W A L K I N G Perkins Supply Medical 6 in 10 Adults Now Get Physical Activity by Walking More people are walking but most do not get enough physical activity. Find out how we can make it easier for people to walk to the places they need and want to go. Less than half of adults are getting enough physical activity to benefit their health. One way to get that activity is by walking, which is the most popular form of physical activity in the U.S. Because walking is possible for most people and does not require special skills or facilities, it is a way for many people to be more physically active. Physical activity helps control weight and has benefits beyond weight control. Physical activity, such as walking, can help improve everyone’s health, even if you don’t lose weight. People who are physically active live longer and are at lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and some cancers. How much physical activity do adults and children need? •Adults need at least 2 ½ hours (150 minutes) a week of physical activity at a moderate effort. This effort is similar to a fast-paced walk. •Children should get 1 hour a day, every day. Women and older adults are less likely than men and younger adults to get as much physical activity as is recommended. Here are some ways of improving spaces and increasing places for walking to help more people become physically active. You can support more frequent walking in your community by: •Starting a walking group with friends and neighbors. •Help others walk more safely by driving the speed limit, yielding to people who walk. •Following safe walking practices such as using crosswalks when crossing streets. •Participate in local planning efforts to help identify where walking paths or side walks should be located. •Working with schools to encourage walking to school. 2 • Complete Medical Equipment • 24 Hour Oxygen Service • Service • Rental • Repairs • Beds • Sales • Seat Lift Chairs • Scooters • Wheelchairs • Diabetic • Orthopedic • Ostomy Products • Bathroom Safety Equipment “Perkins Medical Supply is my go to place for all my medical supplies including bandages, flexible wraps, compression stockings, walking canes, heating pads, ice packs, bio freeze and much more. And don’t forget to tune into “Cindy’s Health Beat & Where to Eat” Saturday mornings from 11am to noon on WTTB 1490am. Once again, Dr. Paul V. Minotty and Dr. Stephen M. Tate, board certified ophthalmologists and cataract surgeons have brought another dimension to New Vision Eye Center. Together with Dr. Roger J. Meyer and Dr. David J. O’Brien, New Vision continues to have “new innovative visions” for their center, always striving to bring the best of eye care to their patients and our area. Being the first and only practice on the Treasure Coast to offer Laser Cataract Surgery is what sets them apart from others. There are only 70 LenSx© Lasers in the country and only 12 in the state of Florida. How fortunate we are that Dr. Minotty has brought it to their Cataract Institute at New Vision Eye Center. When I sat down to discuss this new technology with Dr. Minotty his first comment was “This is truly a milestone… the most exciting thing in 40 years to happen in cataract surgery. We now have a way to offer more predictable outcomes.” The LenSx© laser is an advanced, precision based technology that operates with unmatched precision and computer-control to further customize the procedure to your eye. Dr. Stephen Tate agreed, and stated that “by adding computer aided precision to the key steps of cataract surgery, the LenSx© Laser ensures the highest-precision surgical incisions.” As Dr. Minotty explains, “the laser provides a more precise circular incision around the cataract, improving the accuracy during placement of the intraocular lens implant, and leads to a greater predictability for patient outcomes. The laser pre-softens the cataract, allowing surgeons to minimize the use of ultrasound energy to remove the cataract lens. This allows for faster recovery.” He goes on to tell me, “Astigmatism correction can be done simultaneously during cataract surgery using the LenSx© Laser system.” Dr. Minotty conducted extensive investigation into the various lasers from other companies, however the LenSx© performance and precision was by far the best. The professional staff at the Cataract Institute at New Vision attended extensive training to become certified with the LenSx©. When I asked Dr. Minotty, “how is it that you are always the first to bring in new technology to the Treasure Coast?”, he humbly stated that a progressive, bright surgeon, Dr. Stephen M. Tate, is what makes the difference. Crofoot, MD, doesn’t want joint pain to slow anyone down. If you’ve been struggling with hip or knee pain and are ready to get back to life, it may be time contact Dr. Crofoot and learn about total joint replacement. After earning her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Dr. Crofoot completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center and a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Crofoot practiced in Maine for several years before joining the medical staff at Sebastian River Medical Center. “Growing up, I always knew I was going to be a doctor,” she said. “I played sports and I wanted to help people, so I was drawn to orthopedics. During medical school, I saw a total knee replacement procedure and that really reaffirmed my desire to go into orthopedic surgery. Plus, the bedside manner of some of the orthopedic doctors I knew wasn’t as endearing as I would have liked, and I thought I could do better.” Dr. Crofoot says she enjoys solving medical issues instead of managing symptoms. “In medicine, orthopedics is one of the few specialties where you can actually fix a problem long term.” 8 And although the idea of surgery can be overwhelming, joint replacement can get you back to doing the things you love, the things that make life worth living. “I try conservative, non-operative approaches first, but if those don’t work, joint replacement surgery really is the best option,” said Dr. Crofoot. “When a joint is worn out and you become more and more immobile, your lifestyle and quality of life is affected. The minute you stop being active, your overall health SRMC Comprehensive Orthopedic Center focuses on conditions and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Sebastian River Medical Center’s orthopedic specialists handle everything from a torn muscle or broken bone to total joint replacement and minimally invasive surgery. Sebastian River Medical Center offers comprehensive multidisciplinary care in an environment where patients come first. is impacted. Joint replacement surgery is a big surgery, but it can really change a patient’s quality of life. I always tell people, ‘When you cry uncle, when you’ve tried everything else, when you’ve had enough of the pain, you’re ready.’” According to Dr. Crofoot, there are some exciting innovations in joint replacement surgery. For example, some inserts are now being produced with Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant which prevents the oxidative degradation of the plastic used in replacement joints. Other changes involve post-operative recovery and pain management techniques. “The quicker you get up , the quicker you start moving around, the quicker Kirk Maes, MD your overall recovery,” said Dr. Crofoot. “That’s why we implement pain medication before the surgery even begins. This way, patients don’t experience as much pain when they wake up, which allows them to move around sooner and start the recovery process.” Dr. Crofoot has joined Kirk Maes, MD, at his orthopedic and sports medicine practice in Sebastian. “Not only am I extremely happy to be working alongside one of the Treasure Coast’s most respected orthopedic surgeons, I’m very excited about my move to Florida,” she said. “After spending so many years in Maine, I’m really looking forward to warmer winters.” The addition of Dr. Crofoot to the Sebastian River Medical Center staff is just another way we’re setting the standard for orthopedic care. Below is an employee testimonial from Mrs. Tropf regarding the care of her husband, Ken….. When I first picked up this card and read it, I thought “oh yeah, right pick out an employee with those attributes”…it just happens to describe the whole place and ALL the employees. Where do I start, from the little “bouncy”, sweet, full of personality Heather to Allen, who not only keeps the floors clean enough to eat off of, but is as sweet as any man could be. The wonderful, competent nurses, aides, and I could go on and on. But, then, I looked at it again… Compassion…Leadership…Attitude…Safety…Service… Here is my nominee…KANO BROWN…When my husband was first admitted to Grace he was almost comatose, he had no clue of his surroundings or who he was. He was put on a mechanical soft diet for fear of choking and thickened liquids. He was dining in the room where they needed assistance eating. I was always there so I could (try) to feed him. One day Kano was sitting across the room, he was assisting two other patients, but I would look up and notice him observing us. When he was finished he came over and asked if I would like him to try. I said Yes, thank you and thought to myself, “yeah, lots of luck with that”. Kano talked very quiet and gently to my husband prodding gently with “Mr. Ken you need to eat to get strong”, etc. Every once in a while he would lean over and quietly say something directly in his ear. As Kano spoke to him he spoon fed him his liquids. My husband completed two full glasses, for him of “much needed nourishment”. I said “how did you do that”? He looked at me with that beautiful winning smile of his and quietly said “with love Mrs. Tropf, with love from my heart”. I was awestruck and completely taken with Kano from that time on. It is used by clinical therapists on the mobility impaired and is designed to strengthen stance, improve gait, and enhance active motor learning – while protecting its users. This technology is exclusive to Nurse on Call for the Home Healthcare setting. NOC therapists use this device in conjunction with other forms of therapy. The Tibion Bionic Leg becomes a unique tool for clinicians to use so they can provide the best possible outcomes for mobility impaired patients. How does it work? The Tibion Bionic Leg supports the principles of neuroplasty and active motor learning that has been shown to be highly effective and lasting. In some patients, the “carryover” affect can be seen after a single therapy session – even when the injury has occurred years earlier. • Requires patient to shift weight to affected limb before it will activate • Breaks the compensatory cycle • Device “learns” movements and will only assist when needed and backs off when it is not • This intention to move helps patients relearn how to use their affected limb Vero Beach Staff SPECIAL VERO HEALTH FAIR EVERY WEDNESDAY from 6:30am to 5pm NO DOCTORS ORDER REQUIRED GLYCO-A1C • CBC • Lipid Panel Comprehensive Metabolic Profile Highly Sensitive C-Reactive Protein PSA • TSH • Pro-Time (PT) Liver & UA • Direct LDL Cholesterol For information on tests go to www.labtestsonline.org Fort Pierce Staff Each test only $10.00 FORT PIERCE HEALTH FAIR WEDNESDAYS 6:30am to 4:30pm For the Mobility Impaired • Stroke (CVA) • General Lower Extremity Weakness • Functional Decline • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) • Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) • Multiple Sclerosis • Early Stage Parkinsons HHA# 299993209 Traditional Medicare pays for Home Health Services at 100% A better life can begin with just one phone call to Nurse on Call professionals. ETPS, or electro therapeutic point stimulation, which is also known as “needle-less acupuncture,” just might be for you. Kat Gerhke, LMT, offers this therapy at True Colors Salon and Spa in Vero Beach. She says “It’s becoming more popular here as people realize they can get all the benefits of acupuncture without all the puncturing.” Fans of ETPS, which uses tiny electric pulses instead of needles, credit the therapy for relief of back and joint pain, fibromyalgia, migraines, tension, TMJ, lymph edema, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel. ETPS can even help people quit smoking. Anything that acupuncture can do, electro therapeutic point stimulation can too. Well, except that puncturing thing. For some people, nothing spells relief like a full body massage. Most, however, see a massage as a reward or a treat and they don’t realize the many health benefits that accompany this rather pleasant form of wellness therapy. Many insurance companies recognize these preventative benefits, and they began to include massage in their more comprehensive policies years ago as part of their wellness approach. Massage enhances the immune system, stimulates lymphatic movement, in- creases flexibility and circulation, while it decreases anxiety, swelling and stiffness, blood pressure, water retention, cramping and pain. Regular massages help to push toxins from the tissue into the bloodstream where they can be removed from the body by your kidneys. Cassidy Tarble, LMT, who works in the massage department at True Colors alongside Kat, says “More and more people are making massage a regular part of their health routine. Compared to exercise and dieting, and the other things we do to stay healthy, massage is just a little easier to stick with, I think, than some of those. Its like finding out your favorite food is super healthy. Only this is true!” She might just have a point there. For some people, nothing spells relief like a full body massage. Most, however, see a massage as a reward or a treat and they don’t realize the many health benefits that accompany this rather pleasant form of wellness therapy. 20 True Colors Salon & Spa 772.569.4247 1281 Old Dixie Hwy., Vero Beach FL 32960 • [email protected] www.TrueColorsSalon.com 21 N U T R I T I O N Why live at any Assisted Living community when you can choose by Colleen Sanders-Symanski, RN Certified in Nutrition, Wellness, & Weight Mgt. Healthy nutrition gives strength to our bones, energy for everyday tasks, fuel for athletic achievements, provides essential vitamins and minerals, and helps prevent illnesses and diseases like diabetics, high cholesterol, and obesity. Diet fads and “plans” do not work for long term healthy weight and wellness success. In addition, eating correctly does not require a lifestyle change. Eating is necessary; the difference between eating and breathing is one is voluntary and the other is involuntary. Healthy Nutrition, LLC assists individuals to make healthier eating easier and spontaneous while still enjoying the pleasure and socialization surrounded with eating. Our bodies don’t know if we ate soup or nuts but it does know the quality and nutrients we fed it. Our services include but are not limited to the following: • Nutritional education & tools for better health • Food and vitamin analysis • Healthy weight management • Diabetic education • Physician-ordered diets such as low sodium, healthy heart, carb or calorie counting • Business wellness plans • Lectures & community events • Grocery/Produce tours & Cooking classes • Table etiquette for business functions • High quality vitamins & supplements Healthy Nutrition is a locally owned nutrition and wellness company. Our focus is on healthy weight, wellness, and education. Many of our clients understand the benefits of being healthier and achieving a healthy weight. They want to reduce their Colleen Sanders-Symanski, RN risks or illness, prevent the need for medications, or want to be able to avoid the side effects of medications. Other clients just want an analysis of their food and supplement intake. We have an advisory panel of expert health and medical professionals to consult with as needed and also work with our client’s physicians as requested. If you get a prescribed diet and you don’t REALLY know how to shop or prepare it, chances are it will not be as successful as expected. We teach you how to succeed! Clients also have email and web support. As the owner of Healthy Nutrition, I believe community involvement is an important aspect of our business philosophy and services. We support the efforts of our clients to help those in need by giving financially as well as “hands-on”. Visit www.healthnut2go.com for information about us, nutrition topics, our partners, and community involvement activities. Malone, MD Richard Steinfeld, MD ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER OF VERO BEACH Orthopaedic Update: Treatment with Total Knee Replacement Continuing to improve pain relief for post op care following total knee replacement is an ongoing goal of orthopaedic surgeons. A combination of techniques utilizing spinal anesthetic and femoral nerve block is very safe. The spinal anesthetic allows the patient to breathe on their own and avoids nausea and vomiting post op. With the addition of the femoral nerve block this gives excellent relief of pain. Patients now use compression cold/heat therapy which can be very beneficial for quicker recovery with less pain. Patient Specific Knees and Gender Specific Knees are new advancements in joint replacement technology. Patient Specific Knees are generated from MRI and x-rays to produce exact knee models. These models are used to create patient specific cutting blocks that the surgeon uses in the operating room. If proper alignment is achieved, a prosthesis may last 25 years. Gender Specific Knees are total knee replacement components designed for the male and female anatomy. This allows better fit and alignment of components. Richard Steinfeld, MD is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His orthopaedic practice includes sports injuries, hip, knee, and shoulder reconstruction, general orthopaedics including foot, ankle, hand surgery, and fracture care. Dr. Steinfeld also specializes in advanced and leading technologies such as Hip Resurfacing. Resurfacing of the hip joint is a bone preserving approach that offers younger, active patients the ability to live pain-free and engage in most activities. The worn surfaces of the hip are resurfaced with a smooth metal cap and socket without violating the bone normally removed with a hip replacement. From an activity standpoint, hip resurfacing allows most patients to return to more active lifestyles including impact activities such as tennis, running, skiing, etc. EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS: A Non-Surgical Approach To Reduce Back Pain Marcus J. This specialty is particularly helpful for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and joint replacement post operative care. With his training focused on managing pain, Dr. Malone performs Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs). This process is a common non surgical treatment method used to help relieve pain in the neck, low back, arm and leg so that patients may resume their normal activities. Steven joined SRMC in April, coming from Shands Starke Regional Medical Center in Starke, Florida, an affiliate Health Management facility, where he was the Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his role at Shands Starke, he served as the Chief Operating Officer at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Steven ran track and played football at East Tennessee State University and still runs every morning at 4:30am. Prior to joining Health Management, he proudly served his country in a number of leadership roles with the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in Iraq. While on active duty, he earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from New York Institute of Technology, Ellis College. He received his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. “After being a Marine, I knew my civilian career had to be something where I could contribute to something larger than myself…something where I was accountable to make the world a better place,” he shared with me. And he found it in hospital administration. Steven’s leadership role at SRMC is about supporting. “I think of myself as being at the bottom of things, not the 30 top…my job is to help doctors, nurses and staff to help patients.” He proudly tells me that his Marine experience has prepared him for this position, “When you lead Marines in combat, you can’t fail and I feel the same way here. I’m completely dedicated to providing the discipline and passion needed to accomplish our mission.” While visiting the Sebastian and Vero Beach area with his wife, Katy, and three small daughters earlier this year they spotted five dolphins and two stingrays, with that said you know the ladies were ready to move. And, of course, once settling in they purchased a boat and enjoy family time on the water. Visit Steven Salyer, CEO of Sebastian River Medical Center at 13695 U.S. Highway 1 in Sebastian, Florida. Simple, says Courtney Turner, Owner of True Colors, “When you know your service provider won’t be offended, you can ask for what you want.” True Colors offers a wide array of services from hair and nails to massage and skin care, all in a luxurious and spacious setting. Complimentary wine, beverages and snacks await you in the lounge, but its the attitude at True Colors that sets it apart. “I’ve seen some very nice places, and I know there are a lot of very talented people out there, but the salon and spas that I liked enough to return to were the ones that made me feel really comfortable. When I felt like I was among friends, I could say ‘oh, I wear it this way,’ or ‘hey, that’s too light,’ and that’s when I would get exactly what I wanted.” Says Courtney. “Think of me as a client advocate. I’ve been a client much more than I’ve been an owner, and I try to approach my job from the client’s perspective. At True Colors, we reach out to you and try to create a relationship where you feel comfortable telling us anything, even what you don’t like, so that you get precisely what you want. When I recruit our talent, I make sure they are like us: people who love people.” “So if you’re like me, you’ve seen plenty of salon and spas, and you’ve had plenty of mediocre outcomes. CAREGIVER CRUISE GETAWAY CONTEST... read more about it in Pulse Points page 51 36 Each year, Medicare recipients who are enrolled in Medicare Part D, and those interested in enrolling, have an open enrollment period. Starting in 2013, that time frame moved up to October 15 thru December 7! If you want to review your plan choices or change plans you must do so by December 7 (with a few exceptions which will be mentioned later). Medicare Part D is an “opt-in” prescription drug plan offered by Medicare that started in 2006. Congress took a big step in offering this program by creating a competitive privatized market for prescription drug plans. What that means to you is there are MANY choices for coverage! What it also means is that because these companies that offer the benefits are “for profit” they are constantly making changes to their premiums, copays, and formularies. Also in 2013 there are a few additional changes coming that will better serve beneficiaries. The donut hole coverage for brand and generic medications is better. Brands will be discounted 52.5% and generics 21%. Also, the donut hole will start at $2,970 (up $40 from 2012). Finally, to promote excellence in quality and customer service in its plans, Medicare is offering a special enrollment period for beneficiaries who want to switch to a 5 star rated plan at any point during the plan year. There will also be opportunities for members whose plan rating has not achieved at least a 3 star rating for 3 years to also switch. So, how do you review your plan? There are a few options, but one of the easiest is to visit the www.medicare.gov website. Select “Compare Drug and Health Plans” and follow the prompts and enter all of your current medications. The website will choose plans based on the lowest overall cost for the year, will calculate what your copays will be for each medication, and will also predict if/when you will hit the donut hole. You can even enroll in a new plan directly from this site. If you do choose to do this, your coverage will switch starting January 1, 2013 from your current plan choice to your new plan choice. Another excellent website with a lot of information about plan options is www.q1medicare.com. If you prefer personalized service choosing a prescription plan, you have a few options as well. The State of Florida has an information line, 211, and calling that number will help you locate organizations such as SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders – a Florida Department of Elder Affairs assistance agency). In addition, many independent insurance agents will sit down with you to evaluate your plan choices. And, finally, Bay Street Pharmacy offers this as a no charge service by appointment. Beginning the first week of October we will offer appointments on a first come first serve basis. Please call 772-589-2043 for more information. 37 S R M C R E S O U R C E S Sebastian River Medical Center: A Community Partner for All Your Healthcare Needs A well-balanced community is only as good as the people and businesses within its periphery. Cardiac Rehabilitation An important part of comprehensive heart care is helping patients return to the activities they enjoy. The multidisciplinary team at SRMC includes physical therapists, nutrition and exercise specialists that work together to provide a customized approach for each patient. Cardiac rehabilitation begins in the hospital, following a heart attack or other acute illness. Before leaving the hospital, patients learn about their disease and risk factors that contribute to heart disease. Patients begin a medically supervised, monitored exercise program that includes individual support from exercise professionals. Once monitoring is no longer necessary, patients continue with a customized exercise program and learn how to incorporate activity into their lifestyle. For more information call (772) 581-2029. Unfortunately, not enough routine education addresses oral health care and the risk of gum disease that diabetics face when blood sugar levels are high. Too much glucose (sugar) in the blood from diabetes can cause pain, infection, delayed healing, and other problems in the mouth. Plaque comes from eating foods that contain sugars or starches. When diabetes is not controlled, glucose levels in your saliva help germs and plaque grow. Plaque can also cause gum disease (gingivitis/periodontal disease), and people with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and causes red, swollen and bleeding gums. Treatment includes daily brushing and flossing and regular dental cleanings. Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease and causes: • red, swollen, and bleeding gums • gums that have pulled away from the teeth • pus between the teeth and gums • bad breath • loose teeth • gum abscesses Keep your Mouth Healthy by Taking These Steps •Keep your blood glucose numbers controlled. Know your A1C. •Eat healthy and follow the meal plan ordered by your physician. •Brush your teeth with an ADA recommendedtoothpastethatcontains fluoride. •Brush first thing in the morning, before going to bed, and after each meal and snack. •Use an electric toothbrush or soft toothbrush. •Gently brush along the gum line, as well as all surfaces of your teeth. •Brush your tongue and cheeks, as they also trap plaque •Change your toothbrush every 3 months or sooner if the brush looks worn or the bristles spread out. •Ask your dentist about using an anti plaque or anti-gingivitis mouth rinse to control plaque and prevent gum disease. •Use dental floss to clean in between your teeth at least once a day. Flossing helps prevent plaque from building up on your teeth. •When flossing, slide the floss up and down and then curve it around the base of each tooth and use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. Or use a dental pick or brush—thin tools designed to clean between the teeth. You can buy these at drug or grocery stores. •If you wear dentures, keep them clean by cleaning them with anti bacterial tablets. Have them adjusted if they become loose or uncomfortable. •Call your dentist right away if you have any signs of mouth problems. •See your dentist at least twice/year for a cleaning, preventive maintenance check, and oral exam. Your dentist may suggest more visits because of your diabetic condition. What’s more… this technology and specialized care is covered 100% under Medicare! Congestive heart failure is the No. 1 reason adults 65 and older end up in the emergency room. It also is responsible for more re-admissions than any other diagnosis. “We check their medication and make sure they are taking it as directed by their physicians,” said Teri Robotti, CHCSP, District Sales Manager of NURSE ON CALL We educate on CHF, monitor their vital signs and talk to them about the foods they need to avoid.” According to a recent study at Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, they purchased 10 ZOE fluid status monitors, which were used by home health care nurses to measure the fluid congestion in a patient’s chest. The device predicted increased fluid volume two weeks before the patient began to show any symptoms, giving physicians and nurses time to adjust medications before hospitalization became necessary. Under the new program, Beaufort Memorial was able to cut re-admissions by 56 percent in three months! “The collaborative effort, between NURSE ON CALL and our patient’s local physicians, has a major impact on our patients’ ability to monitor their own condition, and on a physician’s ability to promptly adjust medication, diet, and activity levels, and virtually eliminate the need for frequent emergency room visits and hospitalizations”, said Teri Robotti “using this innovative device is revolutionary in the management of our patients living at home with heart failure.” Their Heart to Heart Advanced Cardiac Team at Home uses ZOE as just one of the many offerings which includes: • REGISTERED DIETICIANS • CERTIFIED LYMPHEDEMA THERAPISTS • BRIDGING THERAPY/INJECTIONS • PT/INR MONITORS TO MANAGE COUMADIN just to name a few! But the benefits go far beyond aesthetics to full body strength and flexibility that allow most practitioners to glide through life without as many of the aches and pains that we accept as part of the aging process. In the words of Joseph Pilates (1888 – 1967) himself, “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.” Pilates is known for working the core muscles, or the Powerhouse as Mr. Pilates called it. The abdominals and lower back muscles work in unison to stabilize the pelvis and to hold the spine in alignment. Being able to do this in different anatomical planes (seated, lying, kneeling and standing) is key to preventing lower back injury and explains Pilates growing popularity among golfers. Lengthening the Powerhouse muscles as they fire (“eccentric contraction”) helps create space between the vertebrae, preventing compression of intervertebral disks, ensuing injury and herniations. For golfers and tennis players, this translates into longevity in their game. For the rest of us, this means better posture and long, lean muscles. Learning to keep the core engaged pretty much constantly is like instant weight loss. Standing taller and prouder makes one look slimmer and more confident. As the core becomes stronger, neck and shoulder tension are released, hip flexors stop over working and the body moves more freely, again giving the impression 46 of a more youthful carriage. Mr. Pilates was adamant that we learn to breathe correctly. He said that “every last atom of old air should be squeezed from the lungs” so that fresh, invigorating oxygen could flood the body by way of the circulatory system, an act that he called “the internal shower.” Exercise helps pump the oxygenated blood all the way through the body to the furthest capillaries, nourishing them and carrying away old debris, and creating an overall sense of wellbeing. Looking for the right place to start Pilates? Pilates of Vero Beach offers high quality training to all levels, from complete beginners to professional athletes, as well as to those suffering from chronic injury. The studio is unique in that all the instructors trained in New York City, the epicenter of the Pilates world, under teachers who studied with Joseph Pilates himself. Their goal is to continue serving patients from their heart with the same management and passion as they have for over eight years. They provide a full range of health and rehabilitation services and programs and plan to expand their facility on the serene seven acres of southern oaks and tropical landscape familiar to us in Florida. Grace Rehabilitation Center of Vero Beach continues their “opendoor” philosophy for families and visitors … and yes the aroma of home-baked cookies is still there! During their National Nursing Home Week festivities, residents created beautiful beaded bracelets that they sell to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Residents and patients had fun with the outdoor “dunk tank”, dunking some of the professional staff who assist them on a daily basis The festivities also included a fashion show where Geraldine Searl, 104 year young resident, shown above with her grand-daughter Jennifer Searl, Grace’s Administrator modeled a blue suit. Grace Rehabilitation Center is located at 2180 10th Avenue, Vero Beach, Florida and you may telephone them at 772.567.5166. 51 PULSE POINTS IRMC Cancer Center and Staff member Win Prestigious Award The Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) recently awarded Indian River Medical Cemter the Jean Byers Award. Each year, FCDS recognizes and presents the prestigious Jean Byers Award for excellence in cancer registration to those facilities that have met or exceeded the national quality standards for timeliness and completeness in cancer reporting. It is given in honor of Jean Anne Byers, who passed away in 1996 following a long career dedicated to promoting oncology research and cancer registry education in Florida. She was the founding member of the Florida Tumor Registrars Association. In addition, FCDS recognizes that outstanding professionals that make this level of quality possible staff the facilities that achieve this quality standard. This year, in order to show their gratitude and appreciation to those individuals, a certificate of appreciation was awarded to Lucille Weems, coordinator, Cancer program. Weems received a certificate from the Florida Department of Health and the Florida Cancer Data System for excellence in cancer reporting for her contributions in helping IRMC achieve the Jean Byers Award. IRMC’s Cancer Registry team is a seven-time recipient of the Jean Byers Award for Excellence. IRMC Psychiatric Hospital Administrative Director Focuses on Quality As Indian River Medical Center’s administrative director of its 46-bed psychiatric hospital - the Behavioral Health Center - Brett Hall has spent the greater part of his career helping people achieve a healthy outlook. Before coming to IRMC recently, Hall was the chief operating officer at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health 52 Hospital in Hoffman Estates, IL. Arriving there in 2005, Hall made a positive impact on both employee culture and patient experience, as well as doubling the profit margin by service line development, process re-design and expense control. Hall received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, his Master of Social Work from Aurora University in Aurora, IL and a Master of Business Administration degree from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. As for his current position, Hall said he is pleased to be a part of the IRMC team in its pursuit of high quality outcomes. “Here at BHC, we remain evidence-based in our treatment modalities, responding to the changing needs of our patients and working to fill identified service needs in our community,” he said. “The BHC team is a wonderfully skilled group of caring clinicians. Their experience and compassion is evident from the first steps into the facility.” VIP America Home Health Care Celebrates 15 YEARS Friends, caregivers, patients and business associates from at least three counties helped VIP America Home Health Care celebrate their 15th anniversary at their Stuart location.
