THE PARADOX OF HOLIDAY JOY
Syosset-based psychologist Dr. Andrea Gould
shares her thoughts about dealing with holiday
expectations and disappointments.
We come upon it honestly-the expectation of joyous holidays! The image and story that
fill our minds since grade
school days: countdowns to
vacation, dreams of sugar
plum fairies, families with kind
words, and delicious food and festivities. These
visions have been installed—mostly subconsciously—and consistently reinforced by media messages
and consumer advertising. Our holy days are sitting
ducks for expectations to sneak out of our unconscious minds and wreak havoc with our current
reality. The higher and more specifically detailed the
expectations, the steeper the potential disappointments.
Your best defense against being overtaken by holiday disappointment is to take stock of what you
expect, what you wish, what you need and what
you desire. Discernment is paramount here. If we
can shine a light on what we are expecting of ourselves and others, we can modify and lighten up
the unwanted cloud of depression that can often
get in the way of holiday joy!
Keep your plans as simple as possible and focus
largely on the heart of the matter. When in doubt,
remember that grace and gratitude are mindsets
that mediate negativity and increase the contentment quotient for your holiday season. And needless to say, the less stress you accumulate during
this season, the less of an exhausted (physically
and financially) backlash you’ll experience in
January!

TOYS OF HOPE
How long have you lived on Long Island and what do you
like best about it?
I grew up in New York City and have lived on Long Island
since 1978. I love the proximity to beaches and to New York
City.
You just ran your first half marathon. That’s a terrific accomplishment, especially for someone who is 58.
When I decided to run the inaugural Diva Half Marathon in
October, I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I joined a group
called the Runner’s Edge Divas. During our 12-week training
course, we learned about nutrition, avoiding injuries, building
mileage, and how to prepare for long runs. As the mileage
increased, so did the friendships, bonds and support among
the women in the group, and we plan to run many more races
to benefit charitable causes.
You’re also an avid skier and you recently became a certified
personal trainer.
I started skiing back in 1978, and my daughter first learned
how to ski when she was six. I love being outdoors, even in the
cooler temperatures. I own a timeshare in Shawnee, PA, and
have served on their Board of Directors since 2003. Because of
my interest in running and exercise, I took a personal trainer
course and a certification exam through Hofstra University. I
plan to use my skills and experience to volunteer at not-forprofit organizations.
You’ve worked for some interesting organizations.
I used to work as Operations Manager for the Information
Technology Department at the American Museum of Natural
History, where employees were given the opportunity to view
the exhibits and IMAX offerings before they were opened to
the public. I am currently Director of Finance and
Administration at Hofstra University Continuing Education. I
enjoy working on this beautiful campus and being a part of the
vibrant Hofstra Community.
Toys of Hope, a Huntington-based non-profit
organization dedicated to providing brandnew clothes, toys, household items, toiletries
and other items to needy and homeless children and their families throughout Long
Island, is in need of donations this holiday
season. Because the organization is all-volunteer, 100% of donations are used to directly
help children. The guiding principal behind
the Toys of Hope mission is that all children,
regardless of financial status, race, religion or
nationality, are deserving of those things
which can help give them a happier and
more fulfilling life. Toys of Hope also provides
essential items to needy families so that they
can become more self sufficient and, in turn,
help to improve their childrens’ lives. To

ple, packs 15 grams of fat and nearly 200 calories.) Fill three-quarters of your
plate with chopped fresh vegetables and fruit, reserving the remaining quarter for anything you want, whether or not it's low in fat. If you're at a buffet
dinner, serve yourself healthy foods–salads, grain dishes and vegetables that
aren't covered in cream. Don't feel obligated to eat whatever you take–ditto
with dessert. And whatever you do, sit down to savor each and every bite.
“What you don't want to do is fill up your plate with a drink in your hand,
then starting chatting,” says Spangle. “Before you know it, you'll have an
empty plate and barely a memory of having eaten.” To reduce the risk of
unconscious consumption, she recommends mingling without food. Once
you've said your hellos, then go ahead and slowly dig in to your allotted portion. And think twice before you go back for more.
Every Second Counts
Speaking of seconds, if you're eating a traditional high-fat holiday meal,
keep in mind that another helping of mashed potatoes (110 calories), a slice
of turkey breast (120) and a narrow sliver of pecan pie (215) doesn't seem
like much. But do the math and you'll discover that “just a little more” can
easily add up to more than 440 calories and about 14 grams of fat. So if
you're not the one preparing the meal (and making sure it's low-fat), make
your first plateful of holiday dinner your last. A temptation tamer: Take a 20minute intermission before reaching for seconds to give the urge to refill your
plate an opportunity to pass. During that time, have a cup of tea, or hang out
in the living room away from the buffet. Afterward, if you're still hungry, opt
for another serving of steamed vegetables or a salad.

Research shows that eating while listening to fast, loud music may cause
you to consume more food. It takes your brain about 10 minutes to register
satiety. But the faster the musical beat, the more quickly you'll eat, which
means you may have already gone back for seconds before your brain tells
you that your stomach's full. On the other hand, soft background music has
a calming effect and may foster one of the qualities of a great party–interesting conversation. When dining at home over the holidays, put slow and
soothing tunes on the CD player.
Exercise Every Day
Throughout the holiday season, squeeze in exercise every day, even if
you swear you're too busy. Exercise quells your stress level, boosts metabolism and provides a feeling of well-being that can fuel your resolve to eat
healthy during the holidays. “When you exercise consistently, you're less
likely to say, 'Oh, forget about it. I'm just going to pig-out tonight,'”
Spangle says.◆

ABOUT THE CHARITY
Marotta Facial Plastic Surgery helps support The Damien House Foundation, a
charitable hospital and clinic in Guayaquil, Ecuador that transforms the lives of
patients with Hansen’s Disease (leprosy). Hansen's Disease is a mild but persistent
infectious disease caused by bacteria that enter the body by aerosol droplets and
cause symptoms including nerve damage, lumps and/or ulcers on
the skin, selective muscle paralysis, and blindness. Although rare in
developed countries such as the US, the disease is prevalent in
impoverished areas of Asia, Africa, and South America. According
to Dr. Julie Gerberding, the director of the United States Center for
Disease Control, "leprosy could be eradicated worldwide, if that
goal were to be set." The disease is completely curable. After only two weeks on
antibiotics, Hansen’s patients are no longer contagious. Full treatment to cure the
disease takes anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the individual's
immune system and the severity of disease present.
All money donated by Marotta Facial Plastic Surgery to The Damien House
Foundation will be directly applied to providing medications & treatment to
Hansen’s patients at the Damien House hospital and clinic.

BONE DENSITY TESTING FOR MEN & WOMEN
The first step towards the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia
After the age of 35, both men and women begin to lose bone mass unless they take action to prevent it. Early intervention
can prevent future problems since bone health is crucial to our overall health and well-being.
The absolute amount of bone as measured by bone mineral density (BMD) testing generally correlates with bone strength
and its ability to bear weight. By measuring BMD, it is possible to predict fracture risk in the same manner that measuring
blood pressure can help predict the risk of a stroke.
The World Health Organization has developed definitions for low bone mass (osteopenia) and osteoporosis. Determining
Richard Linchitz, MD a person's BMD helps our doctors decide if a person is at increased risk for osteoporosis-related fracture. Osteoporosis is
not only treatable, it is also preventable. By the time we begin to think about our bone health, we may already have
suffered serious damage.
At Linchitz Medical Wellness, our mission is to help our patients achieve and maintain bone health by emphasizing natural
treatment and the prevention of illness. Strong and healthy bones are a cornerstone to successful aging.

OSTEOPOROSIS: Largely Preventable

Patti
LuPone
From Northport
to a Nervous
Breakdown
by A. Nadboy
When it comes to modern day leading ladies of Broadway, Patti
LuPone is in a class by herself. She’s taken ownership of many classic leading roles with unforgettable performances including Evita,
Gypsy and Sweeney Todd. She’s currently appearing in the theatrical
adaptation of Pedro Almadover’s Women on the Verge of Nervous
Breakdown at the Belasco Theater.
Her career experiences on Broadway, tv and film are delightfully
detailed in her recent memoir, Patti LuPone: A Memoir (Crown
Archtype), where she also shares some nostalgic memories of her
formative years growing up in Northport.
As you’ll read in this interview, Ms. LuPone is infectiously enthusiastic about her work and eager to share some of the lessons she’s
learned from her life and career. She has a wonderful sense of humor
that is often peppered with hearty laughter. At the same time, she is
an artist who takes her craft very seriously.
Long Island Woman: How are things going with the new show (Women on the Verge
of a Nervous Breakdown)?
Patti LuPone: I love this musical so much. I love the material. I have this incredible
emotional reaction to it. I’m so happy to be involved with it and I’m so happy to be
involved in the creative process. So, here’s hoping it’s a hit. And if its not, at least
doing this with (director) Bart Sher and his creative team has been incredible.
This seems to be a very busy time in your career, you just released your memoir –
the new show... At this point in your career shouldn’t you be slowing down a little?
At this point in my career shouldn’t I be begging for work?! I don’t know what’s
going on… I’m just grateful to God that it’s happening. It’s not a matter of slowing
down; it’s a matter of no lack of work. Something happened as I got older, where the
most interesting things started to come in. I’m kind of flabbergasted myself that I’m
still vital at 51 years old.
Many women your age on stage and screen seem to have a tough time getting good
roles.
I think one of the reasons I’m doing fine is because I generated my own work, which
is the concert stuff. So in those dry periods I can still generate money because I have
the concerts to fall back on. I’ve been doing that since Evita.
I never left the stage. Yes, I am older and I certainly am not going to be playing leading ladies much longer. But I wasn’t irrelevant at an early age because I chose to focus
my career on the stage. I’m just grateful that I’m busy.
The book is a career retrospective with not as much focus on your personal life. You
come across as a very open person but at the same time it seemed like you wanted to
protect your privacy.
The experiences that I’ve had in the theater are pretty juicy, so there’s no reason to
guild the lily. I don’t need to talk about my personal life, which is pretty boring compared to what I’ve experienced on-stage. I’m truly a homebody and a mother and a
wife. And on my day off – I’ll go home, I’ll cook dinner, I’ll do the laundry, I’ll hang out
with my husband, maybe we’ll watch some TV and the next day I’m back at work
again.
What happens in the theater is so much more dramatic then what happens in my
personal life. And whatever was dramatic in my personal life shouldn’t take precedence over the lessons that I’ve learned as an actor. I think some of the stuff that I
have to say can help acting students. I think my experiences are unique because of
my experiences at Julliard and the Acting Company and the chance I was given to
train as an actor. It all happened around the stage.
The book offers insight into the path you took to get where you are now. Most people don’t understand what it actually took to get to the point you’re at now and it was
actually quite fascinating.
No, I don’t think people know. I’m inundated with reality TV stars and I just want to
smack them upside the head. It’s cheapening an entertainment medium. We look like
we’re such a trashy nation because the only things people want to see are catfights
between the girls on Jersey Shore, or the Housewives of New Jersey or Paris Hilton
and Lindsay Lohan getting arrested. That’s become our excitement.
And it has nothing to do with talent..
No, it has nothing to do with talent… or even a decent life! Even a noble instinct.
My husband and I were flipping around the channels and we came upon the old tv
show, The Goldbergs. As I was watching it I was going, “this is what people got to see
on TV.” It was like watching Kraft Theater or Playhouse 90. And the acting was so good
and the stories were so good. And I was so engrossed. This is what people got to see
on TV. So how did we get here? Where have we come?
Its more important for me to instill in any acting student interested in this, what it
takes and how proud one must be to be a working actor and the discipline and the
sacrifices you have to make.
You wrote about being a good multi-tasker and juggling a number of roles at the
same time. Does that transfer to your personal life as well?
Oh yeah. What I learned in acting has affected all parts of my daily living. My mind
was trained to multi-task with the Acting Company. It taught the mind to focus.
You’re very candid about some of the people you liked and disliked throughout your
career. You particularly didn’t like working with Paul Sorvino, Topol and Bill
Smitrovich. Did it feel cathartic getting that off your chest and did you have any concerns about putting in the book?
Paul Sorvino, Topol and Bill Smitrovich were kind of impossible. So it doesn’t necessarily feel good to get if off my chest because I’ve said it forever. It’s not a deep dark
secret. Topol was just an asshole over and out.
Andrew Lloyd Weber was a big disappointment to you.
It wasn’t that he was disappointing himself,
because he’s a bit of an oddball, but his actions
were not something that you’d think a man
in his position with his money would stoop
to. I never had a deep connection with him
when I did Evita and I didn’t have a terribly
deep connection with him when I did
Sunset Boulevard, because I don’t think you
can have a deep connection with him.
You wrote about finding out you had
breast cancer and then having to
go on-stage at Carnegie Hall and
managing to block it out for the
moment. That was very courageous and must have taken a
lot of strength or great acting ability.
It was neither. It was

Catching Up with Carol
by Carol Silva
You Know, I Made Her
This weekend my husband and I are taking our first
“Family Weekend” trip to the University of Maryland. Our
daughter is 18 – a college freshman. And I have Mommy
whiplash.
I walk past her room and it’s neat, clean, and organized.
No evidence it belongs to a teenager. No cookie wrappers
or stuffed animals littering the floor. No folded high
school notes that had been passed under the noses of
teachers who probably pretended not to notice because
even they didn’t want to slow her projectile rush through
the doors of high school and into a college dorm.
When we took her for college orientation – 2 days after high school graduation –
she walked into a meeting, crowded with other long haired, tank topped, shorts
wearing college students. She fit right in. You could barely pick her out. But I could
– a mile away. Because I’m “the Mother.”
When my kids do the things that make parents smile – score a goal, befriend a
friendless kid, help an older person through a door – I often beam, “I made her. I
made him.” I feel radiant. It’s those moments where life comes together. A priest
friend told me once, “Having a child is the one time God allows you to co-create
with Him. And then you get to name your creation.” So I take this “Mommy the creator” job pretty seriously. And I think I’ve gotten pretty good over the years.
Which brings me to September 14, 1992.
Our first wedding anniversary. Our daughter

whole new ballgame and I was no longer in charge of whether I slept, when I ate,
what I wore or how I looked. Big reality check.
So my husband had to leave that September morning for just a few hours. He
walked out the door. I dissolved into tears – 11AM – still in a robe – alone with that
gorgeous pink baby. My old roommate Wendy called, “Hi, how are you?” My broken tears answered. When she walked into my living room 4 minutes later she
asked, “What’s wrong?” “Nobody every told me it would be like this.” “Of course
they don’t because if they did, then no one would ever do it!” It was like that scene
from “Moonstruck” where Cher slaps someone and yells, “Snap out of it!”
That’s not everyone’s first 2 weeks, but it was mine – the beginning of an 18 year
journey through a new normal. Along the way I’ve found more love than I could ask
for, and a path to grow up even more than my kids have. For right now though, I’ve
got to put the last of the treats into this college care package, and load the car, so

My Turn
by Natalie June Reilly
Christmas Ex’s and Oh’s
Love is Never Really Lost
Love is a funny thing, isn’t it? It comes in all shapes and sizes; and
you just never know when or where you’re going to find it.
Sometimes you know exactly where to find it; sometimes it finds
you, grabbing a hold of your lapels and shaking some sense back
into your ever-hardening heart. And then there are times when you
find that love was right there where you left it – not lost, really – like
your car keys or the husband you divorced nine years ago, a man you
had one life and two beautiful children with.
It was Christmas day 2008 when I unexpectedly found love again.
Oh, it wasn’t the romantic kind of love that can go from inferno to
fizzle in 60 seconds; it was the old, familiar kind – the slow burn –
that can only happen between two people who once shared a life
together, the kind of love that can only happen between those same
two people who shared the experience of giving life to two beautiful children. That’s the kind of love I’m
talking about, and to be honest with you,
I didn’t even see it coming.
He was just walking me to my car – Billy,
that is, my ex-husband of nine years. I had
just dropped our two teenage boys, Billy
Boy and Alec, off at his house on
Christmas morning. It’s been our tradition
since the divorce. After powering down
breakfast and rifling through stockings at
my place, I pack up the car with my boys
and a couple of arm-loads worth of
Christmas booty and head over to their
dad’s house, never bothering to change
out of our pajamas.
It’s at his house that we exchange gifts
and pleasantries and then – after a bundle
of Christmas hugs and kisses from my kids
– I head back home with empty arms to
spend the rest of the day with my mother. Oh, I know; it’s not idyllic, but it’s as close as we can get, considering.
Over the past couple of years our little tradition has included the
new woman in Billy’s life, Lisa. And even though I like her and she is
good to my boys, it’s a little disarming to one’s emotions when you
find yourself having to share your family with another woman – and
on such a day as Christmas, too. But so is life when you’re a broken
family. You learn to deal with it. I suppose it was a little harder on
me this year after having just lost my job; I guess you could say that
I was already feeling a little emotional, seemingly alone and left out
in the cold as it was.
“Natalie, you know that I love you, right?” Billy whispered from out of
the blue as we ambled toward my Jeep. His eyes unexpectedly welled

up with tears as he – the consummate tough guy from Long Island –
stood barefoot on that cold sidewalk in December in his green flannel
pajamas, wearing his heart on his sleeve. “I will always love you.”
Apparently he was feeling a tad schmaltzy, too. I hadn’t heard the
words “I love you” fall from his lips in a long while and even though
I was completely touched by them, it was the tears in those sentimental green eyes of his that caught me off guard, those familiar
eyes that brought back so many wonderful Christmas memories.
“I know,” I whispered, my heart catching in my throat, as I, too,
stood outside in the early morning hours of that cold Christmas day
in my red, snowman pajamas and tears welling up in my own green
eyes. “I love you, too.”
It’s not quite the exchange one might come to expect between two
ex-spouses with an ocean’s worth of water under the bridge. But
before I knew it, we were locked in a long embrace, both of us
weeping uncontrollably. What is it about Christmas that brings people together, temporarily lowering their defenses, those protective
walls we build around our hearts?
It was as if – for just a moment – we were all alone, the two of us,
held together by the warmth of what was and what is now our family, either that or by the static-cling from our flannel pajamas. Who
could tell? In any case, we were encapsulated in a proverbial snowglobe moment and we were both a little shaken. Meanwhile, deep
down inside – in places I don’t like to talk about at parties – I knew
that Lisa and the boys were waiting inside for him; she would be making breakfast and Christmas memories all her own with my family –
my children. That’s not always an easy pill to swallow, even though I
know in my heart I wouldn’t change a thing – even if I could.
“We have two great kids together, Nat, and I wouldn’t have wanted to take this walk with anyone but you,” Billy breathed, giving me
that same sideways (deliberate) grin that both my boys give me
when they really mean something.
“Ditto,” I smiled back.
I reached up onto my tiptoes, my arms squeezing evermore tightly
around his neck, hot tears streaming down my cool cheeks and into
the thickness of his shoulder. His arms tightened around me, too.
And with all the love and sentimentality that Christmas brings with
it, as well as all of the love and sentimentality that balls up between
two people over the course of 18 years, Billy and I gave each other
a warm peck on the lips and wished each other a happy Christmas.
And it was then – as he tucked me into my car, shutting the door
behind me – that I realized that even though life has a way of breaking our hearts – and even breaking apart our families at times – love
is never really lost. In fact it can be found in some of the simplest of
places – many of them locked tight in those Christmas memories
both old and new. ◆

We all know that stress
is a killer. In fact,
research shows that
stress causes a chemical
reaction in the body that
is associated with increased heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes, and certain cancers! Not only
does stress destroy our health; it also
eventually destroys our relationships, life
enjoyment, productivity, and ability to
earn a living.
The good news is that stress can be
completely RESOLVED; and not just temporarily relieved or managed! Impossible
you say? Not quite. The truth is that
stress does not cause our problems; it’s
our inability to handle stress properly
that causes our bodies and lives to break
down! This stress accumulates in the
body and mind and can cause:
back/neck problems, headaches, stom-
ach/digestive, fatigue, skin, infections,
moodiness, ADD/ADHD, depression,
fears, and irritability; just to name a few.
So how does someone attain physical
and emotional health and happiness
even with stress? Here’s how:
We help people heal their bodies and
their lives by doing light pressure points
that blend advanced neurological, energy work, and life-skills coaching to literally RESOLVE all the stress, tension, distortions, and traumas from the body and
mind naturally. Our gentle methods help
people find peace and passion in their
lives while also powerfully helping them
to completely heal from all kinds of
chronic disorders. Live well!
