I ’m Joe Kirby, and I’ll be the President of your Student’s Union for the next year of your University life. It’s going to be an action packed year with the planning of the new Union South Redevelopment (see page 5) but it’s also going to be the most fun you’ve ever had. If you missed out on all the great things at your Union last year, now’s the time to get involved. Make sure that you pop in to the Union as soon as you’ve unpacked and settled back in. There’s going to be loads going on particularly during the first couple of weeks of term. You can come in to have a bite to eat, check out what’s on in the Union this term, meet up with a few old friends (and maybe make some new ones), and get some of those ‘must do’s’ sorted out like buying your NUS Extra card or sorting your insurance out with our on-campus partners Endsleigh. So what does the Union do other than Top B? At the heart of campus, the Union provides a fantastic array of activities to enhance your experience here. With over 250 societies and sports clubs, there are loads of ways to get involved in your Students’ Union. University isn’t just about lectures and seminars. The entertainment that you’ll find in Union South consists of internationally renowned acts and club nights where you’ll become a regular attendee. 2 The Union isn’t however, just a nightclub. We’re here to help you. We offer confidential advice and impartial welfare support, campaign on issues that affect students as well as acting as an independent impartial medium through which you can send your academic feedback. Opportunities await - you’ll get out exactly what you put in, so get involved! Most importantly, the Union is led and directed by you, its members. Every year, we elect over 130 democratic positions to represent your views. You’ll meet the elected ‘sabbs’ and officers who will help you with whatever you need and you can make your voice heard through Union Council. To bring about the changes you want, you can stand for election yourself (details of which can be found on page 32). You really can change the way things are done here at Warwick and have a positive impact as an actively involved member. Lastly, why get involved in activities here at the Union? Simply, they’ll make it the time of your life! It’s up to you to engage with the issues that affect you. It’s down to us to help you enjoy your time here! After all, it’s your Union, so make the most of it! Joe Kirby PRESIDENT It’s your Union So where does your money go? Unlike, other venues, the Students’ Union is NOT just a club or a bar. There’s a wealth of other services that the Union provides to enhance everyone’s time here at Warwick and that’s what your money goes towards paying for. Imagine life at Warwick without any societies and sports clubs, campaigns like the anti-top up fees, One World Week and WSAF, Advice and Welfare Services and democracy. In a word, it’d be RUBBISH! So when you buy your pint of purple at Warwick you get real added value for your £2.10 – not only does it buy you your favourite tipple, it also pays for all the other services that the Students’ Union offers. 16% of all your money is spent on Advice and Welfare Services. This includes the 7,000 enquiries that go through their doors every year for advice on areas such as finance, housing, immigration, student safety. These are all services that are vital to ensuring that students have the best time possible at Warwick. Imagine having noone to turn to if you needed help, no-one to check over your contracts before you signed for a house and no-one to offer you free and confidential advice on anything you need help with. 31% goes towards funding democracy. This Union is run by it’s students – that means you! Without this funding, we could not afford to be run in this way and you’d be stuck with other people making decisions for you. Each year, students elect people to represent them and the price you pay at our bars pays for everything from the Sabbatical Officers to Union Council and Referenda. You really do have a huge say in how your Students’ Union is run and it’s with the profits from your £2.10 that we can afford to do this. 22% pays for sports clubs and 23% for societies. Without funding from the Union, sports clubs and societies could not exist and lets face it, that’d mean you’d have a pretty dull time at Uni! Not only does some of this money go towards society budgets and funding projects but also helps pay for all the resources on offer and staff who are there to help all the clubs and societies. Warwick is lucky to have the most societies out of any Students’ Union in the UK and all of these cost the Union money. Obviously, everyone has different interests and it’s important that we can afford to help and support each of these societies in the work that they do. 8% contributes towards campaigns and representation. Think of all the campaigns you’ve seen around campus – anti-top up fees, environmental issues, antiracism, sexual health, the list is endless. All the publicity and materials that these campaigns need to raise awareness are provided for by the Students’ Union. 8% of the money made from pints of purple goes towards providing this and raising awareness of these important issues that effect you as a student. Running campaigns not only allows students to raise awareness of issues but enables them to develop skills, such as organising events, and ultimately enhance their time at Warwick. Next time you’re in Cholo buying a drink, remember that for your money you’re not only getting your drink but 180 societies, 75 sports clubs, advice and welfare provision, democracy and loads of campaigns all for just £2.10 – BARGAIN!! Over 2U Over the last year, we have launched Over 2U, a student consultation project, whereby all 20,000 students were asked to contribute and tell us what they thought of the Union. This consisted of online surveys, focus groups and more informal channels of communication. The response was tremendous and we now have a full report of the findings. Over the coming year, these findings will be presented to the student body and changes will be made as a direct result of what students told us. The most important thing to remember is that if you have any suggestions, comments or ideas – let us know! Every single piece of feedback is read and responded to. Your comments really do make a difference to how the Union is run! 3 University of Warwick Students’ Union www.warwicksu.com L ast year you guys guzzled 137,000 pints of purple and 66,000 cups of coffee, but where does all the money go? Obviously, as with any venue, some money has to go back into the running of the Union, through payroll and operational costs. Ultimately though, all the money is spent on you – the students. 4 Building for the future There will be facilities for students who choose not to or can’t drink and the building will be completely non-smoking indoors, with outside areas designed to allow smokers to enjoy a cigarette in comfort. At first glance we may appear to have good facilities and it is true they are considerably better than many “spit and sawdust” Students’ Unions. However that doesn’t take into account our ambitions to grow and develop our services to be the undisputed number one Students’ Union in the country. The reality is that the existing building limits what we can achieve so we submitted a proposal to the University for a new building. Will Warwick be without a Students’ Union? One of the most common pieces of feedback we received is students asking to see bigger acts at Warwick, but unfortunately at the moment we are limited by the Market Place’s capacity of 1000, and even then views can be obscured by the pillars. One of the most exciting developments in the new building will be a venue with good views for a larger capacity allowing us to attract the biggest acts to Warwick. There are other things that we’d love to be doing now but the building prevents us from doing. We want to be able to provide students with somewhere to come to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner but the design of the building, particularly the back of house areas that most students don’t see make it very difficult to do this easily. For those who aren’t interested in partying hard there will be increased and varied provision for people to enjoy a quiet drink in the evenings, and the building will allow us to deliver vastly improved and more consistent services for those students who spend time on campus in the vacation. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE REDEVELOPMENT? The University have recently approved an £11m budget for the redevelopment. The main building works will begin in Summer 2008 with the hope of reopening, with a brand new building, for Freshers’ 2009. Whilst the building work is going on we will continue to operate as fully as we can. Obviously there will be some reduction in our operations but we will still be providing entertainment and catering facilities to rival any other Students’ Union in the country. The work will be phased so that there will always be some provision for students in Union South. Remember, the Students’ Union is not just a night club. Everything that happens in Union North (the building next door) will run as normal. All sports clubs and societies will continue to run, Advice and Welfare will continue to be there to support everyone and students will still be able to get involved in Union democracy. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE? Keep checking the Union website at: www. warwicksu.com/unionsouthrebuild. Any questions or suggestions can be emailed to James Gadsby Peet, the Commercial Development and Communications Officer at, [email protected] The current Union South building (centre) An artists’ impression of the new Union South 5 University of Warwick Students’ Union www.warwicksu.com U nion South was built as a social space for students in 1975. At the time there were just a few thousand students at the University. Now over 30 years later, the University population almost 20,000 students and Union South building is no longer fit for purpose. What’s more, unlike a lot of things, getting involved in the Students’ Union is actually a whole load of fun! It can be all too easy to sail through your time at University without even thinking about becoming in any way involved and using the Students’ Union, but to do so would be an awful waste of what should be the best days of your life. INVOLVEMENT DAY JOB OPPORTUNITIES One of the best ways to get up and running is to come along to Involvement Day, hosted here in the Students’ Union on Friday Week 1 (October 5th). Making the most of student life on a limited income can be difficult. So if you’re looking to pick up some much needed extra cash and would relish the buzz of working as part of a lively, dynamic team then look no further than the Students’ Union. Here, you’ll be able to find out exactly what opportunities are up for grabs with all our Union committees and campaigning groups on hand throughout the day to offer you information on what they do and how you can sign up. You’ll also be able to find out more about how you can help us run Union elections and make the most of the many job opportunities here at the Union. Getting involved Democracy in your Union W e’re under no illusions that the word ‘democracy’ sums up all kinds of boring images, but I can assure you that in a Students’ Union this isn’t true! The Union is directed by its members, which means you really do get a say in how the it is run. As a Fresher it’s unlikely that you’ll know a great deal, if anything at all, about Union democracy, so read on for a quick insight and hopefully you’ll soon be making changes to the way your Union is run. UNION REFERENDA are online ballots, POLICY is the Union’s collective stance that any student can vote in by simply logging into the Union website. Our most controversial and important issues are put to referenda so that every Warwick student can have their say. These are often the most exciting periods of democratic activity so keep a look out for this in Week 9, Term 1 and 2. Around 3,000 students vote in our referenda, making them one of the most representative and successful in the country. on any particular issue. Any student can influence the way the Union is run by writing and proposing a policy, even if you have no previous involvement. General Meetings, Council and Referenda all vote on policy, and then the Executive Committee work out how to implement it. GENERAL MEETINGS are held every term. They are large, town-hall style meetings that any student can come to and vote on important issues, as well as grilling the Officers you elected. You can find out more about when the first General Meeting will be held on the Union website. UNION COUNCIL is the elected, representative body of this Union, similar to a Parliament but much cooler! It meets three times a term and passes Union policy, as well as offering students the chance to ask Union Officers any questions they have. This is where you can really get involved and have your say. To stand to be a Union Councillor check out the Union website at, www.warwicksu. com/ucelection. So whatever your preconceptions of democracy are, it really isn’t boring at all and can, in fact, be surprisingly stimulating once you get voting and talking about issues that actually involve you. We advise you to get stuck in from day one and start getting what you want out or your Union. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? One of the quickest and easiest ways is to stand to become a Union Councillor. All you have to do is nominate yourself, stand in a small election at the start of the year and soon you could be sitting in a meeting discussing issues and changing the way we do things on campus, locally and even nationally. Every student has the opportunity to have their say on how the Union is run but becoming a Union Councillor is the easiest and most direct way to make your voice heard. Nominate yourself online now at www. warwicksu.com/ucelection 32 Getting involved Student Campaigns C an I actually make a difference as a Warwick Student? Last year Warwick was a hotbed of student campaigning and here’s just a flavour of some of ways Warwick students really did make their mark... Throughout the year, our Campaigns Officers ran themed weeks to raise awareness on a variety of issues and gained huge wins on a local and national level. For two weeks, the whole campus turned green as the Environment Officer and the Ethics and Social Justice Officer got together with the People & Planet society to organise, Go Green Week and the first ever Fairtrade Week. Other Liberation Week campaigns included Pride Week, Women’s Week, Students with Disabilities Week and Rise Against Racism Week. These campaigns are all aimed at eliminating prejudice and oppression. The Welfare Committee staged a World Aids Day event and also raised awareness of drink spiking, safer sex, and safe living. We held a very successful Housing Day where we gave out practical advice to all students on when and how to look for off-campus accommodation. We also campaigned against the BNP during the local elections in the local community. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? All campaigning groups will be represented at Involvement Day on Friday Week 1 (October 5th) and will be able to give you information on exactly what they do and how you can get involved. Warwick campaigns achieve change because students get together and make the difference happen. We can’t do it without you so get involved. If you’d like to find out more about any of our campaigns email president@sunion. warwick.ac.uk 33 University of Warwick Students’ Union www.warwicksu.com The priority campaign of the year focused on top-up fees, which were introduced last September. At the start of the year, over 200 students went down to London on the National Fees Demo to fight against top up fees. We joined thousands of other students from across Britain calling for MPs and the Prime Minister to keep the £3000 cap on fees. Throughout the year, the fees campaign continued with lobbies of parliament and the first ever ‘Hitch Against the Hike’. 3,000 Warwick students signed postcards which were delivered to Downing Street by students who hitch-hiked to London. As well as raising awareness of top-up fees, the campaign also raised over £900 for charity. Well now’s your chance to start a new year by getting healthy and meeting new people at the same time. Sport at Warwick can also be a great way to relax in between lectures as well as providing you with a brilliant personal development opportunity. Whether you’re a budding Olympian or just in it for the laugh, we’re confident that somewhere amongst our 75 sports clubs there will be something for you. All of our clubs cater for absolute beginners, as well as more advanced members, so be it skydiving or scuba diving, there’s never been a better time to give it a go. In order to join our clubs you will need to be a member of Warwick Sport. Membership costs just £32 for the year, which also gets you access to all sports halls, squash courts and the pool. You can join now online at www.warwicksport.warwick.ac.uk. Or you can pop along in Week 1 to our Festival of Sport or to Sports Fair in The Students’ Union (check out all the fairs on pages 35 & 36 for details). During the Festival of Sport, access to all sporting facilities on campus is totally free, so you have a chance to try before you buy. On the Tuesday, the Sports Fair will be held in the Students’ Union and will give you the chance to meet representatives from all of our clubs to chat, ask questions and sign up. Student Societies S ocieties are one of the main forms of extra curricula activity here at Warwick. The Societies Federation has well over 200 different societies. They are run on a day to day basis by more than 1,000 student volunteer members. All in all Societies Federation has more than 7000 members. We have award winning theatre and dance societies, who regularly perform in the Students’ Union and in the nearby Warwick Arts Centre. Media societies cover everything from radio, press and TV to photography, a student cinema, and our very own record label. There are far too many societies for us to list so why not spend some time browsing through what’s on offer at www.warwicksu.com To join a Society you first need to become a member of the Societies Federation, which costs only £8 for one year. This money goes back to societies so that they can buy equipment, subsidise transport etc to carry out their activities. Once you have done that you can join as many individual societies as you like. They typically cost around £2.50 each. You can do this on line at the web address above once you have registered with the University. Alternatively look out for the Societies Fair in the Students’ Union from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th October where you have a chance to meet and speak to representatives from all of our societies and join up there and then. Remember to come on all three days, as there will be different societies on each day. If you have any questions please do e-mail the Societies Officer, Tom Lindsay, at [email protected]. Music societies have the use of the Music Centre in the Arts Centre and cater for just about every taste and ability. Academic societies support individual courses, offer mentoring schemes, and often provide career advice. There are also a small number of welfare based societies, such as Nightline and the Union Support society, who are here to help you out. With all this variety you are bound to find an activity that you enjoy and meet fantastic new people. If by any chance you can’t find what you are looking for you can always set up a brand new society by getting 30 people together and talking to the Societies Federation Committee. Societies at Warwick have always been renowned for their welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Whether you have had a hobby all your life or want to try something completely new you will be made welcome at Warwick. 35 University of Warwick Students’ Union www.warwicksu.com All the major political parties operate as Union societies, along with a variety of other campaigning groups as well. There are religious and cultural societies, whose activities each year culminate in the hugely successful One World Week, which is currently the largest studentrun event of its kind in the world. Did you really make here’s 10 things I t would be the easiest thing in the world to breeze through your time here at Warwick and not get involved in any of the amazing stuff that take place here. Accommodation S checklist o you’re living off-campus now, away from your comforts where all you had to do was to pay a termly bill and everything was sorted for you. With that in mind, here’s some handy advice on things you might want to be aware of as you move in... Make sure you ask to see copies of the current gas safety certificate and of the electrical safety report (sometimes called a Periodic Inspection Report). As soon as you arrive read the gas and electricity meters, find out who your gas and electricity supplier is and contact them to give them the meter readings and your details. INVENTORY If you are paying a deposit against any damage that might occur during your tenancy, without an up to date and accurate inventory (list of contents) it may be difficult to get your deposit back. Make an inventory and note the condition of all items, including things like the carpets, curtains and wallpaper, as well as furniture. Once you’ve done this make copies of the inventory and get all your housemates and the landlord/agent to agree to it. If the landlord/agent won’t co-operate, take photographs and get someone who doesn’t live with you to witness the inventory. REPAIRS YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES As a tenant, you have an obligation to use the property in a responsible way and take proper care of it. An example of this is to turn the water off if there were a risk of a burst pipe. The landlord might not actually be responsible for repairing damage caused by the tenant but if they are, they cannot be expected to carry out repairs until they have been told about them! Once you have reported the problem make sure you give your landlord time to act. Try to get them to agree a definite time and date when the work will be done (you should be notified in advance anyway so that you can be in to allow access). COUNCIL TAX Most full time student households do not pay council tax. If you do get a bill from the local Council contact Advice and Welfare Services for advice. INSURANCE You need to insure your own belongings. Check to see if you are covered by your parents’ home insurance policy. If not, shop around and make sure you are getting a good deal with both cost and cover. Have any repairs or improvements that were agreed previously been carried out? Are any repairs needed now? Normally the landlord of a property has an absolute responsibility to maintain and carry out certain repairs including: TV LICENCES The structure and exterior of the house The installations for gas, water, heating and electricity supplies Plumbing and sanitary conveniences such as baths, sinks and toilets RENTAL AGREEMENTS WHERE TO GET HELP If you are considering hiring washing machines, videos etc. make sure you understand the terms of the agreement. See if you can rent them on a monthly basis. If not, make sure you can return them at the end of June without having to pay for a full year’s rental. You can get help on all these things and more from the Advice and Welfare Services website or www.warwicksu.com or by visiting in the drop in centre on Level 2 of Union North. All students who have a mains powered television are required to have a licence. One per household is usually sufficient but this may depend on how the tenancy is constructed. If you are not sure take advice. 39 University of Warwick Students’ Union www.warwicksu.com GAS, ELECTRICITY, WATER AND TELEPHONE 40 Ever dreamed of becoming a Grand Prix driver?
