I trust you had some enjoyable quality family time with your children, family and friends. It’s been great to hear some of the stories the children shared about their holidays. A goal for this term is to raise the attendance percentage across our school. I hope that last term you took the time to read through our attendance policy plus the supporting documents. If you didn’t get the opportunity, these are available on our school website and schoolstream app under ‘Policies.’ Staff Milestones At the end of last term we were fortunate to celebrate some important career milestones for our dedicated teachers who have had an impact on many of the children at Saddleworth over the years. Congratulations are in order and must go to Jenny Shepherd and Kathy Cutting who have achieved 30 years of teaching in South Australia and Joyleen Kenny who reached the 40 year milestone. Your passion and dedication towards the education of children is to be commended. Congratulations! growth mindsets amongst ourselves and our students, and how to successfully manage failure to improve learning outcomes and resilience. NAPLAN Online – Getting ready for 2017 The Australian Government is committed to delivering NAPLAN online from 2017, with all schools across the nation transitioning over a 2 to 3 year period. This change will provide each child with a more personalised learning experience and a better assessment. It also means that the results will be returned to you and your child’s teachers within a few weeks, rather than several months. Our school will be participating in a trial of the new online system in August 2016. This trial is not a ‘test’ of content: it is a test of how the new online system will work in a real-life classroom environment. You may hear this trial referred to as the NAPLAN Online Readiness Trial. As party of the trial, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will undertake 2 online readiness tests. Each test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete and this will occur in Week 4. It is important that we participate in this trial before the system is officially in use in 2017 to enable familiarisation with the system in a classroom setting. Participation will allow us to confirm that every school is ready and that our teachers are confident that their students will be able to participate fully. This trial will help our site to be well prepared to complete NAPLAN online in 2017 and provide feedback into final changes at a state wide level. SAPSASA Our students have had some success during last terms Burra Hub Football and Netball Carnival at Blyth. The boys played 3 round-robin games against the Balaklava Hub, Clare 1 and Clare 2 teams, winning each of them. That placed the Burra Hub into the Grand Final match against Clare 2. They were successful in this game, 4-3 to 2-2. Congratulations to all players, particularly Taaj Nicholls, Jake Noble, Jack Roocke, Henry Elson and Damien Lockwood. The Saddleworth girls comprising of Makenzie Schoenberg, Imogen Nourse and Georgia Condon had two teams with Makenzie and Imogen representing in one and Georgia in the other. Both teams played against the same areas as the football, with the girls playing against each other in the Grand Final. The Burra Hub team with Makenzie and Imogen just beat Georgia’s side. Congratulations on a brilliant effort and achievement! SAPSASA State Netball and Football Carnival Congratulations and good luck to Taaj Nicholls, Jack Roocke and Makenzie Schoenberg who have won selection in the Mid North Teams to compete in the State Carnival in Adelaide in Week 4. Visible Learning – What Makes a Good Teacher? At the end of last term we interviewed some students from each year level and asked them the question, ‘What do you think makes a good teacher’? And for the older students, ‘How can teachers support kids to be better learners?’ Staff will collectively go through the responses together this week however the responses show that the visible learning focus has started to be embedded in teacher practice and that students are identifying the key characteristics of what makes a good learner. Below are some of the responses: My teacher encourages me and does their job carefully. My teacher gives me lots of work that helps me learn a lot. I like learning things that are interesting and real to me. (Year 1 student) A good teacher is someone that explains things well; they make kids understand new topics and makes kids have fun so they enjoy school. They try to be the best teacher they can even when they get frustrated with us. My teacher explains things in a clear voice and shows it on the white board and it then gets in your brain so you can understand more. If you need help my teacher helps me or I know to get help from other people. (Year 7 student) A good teacher listens when you have problems, explains things well and has things organised. If I am not understanding something or concentrating, the teacher will help me out. I like learning through games like in Spanish we play Bang and it is fun. (Year 6 student) A good teacher gives you feedback, sets challenges and helps you out. They all help me with my work, they make sure I know what I am doing then they let me go on my own. I like to learn on Studdyladder and use different strategies. (Year 4 student) WALT and WILF from the Middle Primary Class Check out what the MP students are focussing on in maths this fortnight with Mrs Schmaal and Mrs Nichols! Parent Surveys In coming weeks, the parents who have provided their email address will be emailed a link to complete the Parent Opinion Surveys online. This is an informative way that we, as a school, can receive feedback about our school and to work on future directions. Please remember that the surveys are confidential. Parents who do not have an email address or are unable to complete the survey from home are encouraged to contact the Front Office where you can complete the survey on a school computer. This should only take 10 minutes of your time. Thank you in advance. SRC Thank you to the SRC who ran a fun Mini Olympics day on the last day of the term. The soccer goals that the SRC purchased through their fundraising efforts were utilised on this day. I look forward to working with a newly elected SRC this term. Also in this brochure is a sexual behaviour guide for Birth to 9 years which explains age appropriate, concerning and serious behaviours. The brochures are available where all pamphlets are located in the Front Office. Please see me if you have any queries. Attendance Week 9 attendance – 90.3% Week 10 attendance – 78.6% Please be reminded that the target for DECD is 95%. Our Week 10 attendance rate was our lowest recorded. While I understand that illness was a major contributor to low attendance in Term 2, we need to work together to increase our attendance for the benefit of our children and their learning. Please also be reminded that when students are away for 3 or more days, it is reasonable for a doctor’s certificate to be requested.
