Letter from the President
Although I have been busy with the CGSB
project, I don’t have much to report, except
to say that we are working on the
framework section. When we came to a
consensus of the issues at hand and
started to email back and forth with the
workgroup, we quickly realized there were
just too many emails. To remedy this, we are working with the help of
some volunteers on a site that we can all log on to and we can
comment as we like without tying up all of our email accounts. We are
also looking for a volunteer to do a few drawings. This would only be
a few and not a big commitment and the help would be greatly
appreciated. To sum it up so far, the whole process has taken longer
than we expected but we are getting there.
On another note, as President, I am asking our members for ideas,
concerns, and some general thoughts on making a strategic plan to
guide the association. We would like to have as much input
from members as possible, as it is only through frank and
open discussion that the association can evolve and offer
members what they want and need. This should centre round
our expectations of the Chapters and the CFIA Board,
membership dues, as well as wants and needs of the
members. Everything on your minds, big or small, needs to be
brought forward for discussion. Now is the time to give your
input and help initiate the changes you would like to see.
I wish you all a busy and successful summer.

Accountability Buddies
Since building and running your own business can be challenging,
some people find that having a person as an accountability partner
produces a win-win situation. Ideally, the partner should have
different skills and be from a different sector.
One suggestion I have read about is to email your accountability
partner (who should not be a friend but rather someone from a
chamber of commerce or service club) on Monday morning with your
weekly goals. On Friday, meet with your partner and report on
whether your goals were met or not. If either did not meet a goal, the
3
two brains are better than one at figuring out the why’s of
the failure and how to overcome it. Marketing ideas and
business strategies are also exchanged and being
accountable, to someone other than yourself, can be really
motivating. After all, nobody wants to let themselves
down in front of a stranger. On that note, if you find
yourself incompatible with your buddy, fire him/her and
find a new one. This is meant to be a positive experience.
Fence Folks - Clôtures Directes
Since 1992, quality of service is our priority.
Our fences are a sure value...
MANUFACTURER OF FENCING PRODUCTS
Clôtures Directes Inc. takes the road to St. Catherine in the year
1992. It was in 2001 that Robert Dicerni, at that time a
businessman in the area, purchased a building and moved into
the Châteauguay region. Over the years, the company
diversifies with its installer expertise on residential projects,
commercial and industrial and complements its services by
starting its manufacturing activities.
Today Clotures Directes Inc. has a production capacity to grow
significantly, and penetrate the US market eventually. Clotures
Directes is a family business in which the children of Robert
Dicerni climbed the ladder one by one. Lucas Dicerni is now
director of the factory while Dino Dicerni is sales manager.
Clotures Directes Inc. employs around 25 people and its sales
are spread across Eastern Canada.
In 2005, the company develops a high-performance extrusion
line from the United States. The equipment is manufactured on
site with the help of the company's engineer. The machine is
very impressive, both in terms of its timeliness and the quality
of its output. To support its growth, the company continues to
invest significantly in its equipment, with six weaving machine
between 2006 and 2013 and machinery to automate the
production of its residential and commercial gates with scrolls.
In 2013, the company invests in equipment allowing it to
produce its own two part gates. In 2014, the company acquires
a new machine to produce ties with hook or
no hook (aluminum or vinyl). In 2015, the
company made a major investment in a new
division, Dicard Painting Inc, born of an
association between the DIcerni-family and
General Manager of Direct Fence Mathieu
CARD-inal. The company will act as a
subcontractor specializing in electrostatic
powder coating paint for metal or aluminum
parts, a paint line accommodating parts of 3’
large x 6’ high x 24 'foot long, a "heavyduty" conveyor that can handle parts of more
than 800 lbs and 5 stage-washer technology
allowing optimal pretreatment for aluminum
products meeting the specifications of the
2604 AMMA standard.
ON THE PATH OF
EXPANSION
Given the steady growth of the
company, Direct Fences Inc.
made four enlargements of the
plant since 2001. Our sites offer
200,000 square feet of space that
include warehouse and corporate
offices.
With the acquisition of all its
equipment and its decision to
invest in the plant, the company
chooses its path: expansion.
DRIVING FORWARD
Today Clotures Directes Inc.
is considered the reference

Editor’s Note
IN THIS ISSUE
Our fence season is finally well underway
after a long cold winter. CFIA has elected a
couple of new directors to the National
Board - Tony Marra (Roma Fence) as
Secretary and Joanne Lobosco (Fencast
Industries) as a director. Thanks so much
for taking on these responsibilities for our
organization.
New government regulations for non-profit associations, which came
into effect in 2014, forced CFIA to rewrite all bylaws to conform to the
new requirements or lose its charter to operate. The new regulations
also caused changes to our fiscal year-end and also to the terms for
starting dates for new directors. The new term for directors now will
start at the AGM following elections. Cathy Hofstetter (McGowan
Fence) headed this time consuming task along with support from
Pres. Martin Mccooey and past treasurer Mauro DiTullio. We all really
appreciate your efforts to enable CFIA to comply with the current
requirements.
President Martin Mccooey is still working diligently guiding the new
CGSB chain-link fence standards to incorporate new modern
materials used by the industry. Trying to get a consensus from all
suppliers has taken a lot of patience to come to an agreeable solution
with the industry at large.
The Ontario Chapter has selected a new board of directors with
Christina Marra (Acculink) as President. In the near future, this
chapter is planning several events which you should plan to attend .
You never know who you meet or what you might learn. It’s all about
the networking!
Dog Story from Reggie
Mart Prost, Editor
As a butcher is shooing a dog from his shop,he sees a $10.00 bill and a
note in his mouth, reading: "5 lamb chops, please."
Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's
mouth,and quickly closes the shop.
He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light, look both
ways, and trots across the road to a bus-stop.
The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench.
When a bus arrives, he walks around to the front and looks at the
number, then boards the bus.

He does this again and again. No answer.
The butcher follows, dumbstruck.
So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his
head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door.
As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery.
A big guy opens it and starts cursing and shouting at the dog.
After awhile he stands on his back paws to push the "stop" bell, then the
butcher follows him off.
The butcher runs up and screams at the guy: "What the hell
are you doing?
The dog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the step.
This dog's a genius!"
He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself Whap!- against the door.
The owner responds, "Genius, my ass.........
It's the second time this week he's forgotten his key!"

Publisher’s Note
An article in the Costco Magazine caught
my eye. The subject was about business
growth – is it necessary?
When it means expansion is it necessary for
survival or might it mean the downfall of
the business, especially if poorly managed.
When it means change or rejuvenation, yes it is necessary as no
business can remain static.
Asking yourself the following questions about the type of growth you
want to see in your business can be helpful: are you comfortable with
the size of your business right now and just want to develop in other
areas or do you want to grow into a larger operation. Where are you
now, where do you want to go and how are you going to get there are
also good questions. Your answers need a close examination of your
present situation and the reason you want to grow.
As in life, vision and planning are necessary to set and achieve goals
in our businesses. If we just drift, we have no idea where we are going
or where we will end up.
Wishing you growth and opportunities in the season ahead!

How to Properly Meg an Inductance Loop
These easy to follow instructions will help you effectively test
inductance loops.
Step 1: Do you have a Megohmmeter or a
Multimeter?
To properly “meg” a loop we must use a megohmmeter and not a
multimeter. Because multimeters have an “ohm” setting many
installers falsely believe that a multimeter can be used to “meg a
loop”. Here is a quick look at how megohmmeters and multimeters
differ:
Multimeters generally measure Continuity, Resistance, and
Voltage. (For loops multimeters will check continuity, but will not tell
you if the loop is shorting to ground.)
Megohmmeters are Insulation Testers. (Megohmmeters will tell
you if the loop wire’s insulation has been nicked as is causing a short
to ground.)
46-2000 - Good Loop
If you are using a digital meter: (They are a bit more
difficult to read)
You will likely have to read the instructions that came with your
meter to make sure you are interpreting the results correctly.
Some digital meters give number readings similar to the analog
meters, and in that case use the chart above. Some meters have
lights that will tell you if the loop is good, questionable, or bad.
Now that you have obtained an initial reading, take a hose water
down the area of the loop and lead-in. Take another reading,
often times shorted loops will only read “bad” when water is
present in the groove. Is your second reading significantly lower
than your first reading? This indicates that you likely have a nick
in the insulation.
In Summary: It is important to remember that only one of the
megohmmeters clip leads will be connected to the loop, the
other must be connected to ground.
We know that it is not very intuitive since you have 2 clip leads
from the megohmeter and 2 lead-in wires on the loop, many
installers will clip both leads to the loop. If an installer does
connect both clip leads to the loop the megohmmeter will
incorrectly show that the loop is bad or failing. (Go ahead and
test it yourself, It won't damage the loop.)
We want to prevent installers from accidently replacing good
loops by making such a small mistake while testing.
Brian Dickson is the General Manager of BD Loops, a designer of preformed
direct burial and saw-cut inductance loops for the gate, door, and parking
industries. Brian holds certification as a CAGOI and is an IDEA Sanctioned
trainer. With over 14 years in business the quality of BD Loops is
unparalleled. BD Loops products are available through over 350
distributors in the U.S. and Canada. BD Loops offers 46 standard preformed
loop sizes, all standard and custom loop sizes are ready to be shipped the
same day. The company has several letters of recommendation testifying
their professionalism and design, and is a member of the following
associations: AFA, IDA, NAFCA, NOMMA, IPI, CODA, and IMSA. Visit
www.bdloops.com and use the distributor locator to find a distributor near
you. If you would like to speak to Brian Dickson please call BD Loops at
714-890-1604.
Step 2: Okay I have a Megohmmeter, now what?
Fantastic! Here are step by step instructions on how to test a loop
using a megohmmeter. What you really want to look out for here is
making sure that you’re attaching one of the megohmmeter’s clip to
an earth ground (such as an operator chassis) and the other clip to
one of the loop’s lead-in wires.
Step 1: Remove the loop lead from the
operator or detector.
Step 2: Attach one of the megohmmeter's
clips (if your megohmmeter has clips) to an
earth ground such as the operator frame or a ToughStrand 12.5 ga. High12" screwdriver driven into the ground. (You
can pour water on the screwdriver to help Tensile Fence with a Fixed Knot,
ground the connection.)

but if you want to protect anything that needs a password, it is

better to do it at home. If you absolutely have to do internet
banking while travelling, use Hotspot Shield to protect your
identity, although even this is not 100 per cent safe, and
monitor your statements to alert you to any suspicious
activity.
Two-Step Authentication: Many banks and other
companies offer the option of a two step authentication
when signing into your account. This serves

security measure to protect your online accounts from being
compromised. This involves your bank sending you a code to
be used in addition to your normal password.

REGGIE’S CORNER
Thoughts
for the Day
The real art of
conversation is not only
to say the right thing at
the right time,
but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the
tempting moment.
Important Facts to Remember as You Grow Older:
• Death is the number 1 killer in the world.
• Life is sexually transmitted.
• Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one
can die.
• Give a person a fish and you can feed them for the day. Teach a
person to use the Internet and they won’t bother you for weeks,
months, maybe years.
• Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the
hospital, dying of nothing.
• All of us can take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention
to criticism.
• In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the
world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.
• Don’t worry about old age; it doesn’t last that long.
The easiest way to find something
lost around the house is to buy a
replacement.
He who hesitates is probably right.
Did you ever notice: The Roman
Numerals for forty (40) are ' XL.'
If you think there is good in everybody,
then you haven't met everybody.
If you can smile when things go
wrong, you probably have someone
in mind to blame.
A penny saved is a government
oversight.
There's always a lot to be thankful for
if you take time to look for it..
For example I am sitting here thinking
how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt .
Ageing: eventually you will reach a
point when you stop lying about your
age and start bragging about it.
Reggie does.
The older we get, the fewer things
seem worth waiting in line for.
You know you are getting old when
everything either dries up or leaks.
First you forget names, then you
forget faces. Then you forget to pull
up your zipper.
It's worse when you forget to pull it
down.
Long ago when men cursed and beat
the ground with sticks,
it was called witchcraft.
Today, it's called golf.

BD-LG (Loop Goop) is now available.
BD Loops new polyurethane saw-cut loop
sealant with a flat 3/16” sealant tip is now
available. BD-LG is available in both Gray and
Black. Each tube is filled with 30 fl oz of sealant
that provides a water-tight seal when installing
loops. BD-LG works great with both asphalt and
concrete applications.
There are many advantages to
polyurethane loop sealant including:
www.bdloops.com and click on ‘Distributor
Locator’.
Everything from the design of the tube and
sealant tip, to the printing on the tube is
designed with installers in mind. Use the
coverage charts to determine how many tubes
or cases your installation will require.
BD-LG
Save time and money with Loop Goop. Each
tube of Loop Goop comes with a flat 3/16”
sealant tip that allows installers to fill the
groove from the bottom up in just one pass if
used with a BD Loops preformed 3/16” Saw-Cut
Loop. Applying loop sealant has never been
easier, no more waiting around to apply a
second coat of sealant.
• 30oz Tubes-most rubber and water based
products come in 28oz tubes. BD-LG has
nearly 7% more sealant.
• Does not shrink or crack – BD-LG does not
have an evaporation cure like most other
sealants.
• Does not conduct electricity – Water based
sealants can facilitate shorts to ground.
To get the most out of your tube of Loop Goop,
use with a 3/16” wide saw blade and BD Loops
preformed 3/16” Saw-Cut Loops. BD Loops 14”
Diameter 3/16” wide Saw Blades come with a
depth mark that indicates both 1 ¼” and 1 ½”
cutting depths to help the installer quickly set
the depth of their cut.
• Has a low viscosity (flows easily) is easier on
your hand, and is self leveling.
• Can be cleaned up with rubbing alcohol.
BD Loops is thrilled to be able to offer such a high
quality loop sealant. BD-LG is available by the
tube or the case (12 tubes). BD Loop Goop can be purchased
through any BD Loops distributor, to find a distributor near you visit
