EXPANSION
LOCAL HEALTH, WELLNESS & FITNESS DIGEST
WWW.HEARTBEATOFTHETREASURECOAST.COM
Sebastian River Medical Center’s
55,000 Square Foot Expansion!
Setting the Standard for Hospital Care, Sebastian River Medical Center’s
Expansion is underway. On Wednesday, July 8, I attended their ground breaking ceremony, but one of their three phases has already been completed. The expansion will
allow SRMC to better meet the healthcare needs of the community all while creating
new job opportunities.
In March 2009 their phase one was completed by opening 14 new private patient
rooms. Amongst many amenities, the rooms boast private restroom access, flat screen
televisions, soothing interior design and comfortable sleeping quarters for a friend or
family member. Many SRMC patients have already enjoyed the luxurious features of
these rooms. “I was thrilled with the room and overall experience,” says Julie Hull.
“Having a comfortable place for me and a family member to stay while I was recovering from surgery was such a godsend we completely forgot we were in a hospital!”
Phase Two of the project extends all the way to the parking lot. In preparation
of their facility’s expansion, they will add 350 spaces to their existing parking area.
These additional spaces will offer patients, visitors and staff improved accessibility to
the expanded facility.
Then in Phase Three will be the 55,000 square-foot facility expansion. Patient
occupancy is expected to become reality in 2011. The new facility will have three levels:
The first floor will house a 16-bed intensive care unit, while the second and third
floors will feature a total of 42 private patient suites. The new building will connect
to their existing facility, so patients, visitors and medical staff will be able to easily
move between departments.
Presently, Sebastian River Medical Center is licensed for 129 beds, but the expansion project will increase that number to 166 beds, 56 of
which will be in private patient rooms. They are pleased
that they will soon be able to offer more patients the opportunity to recover in a whole new setting.

news by going to their website www.sebastianrivermedical.com

4 Fats you need to know
When you hear the word cholesterol, a lot of different ideas may pop into your
head. Some people love to obsess about their total cholesterol number, while
others take comfort in having a healthy good cholesterol score. The reality is that
most doctors today consider 4 numbers when monitoring cholesterol.
The four key blood lipid numbers are:
1. Total cholesterol
2. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
3. High-densoty liprprotein (HDL)
4. Triglycerides (Trigs)
As you may know, cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in your blood, and in some of
the foods you eat. Cholesterol itself is not bad: Your body needs cholesterol to create cell
membranes and hormones, and to protect nerves. Too much cholesterol, however, is a major
risk factor for heart disease.
MINOTTY’S “NEW VISION”
Means NEW LOCATION
Dr. Paul V. Minotty, (just the name alone holds fond memories for over
40,000 patients who he has had the pleasure of helping though his 23
years of practicing in Vero Beach) was energized and enthusiastic when I
spoke to him about his new office at the Kurtell Medical Center, 777
37th St., Suite D103, here in Vero Beach.
“NEW VISION EYE CENTER” means renewed vision towards customized,
personalized eye care for every one of his patients. “The benefits of new
technology, treatments and better results, now means a doctor can spend
more time with their patients, on a one to one basis, getting to know them
on a more personal level,” Minotty said. That is exactly the mission of
“NEW VISION EYE CENTER.” With this new technology and treatments,
the doctor wants to be assured that the direction they take is the one that
best fits the patient. Each patient has different needs and lifestyles; therefore,
by spending quality time with them the doctor can customize the treatment
that best fits into their lives.
Dr. Minotty said he is proud to have former associates Dr. David J. O’Brien,
Dr. Roger J. Meyer and Dr. James E. Copeland, Jr. join him at “NEW
VISION EYE CENTER”. State-Of-The-Art new equipment can be found
in each examination room and as I toured the offices, you could feel the
positive energy and excitement from everyone.
Drs. Minotty, Meyer, O’Brien and Copeland will continue to focus on
Custom Cataract Surgery, Glaucoma Treatment, General Ophthalmic Care,
Macular Degeneration Treatment, Diabetic Eye Care, Laser Vision Correction,
Aesthetics and Eyelid Surgery. Minotty will continue to recruit more physicians
with his philosophy of building lasting strong patient relationships. That
will go a long way in helping their patients.
It’s a new day and as Dr. Minotty told me, “it is a luxury, a privilege to take
care of my patients. The older I get the more I appreciate my
work and all the out-pouring of friendship.”
A legend in eye care, you can find Dr. Minotty, Dr. O’Brien,
Dr. Meyer and Dr. Copeland and “NEW VISION EYE CENTER”
at 777 37th Street, Suite D-103. 772.257.8700, 877.MINOTTY.
Your total cholesterol levels include three components: LDL, HDL, and Trigs.
LDL: This is the so-called bad cholesterol. (Remember that "L" stands for "low," and you
want this lipid level to be a low numbers.) LDL shuttles cholesterol through the bloodstream
from the liver to the rest of the cells in the body.
HDL: This is the good cholesterol. (The "H" stands for "high." The higher this lipid number, generally speaking, the better your heart health.) HDL drives unused cholesterol from
the cells back to the liver, where it's excreted. Any "leftovers" that the HDLs can't handle
stay in the body and start collecting in the blood vessels. So, the higher your HDL level is,
the more excess cholesterol will get disposed of by the liver — leaving less cholesterol to
wreak havoc in your body.

WEIGHT
LOSS
CARE
SEBASTIAN RIVER MEDICAL CENTER
INTRODUCES THEIR COMPREHENSIVE
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
State-of-the-Art Care in Indian River County
Obesity has become one of America’s most serious health problems. In fact,
it’s estimated by the Florida Department of Health that 57 percent of Floridians are
either overweight or obese.
Obesity affects more than just aesthetics. Studies have shown that excess weight
significantly increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.
The solution seems simple enough, lose the excess weight and enjoy better
health and an improved quality of life. But, as we all know, losing weight is anything but easy.
Bariatric (weight loss) surgery may be the answer for those who are struggling
to lose excessive weight. And while gastric bypass is the most widely known
bariatric surgery, newer techniques – such as laparoscopic band (lap band) and
laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (lap sleeve) – are yielding successful results
with fewer short and long term risks.
The Sebastian River Medical Center Comprehensive Weight Management
Program is the first program in Indian River County to offer both the lap band and
lap sleeve procedures. “We are very excited to offer both of these minimally invasive procedures to surgical weight loss patients in Indian River County. As well as
surrounding areas,” say SRMC Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Patrick
Domkowski, MD.
The health benefits associated with bariatric surgery are exponential and
include not only an improvement of self esteem, but a dramatic improvement in
overall health – which is the true benefit. According to Dr. Domkowski, “70 to 80
percent of all surgical weight loss patients will experience a complete recovery from
diabetes and/or high blood pressure all within the first month proceeding surgery”.
If you are prepared for both the physical and mental journeys of weight loss
surgery, contact Sebastian River Medical Centers Comprehensive Weight
Management Program at 772.388.4100. Their team can show you how to achieve
healthy, long-term weight loss.
ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR
WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY?
Dr. Patrick Domkowski can help you achieve
healthy, long-term weight loss.
If you are interested in undergoing a surgical weight loss procedure,
you must meet the following criteria, which has been established by the
National Institutes of Health.
Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater – about 100 pounds
over ideal body weight for men or 80 pounds over ideal body weight for
women; or a BMI of at least 35 and one or more serious health conditions,
such as heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes or severe sleep apnea that would
improve with weight loss.
…Have been overweight for more than five years
…Have tried and failed to lose weight by non-surgical means, such as
diets and exercise.
…Must understand and be committed for the lifestyle changes and
follow up necessary to succeed.

NURSE ON CALL
Caring for you with Dignity and Respect
The benefits of home care go far
beyond keeping someone in their comfort
zone it makes it possible for care recipients to remain at home in a safe environment and in some cases have more independence than they did before. You can
rest assure that their nurses, aides and
other caregivers are experienced and
compassionate and their care teams work
closely with physicians to design individualized treatment plans that are tailored
to meet the precise needs of each patient.
Recognizing that as important as technical skills are to home healthcare, Nurse
On Call is also aware of the need for
empathy and kindness to fulfill their mission to comfort their patients. The staff
is composed of professionals who have
demonstrated the sincere desire to help
people, even in the most adverse conditions. Dignity and respect are the foundations of home healthcare and they are the
guiding values of Nurse on Call and their
respective caregivers.
Nurse On Call believes in the highest
standards and scope of training and certifications. A professional staff of RN’s,
LPN’s, CNA’s, Physical, Occupational
and Speech therapists work cohesively as
a team, round the clock, 24/7; 365 days a
year, with only your individual needs and
requirements in mind.
As a Medicare certified agency, Nurse
On Call has been providing home
healthcare services since 1989. They
take pride in their strong reputation for
furnishing high quality skilled nursing,
rehabilitation and related services that
the patients, their families and physicians
expect and deserve. All services are cov-
ered 100% by Medicare. Consults are
always available for free as so many people having surgery, a recent trip to the ER
or even finding confusion over a new
medication regime do not realize that
Medicare covers services in the privacy of
their own home. Just ask your doctor to
ask for Nurse On Call!
Meet cousins, Jennifer Shaw and Stacy
Ingram, born and raised in West Virginia.
Moving to Florida 10 years ago, they pursued and received their RN degrees and
started their nursing careers with IRMH
in Oncology Medical and Diabetes
Medical. Stacy brought Jennifer to
Nurse on Call , knowing that “NOC has
a family atmosphere where they want
everyone to succeed!” not a corporate
driven agency, but one that concentrates
on the best practice and results for each
patient plan of care.
Both loved their time at the hospital
but said “we wanted to be more involved
in patient care”. They get excited to be a
continuing part of the progress and difference you can make in their patient’s lives
as opposed to a shift or short stay at the
hospital and always wondering how that
special patient that touched them was
doing after their release.
Now they are happy to bring that compassion to Nurse On Call.

Indian River Medical Society... and You!
Royal Palm Introduces Cutting Edge Technology...
Have you ever wondered what functions a local, community Medical Society
performs? Well I did, so I spoke to their
new Executive Director Shelley Stuven,
checked out their website and found that
they offer a vital link between residents,
visitors and local health care.
The Indian River County Medical
Society is a private non-profit professional
association comprised entirely of physicians (MDs and DOs). The society was
founded by eight physicians in 1947 and
today have over 150 members. Its serves
Indian River County as the county component of the Florida Medical Association
and the American Medical Association,
but is administratively and financially
independent.
Their goal is to aid Indian River
County residents and visitors by providing
information to meet your health care
needs. Their members value the patient
/physician relationship and appreciate the
positive role that relationships play in
health care. “PATIENT CARE IS THEIR
HIGHEST PRIORITY”
The Indian River County Medical
Society will provide background information on all their members. If you are new
in the area and seeking a physician, they
will gladly provide you with names and
background information of physicians
who meet your specialty requirements.
Providing physician referral services to
residents and visitors to Indian River
County is just but one of their services.
They partner with various organizations and agencies to develop and
administer programs designed to
heighten awareness about health care
and to improve the quality of care
available in our community. They were
instrumental in launching the Indian
River County School District’s Vision
Screening Program.
Another community element that
many of their members participate in is
the “WE CARE” program.
”We Care”, is a cooperative venture of Indian
River County Medical
Society, the Indian River
County Health Department
and the Indian River
County Hospital Taxing District, provides
free medical treatment to county residents
who might not otherwise receive specialty
medical care.

“IT’S NEVER 2 LATE”
Residents of Royal Palm Healthcare and
Rehabilitation Center are now benefiting from
today’s technology without the intimidation of
the fear of the “computer age”. In the process
of expanding their rehabilitation department
Royal Palm chose to provide cutting-edge
opportunities for lifelong learning and innovative programs for rehabilitative therapy. “It’s
Never 2 Late” is used by speech therapists,
occupational therapists and physical therapists.
All have benefited from incorporating “It’s
Never 2 Late” programs into reimbursable therapeutic exercise and finding creative applications for traditional therapy interventions.
“It’s Never 2 Late” is useful in working with
patients on improving motor control, especially in the upper extremity, improving weakness,
mobility and dexterity in the hands, (choosing
to use the touch screen or different styles of a
mouse and keyboard), balance, problem solving and daily living activities assisting the
occupational therapist…. for the Physical
Therapist interventions include standing-balance, coordination, proprioception (neuromuscular re-education) and range of motion which

COMMUNITY
SERVICES
WORKING FOR YOU…
Indian River County
Council of Community Services
There is a great group of volunteers from nearly 50 community service
providers who meet each month in efforts to allow organizations and individuals
to share information and educate members about services available in the
County. Information relating to health, safety, welfare and education is provided
to the members to help them meet the needs of the community’s residents.
The Council of Community Services also offers scholarships. A professional
skills scholarship is available for those members who wish to further their career
in the field of health, safety, welfare, education or human services. The scholarship
is awarded based on financial need, personal achievement and goal orientation.
The Council also offers charitable contributions to organizations in Indian
River County. You may make a request through any board member.
We meet on the second Thursday of each month for an informal lunch at
Regency Park (910 Regency Square in Vero Beach). Lunch is $10.00 for members
and $15.00 for non members. There are many benefits when you become a

ORTHOPAEDICS
ORTHOPAEDIC CENTER OF
VERO BEACH
Hip Resurfacing: An Alternative to Hip
Replacement
Richard Steinfeld, MD, FAAOS
Richard Steinfeld, MD is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
His orthopaedic practice includes sports injuries, hip, knee, and shoulder reconstruction, general orthopaedics including foot, ankle, hand surgery, and fracture
care. Dr. Steinfeld also specializes in advanced and leading technologies such as
Hip Resurfacing. Resurfacing of the hip joint is a bone preserving approach that
offers younger, active patients the ability to live pain-free and engage in most
activities. The worn surfaces of the hip are resurfaced with a smooth metal cap
and socket without violating the bone normally removed with a hip replacement.
From an activity standpoint, hip resurfacing allows most patients to return to more
active lifestyles including impact activities such as tennis, running, skiing, etc.
Marcus J. Malone, MD, David W. Griffin, MD and Richard Steinfeld, MD.
Orthopaedic Update: Treatment with Total
Knee Replacement
David W. Griffin, MD, FAAOS. AAHKS, FACS
Dr. Griffin is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and
Board Certified by the American Board ofOrthopaedic Surgery.
Continuing to improve pain relief for post op care following total knee replacement is
an ongoing goal of orthopaedic surgeons. A combination of techniques utilizing spinal
anesthetic and femoral nerve block is very safe. The spinal anesthetic allows the patient
to breathe on their own and avoids nausea and vomiting post op. With the addition of
the femoral nerve block this gives excellent relief of pain. Patients now use compression
cold/heat therapy which can be very beneficial for quicker recovery with less pain.
Patient Specific Knees and Gender Specific Knees are new advancements in
joint replacement technology. Patient Specific Knees are generated from MRI and
x-rays to produce exact knee models. These models are used to create patient specific
cutting blocks that the surgeon uses in the operating room. If proper alignment is
achieved, a prosthesis may last 25 years. Gender Specific Knees are total knee
replacement components designed for the male and female anatomy. This allows
better fit and alignment of components.
EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS: A Non-
Surgical Approach To Reduce Back Pain
Marcus J. Malone, MD
Dr. Malone specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is noted
for his work in Chronic Pain Management. As a Physiatrist, Dr. Malone coordinates the long-term rehabilitation process for patients with disabilities and neurological impairments. This specialty is particularly helpful for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and joint replacement post operative care. With his training
focused on managing pain, Dr. Malone performs Epidural Steroid Injections
(ESIs). This process is a common non surgical treatment method used to help
relieve pain in the neck, low back, arm and leg so that patients may resume their
normal activities. Epidural Steroid Injections consists of a long lasting corticosteroid and an anesthetic. ESIs have proven to be helpful and are commonly used
in combination with a Physical Therapy program.

CITYFIT Outdoor Fitness

Party in
the Park
1st Fridays at Riverside Park
The Zumba Party – Education
Foundation Fundraiser was developed by
Jill Price owner of CityFit Outdoor Fitness
Camp. Price gathered her friends to offer
a monthly fundraiser that combines
health and wellness with the Zumba beat.
Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms
and easy to follow moves to create a
dynamic fitness program. The fitness
workout features salsa, merengue,
cumbia, raggaeton rhythms and more.
The CityFit ZUMBA Parties are
held every 1st Friday at Riverside Park in
Vero from 6-7:30 p.m. In parts of South
America hundreds come out to ZUMBA
events held at local community parks.
“We hope to do the same,” Price says,
owner of CityFit. “You can’t believe the
fun and positive energy that evolves from
doing ZUMBA fitness dancing with hundreds of people from all over the community. There is nothing like it.”
As always, Price believes in giving
back to the community which is allowing
30
her to fulfill her dreams so CityFit is
donating a percentage of all proceeds to
The Education Foundation of IRC, Inc.
“They deserve the money we’ll raise. All
the ZUMBA Party in the Park instructors
are working in the schools conducting
ZUMBA classes on-site for the district
employees so they feel a certain affinity
toward the School District which has
provided this unique opportunity.
“CityFit wants to thank the Education
Foundation for being such a huge supporter of the students and teachers who
are working so hard,” states Price.
The cost to get in is $7 per individual,
$12 couple or $25 for a group of 5. The
more the merrier! ZUMBA is for all ages,
all fitness levels and men, women and children alike! Please come out and support
your own health and give a little to The
Education Foundation while you’re at it!
Please contact Jill Price at (772) 7137938 or [email protected] about the

The Heart Center at Indian River Medical Center
Ranked As One of The Top Heart Centers in
America by Society Of Thoracic Surgeons
The nation’s leading cardiothoracic
surgery organization—the Society of
Thoracic Surgeons (STS)—has awarded
its highest quality achievement rating to
The Heart Center at Indian River
Medical Center, recognizing it as one of
the top heart centers in the United States.
More than 900 hospitals, including
America’s leading academic medical centers and most respected cardiac hospitals,
voluntarily submit their cardiac surgery
outcomes for analysis. For 2008, The
Heart Center ranked among only 15 percent of programs nationwide to receive
STS’s highest rating of “Three-Stars.”
“This validates our heart surgery
program as one of the best in the United
States,” said Jeffrey L. Susi, IRMC
president and CEO. “It is testimony to
the skill and leadership of cardiovascular
and thoracic surgeons Drs. Cary Stowe
and Mark Malias, the expertise of
cardiac anesthesiologists Drs. John
Lindenthal and Geoffrey Wolf, and to
the entire Heart Center team’s passion
for and commitment to providing top

The STS database, which includes
more than 3.5 million patient records,
measures the performance of coronary

four areas: surgical quality, appropriate

BHC Hosts Popular Seminar on Baker Act
Mariamma Pyngolil,
MSN, R.N.
The Behavioral Health Center at
Indian River Medical Center hosted its
first Baker Act in-service training session
42
for professionals working with seniors
in assisted living facilities and nursing
homes.
Mariamma Pyngolil, MSN, R.N.,
Patient Care director at BHC, presented
with the assistance of adult mental health
specialist Carol Eldeen-Todesco. The inservice was attended by 49 individuals
representing area nursing homes, home
care agencies, assisted living facilities,
VNA Hospice, Indian River County
Elder Affairs, Indian River County
Veteran's Council, IRCSO Victim
Assistance Program, Sun Up, Senior
Resource Center, and others working
with the senior population.
The intent of the program was to provide information and education to those
individuals who may be working with a
resident or client who is Baker-Acted.
The Baker Act allows for involuntary
examination of an individual and can be
initiated by judges, law enforcement
officials, or mental health professionals.
There must be evidence that the person
has a mental illness (as defined in the
Baker Act) and is a harm to self, harm to
others, or self neglectful. IRMC is the
only Baker Act receiving facility in
Indian River County.
The Florida law is very specific on the
rights of the patient as well as the procedures that must be followed with a resident in a nursing home or assisted living
facility.
“The participants reported that they
gained a lot of knowledge and insight on
the Baker Act. It was a total success!” said
Dawn Redstone, community educator,
BHC.
At the conclusion of the presentation,
the participants indicated that they are
very interested in attending other such
presentations and working towards networking opportunities, Dawn said. BHC
will be setting up subsequent educational
offerings on a quarterly basis.
Audibel’s New Anthem™

includes The Virtual Cycle where residents can “cycle”-through the computers on-screen forests,
mountainous paths or lakeside trails.…and the speech therapist can use it to work on the issues
such as cognition aphasia (digital photographs can display family members, friends or pets, making it more meaningful to the individual) and safety issues.
The professional Rehabilitative staff customizes “It’s Never 2 Late” to each resident and the
system is mobile so if a resident does not wish to leave their room, “It’s Never 2 Late” can be
brought to them.
The system is so universal, residents can send and receive e-mail and video mail, they can play
games, work puzzles, virtually travel to numerous countries, for history enthusiasts it contains history from the 15th century to today. It is basically a WINDOW TO THE WORLD for those who
are not able to do the things today that at one time they enjoyed.
Stop by and see first hand 1 of the 170 units nationwide at Royal Palm Skilled Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center, “Reaching Everyone Through Technology” 2180 10th Avenue in Vero
Beach. Telephone them at 772.567.5166 Serving Vero for over 40 years.
