Grade 5/6 CLASS NEWS
Students in Grade 5/6 have worked hard this term to create a positive learning environment, to support
each other as learners and to challenge themselves to be the best students they can be. I have been
impressed with every one of my students, and am proud of their achievements - as they should also be.
Students have brushed up on their basic maths and English skills, including timetables facts and basic
grammar, and applied these in problem solving, essays and research projects. They won awards in art at
the Foster Show and competed with sportsmanship at the Corner Inlet Sports. The students are
beginning to prepare themselves for secondary school challenges, including completing homework tasks,
using new technologies to create short movies, doing research with references, preparing presentations,
giving speeches and participating in debates.
COMING UP:
The students helped out their junior school buddies,

I have been particularly impressed by students who

Working with Clay
2, 3, 4 CLASS NEWS
On Monday 16th March, Mrs Banikos and Mrs Ardley came to Toora Primary School to help
some of our students create clay artworks for the Great Southern Portrait Competition.
These teachers are from Prom Coast Arts, which is a volunteer community arts organisation.
The finished artworks will exhibited as part of the Great Southern Portrait Prize at Stockyard Gallery,
Foster. This exhibition will be open on the 15th April, until the 11th May. Students will get
their clay
artworks back after the 12th May. The announcement of awards will be at 2.30pm on
Sunday 26th April (during the Seachange Festival).
My name is Chelsea, and I was chosen to be in a clay art session. I was
the only person who was doing a sculpture of Mrs Gilbertson with a
little bush. I am going to give mine to my teacher.

I had fun at the Clay workshop, I made a picture of Eli, my little baby
brother, I though it was tough, because I kept of mucking up, but I
kept trying until I got it! By Aaron
My clay piece is of Michael. For his hair, I didn’t want it on the side, or
on the top, so I decided to put it on the face. I created his scars with a
toothpick and then I added the finishing touches to it.
By Erin
At the clay art class, it was amazing. Student’s from the 2/3/4 class and grade
5/6’s. We made clay faces, I made one of myself.

On Monday, I worked with brown clay to make a portrait of a face. We had to
sketch a person’s face, and I chose Cooper. I found it hard because you had to
scratch lines through the clay, as well as wet it to make the features stick to
the base. It took me an hour and a half to create Cooper’s face out of a blank
square base. I got to use the garlic crusher to make the hair. When we finished the ladies gave us free time! By Reghan
At the clay workshop I made a picture of my granddad, a snowman and a Yugi-oh card. I thought it was fun. By Django
At the clay lesson, we had to make a face of someone who lives in Australia. It
was fun. When we finish, they are going to be put into a hot oven, so they get
hard. I am going to sell mine.
By Charli
I was chosen to participate in the Clay Workshop on Monday afternoon. We
had to make a sculpture of a person and I made a face. You had a choice to
sell your art for a good price, or you could choose to keep it. I chose to keep
mine. There were only twenty people from our school allowed to do the
workshop. I think mine could win!
By Jodie
Students from Grade 2,3,4 will be travelling to Fish Creek on Thursday 16th
April (first week of Term 2) to participate in a workshop with renowned
children's author Alison Lester. Permission forms went home to families
yesterday.

Student Welfare at Toora Primary School
27/3/15
Dear Parents,
As many of you will have heard, late in 2014 Toora PS was successful in gaining
funding through the Commonwealth Government’s National School Chaplaincy
Program (NSCP). The aim of the NSCP is to support the emotional wellbeing of
students by providing pastoral care services and strategies that support the
emotional wellbeing of the whole school community.
I am delighted to announce that through this funding Toora Primary School has
secured the services of Gary Wentworth to fulfil this welfare role within the school.
Gary comes to us from a similar welfare role at Bayles Primary School where he was a
popular and valued member of the school community. Gary will be available on
Tuesday and Wednesday each week to speak to students, staff, parents and the wider
community. Throughout Term 2 Gary will also be in attendance at other times to
ensure Toora PS receives the required number of days over the course of the year.
One of these days will be Monday 13th April, the first day of Term 2. Please take the
time to introduce yourself and make Gary feel welcome as part of the Toora PS team.
Please read and sign the attached Consent Form which contains further details on the
program, and if required contact me for further information.
Thankyou
David Tyler
