Ford does not have a vote in this referendum, but as a leading investor in the UK economy we have a view, and we believe the UK should stay as a member of a reformed EU. This is a very exciting time for Ford. In Europe, our profit, sales and reputation are all moving in the right direction. The UK is Ford’s largest European sales market, and if the UK left the EU it could create economic instability and uncertainty, the full consequences of which are unknown. Our primary interest is in maintaining stability and avoiding uncertainty in the trading environment so that we can continue to build an even stronger business and create a more secure future for our almost 14,000 employees. Whilst our reasons may vary, our view that remaining a member of a reformed EU is one shared by the majority of stakeholders in our industry. If you’d like to know about the automotive industry’s position, please visit the Society of Motor Manufacturers website: www.smmt. co.uk/2016/03/101076/ Just a few days before the referendum is the motorsport event of the year – the Le Mans 24-hour race, which has taken on a whole new meaning for many of us since Ford announced its four-car entry. The fabulous Ford GT supercars will be going flat out to emulate the one-two-three result of the Ford GT40s in 1966, so it really gives us all something to look forward to. Something else to look forward to is the opportunity to sample the all-new Ford Edge at the employee drive events being held at Ford locations starting at the end of this month. The exciting new Edge joins Kuga and EcoSport in our fast-growing SUV family, and I am hugely excited by the potential it presents for us. Sample it for yourselves, and I know you will be equally excited. Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, Andy Barratt, said: “We continue to consolidate and extend our long-standing UK market leadership through continued investment in exciting products and industry-leading technologies, delivered through the strongest UK dealer network. Five vehicles in the UK top 20 and seven leading their segments firmly underline the success of our exciting model range. “SUV segments show significant growth and our EcoSport and Kuga models have been enjoying healthy sales growth; and this summer we see the new Ford Edge, our flagship SUV, arriving in dealerships. New product launches continue with the Fiesta ST200, the most powerful production Fiesta Ranger was in the top three of its market segment during April ever, and the S-MAX Vignale arriving in the coming months.” The official SMMT figures show that total car sales in April were up 2.0 per cent to 189,505 units, compared with April 2015. Ford vehicle sales were 31,695 – 10,567 registrations ahead of its nearest rival. Ford extended its lead in retail car sales, which most accurately reflect the preferences of private buyers. For April, Ford was 3.6 percentage points of retail car sales share ahead of its nearest rival and, for the year to date, the lead was 4.6 percentage points. The Ford Fiesta remained the UK’s best-seller with 7,913 registrations in April, 2,268 sales and 1.2 percentage points of share ahead of its nearest rival. The broad customer appeal of Ford’s car range was demonstrated by Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga, Mustang and Galaxy all occupying top three places in their respective market segments in April. UK light commercial vehicle sales in April were up 11.8 per cent at 27,880 compared with April 2015. Ford light and medium commercials sales were 8,219, up from 6,791 compared with April 2015, corresponding to a 14.3 per cent increase compared with April 2015 The full availability of Ford’s extended CV family has helped deliver these significant increases in sales and share. Fiesta Van, Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom, Transit and Ranger all placed in the top three in their respective market segments. Transit Custom led the CV sales sector Ford News June 2016 7 Ford GTs through the years gather together before Le Mans race The most famous performance car to carry the blue oval was the GT40 – and there were two of them alongside two later Ford GTs in a pre-Le Mans line up at Ford’s heritage workshop at Dagenham. The oldest GT40 was a 1964 MkI race car built by Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough – one of the 12 prototype and 87 production GT40s. Alongside it was a 1969 MkIII road car, regarded as the definitive GT40 road car and one of only seven built, of which four were kept by Ford. Next in the line-up was FMC 1, a 5.4-litre 2005 Ford GT road car, drawing on the best features of the GT40 but 18 inches longer and four inches taller. And, of course, there was one of the four Ford GT supercars which will race at the 24 hours of Le Mans on the weekend of 18-19 June, and hopefully bring home some silverware. Pictured, from left: a 1964 GT40 race car, a rare 1969 road-going GT40, a GT road car from 2005 and the latest 2016 racer which will be competing at Le Mans Management changes at Henry Ford Academy The Henry Ford Academy dealer training organisation has announced three new senior appointments to its management team. The appointments come recently after the official opening of the academy’s state-of-the-art new dealer training facility in Daventry (Ford News April 2016). The new facility merges the capabilities of two previous Ford colleges – the Technical Training Centre located separately at Daventry, and the Henry Ford College in Loughborough – to provide training for technicians, sales staff and management from the UK dealer network. Heading up the organisation is Mark Jones, who takes over from Stuart Harris as Henry Ford Academy manager. Mark is supported by a new principal, Kevin Perks, and vice principal, Dan Savory, who both bring extensive experience in automotive training to the Daventry team. “This is an exciting time for training at Ford, with an outstanding new facility in Daventry, and a revolution in our product line-up which needs to be communicated to our dealer network,” said Ford of Britain marketing director, Lisa Brankin. “Couple that with the industry’s largest apprentice training programme, and you can see the significance of what we are trying to achieve.” “We are delighted to welcome the academy’s new management team, who are ideally qualified to move our training programme forward. We 8 Ford News June 2016 New Henry Ford Academy appointments Mark Jones, second left, Kevin Perks and Dan Savory, together with former manager Stuart Harris, left would also like to thank Stuart Harris for his tremendous contribution over the past six years,” she added. MP impressed after Bridgend visit “I am impressed” - that’s the opinion of Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon after visiting Bridgend and getting an update on its business, community and training plans. Mrs Moon has eagerly supported the plant and its plans over many years and this was her first visit since the announcement of the Dragon engine programme, which was explained in detail by manager Ian Pearson. Together with plant engineering manager Mark Thomas, Ian also explained the widening work of the plant to engage with the local community and support projects through volunteers, knowledge and materials. Mark Thomas outlined the plant’s environmental work to cut energy consumption with a turbine generator and microbial cooling system and future schemes to lower its carbon footprint and operating costs. Recent projects with Y Bont children’s centre, Gorwelian guiding centre, the Llynfi Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon meets Bridgend apprentices, together with plant manager Ian Pearson Valley Woodland plantation and work at Cardiff Wales Airport were also covered. After the briefing, Mrs Moon met apprentices who have created the plant’s dragon mascot, before concluding her visit with a walk along the lines to the area being cleared to accommodate the restructuring of production for the new Dragon engine. Mrs Moon said she was most impressed by the opportunities offered to the workforce to progress through the company and to undertake training to increase skills; the fact that 65% of the Bridgend factory’s management had undertaken the Ford apprenticeship scheme showed how far people could progress within the Company. Ford News June 2016 9 Outdoor adventure course for Bridgend apprentices First year apprentices at Bridgend engine plant have attended a five-day outdoor development course at Sennybridge, in the Brecon Beacons. They faced a variety of challenges designed to test them individually and as a team and it was tough going, but very rewarding. The first year apprentices who took part in the course were: Josef Ahmed, Nathan Jones, Samuel Da Rosa, Shaun Jones, Joshua Evans, Ryan Brown, Callum Pitt and William May-White. Electrical apprentice mentor Garry Evans, accompanied them. The activities included caving, wet gorge walking, climbing, abseiling and a team mission which involved planning, navigation and sleeping outdoors for a night. Left: the apprentices with mentor Garry Evans Panther crank team club slim down to a healthier way of life Members of the Panther crank team in Dagenham Engine Plant have been on a weight-loss programme since the start of 2016 and have lost 121lb (55kg) between them. The team took up a healthy eating regime as a way of motivating each other to get fit. Luke Jackman lost the most weight of all and said: “The club came about due to people on the shift being on days and all gaining weight. A few members had already started losing weight and thought it would be a good idea to have a competition to motivate each other to lose more. “I was the eventual ‘winner’, as I lost 11.7 per cent of my body weight in the 10 weeks, but in reality we’re all winners as everyone in the competition started eating healthier food and taking more exercise. The crank line team is a lot slimmer and healthier now.” 10 Ford News June 2016 The Panther crank team at DEP which lost 121lb between them, from left: Pat Manning, Chris Rust, Rory Lennon, Jas Bassi, Rau Matharu, Tony Styles, Paul Monan, Luke Jackman, Hari Gopalan and Eric Msimbo. Not pictured are Andy Keane and Grace Dalton Fordivas add Fordudes for Dunton relaunch Daventry CRC team raise £130 for JDRF The Fordivas group at Dunton is re-launching in 2016 under the title of Fordivas & Dudes. The new group is enlarging to incorporate fund-raising ideas to support Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in the search for a cure for multiple cancers including prostate and testicular forms of the disease. Previously, Fordivas has raised more than £35,000 for CRUK by taking part in Race For Life (R4L) runs and other events. One of the first charity fund-raisers that new ‘Fordudes’ can get involved in is the Basildon Pretty Muddy 5k event on Saturday, 25 June. This mud-based obstacle course will have a Ford-sponsored obstacle, which this year will be a chance for Fordudes to sling mud at Fordivas. And if mud isn’t your thing, then a R4L event at Gloucester Park in Basildon will be held on Sunday, 26 June. Any Fordivas & Dudes interested in volunteering for any of the above events, or just in joining the group or suggesting fund-raising ideas, should contact Nicola Gregory ([email protected]) or Joanne Barton ([email protected]). The team at the Ford customer relationship centre in Daventry turned to pedal power during a fund-raising event in May, which helped to raise over £130 for the type 1 diabetes charity JDRF. Six teams of five entered a cycle race, with each team member taking turns to pedal an exercise bike as far as possible in five minutes. Each team paid £5 to take part, and the winners – Penny Boswell and crew – clocked up a total of 15.7 kilometres. During the fund-raising day, the CRC team organised a cake sale and, in line with their chosen charity, also had a ‘guess the number of injections’ competition, in which people paid to estimate the total number of insulin injections which one of the managers’ sons had given himself in the 16 years he had been diagnosed as a diabetic (which was 23,360). “Our JDRF fund-raising day was a fantastic team effort,” said Jo Church from the CRC social committee, which organised the event. Hair today... gone tomorrow, but Joanne raises £1,130 for charity When a colleague in the machine shop at Dunton challenged toolmaker Joanne Shorer to shave her head, she said she would only do it if he could raise £100 for charity. Unfortunately for Joanne, he managed to rake in the money in just half an hour and so she entered the hairdressing room at Dunton to go through with the deed. But the sacrifice of her hair has paid off, as she has (at the time of writing) raised £1,130 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Joanne said: “I was a bit nervous before having it cut off, as I’ve always had shoulder-length hair and have never done anything like this before, and my other half wasn’t too happy about me having it done, either. “But it only took about 30 minutes with clippers. It’s been unusual to come to terms with since. I have had to wear a hat because it’s cold without one, although my hair has grown back quite a lot in a week. I’ve had a good positive reaction to the new look from my work colleagues. “Although it started as a dare, I decided to donate all funds raised to Macmillan Cancer Support as I have lost friends to cancer over the years and it is one of Ford’s supported charities. So far, we have raised more than £1,000. I at first said £100, then £500, then £1,000, because we were raising so much money from these donations.” If you would like to donate to Joanne’s cause, you can do at www.justgiving. com/Joanne-Shorer Left: Dunton hairdresser Kim Turner starts Joanne’s drastic haircut Above: the finished result Ford News June 2016 11 All-new Edge attract Ford’s all-new Edge SUV has attracted nearly 60,000 configurations via www.ford.co.uk. And the UK’s media has given positive feedback More than 60,000 Ford Edge SUVs have been configured on www.ford.co.uk in the first four months of 2016, as right-handdrive models roll off the production line for the first time. The all-new upscale Edge arrives in dealerships this summer. Ford data shows the flagship Sport model as the most popular choice, making up 49 per cent of the configurations. Over 55 per cent specified the 210PS 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine with Powershift transmission and the most popular colours are Oxford White (16 per cent), Shadow Black (14 per cent) and Electric Spice (8 per cent). Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, Andy Barratt, said: “The UK team and our extensive Ford dealer network are very excited by this exceptionally fast start for the new Ford Edge. With our existing EcoSport and Kuga SUV models enjoying healthy sales growth, there isn’t a better time to launch our new flagship Edge SUV.” Available in Zetec, Titanium and Sport series – and with a choice of 180PS 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission, or 210PS bi-turbo 2.0litre TDCi diesel with six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission – the all-new Edge is well-equipped as standard, offering Ford intelligent all-wheel drive, Active Noise Control, Pedestrian Detection, Ford DAB Audio with SYNC connectivity, privacy glass and 19in alloy wheels. Other innovative features available include Adaptive Steering, which automatically optimises the steering response according to vehicle speed, making it easy to manoeuvre at low speeds, while remaining precise and intuitive at higher speeds; and Front Wide View Camera, which makes restricted visibility junctions or parking spaces easier to negotiate. Media reaction UK motoring and lifestyle journalists have had the chance to drive the all-new Edge on a mix of German roads around Munich. This is what some of them have said: WhatCar? Online: Comfort and refinement are where the Edge betters its rivals. Carmagazine.co.uk: The Edge is an impressive family car and a lot of SUV for the money Honestjohn.co.uk: The Ford Edge is the quietest large SUV around and feels like a luxury saloon on the motorway with near-silence at a 70mph cruise Just-auto.com: Certainly worth its price Ford SYNC 2 with voice control enables drivers to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using simple conversational language. Even the space around the spare wheel has been utilised. ts praise and interest The all-new Ford Edge cuts a bold, sporty and imposing figure on European roads. Wheels pushed out to each corner give a wide, aggressive stance and help maximise interior space. Raised ground clearance enhances off-road capability, and delivers a seating position almost 50 mm higher than the Ford S-MAX, for a commanding view of the road Delivering premium levels of interior comfort The all-new Ford Edge SUV delivers premium levels of comfort, sophisticated driver assistance features and class-leading driving. It sets new standards in its class for interior space, features high quality materials throughout the interior and offers comfort and convenience features including heated and cooled front seats and a panoramic roof. Powerful and fuel efficient diesel engines that deliver 48.7 mpg, 149 g/km CO2 and up to 210 PS make owning a large, upscale SUV more affordable than ever. High-quality materials and cutting-edge design mean the interior conveys a premium impression. Functional components such as door handles, steering wheel controls, air-vents and cup holders are framed with a satin metal-finish, with a stylish piano black finish for the centre console. Soft, tactile materials are used for components occupants routinely handle. High quality leather covers the arm rests, steering wheel, and gear knob. Luxurious seating options include front and rear heated leather seats and cooled front seats. A heated steering wheel and heated front windscreen help drivers to get moving faster on cold mornings. Edge has an expansive panoramic glass roof, with two large glass panels; the front panel slides rearward to create an opening three times the size of a conventional sunroof. Rear seat passenger comfort is enhanced with class-leading second-row head room of 1023 mm and shoulder room of 1536 mm – greater than larger competitors including the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg. Front row passenger space is also among the best in class. Ford News June 2016 13 Paul Watkins and Wayne Hallett pose in front of the time-line they created Bridgend’s journey through time You can now travel through time at Bridgend – a time-line gallery contains important dates in the history of Ford and its vehicles and also chronicles the creation of BEP. Wayne Hallett and Paul Watkins, who have worked at the plant since 1989, pooled their skills to research, print and publish the information as well as get the laminated boards made for the gallery. It now occupies one wall linking the employees’ main entrance with the factory floor. Wayne said: “When the suggestion for the time-line was put forward we wanted it to show the story and main models in Ford’s history at one level, with the developments at Bridgend running along as well. “We used our own resources and some outside help to get the panels created and and they have become a talking point.” Colleague Paul added: “We have laid out the gallery in such a way so important events each month are covered and these will change every year. “What has been fascinating is that we have a low turnover rate of staff so a number of the employees have been here from the start and recognise themselves or former colleagues in the photographs we have included so they stop to check every so often.” Wayne concluded: “Sections along the gallery will highlight the rewards and recognition of employees who have contributed to the success of the engine plant over the years.” Ford apprenticeship opportunities announced There are a number of apprenticeship opportunities being offered by Ford this year – these are a great way to start an exciting career and offer a way to ‘earn while you learn’. The Company is offering both advanced apprenticeships and IT degree apprenticeships based in Essex to applicants regardless of race, gender and ethnicity. The advanced apprentices will spend the first 18 months of the four-year course at CEME, the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence at Dagenham, before going into plant at Dunton or Dagenham. Opportunities in a number of trades including mechanical, electrical, prototype vehicle fitter, and ‘trim and final’ are being offered. They will all work towards an NVQ level 3 qualification. The four-year IT degree apprentice course leads to a BSc honours degree in digital and technology solutions, studying on day release at University of Greenwich Medway campus. The youngsters aged 9 to 11 build their own electric cars, which take part in a series of technical challenges in the Greenpower final at Dunton each year. The overall winning team was car number 14 from Lee Chapel Primary School in Basildon, while eight more individual awards were handed out, for everything from ‘Spirit of Greenpower’ to ‘Greenest Bodywork’. Nicola Gregory, Dunton’s project specialist in the community outreach department, who has been organising the event since the first one six years ago, said: “The sun was shining, it was a great atmosphere and everyone was in good spirits. “There was a good turnout of female youngsters participating in this year’s event and the volunteer support through the day was fantastic, they showed great team morale.” A team of Dunton volunteers helped the day go smoothly and made sure the 18 teams of youngsters enjoyed the final Duck in distress gets helping hand at Bridgend Plant protection officer Stewart Webster was unflappable when he saw a duck in distress outside the main entrance to Bridgend engine plant. The entrance is adjacent to Ogmore River and he saw a duck and some ducklings gathering around a drain cover on the access road and suddenly one of them fell through the grating. “I ran over and the duck was making a noise but when I get there I had no means to lift the heavy grating,” said Stewart. Fortunately, colleague Will Davies was close and helped raise the grating. Instead of one duckling, the duck-rescue duo were confronted with five ducklings in the bottom of the drain and in danger of disappearing, so they lay down and reached into the culvert to pick them out one by one. Line worker Chris Blackmore was on hand to record the rescue on his mobile phone. “We had no idea so many had fallen into the drain but that was why the ducks’ mother was making such a noise and staying around the grating,” said Stewart. After the ducklings were rescued, Stewart and Will replaced the grating and put a traffic cone over it to stop any more accidents with the wandering web-footed family. Stewart has been nicknamed ‘the duck whisperer’ by his colleagues and could be in line for an RSPCA award. A total of £500 was handed out to six recipients, who put forward a number of charities and local causes as deserving of receiving the money. The DEP nominators who lobbied for their cause were: Pat Aherne, £100 for Tyler’s Fundraising Committee (TFC) TFC is hosting a fun day in aid of five-yearold Tyler, who is undergoing treatment for brain and spinal tumours. Busy bakers at TOps A cake sale at Dagenham organised by Ford Transport Operations raised £390 for Evelina Children’s Hospital (ECH) in St Thomas’s Hospital, London. Senior employee relations officer Natalie Terrell, plus TOps employees Stephanie Caves and Victoria Watts were also planning to abseil down the side of the hospital building in May to raise more money for the ECH. For the cake sale, the HR team in G Building and the TOps management team all baked their best cakes and two of the fundraising team from ECH came along to sell cakes, as well as celebrate the launch of a new car transporter which is decorated with the hospital’s logo and colours. They took part in the first Billericay soapbox derby on the first bank holiday in May, “and it was great fun, with a really good atmosphere,” said Mark, whose ‘Soapicorn’ kart was based loosely on Ken Block’s ‘Hoonicorn’ Mustang racer, survived both downhill runs. Mark and a friend spent six Saturdays building the kart, pictured left, which was complete with suspension and hydraulic disc brakes off a mini-motorbike. The team, who raised more than £200 for Little Havens Hospice, have got the racing bug now and will definitely enter again next year, said Mark. Craig had a different idea for his ideal kart: “I entered with a couple of friends and made minor modifications to a mobility scooter, including adding the all-important basket and flowers,” said Craig, whose efforts raised more than £400 for charities including Little Havens and Medecins san Frontieres. The mobility scooter, driven by Craig in wig and fetching nightdress, drew plenty of applause – and managed to survive becoming airborne over a jump. FCSD scheme to let customers buy approved parts from eBay Customers in the UK will be able to purchase spare parts directly from Ford-approved eBay stores thanks to a new initiative which has been launched by Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD). With support from the Daventry parts distribution centre – which has introduced new operations to deal with the eBay orders – customers can choose from over 15,000 different part lines for their Ford vehicles. Each new eBay store will be owned by a dealer group, with Ford providing the content and images for the parts listings, and shipping the parts directly from Daventry to the customer. For the pilot programme, the first store – which has been established with the Bristol Street Motors group – went live at the end of April, and is already generating hundreds of incremental orders per month, with sales so far growing exponentially. Further stores are scheduled to open over the next year, and it is estimated the eBay programme will create significant additional sales of Ford parts from Daventry. “We have created the framework for our dealers to offer high-quality eBay stores, with a consistent look and feel, and populated with Ford-approved content,” said FCSD business development manager Brian Gordon. “The result will be a better service for owners of Ford vehicles, and an important new resource for our dealers.” “The stores will offer a huge range of parts – even less common components for older models – and Ford is unique among manufacturers in offering this enormous choice of items, dispatched directly from our central warehouse,” he added. The Daventry team has been involved with the development of the initiative, to ensure that processes are in place to handle Parts ordered on eBay arrive at the packing area, ready for shipping customer eBay orders quickly and efficiently. IT systems are carefully designed so that eBay orders arrive in the warehouse in the same way as the standard parts orders from Ford dealers, so that the items can be picked and consolidated in the usual way within the warehouse. A new team has been established, however, to pack and ship the eBay parts, working in a special packing area. Orders received by 11am are dispatched directly to the customer on the same day, with smaller items being sent by Royal Mail, and bulkier items using a courier service. “This initiative allows Ford owners to source the spare parts they want – even just single small items – directly from the warehouse,” said Daventry parts distribution centre manager Andrew Blaber. “The Daventry team has worked hard to ensure that each eBay order is dispatched on time, with the high level of quality and attention to detail expected by our online customers.” Ford News June 2016 17 A marathon effort fro The London Marathon was held in April, with almost 40,000 runners tackling the 26-mile course. These Ford people were among them... LEE WALL AND ANDY DENNETT Dunton colleagues Lee Wall and Andy Dennett both took part in the marathon, raising £1,600 between them for good causes. Lee went round in an impressive time of three hours, 45 minutes and 29 seconds, completing his third London Marathon in the process. He raised £700 for Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) UK, a charity which supports families who have children of all ages with the condition – which includes symptoms such as mild to moderate intellectual disability, delayed speech and language skills, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances, and behavioural problems. Meanwhile, colleague Andy – both he and Lee are cost estimators at Dunton – finished his second London Marathon in three hours, 42 minutes and 22 seconds; nearly half an hour quicker than his previous effort in 2010. Andy raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society in honour of his father, who was diagnosed with the illness. In total, he collected £772, which rises to £900 with gift aid. Lee raised £700 for the Smith-Magenis Syndrome charity Dagenham golfers tee-up £800 for charity More than £800 was raised for charity PORT by 40 golfers from the Dagenham estate at a golf day organised by Kevin Greene, a production team manager at Dagenham Diesel Centre (DDC). Kevin said: “We had a restricted number of 40 attending because of tee times, and the players were all of different abilities with lots of interesting handicaps. We had 10 teams competing. “The weather was great and Top Meadow Golf Club in North Ockendon reduced the green fees, so we could donate more to PORT, a charity for chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction.” Around £842 was raised on the day, with more promised in pledges online. Dagenham Engine Plant manager Paul Neighbour presented prizes to winners of the longest drive, nearest the pin and the winning team, made up of senior engineer Darren Wetherald, forward planning engineer Liam Walsh and Glen Daniels and Dave Freeman, both of Krause UK. 18 Ford News June 2016 Dagenham golfers raised more than £800 for the charity PORT om Ford fund-raisers LEE GRIFFITHS OWEN STYLES Owen Styles, a senior quality and reliability engineer in Powertrain Development at Dunton, completed the London Marathon in four hours, 30 minutes and 35 seconds. Owen said: “I ran on behalf of Link Radio Trust, a small charity based in Hadleigh that broadcasts tailored radio shows to sheltered accommodations and nursing homes in the local area. “The charity is solely funded by sponsored events such as the marathon. “This year, I raised slightly more than £2,000 for them through the marathon and other activities.” Bridgend Engine Plant’s marathon man Lee Griffiths has raised more than £1,700 for disabled children and young people. The senior manufacturing engineer ran the London event this year for Get Kids Going, which helps those up to 26 years to get into sport. The charity finances special wheelchairs for them to tackle athletics events, ball games, fencing and even skiing. The charity also provides grants to assist with travelling and training costs as well as entry fees. Lee said: “There are hundreds of disabled talented youngsters who have the potential to compete at all levels but receive either none or very little funding and I want to give them a chance at becoming champions in their chosen sport.” He ran for the same charity before and also for the national deaf blind charity Sense. “I am so grateful for the support shown by my Bridgend colleagues and hope to get around and thank them all in due course,” Lee added. He completed the course this year in 4hr 11m 8s. He ran in memory of his twin brother Mark, who also worked at Dunton, who died in the hospice in 1995. “The care they gave was amazing and is never forgotten,” said Martin. He told his supporters before the race: “It would be great to raise as much as I can to help others in the future. We know of the amazing work and invaluable service that the hospice does so every donation, will help. www.justgiving.com/ Martin-England-52 Is Ekua a Wimbledon champion in waiting? Ekua Youri may only be 11, but she has achieved a great deal in the eight years she has been playing tennis – and has her sights set on becoming world number one. But there are challenges to raising a sporting protégé, as dad Robert, who works in engine engineering at Dagenham Diesel Centre, explained: “Ekua plays in tournaments almost every weekend all over the country. I drive her to these tournaments and support her while she plays. “It can be very tough for both of us, but then any father would do the same. I feel for her sometimes as I watch her play, but am often reassured by her love and dedication. “Tennis is a very expensive sport, we spend a lot on travel to get her to training and tournaments, as well as her coaching, equipment and fitness training. As her parents, we support her as much as we can to nurture her promising talent but it is becoming increasingly difficult financially. “I have no doubt that she is something special and will go a long way, but then, I’m biased. I’m also a very proud dad!” At the end of April, Ekua won a gold medal in an under-14s competition and then gold in an under-12s event the next day. Ekua said: “I love playing tennis more than anything. I spend a lot of time training and playing in tournaments around the country. I have won many tournaments and, one day, I will be world number one.” Robert added: “She has gone on to win numerous trophies, which has led her to be entered into the Europe Tennis ‘Nike Junior International Tour’, taking place in June.” Ekua now needs help in raising £4,000 so she can take part in the tour, and also for one-to-one coaching sessions and kit. The UK’s best-selling car, the Ford Fiesta, won Most Popular Small Hatchback; the dynamic Ford S-MAX collected Most Popular MPV and the iconic Ford Mustang was declared the Most Popular Convertible. Dan Harrison, editor of honestjohn.co.uk, said: “As an all-rounder the Ford Fiesta is a hard one to beat, proving equally at home on the motorway as it is around town. “Our users also tell us they’re impressed by the Fiesta’s turbocharged EcoBoost engines, which deliver eager performance.” He added: “The Ford Mustang may be a truly iconic model, yet it has remained elusive for British drivers. So Ford’s decision to finally officially sell it here was met with huge interest and enthusiasm. “It came as no surprise to us that our audience were keen to read about the new Mustang. Given its affordable price tag, it represents a lot of car for the money, yet is always guaranteed to get attention.” The honestjohn.co.uk awards are uniquely judged by their website users. The awards recognise and reward the cars and vans that HonestJohn users search for most on the site. Ford also scored in the DieselCar Magazine Top 50 awards, with Focus Best Medium Car and Best Hot Hatch, Fiesta Best Small Car and S-MAX Best Large MPV. Ford commissioned a survey of 5,000 people across Europe to better understand the SUV boom. Nearly one in three mums with children still at home are thinking of buying an SUV, as are one in four of 17- to 34-year-olds, and one in five of today’s generation of active 50-somethings. “SUVs have grown from a tiny niche in Europe to one of the most significant automotive trends of the past decade,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “Every time someone predicts SUV sales will cool down, they are proven wrong. That’s because SUVs have widespread appeal with men and woman, young and older people.” The survey highlighted that perceptions of SUVs have changed dramatically. Of those surveyed, 82 per cent say that SUVs are no longer just a luxury vehicle, and have become more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly over the past five years. Nearly all recognise that SUVs are now available in a wide variety of sizes and options. £20 crossword Quick across Cryptic across 1. 4. 9. 10. 11. 12. 14. 18. 19. 21. 1. 4. 9 22. 23.
