitment as
an Honorary Life Member.
- Rob MacPherson for 2 years of service as
a member of the Board of Directors
- Bruce Connell for 2 years of service as a
member of the Board of Directors
My heartfelt thanks go out to the many
volunteer Mentors, Bigs, Go Girls Mentors and
special event volunteers. Your commitment to
making a difference in the lives of children and
youth is appreciated greatly . I firmly believe
that our investment of time and energy is so
simple, yet so powerful!
As I celebrate almost five years in my
position as Executive Director of Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Saint John, I can truly say that we
are making a positive difference in the communities we serve between Sussex and Charlotte
County. Not only are we impacting the lives of
the nearly 400 children we serve, we are also
making a difference for other children and
families who will ultimately benefit from the
work we do through community partnerships.
I am looking forward to the rest of 2014 and
many more years to come.
Respectfully Submitted,
Laurie Collins, Executive Director

The largest components of this decrease
were salaries, programs and other, fundraising,
contracted services and advertising and
promotion. There was an increase in the
‘Go Girls!’ expenses due to 2012 being a partial
year for that program. The decrease in salaries
was due to a maternity leave. The decrease in
programs and other, fundraising and
advertising and promotion was due to no ‘Big
Night Out’ in 2013 and the ‘One Year - 100
Men’ campaign ended in 2012.
Going forward, the agency will continue
to keep expenses that do not directly affect
mentoring programs low, remaining
committed to our goal of ensuring that every
child who needs a mentor, has a mentor.
We will also be looking to maintain our
relationship with the United Way under its
new funding model in 2015.
A dedicated Board and staff will continue
to provide relevant volunteer based mentoring
programs for youth in our communities.

I am pleased to present the 2013 financial
statements for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint
John Inc., as prepared under a ‘Review
Engagement’, by Deloitte & Touche LLP for the
year ended December 31, 2013. Our finances
improved in 2013 due to an increase in some
of our fundraisers and a focus of keeping our
expenses low.
The agency had a surplus of $37,020 this
year; compared to a loss of $74,501 for 2012.
The agency once again had the support of the
Provincial Government, the United Way of
Greater Saint John and our community and
corporate sponsors, both in Saint John and
Charlotte counties. Our annual Bowl for Kids
Sake and Big Book Sale fundraisers accounted
for 41% of our annual revenues and we are
thankful for our many supporters. 2013 total
revenue increased by $46,552 over 2012, for
an annual total of $347,361. The increase was
due to a full year of the ‘Go Girls!’ program
and Bowl for Kids Sake raised more money.
On the expense side, total expenditures
decreased $64,969 to a total of $310,341
for 2013.

President’s
Report
Brian Murray,
President of
Board of
Directors
“Start
something . . .
I am proud to
say that we
have started
something and
that we will
continue to do
so. Helping
kids is what
motivates our
agency and
its people.”
Serving as President of the Board of
Directors has only reaffirmed my notion that
our agency is doing great things for kids and
we have an organization to be proud of.
We are a leader in providing children
services to the greater Saint John area and at
every turn, we are finding success. This success
is not inherent though, as it does not come
without the sincere dedication and hard work
of many people. The Board would like to
publically thank each and every member of the
staff. Your tireless efforts to ensure that every
child that needs a mentor, has a mentor has
not gone unnoticed. Our agency has been
serving more children than it has before and
this incredible statistic speaks volumes about
the work you are doing. The board also could
not be more proud to align themselves with
our Executive Director, Laurie Collins. Her
vision, work ethic and leadership have driven
our agency both fiscally and strategically to
new heights over the past year. Her passion for
kids is what pulled me into the agency and
keeps me here. Well done team!
We have seen tremendous accomplishments from the agency throughout 2013.
From high numbers of matches, to a successful
‘Go Girls!’ program to a few bowlers raising
over $130,000 in Bowl for Kids Sake. Our
agency is healthy and this was duly noted in
our Accreditation Report from the National
Office. This process delved into every aspect of
the agency and we are happy to report that we
were commended in many, many areas of
agency operations.
To the Board of Directors, I say thank you.
Your commitment and time to the board has
allowed for the agency to become better. As
we continue to develop board policies and
embark on developing a new strategic plan to
secure the future of the agency, your duty will
continue. The board would like to officially
welcome two new members into the fold,
Jessica Parsons and Leah Straight. Their
contributions in the upcoming months will be
invaluable. The board would also like to thank
Robert Vincent, Bruce Connell and Rob
MacPherson for their years of committed
service and sage advice.
‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is an
old proverb that is paralleled within our
agency. We thrive and function on the grace of
our volunteers, and the Staff and the Board of
Directors would like to thank publically all
Volunteers for their time, their talent and their
treasure. The ‘Big/Little’ relationship is the
backbone of what we do and from all
accounts, ‘Bigs’ are making a difference in the
lives of their ‘Littles’. To our sponsors, both
corporate and individual, your generosity has
been translated into action in many ways. We
thank you.
In closing, our mantra from the past year
has been, ‘start something…’ I am proud to
say that we have started something and that
we will continue to do so. Helping kids is what
motivates our agency and its people. Everything we do from Sussex to St. Stephen is
driven by this simple, yet complex concept.
As we continue to push forward as an organization, let our decisions and actions be guided
by what’s best for kids.
Respectively submitted, Brian Murray

January/February
Youth SJ formed late in 2011 by four highly
respected, youth-serving Saint John agencies:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John
Saint John Boys and Girls Club
Saint John YM-YWCA
Teen Resource Centre
All four of the founding agencies have been
accredited and meet the standards of care.
Youth SJ continues to make an impact in the
community by:
 Holding regular meetings to coordinate
community and school programs
 Working with other community groups to
educate the public about standards of
care i.e. Crescent Valley, One Change,
Vibrant Communities, BCAPI, Saint John
Police, Social Development, City of Saint
John, etc.
 Working with funders to incorporate the
Standards of Care and Youth SJ
membership into funding requirements
 Continuing the assessment of other
youth-serving agencies for membership
 Setting up a shared ‘Drop Box’ for
resource sharing among agencies
 Submitting ‘Letters to the Editor’
 Participating in forums, committees and
meetings hosted by the NB Child and
Youth Advocate in attempts to develop a
collaborative network of ‘Children’s
rights champions’.
Youth SJ is committed to making a difference
in the lives of youth in our community!

Go Girls!
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds
Thanks to multi-year funding from The
Canadian Women’s Foundation, Girls’ Fund
Grant, BBBS of Saint John has had significant
growth of this group mentoring program.
This support has enabled the Saint John
agency to dramatically expand the ‘Go Girls!’
Program, lengthening the core program and
adding an ‘enhanced mentoring component’.
With this funding, we were able to match
70 young girls in the program last year with
14 female mentors (in small groups). About
35 girls are continuing on to the enhanced
mentoring component of the program this
coming year. The extension of the program
is another first for the Saint John agency!
BBBS Saint John Program Trends
Group Programs
Traditional and Group matches are strong as a result of the
One Year 100 Men campaign in 2012, and the success of ‘Go Girls!’ in 2013.
As shown in the third graph in the series to
the right, there are several group programs
offered by the agency, primarily to engage the
children on the waiting list, who are waiting to
be matched with a caring adult volunteer.
One of the more well-known is the Kids
‘N’ Kops summer camp offered in conjunction
with the Saint John Police Force. The Saint
John agency created the program about 16
years ago and it has been replicated in other
cities across Canada! Another Saint John first!
Betty Hitchcock and Cindy Millett each received
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in
2013, nominated by Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The three graphs
