I have been at the club over a year now and it is safe to say I still absolutely
love it! You could even say BARB are now my number one club due to the
shambles going on at my other club Leeds United at the minute.
I just want to say thank you to everyone at the club who couldn’t have given
me a warmer welcome which I appreciate massively so thank you to Debra,
the girls and of course Brent along with many others.
Of course it was a disappointing season and I was so happy with the reprieve
of relegation so I just hope this time round we don’t have to deal with that
again and we stay comfortably clear of that dreaded drop zone in what is undoubtedly a very competitive league.
Last season against Glossop was a tale of 2-0’s as both sides won of that score
line on their home turf. Glossop North End finished the season in an extremely impressive third place and will be looking to go that one step further this
time round. BARB on the other hand will just be looking for a more comfortable and successful season away from the dreaded drop zone.
Only a handful of players remain from Bacup’s squad so plenty of new faces on
show to impress.
Enjoy the game and enjoy the season!

Well here we are again the beginning of a new season with in the main almost a
new squad of players, new club captain, team captain and vice-captain along with
a new first team coach. All of which have impressed me throughout the pre-season, lots of positives with the squad of players we have brought in. Andy Barlow
my new coach has implemented some excellent sessions varied and different,
Jimmy Petruzzi has concentrated on the fitness elements and with Lee Oldham
being named as my Club Captain and Adrian Bellamy as our Team Captain and
Shane Birtles as the Vice Captain, I am hoping all will thrive in their new responsibilities.
Away from the playing staff there have been changes within our commercial department from which I would like to welcome June Worsley and Ian Taylor from
Base, I must compliment them both on the hard work they have committed to
the club along with Debra and Jay Taylor from which for them there is no break
as their work is all of the year round.
Our opening fixture sees the visit of Glossop North End from which we welcome
all from the Derbyshire club especially their stalwart Peter Hammond to whom
was my secretary during my time with them as Manager.
Glossop is always a tough game and this being the opening fixture of a new season
it goes without saying it will be tougher than normally I would expect.
With regard to BARB FC it goes without saying we do not want to be in or anywhere near the situation we were in last season on a slippery slope, we need to
very quickly make up for the disappointment we did encounter.
Whilst it is important to get off to a good start, the season being nine month in
total, it is not about the first couple of weeks, it is about the full nine month.

Missing from the first few squads will be players to whom have got suspensions
carried over from last season and this includes Gareth Wager to whom gets married today to my mate Gary Lowe’s daughter Zoey, the former Curzon Ashton
manager. I always said Gareth's timing was poor but on this occasion Gareth could
not have timed his wedding any better at the time from which he is serving a
three match ban.
From all at BARB FC we wish Gareth & Zoey all the health, wealth, and happiness
together from this day on.
Finally, looking back onto pre-season this has been very much a worthwhile period by being able to assess individual players not only in their comfortable natural
position but in an unfamiliar position. Results are not important, what is important
is fitness, team bonding, team shape and being able to adopt new positions within
that shape and all in all the squad in its entirety have done exceptionally well however that counts for nothing, what matters now is the three points.
Enjoy the game

It’s a classic quiz question — which is the smallest town in England to have been the
home of a top division football club? The answer — Glossop.
Of course, it’s a long time since that 1899/1900 season but the Hillmen (or Hillsmen,
as they were known back then, in honour of owner Sir Samuel Hill-Wood) supporters
never forget the proud history of the club. However more recently they were given
some more moments that they will talk about in the town for years to come and are
hopeful of providing a few more.
Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches.
They entered the North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced professional players
in 1894. Their Chairman and benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill
Wood who later left to become Chairman of Woolwich Arsenal. In 1898, on their
third application, they were admitted to the Football League.
In their first season, by finishing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion
to the Football League Division 1. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-0 result against Nottingham Forest.
Glossop played in League Division 2 until the end of the 1914/15 season, In 1908/09
reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay.
They ceased playing during the latter part of the First World War but were reformed
by Oswald Partington MP, who had been club captain in the 1890’s.
Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of which they were champions in 1927/28. They also won the Gilgryst
Cup on three occasions.
Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949.
19

In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at
Surrey Street. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire Leagues before becoming founder members of the North
West Counties League in 1982.
Glossop have spent most of the time in the First (now Premier) division, although
much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against relegation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only
the hard work of board members and supporters kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime. There was a little success — the club was Manchester Premier Cup
winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01.
More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008/09 saw the biggest day in the history of the club after Steve Young & Terry Hincks’ side embarked
on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They
played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for
supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in
the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the
Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way.
Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run
awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away.
This forms part of a more dramatic overhaul that has seen a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new clubhouse, a new covered standing area and new perimeter fencing. Ground grading for the league above has been achieved too and the club feels it
is ready to progress up the pyramid.
Manager Chris Willcock is the man appointed to the task, and he had a very exciting
first season in charge in 2013-14, taking the club to a 3rd place finish – it’s highest in
the NWCFL – and a Derbyshire Senior Cup Final. Optimism is high for 2014-15 and
everyone at the club is hopeful that Glossop North End can now realise plans for an
exciting future as a club at the heart of the community.

There was much to be positive about in Bacup & Rossendale Borough’s 3-2
friendly loss against Ev-Stik Prem side Ashton United.
With it being a pre-season friendly there were many new faces on show for
both sides however it was an extremely good contest.
The Evo-Stik side started the brighter pushing forward and they received a
dubious penalty for a handball after just four minutes which was dispatched
well.
Bacup’s new looking team then woke up and started to gel as they had
their first real attack of the game. Gamble was dispatching really well from
the middle of the park and he picked out Janaid who showed his pace and
delivered well and Zamma’s acrobatic shot was well over.
However just moments later and the equaliser came, a long ball forward
was flicked on well by the new captain Adrian Bellamy and latched onto by
the new signing Yves Zamma who emphatically lobbed the ball straight
over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Ashton were then resorted just to long shots which never really threatened
the target.
Adrian Bellamy was looking dangerous in and around the box as he reacted
quickest to hook the ball just wide of the mark.
BARB then started to pass the ball around really comfortably which was a
pleasure to see especially Andrew Gamble who’s tenacious pressing and
fluid passing was impressing to all.
However right on half-time that man Gamble rushed a free-kick and played
a square ball straight to the opposition who drove forward and slotted
home to take Ashton into a 2-1 lead at the break.

BACUP & ROSSENDALE BOROUGH FC OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE
At the start of the second-half there were various shots all from distance
which never really threatened until the 64th minute where Bacup pegged back
once again. A substitute’s first touch saw him slot in Yves Zamma who
shrugged off a defender and found the back of the net once again.
Twelve minutes later and Ashton produced the winning goal through a stunning free-kick which rocketed into the top corner.

Bridlington Town 2-1 BARB
26th July

8. Crook 9. Bellamy 10. Gamble 11. Junaid (Sub McKenzie)
Bacup & Rossendale Borough finalised their pre-season with a narrow 2-1 loss
to Evo-Stik Prem side Bridlington Town.
In an absolutely scorching day by the seaside the Borough really should have
taken the lead after just three minutes. A perfect flick on from Adrian Bellamy
allowed Mo Hassan to battle for the battle in which in the end he got and back
heeled into the path of the oncoming Sam Crook who side foots over from
close range.
However twenty minutes later Bridlington scored the opening goal of the
game. A quick free-kick caught BARB off-guard and Will Waudby tucked it
away.
It was that hot in East Yorkshire that scheduled water breaks were taken just
like in the World Cup.
Bacup stopper Jack McGregor kept the score at 1-0 with a fantastic low save
from a fiercely driven free-kick.
BARB were creating chances galore but they just didn’t have that finishing
touch. Uzzy Zubar capitalised on a loose ball and played in Bellamy who faked
to shot many times but when he did get his shot off it was well blocked on the
line.
Moments later and Bellamy was at the heart of the attack once more. A great
chipped ball by Junaid found Adrian in which he took down and controlled
well, got his shot off but the goalkeeper pulled off a terrific save with his foot.
Half-Time: Bridlington 1-0 BARB
Bridlington doubled their lead on 56 minutes in a much quieter second half.
Ash Allanson broke beyond the Bacup midfield and chipped exquisitely into
the top right corner.
McGregor was pulling off some outstanding saves to keep Bacup in the game,
even the home fans were complimenting and applauding.
27
BACUP & ROSSENDALE BOROUGH FC OFFICIAL MATCHDAY MAGAZINE
11 minutes from the end and BARB eventually found the back of the net. Andrew Gamble who was nipping at the heels of his opposition all game played a
chip ball over the top to set substitute Omar McKenzie clean through and he
flicked the ball over the goalkeeper and rolled the ball home.
It should have been like London Buses a minute later, McKenzie was played in
again but he rolled the ball inches past the post.
It was nearly all square in the final minutes as the Bridlington goalkeeper juggled the ball on the line and just parried it away from a Zubar cross.
