DROIDMAKER
Friday, January 13
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Wednesday, January 11
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Back by popular demand! Yes, Russell returns to
Macworld! Mr. Brown will kick off the hour with
virtuoso style and classic theatre. Prepare for an
“altered” view of Photoshop, guaranteed to make
you smile. Russell will take you on a wild and wacky ride through
some of the key new features found in Photoshop CS. In his own
unique (ahem!) style, he will cover some of his favorite new features
and reveal amazing ways to use them. Make sure this event is on
your schedule.
Michael Rubin,
Author, DROIDMAKER: George Lucas and the Digital Revolution
Many have a sense that Lucas was a technology
pioneer, but exactly what did he do and why did he
do it? The remarkable tools we have on every Mac
began as revolutionary notions in the late ’60s,
from radicals like Lucas and his friend Francis Coppola. Concurrent
with the making of Empire Strikes Back, Lucas launched research
so prolific, and yet so private, that few realize its impact on editing,
audio, videogames and computer graphics. Steve Jobs’ vision brought
these tools to the masses, but it was Star Wars that catalysed a
generation. Author Michael Rubin returns to Macworld to spin a tale
of movies, technology and friendships.
The Podcast Economy
Chris Pirillo,
President, Lockergnome.com
Friday, January 13
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Internet Radio? Citizen-based Audio Journalism?
The “new” Spam? Industry visionary Chris Pirillo
presents his insights on the rise of the Podcasting
phenomenon: the societal impact and the economic
opportunities that have arisen in its wake. From his unique vantage
point as one of the pioneers of RSS-based business models, Chris
brings a wealth of insight and practical advice with him that will
inspire you, challenge your perceptions and shed reality on where
Podcasting is today and where it can go tomorrow. Look beyond the
iPod/iTunes implications, and gain a unique perspective on “the big
picture” that Podcasting represents.

AppleScript is an English-like language used to write scripts that automate
the actions of Mac OS X and its hosted applications. Much more than a
macro-language that simply repeats your recorded actions, AppleScript
scripts can “think,” making decisions based on user-interaction or by parsing
and analyzing data, documents or situations. And Apple’s new release of
Mac OS X Tiger includes many new powerful scripting features while making
it easier to access AppleScript tools and abilities.

Mac OS X is being deployed more and more in enterprise environments. Along the way,
integration with Active Directory is a must. This session focuses on the various methods to permit
Mac OS X to bind to Active Directory, including the Active Directory plug-in, using static values,
repurposing attributes and modification of the AD schema. A section on using the command line
tool for binding will be discussed as scripting can help automate binds.
In this session, we will examine the Apple Xserve and the Mac OS X Server as a Webserver
platform. We will examine the advantages and disadvantages of the platform and how to
tweak the platform for the best performance. As a reference, we will examine the real-world
implementation of the DailyINK.com Web site. We will also provide information on lessons
learned and guidelines for creating a new Web site implementation.
As TCP/IP utilization approaches the network capacity available, performance may suffer dramatically due to TCP/IPs per connection congestion avoidance mechanisms. This session will give
practical examples of how network performance can be improved by considering network traffic as
a whole and allocating network bandwidth to match business priorities using packet shaping and
other techniques. The speaker will draw on his own experience developing software tools
to demonstrate the concepts and actual results.
As computational requirements of scientists and creative users exceed the performance growth of
individual processors, IT professionals have turned to relatively inexpensive clusters of standard
systems to accelerate their applications. The Apple Workgroup Cluster, designed for creative and
scientific uses, simplifies the process of purchasing, assembling and configuring computational
clusters.
In this session, attendees will learn about the various technologies that make up a cluster system,
which ones are recommended by Apple for Xserve G5 and Mac OS X Server, and how users can
go about integrating cluster technology into their existing workflows. Rather than focusing on
specific products or implementations, this session will cover the concepts of cluster computing, as
well as how to avoid common pitfalls that encumber IT professionals new to the world of cluster
computing. The session will conclude with a brief overview of the Apple Workgroup Cluster itself.
There’s plenty that’s new in Apple’s Directory Services and this session will highlight those
topics. From Access Control Lists to Windows NT Migration, Open Directory is waiting to be put
to use by you. Make no mistake, Open Directory is at the heart of both Mac OS X and Mac OS
X Server. Learn how to harness this power and then utilize various tools to increase security,
enable various permission levels, distribute information and increase redundancy with your
systems. Whether you’re in a pure Mac OS X environment or using the Active Directory plug-in,
attendance in this session is a must for system administrators.
When things go bump in the night, what do you do to protect important evidence coming from a
compromised Mac OS X laptop or server? Learn how to properly image a drive from a Macintosh
to support a chain of evidence. Discover everyday usage commands to reduce the staggering
amount of information that can be stored on today’s typical hard drives. Use some of Tiger’s
new features such as Spotlight and Automator to search and analyze the contents of an HFS+
file system. Compile and run open source Forensic tools such as SleuthKit, Autopsy, Foremost,
Fatback and DCFLDD on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4). Build up your Forensic toolkit and your comfort
level for what the Net might bring your way.
You can design and implement effective Software Asset Management (SAM) practices for your
organization that will accomplish the dual goals of software license compliance to reduce legal
exposure, and efficiency of IT asset management to eliminate over-spending on software and
computing assets. This session will provide an overview of software license compliance, coupled
with a step-by-step sample audit process for enterprise-wide software and IT asset audits,
with instructions on how to use the results for software license compliance and for appropriate
software purchasing. Learn how to reduce software/hardware expenses while also reducing
legal exposure from unlicensed software. Additional study resources will be provided.

Future of Digital Photography
Ross Allen, Technology Specialist,
Hewlett-Packard Company
Photoshop is considered a tool for retouching scans and preparing images for print and the Web.
It is also the most powerful paint program ever seen in the digital world. Bert Monroy, considered
one of the pioneers of digital art, will guide you through the process of creating images from
scratch. If there has ever been a time when you needed an image that could not be photographed,
this session is for you. He will introduce you to techniques for image enhancement and creation
that will stimulate your creative drive and send you into a world limited only by your imagination.
Mac OS X Tiger provides a variety of features and technologies that enable Macs and PCs running
Windows to work seamlessly together. Macs and PCs can easily share files, share the same
network and can even share the same peripherals, like printers, scanners and cameras. Switching
to the Mac has become a very popular activity and this session will help you to learn what makes
a Mac such a fun, approachable and productive computer. The session will also describe how
easy it is to migrate information from a Windows system to the Mac and how to share files and
peripherals in a mixed environment.
Join this highly entertaining session as David Pogue makes Apple’s newest Mac OS X operating
system – Tiger 10.4 – sing, dance and walk on its head. Witness a parade of undocumented
shortcuts, learn how to use which features when, and marvel at the comedy that can be had at
a technical seminar. Based on his book, “Mac OS X: The Missing Manual,” the #1 bestselling
Macintosh book, this session is a life preserver tossed to anyone who’s interested in finding out
which of the 200 new Tiger features are worth learning and which old features wound up in new
places.
Before the advent of automatic cameras, you couldn’t shoot well without learning some very
fundamental photographic concepts. With all-automatic digital cameras, users are able to get
very good pictures right away, without ever having to learn the photography basics. Unfortunately,
in many cases it’s these basic skills that can mean the difference between a good picture and
a great picture. In this class, I cover all of the fundamental photographic concepts that a good
photographer needs to know, whether they’re shooting digital or film. From understanding
the effect of focal length on your composition, to knowing how your light meter works, to a
comprehension of the values of different exposure choices, you’ll learn to take over many of the
decisions that your camera is currently making for you. However, digital is different from film in
many ways, and has its own set of fundamental skill requirements. Histograms, basic controls,
white balance and more are also covered in detail. Shooting is only half the process of making
a good photo and so this program delves into a bit of Photoshop, in addition to shooting. Finally,
along the way, a fair amount of basic photography instruction is included – what makes a good
picture, how to visualize a scene, and how to turn what your eyes see into a picture. Whether
you use an expensive digital SLR, or a more affordable point-and-shoot, you’ll take better pictures
after this class.
Even if you have the fastest computer or the hottest new editing software, it won’t make a bit of
difference in the quality of your desktop movie projects. The most advanced color correction and
post – production tricks can help a little, but what’s the true secret to creating awesome looking
movies? Answer: Awesome looking footage! This seminar will condense 2 years of film school
into 75 minutes- how to get stunningly beautiful, Hollywood quality results from any DV camcorder
by knowing the best camera settings to use for different shooting situations, how to use available
light or your own lights for the best results, shooting aesthetics and cinematographic techniques,
and how to capture clear location sound.
We all have stories about the events, people, and places in our lives, and the iLife applications
(iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand) pull it all together for you, providing
powerful and intuitive way to tell your story. iLife allows nonprofessionals to achieve amazingly
professional results with your digital media: photos, movies, music. Learn tips and tricks on how to
organize and enhance your digital photos with iPhoto, organize and manage your music collection
with iTunes, create your own music with GarageBand – and then pull them all together in iMovie
HD: photos, videos and music – even your own narrative – to build your story into a movie. Then
learn how easy it is to share this bit of magic with your family, friends or the world by posting it on
the web (with just a click) or create an incredible DVD with pre-designed Hollywood-style menus
that you can customize with your digital media – all on your Mac! Any Mac user who uses any of
the iLife apps on a regular basis should attend this session.
Digital Photography continues to shape our world and our culture as images become as ubiquitous
to sharing experiences as are our stories. Enjoy a technical insight into the future of this fascinating technology and discover how the next generation of digital optics will create cameras that
“see like the eye,” and change our expectations of what digital photographs can look like. You’ll
learn how the trends in digital image sensors and image processing technology are pushing the
boundaries for consumer and professional products, while gaining a deeper understanding of the
basic physics involved with image capture, pixel processing and output. Whether you’re an mateur
or professional photographer, you won’t want to miss this visionary session about the future of
picture taking.

Small Business Market Symposium
11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Phil Goodman, Owner, Goodman Consulting Andy Espo, Mac Guy, Call Andy! Macintosh Consulting
Ben Levy, Owner, Solutions Consulting
You’ve already shown yourself to be smarter than most people running a small
business – you use a Mac! In this essential session, a panel of experts will
guide you through important considerations and options you need to know for
your office hardware, servers, network services, desktop configuration and IT
management. Every step of the way, we will highlight what the Mac can do
to make your work more effective and rewarding. You’ll learn when and why
to change ISPs, bring servers in-house, outsource hosting, manage desktops,
create collaborative workflows, manage IT policies, IT budgeting and so much
more.
u Small Business Checklist
Regardless of industry, growing small businesses all have a core set of needs
when it comes to computing. We’ll help you understand why your IT structure
is the way it is, why you use the programs you do and what changes will have
strongest positive impact on your business so you can get the best return on
your investment. As consultants having already worked intimately with a wide
variety of businesses, we already know quite a lot about your business and its
IT needs.
u Business Management Solutions
Every business has a set of mission critical data and applications that manage
it. Every business needs to manage its financial data and customer data. Your
business may need point of sale software, customer relationship management
(CRM) software, inventory management software, production management
software, and other software unique to your business model. In this session,
we’ll discuss the pros and cons of using off-the-shelf solutions versus
developing custom software. We’ll survey the available commercial products
in key categories, and we’ll provide an orientation to building custom database
solutions.
u Business Communications and Collaboration
Key to running a successful small business is effective communication.
Whether you have just one computer or a network, your Mac can handle all
your business communications. We’ll explore the pros and cons of traditional
and VoIP telephone systems and how to make the most of other next generation IP-based communications services. Learn how to streamline and automate
your business workflow and customize everything to reflect the unique needs
of your organization. Put the latest Macintosh technology – Macintosh
hardware, Tiger’s automator, Mail, iChat AV and some indispensable
applications to work in your business!
TB
u Servers & Network Services
Mac OS X Server and other OS X products provide the ability for you to host
many of your own services. We’ll not only talk about what can be hosted by
your own server but we’ll also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
being your own host. We’ll discuss mail and Web servers, shared calendars
and address books, virtual private networks (VPN), blogging, music servers,
backup and more. By hosting your own services you’ll be able to respond to
your own needs much more quickly than if you are outsourced to a provider.
However, some of these services require more attention than others and we’ll
explain how much involvement you might have with each.
u Office Infrastructure
Your office’s technology infrastructure includes the networks (data and voice)
you use in your office along with the power and cooling needs to keep it
running. While all networks are governed by certain standard configuration
requirements, every office has unique needs that are determined by your
business workflow. So you need extensive storage? Do you transfer a lot of
data to and from the office? Do you require special application servers? What
are your voice communication requirements? All of these factors impact the
architecture of your network and the physical requirements. In this session,
we’ll discuss these topics, introduce issues you may not have considered, and
explain how to get the answers.
u Technology Management
A clear view of IT management should impact everything else, including
whether or not a specific business direction makes sense. You’ll need to
consider training, documentation, defining responsibilities, security, regulatory
issues, determining future directions, etc. Desktop Management is a crucial,
ongoing process that can be one of the more expensive aspects of managing
your computers. OS X helps to minimize those costs. In this section, we’ll
go over strategies, tips and tricks for selecting the right software, creating
desktop images, rolling out new computers, keeping up to date, planning for
obsolescence and basic troubleshooting.

& Learning in the Digital Age
David Warlick, The Landmark Project
The very nature of information has changed in just over a decade. Yet this new
information environment is home to our students. The world of information
scratched or printed on paper is as foreign to them as most classrooms.
To them information glows, grows, changes constantly and it is irresistibly
interactive. This compelling presentation will illustrate how many teachers
and students are already entering the new information environment, where
teachers shine and students play their knowledge in order to celebrate and
become life-long learners.

uMaking Media with Motivated Minds
Hall Davidson, Director, California Student Media and Multimedia
Festival, Digital Educator Network, Discovery Education
u1:1 Impact - How to Get There
From 39 years of experience, the California Student Media Festival learned that
digital video projects do not need to be tied to camcorders and other expensive
solutions. Many meaningful projects are built strictly in the computer. It
is critically important to structure digital assets so media makers are not
overwhelmed. There are ready-made online digital construction kits available
for free (Kitzu) and subscription (Discovery) sites. Access lists of (sometimes)
copyright-friendly images and music. Build with QuickTime files, flash, and
(yes!) Windows media! Powerful student examples will be demonstrated in
this entertaining and informative session.
Students at Sedgwick High School enjoy a rich 1:1 relationship with
technology, having had their own wireless Apple iBooks for the past four years.
Hear how teaching and learning look different as a result of the seamless
integration of technology. See examples of what it’s like to be a student in
the Digital Age where a 1:1 learning environment allows students to become
more than consumers of information – it empowers them to become leaders,
creators and producers of new knowledge. If you are thinking about putting a
laptop in the hands of your students or simply want to know more about a 1:1
learning environment, then this session is for you!

uAn Educator’s Guide to Blogging
David Warlick, The Landmark Project
What is a podcast and why should a teacher care? This engaging presentation
will explore the nature of a podcast, its history and how podcasting is already
being utilized by pioneering educators to promote more rigorous learning.
Participants will collaborate with the presenter to produce a real podcast
program, including monologue, interviews, royalty-free music, and explore
common podcasting software and publishing techniques. Learn to take your
classroom on the air.
It is a sign of our times that such an awkward term as “blogging” should
integrate itself so quickly and so powerfully into our culture. This session
will acquaint educators with the concept of weblogs (blogs), RSS, and
opportunities to establish a professional blog. Participants will also be exposed
to practices where weblogs are being used to manage classroom assignments,
communicate more effectively with school and classroom stakeholders, and to
promote better literacy skills in students.

11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Hosted by Dave Hamilton, The Mac Observer
In June 2005, Steve Jobs proclaimed that Podcasting is “The Hottest thing
in Radio” and the nascent technology took off from underground to genuine
media phenomenon. Today Fortune 500 companies are adding Podcasts to
their marketing mix, new businesses are being started, and the paradigm
shift in journalism that started with vanity Web pages and continued with
blogging was sent into orbit. The Macworld Podcasting Market Symposium
brings together innovators, market makers, opportunists and media visionaries
to share their thoughts and experiences riding this newest wave of Internet
opportunity. Network with fellow Podcasters while learning the tactics that are
making them successful in this unique gathering.

will talk about the path that led to them starting their podcast, how they do
it remotely, and why it makes total sense for not just the business in which
they’re involved, but for others as well. Production techniques will be limited
to general principles and ideas for how to produce a podcast that takes very
little post-production time or effort. Learn what it takes to start a podcast and
why it makes sense to do so. Ideal for anyone looking to gain some insight and
experience into both the public relations and technical aspects of running a
podcast in a small business.
uHow to be an Engaging Podcaster
Shawn King, Host, Your Mac Life
