Come learn why dieting and willpower won’t work, and how to eat and lose weight at the same time. We will examine the biological reasons we crave high calorie foods, and the steps we can take to turn these cravings off. Culinary Kisses will demonstrate how to make tasty vegan soul and comfort foods the entire family will enjoy. MARCH 4TH 12PM - 1PM Gluten-Free Awareness Instructor: Dr. Akua Woolbright Dr. Akua will share her observations about gluten, and teach you how to make better choices. The Kitchen is a separate facility from the store, located directly on Woodward between Mack and Parson next door to the Bank of America. PARKING To avoid being ticketed or towed during class, please avoid parking in the store’s parking lot. Parking can be found on the street or directly behind the kitchen in the Wayne State University parking structure. WSU parking stubs will be validated. MARCH 11TH 12PM - 1PM Strength and Conditioning Instructor: Aaron Scott, Crossfit Benchmark Workouts & Team 83 Elite Athletics Participants will learn about body mechanics awareness, and how to increase their core strength, flexibility and mobility. *Bring a towel, wear comfortable shoes and clothes, and come prepared to EXERCISE! Instructor: Chef Robert Taylor, Whole Foods Market In this BEGINNERS’ class, students will learn very basic cooking techniques like how to dice vegetables, separate and scramble an egg, make an omelet, steam vegetables, and more. MARCH 13TH 11:30AM - 12:30PM & 1PM - 2PM Ask the Nutritionist Instructor: Dr. Akua Woolbright Bring your lunch and your nutrition questions, and meet Dr. Akua in the Store’s upstairs Community Room. Space limited to 15 guests for these small sessions with the nutritionist. MARCH 18TH 12PM - 1PM Nutrition Rainbow Instructor: Dr. Akua Woolbright Akua will discuss the nutritional benefits of building each meal around a rainbow of colorful plant-foods. Students will learn which nutrients are found in specific colors. Following the brief discussion, The Epicurean Group will show you some tricks for making quick and mouthwatering seafood dishes at home. Instructor: Gari Freeman, Whole Foods Market Learn more about nutrient-dense foods and how to add them to your daily diet. Gari will also teach us how to make delicious raw chocolates. MARCH 22ND 10AM - 11:30AM Decoding Food Labels Instructor: Dr. Akua Woolbright Participants will learn how to accurately read food labels and make wiser food choices. This class is interactive with participants reading labels and presenting their findings to the group (includes field trip to store for scavenger hunt). MARCH 24TH 12PM - 1PM & 6PM - 8PM Help! I Can’t Separate An Egg! Instructor: Whole Foods Market Detroit’s Bakery Team In this BEGINNERS’ baking class, participants will learn very basic techniques like how to separate an egg, as well as whip, beat, mix, and balance baking ingredients to make simple products like homemade cornbread, cookie and cake batters. You CAN try this at home! Meet Our Educator Akua Woolbright, PhD Community Health and Wellness Educator, Whole Foods Market Akua Woolbright is an expert in teaching people how to use plantbased foods to help prevent and reverse disease. Dr. Woolbright came to Detroit almost 2-years ago from the corporate offices of Whole Foods Market in Austin, TX where she helped to create Health Starts Here, the company’s healthy eating program. Akua conducts healthy eating classes for company executives and team members, customers, and community organizations. Prior to joining Whole Foods Market in 2009, Dr. Woolbright lived in Washington, D.C., where she received her PhD in nutritional science from Howard University and worked as a public health nutritionist in the areas of breastfeeding promotion, cancer prevention and survival, HIV/AIDS treatment, weight loss, asthma, and international childhood malnutrition.
