Connie “Hurricane Dancer” was the PHiP Regional Communicator Chair. She was an active member of the Central Texas Parrot Head Club, as well as great leader, mentor and communicator. Some of you may have met Connie at events across the nation and would be able to attest to how she earned her nickname. She was a powerful force in the mission to “Party with a Purpose”. We will miss a woman who could listen, give an opinion and really get the job done. Our sympathy goes out to her family, her PHiP and Central Texas Phamily and all of those who came in contact with her. Volunteering to participate in the Sunday Brunch venue at Ronald McDonald House (RMH) was a no brainer...after all we do "Party with a Purpose". We had a great group of Parrot Heads participating ...Waneta Goodwin, John Libhart, Dolly and Larry Kmetz, Captain Shauna and us. Waneta and I visited the RMH prior to our scheduled date for a tour and to meet the coordinator Maria. We were very impressed with the facilities and the amount of volunteers that help support this program. They have over 200 volunteers from the community that do what is needed such as cleaning, manning the desk, cooking and other duties as required. The pantry, from which you can pull what you need to supplement your menu, is quite impressive; again all donated items from various organizations. You decide what you will serve. Sunday brunch can be served anytime after 9am and the meal must be prepared on site or catered by a restaurant. Our menu was simple and easy to prepare - scrambled eggs with/without cheese, breakfast sausage patties, fruit salad, pancakes, chicken Caesar salad and juice. Because of the items we had from the pantry, our out- of- pocket expense was about $10 each. We all arrived around 8am and were done by 1015. The meal is left out for those that "sleep in" and the staff will put the extras away. I found it very hard to believe, but one of the staff at RMH, not knowing what Parrot Heads are, asked. When I told her what we do and that we follow Jimmy Buffett and trop rock music, she asked “Who is Jimmy Buffett?” So, Jimmy, here is your challenge - get your message out to the next generation of Parrot Heads! The people staying at RMH were very appreciative of the home cooked meal and we had a waiting line for the food. And, of course, we brought our "Parrot Head" gear - leis, tropical shirts and music! Mary and Andy Chopak FIRST MATE’S WATCH Volume 18, Issue 5 Page 2 Tequila Times As Captain Shauna Mañana is out of town during the publication of the Tequila Times, your faithful First Mate is filling the gap and I have lots of news! We’ve been shuttling cargo to many ports. The Parrot Heads in Amish Paradise continue to collect kitty litter, peanut butter and cleaning supplies for the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area. We also plunder your closets for donation to the United Methodist Children’s Home. After the May meeting, I hauled the cargo of four cases of non-perishables to the Lebanon County Christian Ministry’s Food Bank. This charity serves many of the homeless and needy residents of Lebanon County, including kids heading into summer break with little food at home. They give us a hearty “thank you” for the contributions to their cargo hold! Always remember to mark down your donations on the social sign in sheet. You earn Parrot Points for every donation! We used our bounty to serve a delicious brunch at Ronald McDonald House (see article). And your Executive Board is investigating new places for casual gatherings—happy hour, anyone? Coming up on Saturday, July 25th, we have the 3rd annual Pool Party at Dixie and John Winters’ lovely home! Orchard is just a quick trip down 72 from the Turnpike or 322. Dixie is a most gracious hostess and John’s hand-squeezed margaritas are award-winning! See Shark Bites for more info. Road Clean-Up is the week before on July 18. We get to cleaning up at 10am, meeting at the Exelon Welcome Center on 441, across from Three Mile Island. Last clean up brought out some new faces who didn’t let the words “clean up” scare them! The post clean up party at the Blue Room is always an adventure! Save that date to help keep ‘Merica beautiful. Also in July, Scott Kirby graces Central PA with his presence on the 16th at Knicker’s Pub, Heritage Hills Golf Resort. He never disappoints with a performance overlooking the fairways and fountain. Get there early for a seat. Scott warms up the guitar at 7pm. In August, we have two phenomenal events—The Jakie Invitational, a putt-putt tournament benefitting the Wounded Warriors of Pennsylvania and Music on the Mountain, hosting John Frinzi and special guest, Emily Randle. We don’t get John to come to Central Pa very often, so let’s show him some love. Read more about both events in Shark Bites and/or on the flyers available at this month’s social. If you’re headed out to Pittsburgh for the Buffett show, the Steel City Fins have invited us to their preparty the day before. John McDonald and the Mango Men will be the musical guests. Also in July, our neighbors, Berks County Parrot Head Club, invites us to their Parrot Daze event on July 11. Phew! Is that enough good stuff for you? Wishing you all fair winds and a following seas! Volume 18, Issue 5 Page 3 Tequila Times Sailing with "Boat Drinks Bacchanal" Kurt and I went on a little sail down to Dewey Beach to party with the Delaware Sea Shore Parrot Heads. Their party with a purpose was to raise money for the SPCA. These Parrot Heads really know how to throw a party!! We were welcomed from the first person we met. I was even offered a bottle of water while I was standing in line to get in due to my nursing a head ache. The price to get in was $50.00 for music and all you could drink for 5 hours. The venue was on the Bay side overlooking the boat docks and the water. There was sand between our toes, sunshine on our faces, a pig on a spit, and MANY boat drinks in our hands. The Band was Jimmy and the Parrots and of course they are worth the fifty dollar ticket alone! We danced, sang, and laughed for hours. I met a lot of other members from other Parrot head groups while searching for Jack's Backs. Next year I hope to find more Amish phriends at this venue it was a great time for a great cause. My only regret is having to wait a year for this event to happen again. The Wyndham hotel in Philadelphia- Mount Laurel, NJ became the Parrothead capital of the east coast. Hundreds of Hawaiian clad Jimmy Buffett fans set out to Party with a Purpose (and did we ever). The over $16,000 raised was donated to the ALS Assoc, Veterans Making a Difference, Philadoptables, Camp No Worries, Wounded Warrior Project and Marine Mammal Stranding Center. The music talent for this first ever Phlocking was amazing! Headliners Jim Morris and the Big Bamboo Band, and the Boat Drunks rocked the ballroom Friday and Saturday night. Other musical acts were Jimmy and the Parrots Trio, Will Kimbrough, Tropical Soul, Mark James, Gary PhillipS, Nicky Fabbz, Latitude 24, Dead Jimmy with Dave Hartranft, John McGarvey, Toes in the Sand, Jersey John. This music lineup was just crazy. From Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon the music just kept going. Not only was there music, but raffles, 50/50, a signed Jimmy Buffett guitar, and a Pirate/Wench contest. Now I have been to a lot of these events and I’ve never seen so many good raffle baskets. I think in total there were over 100 baskets and cool items. For the first year, what I saw was everything running smoothly. 8 Amish joined in the fun, dancing, drinking and reconnecting with friends. Lynn and Yogi’s room turned into the hospitality suite. We did it Weiner style, with crock pots and great food. For years, New England has had their Parrothead convention, and Stars Fell on Alabama in the south, there are Fin’s to the West and Stars on the Water. All of these have become great weekend Parrothead events raising thousands of dollars for charity. Well I’m here to say there is a new event on the block and it is ONE PARTICULAR PHLOCKING. The Krieger’s will be back at OPP next year. Hope more Amish will hitch up your buggies and join us! Event sponsors: Phlock of South Jersey, Berks County PHC, Coastal Jersey PHC, Jersey Shore PHC, Philly Phinz PHC and the Pirates in Paradise PHC. Volume 18, Issue 5 Page 8 Tequila Times Jimmy Returns to New Orleans The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is a once in a life-time event. If you like music and an eclectic groups of musicians, you have to attend at least once in your life. John and I have been their four times, but Jimmy Buffett never played then. Last year we were there, and Jimmy surprised concert goers by joining another performer on stage. John and I did not see him because John was back in the room with food poisoning---bad, bad raw oyster. At long last, Jimmy Buffett finally returned to New Orleans to headline the Jazz and Heritage Festival on Sunday, April 26. Among 200,000 plus people, five Amish Parrotheads made their pilgrimage to see their favorite Trop Rock singer. Bob and TC Roscoe, Alana Lambert, and John and Dixie Winters braved the rain and storm the previous day and tried to avoid the mud pits as they watched the crowds flocking to the “big stage.” It was hard to image that many people watching Jimmy since at the exact same time, Pitbull and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett were performing on near-by stages. By far, Jimmy had the biggest and loudest crowd. Come on, can you image anyone going to the Pitbull stage wearing feathers and coconuts bras? All-in-all, it was a wonderful experience. Jimmy was great. As he does at most concerts, time and again during his two-hour performance, Jimmy delighted the crowd with references to sweet NOLA, where he worked the bars and crowds in the French Quarter 40 years ago. Singing his signature song, Margaritaville, Jimmy sang, "Nibbling on sponge cake," watching the sun bake, all of you at Jazz Fest covered in mud. Strumming my six-string, on my front porch swing, we're looking a lot better than when there's a flood." We will probably return to New Orleans. It’s my favorite city. With a nod to Lyle Lovett and his talent Claiming to be “just a bar as a songwriter, Buffett gave an upbeat rendition of “If I band” Buffett’s well known hits had a Boat” saying he wished he’d written the song. dominate the set list. Taking us down to the tropics with “Off to See the LizThe Parrot Head anthem, ard”Jimmy gave Austin a new geographical definition as “Margaritaville” has a special the “northern edge of the Caribbean.” Might be stretching place in the hearts of our local it but for this one night, I believe it! We are treated to one of my favorite songs, “Blue Guitar” written by Peter Parrot Heads. We call Austin Mayer. the “Heart of Margaritaville” because it really began here For my third small Jimmy Buffett concert (all within the back in the 70’s. Jimmy explains he came to Austin by an greater Austin area) it’s thrilling to experience front row invitation from Jerry Jeff Walk- again. It’s a different vibe when he nods your way (maybe to you or maybe it’s the guy next to you) but it er and although things have changed “it’s still one of the greatest cities on planet earth feels personal as though we’re both having fun together. And honestly, I worry he won’t be touring much longer mostly because music is part of the soul of the city.” He still remembers sitting in Austin and writing his most and I’m going to miss these unique moments. Yes it did. Finally, Jimmy closes with “Tin Cup Chalice,” a wishful Buffett included “Fins”, “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, song of islands, beer and oysters. As if on autopilot, we “Son of a Son of a Sailor” and “Come Monday” for the raise our glasses, “With a tin cup for a chalice. Fill it up standard songs-you-know-by-heart. When introducing Mac McAnally as filling in for Alan Jackson’s part of “It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere,” Mac tells us he will be this evenings “generic stand-in.” With Mac’s rich voice, I’m always happy he’s the stand-in guy. Fins Up Parrot Heads! Bantering with us in the crowd, Jimmy hit the nail on the head when he asked why there isn’t a direct flight between Key West and Austin. Something I ask myself often. As Jimmy said “we can keep hoping and wishing” but since Southwest stopped flying to Key West a few years ago, I don’t think it’ll do us much good. During one of the best mainstay songs of the night, “Pirate Looks at 40″ the crowd sing-a-long sounds pretty dang good for 2500 people harmonizing (if you were there you might see yourself in the crowd): Buffett’s set list is shorter, most likely due to noise curfew on a Tuesday night in downtown Austin. This cut out a number of songs from the Workin n’ Playin’ set list, but with good red wine and we’ll be chewing on a honeysuckle vine.” I’m hoping and wishing we get to do it all over again next year. (Article reprinted with permission from www.troprockin.com) Volume 18, Issue 5 Page 10 Tequila Times ZAC BROWN BAND FROM THE PIT It’s been said that Zac Brown is poised to take over for Jimmy Buffett when he retires. While Zac plays some amazing beach songs, he certainly isn’t limiting himself to trop rock, or any genre at all! Though he sells CDs in the country section of the store, his playlist has as much rock as country and he’s even getting a little funky on us now, with the addition of a horn section. This concert had plenty of the music from the new “Jekyll and Hyde” CD, as well as some thoroughly surprising covers. Seriously, Zac Brown Band is turning into today’s Grateful Dead when it comes to fantastic cover songs. I couldn’t believe that I was hearing the opening to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”, but when they took it straight into “Devil Went Down To Georgia”? I mean…WOW! Searing violin playing from Jimmy DiMartini was spot on. Another shocker from a “country” group was the cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, complete with video impersonation, using the band members’ faces. (Does anyone remember the original video for “Bohemian Rhapsody”?) Other covers—“Into the Mystic” (Van Morrison), “Let it Be” (if you don’t know, you’re just wrong), and “Can’t You See” (Marshall Tucker Band). The pit crowd wasn’t quite as friendly in Pittsburgh (nee, Burgettstown) as they were last year in Hershey, with a scuffle breaking out and causing the ejection of several over lubricated guys, but you couldn’t beat the size of their pit. Being smaller than Hershey’s, everyone was close to the stage. I don’t have the set list order correct, but I think I remember almost everything that was played. I was too busy just enjoying possibly the best concert I’ve ever seen/heard! So, in the interest of space and time, here’s what they played— Homegrown Kashmir Devil Went Down to Georgia Let it Be Bohemian Rhapsody Loving You Easy Beautiful Drug Day of the Dead (a venture in to funkiness!) Castaway (the new Trop Rock) Loved Zac’s tiered stage set up and the new horn section!
