Thank you, Good Stewards!
Each time I turn around here someone is reaching out to help by donating their time, talent,
or treasure. That’s the sign of a healthy community. It’s clear that you embrace the ethic
of stewardship and gladly sacrifice for the good of our parish and school communities and
beyond. We will soon begin our fall stewardship renewal process, a time where you can
prayerfully discern how our Lord is calling you to “give back:” through volunteering your time in serving in
one or more parish ministries, and by making a financial pledge for this Fiscal Year. More to come.
“Painting in the rain!” O.K, maybe we were not “singing in the rain,” but we did knock out a lot of painting! Last weekend we had 29 volunteers who showed up to help in our “parish clean up day.” And is was
pouring rain! We managed to get the church foyer, downstairs nursery and school entrance all painted in less
than 3 hours! Under the direction of Terry Tutor, the following good stewards gave generously of their time
to help improve the environment of our church and school: Nelson Isada. Orlando Paraoan, Anita Matignas,
Marie Husa, Rafael Apostol, Anna Berry, Rebecca Berry, Karen Wolski, Mike Wolski, Tiffer Wolski, Nicholas Wolski, Sarah Wolski, Matt Walsh, Kevin Dunlevy, Elise Zajicek, Pat Carnevale, Matthew Gingrich,
Bob McMorrow, Sr., Ralph Feriani, Jim Seeberger, Alison Walsh, James Kvidera, David Mitchell, Jeff Bouton, Tom Blake, Bernie Freeman, Page Hafele, Fr. Michael, and yours truly. This weekend we may have another group of volunteers from our Samoan community and beyond. More names to follow next weekend.
Well done, faithful stewards!
Welcome, Katherine Mitchell! With sincere thanks to all applicants who submitted packages for the open
position of Administrative Assistant, I am please to announce that we have hired parishioner Katherine (“K”)
Mitchell! A long-time parishioner, “K” knows our parish community well. She will begin on September1st.
We will find a suitable way to say “thank you” to Sandra Singer, currently serving in this position and leaving it in order to dedicate more time to family needs. “Welcome, K!”
Junior High Retreat! Our new youth and young adult minister, Elise, has hit the ground running! She facilitated the Junior High Retreat this past Friday and Saturday. Stay tuned for many more youth ministry activities as we gear up for the coming year.
Fr. Steven Moore. Former Saint Benedict Pastor Fr. Steven Moore has publicly announced that he is undergoing cancer treatment in Seattle and expects to be away from Alaska for about two months. Let us please
join together in prayer and solidarity during this difficult time for Fr. Moore.
Thanks! Fr. Tom

The Ministry we celebrate this month is our mass coordinators. We have designated Coordinators for each
Mass and their service is invaluable in many ways that is not always seen when you come to worship.
They make sure liturgical items are set up for Mass and check that all of the Liturgical Ministers (Lectors,
Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers) for that Mass are present. Sometimes they need to find replacements for
someone who is unable to be at their assigned Mass. They also make sure
that the Church is cleaned up from the previous Mass so that things are
tidy when you arrive and clean up after Mass
has ended. They also serve as Liturgical
Ministers at the Mass they serve and fill in
where needed.
Please give a round of applause to our Mass
Coordinators!
Hello everyone, this week we introduce you to our Stewards of the week, Matt and Alison Walsh, with their
beautiful daughter Caroline!
Anchorage has always been home for Alison, but Matt moved to here when they married in 2011, he is originally from Milwaukee, WI. They have enjoyed growing as a young couple and starting their family in such a
loving community. Matt and Alison joined St. Benedict’s in 2012.
Matt has serves as an usher and Alison as a reader during Saturday evening Mass since 2013. Two years
ago, they were invited to participate in the Super Sunday Catechesis as the kindergarten teachers. It is a
ministry they have greatly enjoyed and are so loved by
the students. They feel so blessed to be able to interact
with of the youngest members of our church and have
learned much from them. They also participate in Casti Conubi and the Second Course ministries and have
feel thankful for ways to grow in their faith.
Matt and Alison can often be found during the summer
playing in their garden amongst the potatoes and zucchini, or at a dinner with friends and family followed
by a rousing game of cards. Honestly though most of
their time is spent watching their beautiful, almost 1
year old daughter, Caroline, as she learns to walk and
discovers the world.
Please join us in a ROUND of APPLAUSE FOR
MATT AND ALISON WALSH!!!

August 26, 2016, 7PM-9PM: Father Shields to speak on ‘How to pass on vibrant faith to youth’
Catholic young people are falling away from the faith at a staggering rate as families and relatives struggle
with how best to respond. Catholics United for the Faith in Anchorage invites the public to an evening with
Father Michael Shields as he addresses some of the most pressing challenges now facing Catholic families.
Why do young people leave the faith? What can be done to help stem the tide? How can adults ensure that
children have a living, active and internal faith rather than merely a rote family tradition? What are some
effective family practices that can help young people grow and persevere in their walk with God once they
leave home? Father Shields will address these and other aspects of passing on the faith to the up-andcoming generation of Catholics. The evening runs 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, at the Lunney Center of
Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral in Anchorage. The presentation will include a talk followed by a
question and answer discussion. A potluck dessert reception will follow the talk. For more information, call
243-8168.

CATECHESIS
Divine Mercy
Renowned speaker and author Fr. Michael
Gaitley tells the dramatic history of God’s
Love and Mercy as interwoven through the
transformative message of St. Faustina, the
miraculous appearance of Mary at Fatima,
the witness of Maximilian Kolbe, and the
world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul
II. Featuring the brilliant cinematic artistry of
the Augustine Institute’s film studio, the vast
panorama of God’s work of mercy in the
world unfolds as a story to be experienced.

would like to donate, we would love to see
them.
We also are in need of volunteers
to help paint and craft.
The Atrium will be available for tours during the
annual Ministry Fair, so come and see what our
parish is planning for some of its youngest
members.
It is easy!
1) go to www.formed.org,
2) scroll down,
3) put in our code: 2a81e2
4) choose what you want to
watch
Please contact Rebecca Berry at
[email protected]
It’s that simple. Check it out and pass it on
to those in our parish and school.
Thank you to all who have donated
furniture and a globe.
(Our contract does not allow us to send it
outside of St. Benedict/Lumen Christi)

“So I ask you: Are you
looking for empty thrills
in life, or do you want to
feel a power that can
give you a lasting sense
of life and fulfillment?
Empty thrills or the
power of grace? To find fulfillment, to gain
new strength, there is a way. It is not a
thing or an object, but a person, and he is
alive. His name is Jesus Christ.”
