TALMAGE IN DETKOIT HE PREACHES AT THE CITY OK THE STRAITS. ! t Sermon on the Crossing o f the Jordan by j Um Children o f Israel, the Test ' B e i • 1 a Joshoa 111, 17—An Interesting D ie D bthoit, March TA—Rev. Dr. Talmage, Who !h! now visiting this city, preaclieiigto<ay to a large unti intensely interested nudi enee in the Fort Street Presbyterian church, of which Rev. Dr. Rudcliffe is pastor, on on the crossing o f the Jordan by the chil drei: o f Israel, the text being from Joshua Hi, 17. “ And the priests that bare the ark o f the covenant o f the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the m idst of the Jordan, and ail the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all tbs people were passed clean over Jordan.“ Washington crossed the Delaware when orassiug was pronounced impossible, bu t he did it by boat. Xerxes crossed the Hellesaut with 2,000,000 men, but he did it by ridge. The Israelites crossed the lied sea, but the same orchestra that celebrated the deliverance of the one army sounded the atrangulation of the other. This Jordanic passage differs from all. There was no sacrifice o f bumau life—not so much as the loss o f a linchpin. The vanguard o f the host, made up o f priests, advanced until they put their foot at the brim o f the river, when immediately the streets o f Jerusalem were r.o more dry than the bed of that river It was as if all the vvuter had been drawu off, and then the dampness had been soaked up with a sponge, and then by • towel the road had been wiped dry. Yonder goes a great army of Israelites, the hosts Id uniform ; following them the wives, the children, the flocks, the herds. The people look up at thp crystalline w all of the Jordan as they pass and think what an awful disaster would com e to them if be fore they got to the opposite bank of that A ] h1od wall that wall should fall on them, and the thought makes the mothers hug theii children close to their hearts as they •widen their puce. Quick, uow; get them ali up mi the banks, the armed warriors, the wives ami children, flocks and herds, ami let this wonderful Jordanic passage be ••mpleleil forever S id in g on the shelved limestone, 1 look off upou that Jordau where Joshua crossed under the triumphal arch o f the rainbow woven out of the spray; the river which afterward became the baptistry wh#re Christ was sprinkled or plunge«!; the river where the ax—the borrowed ax—miracu lously swam Ht the prophet’s order; the river illustrious in the history of the world tor heroic faith and omnipotent deliver ance and typical of scenes yet to transpire in your life and mine—scenes enough to make ns, from the sole of the foot to the crown of the iieail, tingle with infinite glad E OCHS •)N mUDAN S BTOtCMY HANKS. Toms River, N. J., Thursday Afternoon, March 16, 1893 been natural, you would have supposed, foi the water t o have overflowed the region ali around about, and that great devastation would have taken place. B u t when God pui the dam iu front of the river he put a dam on the other side o f the river, so that, a© cording t o the text, the w ater halted and reared and stood there, and not overflowing the surrounding country. O h, the complete ness o f everything that G od does! One w ould have thought that if the waters o f Jordan had dropped until they were ouly tw o or three feet deep the Israel ites might have marched through it and have come up on the other hank with theii clothes saturated and their garments like those of men coining ashore from ship , wreck, and that would have been as won derful a deliverance, but God does some thing better than that. W hen the priests' feet touched the waters o f Jordan and they were drawn off, they m ight have thought there w ould have been a bed of mud and n g * ! h ' i c U V..! i,! ¡AYuUiu puss. Draw o ff the waters o f the Hudson or the Ohio, and there would be a good many duys, and perhaps many weeks, before the sediment would dry up, and yet here, in an Instant, immediately. G od provides a path through the depths o f Jorda n ; It Is so dry the passengers do not even get their feet damp. Oh, the completeness of everything t b it God does! Docs h ¿ ’m ake a universe? —it is a perfect clock, running ever since it was wound up, the fixed stars the pivots, the constellations the intermoving wheels, and ponderous laws the weights and mighty swinging poudulum , the stars in the great dom e of night striking the mid night, and the sun, with brazen tongue, tolling the hour of noon. The wildest comet has a chain of law thut it cannot break. The thistle down flying before the schoolboy’s breath Is con trolled by the same law that controls the sun and the planets. Tho rosebush In your window is governed by the same principle thut governs the tree of the universe on which the stars are ripening fruits, and on which God w ill o‘ne day put his hand and shakedown the fruit—a perfect universe. No astronomy has over proposed an amend ment. If God makes a Bible, it Is a complete B ible Standing amid the dreadful and delightful truths, you seem to he in the midst o f an orchestra where the wailings over sins, and the* rejoicings over pardon, and the martial strains o f victory make the chorus like mi anthem o f eternity. This book seems to you the ocean of truth, on every wave i i which Christ walks—some times in the darkness-of prophecy, again in the splendors with which he walks on Gal ilee. In this l.'nik apostle answers to proph et, Paul to Isaiah, Revolution to G enesisglorious light, turning midnight sorrow into the midnoou joy, dispersing every fog, hushing every tempest. He planted the cedars and the heavenly Lebanon. He struek out o f the rock the riversof life, singing under the trees, singing under the thrones. He quar ried the sardonyx and crystal, and the topaz o f the heavenly wall. He put down the jasper fur the foundation ami heaped up the amethyst for the capital and swung the 12 gates, which are 12 pearls. In one instant he thought out a universe, and yet he be came a child, crying for his mother, feeling along the sides o f the manger, learning to walk Omnipotence slieutbed in the muscle and flesh of a child’s arm, omniscience strung in the optic nerve of a ch ild ’s eye, infinite love heating iu the ch ild ’s heart, a great God appearing In the form of a child 1 year old, 5 years old, 15 years old. W hile all the heavens were ascribing to him glory and honor and power on earth men Bald, “ W ho is this fellow?” W hile all the heaveuly hosts, with folded w ing about their faces, bowed down before him crying, “ Ho ly i IhilyI” ou earth they denounced him as a blasphemer and a sot. A complete Saviour, a com plete Bible, a complete universe, a complete Jordanic passage. Everything that God does is complete. Again, 1 learn from this Jordanio nassugo that between us and every Canaan o f success and prosperity there is a river that must ba paosed. Now, be wise enough to apply it in religion. Eminent Christian character is ouly gained by the Jordanic passage; no man Just happened to get good. W by does that man know so much about the Scriptures? He was studying the Bible while you were reading a novel. He was on Are with the sublimities o f the Bible while you were sound asleep. By tug, tussle, pushing running in the Christian life that man g ot so strong for God; in a hun-1 dred Solferinos he learned how to fight; in a hundred shipwrecks he learned how to swim. Tears over sin, tears over Zion’s desolation, team over the impenitent, tears over the graves mode, are the Jordan which that man had passed. Sorrow pales the cheek, and fades the eye, and wrinkles the brow, and withers the hands. There are mourning garments in the wardrobe, and there are deaths in every fam ily record—all around are the relics of the dead. ! The Christian has passed the Red sea o f , trouble, and yet he thinks there Is a Jordan o f death between him and heaven. He j comes dow n to that Jordan o f death and ! thinks how many have been lost there. When Molyneux was exploring the Jordan ! in Palestine, he had his boats all knocked ! to pieces in the rapids o f that river. And there are a great many men who have gone down in the river o f death; the Atlantic and Pacific have not swallowed so many. It is an aw ful thing to make shipwrecks on the rock o f ruin; masts failing, hurricanes flying, death coming, groanings in the wa ter, moanings in the w ind, thunder in the sky, while God with the Anger of the light ning writes ali over the sky, “ I will tread them in m y wrath, and I will trample them in m y fury.” The Christian comes down to this raging torrent, and he knows he must pass out, and as he comes toward the time his breath gets shorter, and his last breath leaves him as hu steps into the stream, and no sooner does he touch the stream than it is parted, and he goes through dry shod while all the waters wave their plumes, crying: " 0 death, where Is thy «ting? O grave, whoro is thy victory?" G«d shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more weeping, and there shall be no more death. Some o f your children have already gone up the other bank. You let them down on this side o f tue bank; they w ill be on the other bank to help you up with supernatu ral strength. The other morning at m y ta túe, all my family present, I thought to myself how pleasant It would be if I could put all into a bout and then go in with them, and we could pull across the river to the next world and be there all together. No family parting, no gloom y obsequies. It wouldn't take five minutes to go from bank to hank, and then in that better world to be together forever. W ouldn’t it be pleas ant for you to take all your family into thut blessed country if you could all g o t o gether? I remember my mother in her dying hour «aid to m y father, “ Father, wouldn't it be pleasant i f we could all g o together?” But wo cannot all go together. We must go oue by one, and we m ust be grateful i f we t there at all. What a heaven it will be we have all our families there to look around and see all th*« children are present! You would rather have them all there, and you go with bare brow forever, than that one should be missing to complete the gar lands of heaven for your coronal. Tho Lord God o f Joshua, give them a safe Jor danic passage! Even children will go through dry shod. Those o f us wlie were brought up in the country remember, when the summer was coming on iu our boyhood days, we always longed for the day when we were to go bare footed, and after teasiug our mothers In re gard t o i l for a good while, and they convugutod, we remember the delicious sensation o f the cool grass when we put our uneev feicu fool u* ft. And the time will com e when these shoes we wear now, lest wo be cut o f the sharp places o f this world, shali bo taken off, and with unsandaled foot we will step Into the bed qf tbe river; with feet untrammeled, free from pain and fatigue, we will gain that last journey, when, with one foot in the bed o f the river and the other foot on the other bank, we struggle upward. That will be heaven. Oh, I pray for all my dear people a safe Jordanic passage. That is what the dying Christian husband felt when be said: "H ow the candle flickers, Neljiel P ut it out; 1 shall sleep well to night and wake in the m orning." A WORD OF COMFORT. One word o f com fort on this subject for all the bereaved. You see, our departed friends have not been submerged—have not been swamped in tbe waters. They have only erased over. These Israelites were just as thoroughly alive on the west ern banks o f the Jordan as they had been on the eastern banks o f tbe Jordan, and our departed Christian friends have only crossed over—not sick, not dead, not ex hausted, not extinguished, not blotted out, but with healthier respiration, and stouter pulses, and keener eyesight, and better prospects—crossed over. Their sins, their physical and mental disquiet, all left clear this side, an eternally flowing, impassable obstacle between them and all human and satanic pursuit. Crossed over! Ob, I shake hands o f congratulation with all the bereaved in the consideration that our de parted Christian friends are safe. Why waa there so m uch Joy in certain circles in New York when people heard from the fri« nd* who were on board belated steamer? It was feared that vessel had gone t o the bottom o f the sea, and when the friends on this side heard that the Steamer had arrived safely In Liverpool had w e not a right to congratulate th« people in New Y ork that their friends had got safely across? A n d is It nos right this morning that I congratulate you that your departed friends are safe on the shore o f heaven? Would you have them back again? W ould rc u have those old parents back again? Remaining In jo u r town over Sunday and being a Methodist, I attended the morning ser vice In the M. E. church. I took my seat In a pew on the cast side o f the main aisle. On tbe occasion rsfered to,tbe regular Pastor was absent His place was filled by a gentleman of large liza and fine robust appearance, who gave us a very edifying and helpful sermon, one that, as tar as 1 could see, was received by the congregation In the spirit of Its dtllrery, and, judging by the effect on myself, was calculated to do good. At the dote o f tbe sermon, I found out that tbe Preacher was a a very clever beggar—a necessary qualifica tion for a Methodist itinerant you know. But what I want more especially to mention is tbe annoyance I was subjected to by the Inattention o f some few In the audience, and the want or lack of courtesy iu its exhibition. From the very first I could not help but notice a restless ness and uneasiness on tbs part of these few. as if the worship o f the Supreme Being aud their own spiritual ro o d was not all they were there for, On the contrary, judging by tbe way their heads revolved, fram sida to side during service, I think I may be excused for supposing they came expressly to see what was going on, for at every little noise or when there were any additions t.a the coiigregatiou, around would go their heads, and one person in front of me made beat use of the lime pos sible during every prayer to see everything sigh'.uble, Now sir, you will excuse me I think, If I remark just here that in my church, such m ions are not thought to denote good breeding, to say nothing of such a lament able lack of reverence as they show. And that Is what I rise to explain. V isitor . lars— ribbon trimmed, braided, embroidered, feather edged, beautied in a hundred ways. Ah, I reft».® ed, if sha only knew the sacrifice it had cOst me I If she knew that I was almost equal to that lover who pawned his winter overcoat to buy a bou quet o f flowers for his ladylove! Does she think that it has been sent by some high born love, who will present himself some day to claim his reward? W hat a mistake she has made! Even though she were free t o love another than her odious husband 1 was much too far below her in station to think o f claiming her hand! “ One evening, when she attended a ball, I stood outside of the palace to watch for her, and I saw her as she alighted from her carriage, rad lent with beauty, while a murmer of admiration burst from the crowd as she passed by. The women gazed at her with envious eyes, the men ad miringly, while an involuntary cry of as tonishment burst from ray lips. She had on my emerald necklace. A fter they had stibn the stones there was no doubt that the occurrence liatl takofT place, and the idle gossips began to comment upon it. My idol enjoyed an unblemished reputation. In suite of her husband’s dissipation and his indifference toward her, calumny bud never been able to attack her, but now the venticillo Don Basilio sings of in the opera began to make itself audible. One day, w h ile I w «r . ¿ s fiA t 'c young men, they tqxiko o f the emeralds, and a simpleton finally made a sneering rc mark about the woman. “ The M id ’* word* w o iim I m y fry, » d a ily because the rest agreed to them. A C o w b oy D is t r ic t A tto rn e y . Everybody in the Panhandle knows L o renzo Dow Miller. Better than that, every body likes him and admires him. Dow lives at Panhandle City and la district at torney and rules over 29 counties. He is a genius. Bom in Texas, he w ent to the Panhandle years ago, when the Indians were still in the country. His capital consisted of an unusual amount o f com m on sense and a 6-shooter. He went out on the plains as g cowboy and has punched long horns all the way from Lout valley to the neutral strip. Around his campfire at night he pored over an old volum e o f Blackstone. Before very long he bought some more books. Honest, sober and iudustrlous, he made friends as fast as the prairie gross grows in the spring or a yearling runs in a stampede. He astonished the world one day by announcing hU. candidacy for di»trlct attorney. He astonished the world on the day after the election bjr having beaten his opponent. From that time Dow has gone on until he is invincible in his district. One of his arguments, made before a Greer county jury before the vcm aoular of the ranch had given way to the polish o f the effete east, was os tallows: “ Gentlemen of the jury, look at that pris oner. His phis is dead tough. He’s a thief, and a sn ea k thief at that. L ook at those knots on the back o f his head. They are the bumps o f cussedness. H ow I came to know is, I tra veled w ith a circus once and got onto the racket. Now, I w a n t to give you a confidential stiff and drop a few point# into your sybtem. If you turn that feller loose, the bars o f every ranch ia this county will be down before Sunday night, and some fine steers w ill be lost.” He le t the com go, Rnd the man got tw o years.-—Galveston New& It m ight be supposed that every man, woman and child in this country was fa miliar w ith Mr. Blaine’s face, but it seems that this was not the case. One evening just before the June convention a gentle man rather hurriedly entered the Fifth Avenue hotel reading room and mode a bee line for the newsstand. H is face was pale, but in no other respeat did It differ from the central figure of 10,000 cartoons familiar to tho public at large. The news boy in charge o f the st<aid naked the pros pective purchaser w hat was wanted. The gentleman named a couple o f papers. “ Yea, sir," responded the youth with alacrity, holding ou t his bond for the change. The pale gentleman paid no a t tention to this mute appeal, and taking the papers was moving off when the boy called him back. “ W ho shall I charge them to, mister?" “J. G. Blaine.” Not a ray o f intelligence lie up the news vender’s eye. Instead o f that he fixed a rather suspicious glance ag ihe retreating figure, while the loungers in the vicinity murmured to themselves, “ A nd is fame.” —Kate Field’s Washington. The proportion o f spectacled to unspecta cled Women, counting in all ages, was as 0 to 250 In Washington street o s against T in Tremont street, or 18 ou t o f a total o f 600 In both streets. I doubt i f a lesser proportion could be found in any other American dty. These figures cheered me. Another He was nailed. The Boston g irl might be human after all.—Cor. New Y ork World.
