Colfax-Mingo Community School District Newsletter Tigerhawk Talk March 2013 Big “Thank You” to Mr. McCarthy & the Industrial Arts Class Superintendent Marty Lucas and Secretary Bert Deaton have moved the Central Administrative Offices to the high school site. The telephone number remains the same 515-674-3646, but the FAX number has changed to 515-674-3285. The Opportunity Program remains in the original Central Office building along with the transportation department. The Transportation Department telephone is 515-674-3328 where there is also an answering machine if no one is available to answer the phone. Along with the Central Office’s move to the high school, a desk and reception chairs arrived for that new area. Colfax-Mingo Middle School receives grant The Prairie Meadows Grant Advisory Committee and the Prairie Meadows Board of Directors have approved a Community Betterment Grant to the Colfax-Mingo School District in the amount of $5000.00 for our proposed Phase 4 Middle School Technology Project. The Middle School faculty, along with Mr. Jim Grife, will be exploring several options for using the funds to continue to update the technology used by the middle school students. In the past, the Technology Project funds have been used to replace computers in the Middle School computer lab and to add a second computer lab. The Colfax-Mingo Middle School is grateful to the Prairie Meadows Grant Advisory Committee and to the Prairie Meadows Board of Directors for this generous award. Students need to be four years old on or before September 15, 2013 for afternoon four year old section. Parents are required to provide transportation to and from school. Colfax-Mingo Elementary Preschool follows the ColfaxMingo Community School calendar. Class times for the 2013-14 school year 3 year old program - $110 month tuition/scholarships available Mon., Tue., Thu., Fri. 8:10 -11:00 a.m. *students must be 3 on or before Sept. 15, 2013 4 year old program- FREE Mon., Tue., Thu., Fri. 12:00 PM-3:00 PM. *students must be 4 on or before Sept. 15, 2013 Spring will soon be here, and it is time to plan fun family activities enjoying the outdoors. Here are some ideas for you: 1. Go for walks before/after dinner. Make it more exciting by looking for something specific ( a cat in the window). 2. Take the stairs instead of the escalator whenever possible. 3. Park away from your destination, and walk a “block”. 4. Participate in a walk or run for charity. There are several opportunities; locally Newton is hosting the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” on Friday, June 7th. Consider forming a team of family members; (contact person is Debby Pence at 641792-6635.) The American Cancer Society is the largest volunteer organization in the world, and their administrative costs are the lowest of all charities. 5. Plant a garden. Kids love digging in the dirt, so let them plant seeds and bulbs and watch things grow. Caring for the garden provides weeding and hoeing exercise, and fresh garden produce is tasty! 6. Have a weekly sports night. Each week, one family member picks the activity for the night. 7. Purchase child sized rakes so the kids can help with raking., and the smaller children can help picking up sticks Take activity breaks while working and kick around a soccer ball or play catch. 8. Walk the dog-research shows dog owners have more fun. Don’t have a pooch? Go for a walk “looking for dogs”! 9. Walk to the park and have a picnic! The concert in the evening included performances by members of the Simpson College Band, the Red Band (in which Misha played French Horn), and the Gold Band (in which Ashley played flute and Willa played clarinet). It was a fun experience for all participants, and both bands were great. Congratulations to these three outstanding instrumentalists! Contact your physician or health care provider ASAP March 2013 • Page 6 Directed by Michelle Grant Warmer weather is approaching fast and the high school choir is getting ready for a busy spring. With honor choirs, The Follies, and a field trip to Wells Fargo to perform at an Iowa Energy game all in February and March, we are keeping very busy. On February 14th, seven students traveled to Central College to perform with students from area schools and the Central College A Cappella choir. These students were chosen first by director nomination and then by Central College faculty to perform at this event. Congratulations to these students! From left to right: Jareth Barnes, Cenji Yu, Chris Warner, Olivia Maggard, Sydney McLaughlin, Hannah Boehm, and Donita Fatland. On February 28th, nine students from the Colfax-Mingo Concert Choir attended the annual HoIC Fine Arts Festival in Saydel to perform with students in our conference. From left to right: Jareth Barnes, Cenji Yu, Chris Warner, Hannah Boehm, Kelsey Sloan, Olivia Maggard, Megan Garrett, Nycky Butler, and Breanna Laugen. On Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd, many students will be performing for the annual variety show, The Follies. And finally, on Friday, March 15th, the Colfax-Mingo Concert Choir will be performing the national anthem at that evening’s Iowa Energy game vs. the Tulsa 66ers. We will provide transportation to and from the game, if needed. See Mrs. Grant with questions. We would love to have you come and support the choir for this exciting evening! Whoʼs On Your Playlist? The 3rd through 6th Graders put their favorite song, artist, or group on a Valentine heart and put it on the Elementary Music Room wall recently. Several students chose Taylor Swift, One Direction, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, and Flo Rida. There were a few country fans for Brooks & Dunn, Jason Aldean, and Nickelback. Ask your student, “Who’s on your playlist?” Elementary Honor Choirs The Fifth and Sixth Grade Honor Choirs have begun rehearsing for their April 1st, 2013, performance in Perry, Iowa. THERE IS NO SCHOOL THAT DAY for Colfax-Mingo students, so parents will have to be sure their singer has a ride to meet the bus at 11:30 p.m. Also please make sure your student has eaten lunch before catching the bus. More details will be coming home soon. Students will be performing with other 5th and 6th graders from the central Iowa area. Program The Colfax-Mingo Second, Third, and Fourth Grades present their music program on Thursday, February 28th, 2013, at the High School Stage. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. in the aforementioned order. Second grade sings Winter seasonal songs. Third grade reminds us that we are forever learning. Fourth grade teaches us some musical symbols and terms and plays some recorder songs. Come out and support these musical young people!
