Mission Statement The St. James Center for Biblical Studies is dedicated to providing biblically sound training that leads one to discover Christ, to learn Christ, to grow in Christ, and to manifest Christ. Our desire is to prepare one for the work of the ministry, to assist one in fulfilling their calling, and to help one to live out the Gospel. Basic Curriculum 30 Hours- Certificate of Completion (All Core Classes required for Graduation) *Certificate of Participation will be issued the end of each semester All teachers are certified instructors for teaching the Word of God. Students enrolled in SJCBS will receive a Certificate of Completion and participate in SJCBS Graduation Ceremony after successfully completing all required core courses and electives from SJCBS. Dr. Leon McCowan I. Biblical Studies Survey of the Old Testament - 101 (Tuesdays) This course is designed to help the student to understand the Bible as a whole. The Bible is one book telling the story of Redemption, and that redemption is only through the Blood of Jesus Christ. Textbook: Survey of the Old Testament Instructor: Rev. Dr. B.W. McClendon How the Bible Came to Be- Course #103 – (Mondays) This course confirms that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. In this session the very Word of God will indeed validate itself. Exciting evidence uncovers the finds of some of history’s most fascinating discoveries, including the Dead Sea Scrolls. As we handle precious texts, examine Books and unearth biblical facts, each student's comfort level will grow weekly. There is power in the Word of God! Cheryl Gipson New Testament- Course #105- Summer/Winter Mini Session 2015 (Saturdays) The student will enhance their knowledge of the New Testament. The student will also participate in discussions, lectures and practical exercises in the form of article reviews. Textbooks: The Bible and Scholarly Commentary of Choice Instructor: Rev. Dr. Leon McCowan Study of Systematic Theology Course # 405 (Mondays) Systematic theology is a discipline of Christian theology that formulates an orderly, rational, and coherent account of the Christian faith and beliefs. Systematic theology draws on the foundational sacred texts of Christianity, while simultaneously investigating the development of Christian doctrine over the course of history, particularly through philosophy, science and ethics. Inherent to a system of theological thought is that a method is developed, one which can be applied both broadly and particularly. Textbook: TBA Instructor: Rev. Dr. Arthur Wright Christology Course # 401 (Wednesdays) This course shows how Jesus taught and how He can influence the way we teach. Arnetta White Effective Prayer- Course # 407 (Mondays) During this course, you will learn how to prepare yourself for effective participation in the highest calling Christ has given the church- to advance God’s Kingdom through prayer. Christian Worship Homiletics – Course # 201 (Mondays) In this course, you will find a step-by-step guide to preparing and presenting a biblical message---from studying a passage with skill and integrity to delivering a sermon with persuasion, accuracy, passion, and relevance. Evangelism Evangelism Part 1 Course #301 - Fall (Mondays) Evangelism Part 2 Course #302 – Spring (Mondays) This course of study is to help understand the need of Evangelism according to the Great Commission and to better equip Saints for the work in Ministry. Polity & Practice Deacon Wives Course # 501- (Wednesdays) This course covers the origin of the deaconess, requisites and qualifications, organization, ordinances, worship, watchcare the unchurched, training, relationships, finances, and the role of the deaconess. Mary Ashford Deacons in Black Baptist Church Course # 502(Mondays) This course outlines the qualities sought, the qualifications and duties of, and the biblical basis for deacons in the church. Demosesneeds Odems Layperson Preparation Course # 603 (Mondays) Building on the mandate of the Great Commission, the author uses the "1-5-4 Principle" to facilitate learning of the kingdom process for church growth. Electives Hebrew Bible Language Course #802 (Mondays) This introductory study is of the written, living and spoken Word of God as recorded in the ancient Hebrew language. Select scriptures from Genesis to Revelation will be carefully studied. Malartha Bosier Learning How to Eat to Live Biblically Course # 803 (Mondays) This course creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy choices biblically. Students obtain classroom instruction with homework assignments. By researching various scriptures, students will identify, analyze and discuss the biblical context of foods to be consumed for healthy living thereby increasing their quality of life. The bible will be used to reference certain in herbs and other foods found in the text to point out God’s Words as written in Genesis 1:29. Textbook: Holy Bible Instructor: Sis. Deborah Duncan-Hurdle Overcoming Fear by Faith Course #804 – (Wednesdays) This course is designed to give students the tools to grow and develop in Christian Maturity. This course will prepare the student to combat the tricks Satan uses to paralyze the mind through fear. Beverly Salazar Parenting: From Conception to Adolescent Course #801- (Mondays) This course provides an insightful, encouraging guide for parents who could use a little support while raising children in a culture that tears kids down. Shirley Brown Singles – Course # 805- (Wednesdays) Being single can feel like a fun adventure, or it can feel like an impossible aloneness. What is God's word, God's heart for your life in singleness? These studies explore that question-whether you are happy in singleness or find it trying. You will be encouraged to listen deeply to God, identify the gifts your life offers you, and grow into a sense of belonging. Being single in not just marking time; God is calling you today. This course features questions for group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection as well as a "Now or Later" section in each session.
