From the Office of
State President Diane Scillo
D
ear Sisters
& Brothers:
The Olympics are
over and March
Madness has begun. Lodge elections are over and
you have all selected your leaders for the coming year. I want to
thank all of you who have served the Order
this last year. Your dedication and work is
greatly appreciated.
As new Officers are installed they should
be given the necessary “tools” to lead their
Lodges. Those tools are the OSIA Ritual
Book, the Grand Lodge Bylaws, your own
Lodge Bylaws and the National Bylaws.
Each Officer who has a role in the Initiation
Ceremony should also have a copy of the
Ritual Book. The Lodge President, Recording Secretary and Orator should each have
a copy of the Grand Lodge Bylaws and the
National Bylaws. These books can be purchased from State Financial Secretary Paul
Pioli ([email protected]). There is a
nominal charge for the books.
The Grand Lodge Crab Dinner is now a
thing of the past. It was a very successful
event. Each Lodge was asked to donate a
raffle prize or prizes valued at $50.00. Fifteen of our Lodges and 15 State Officers as
well as other members answered that call
for help. We had 47 raffle prizes. Kudo’s to
everyone who sold a ticket, bought a ticket,
served, set-up, broke down, donated to the
raffle or performed one of the many myriad
tasks that it takes to have a successful dinner! The dinner was a lot of hard work, a lot
of fun and a true example of Brotherhood.
Weather wise it was a nasty night and Rina
GLNW On-Line: http://www.osiaglnw.org
Morley took a spill. She suffered a hairline
fracture in her right arm but is doing well.
Please remind your Lodge Recording Secretary to send a list of all of your newly
elected Officers to State Recording Secretary Janet Fritz, State Director of Publications Joe Jacobin and me. Please include
email addresses. If your Lodge has an ad in
the NWIN you will want to be sure to make
any changes necessary regarding the contact names currently shown.
By the time you read this, all Lodge Presidents should have received information regarding the hotel and dinner reservations for
the April 10-11, 2010 Grand Council meeting that will be held in Vancouver, WA. If
you have not received the information you
can email State 2nd Vice President Dawn
Forlini ([email protected]) for the information. Remember to make your reservations before the specified deadlines. State
Recording Secretary Janet Fritz will mail
the Agenda about the 3rd week of March.
Be sure to be on the lookout for leprechauns later this month. Our Brothers and
Sisters in Spokane will once again march in
the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in their community. They claim to have a lot of fun and
they pass out a lot of candy.
Be sure to remember all of our service
men and women in your prayers.
Ciao!

Tony Bennett graced the stage at the New

the official visual artist of the Festival by
painting the image to be displayed on the
Festival’s annual poster. Bennett’s portrait
of his friend and colleague, the late Louis
Prima, a New Orleans native, will be reproduced as the 2010 New Orleans Jazz
Festival poster in honor of the centennial
anniversary of Prima’s birth, which is celebrated in December of this year.
Bennett’s silk-screened poster is the first
edition in a new generation of poster series
for Jazz Festival, “Performance Art: The
Musical Artist As Visual Artist,” which
will showcase the visual artistry of musical performers.

Our Valentine Dinner went very well even
if we didn’t have as great an attendance as
we have had in previous years. A big thank
you to all the workers and especially to
the kitchen crew that cooked a very, very
good dinner. Everyone coming out of the
dining hall had nice things to say about it.
We also would like to give a special thanks
to the non-members who also helped. They
included the Finazzo boys, sons of Kristine Finazzo and the two sons of Frank
Wood.
We would also like to thank David & Angie Garrison from the Olympia Lodge for
coming and bringing a gift for our raffle table. They were also nice enough to bring
Herb & Phyllis Wilkowski, also from
Olympia’s Bella Vita Lodge. We enjoyed
seeing all of them.
We now will have election of officers at
our next meeting and then installation in
March. We hope to see some out-of-town
guests for the installation.
It is time to apply for a scholarship from
our Lodge. If you have children or grandchildren graduating from high school, call
me for an application as soon as possible.
You also need to have your dues paid and
have been a member for a year or longer.

At the February meeting we held our elections for officers and we have a new President. First off I would like to say Mary
Sangalang has done a great job and served
the lodge extremely well in her three year
tenure. And, and speaking for the entire
lodge, I don’t think we can ever thank her
enough for all her hard work. Frank Sternola was elected our new President. Frank
joined our lodge a couple of years ago. He
has contributed a lot of hard work and has
brought many new ideas to our lodge. He
has been the driving forcing behind the
Mystery Dinner the lodge will be hosting on Saturday April 17th, and I think he
will make an incredible President. Greg
Osgood will be our new Vice President. I
don’t want to say anything bad about Greg,
but let’s just hope Frank doesn’t get sick
and miss any meetings. Carmelo Ricciardelli will continue as Orator; Michele
Guerrini will continue as Recording Secretary; Linda Jacobin will continue as
Treasure; and Barbara Ascanio will continue as Financial Secretary. Len Patricelli
will be our new Sentinel, and Linda Patricelli will be our new Mistress of Ceremonies. Rita Traverso and Miep Lutzenhiser will continue in their second year of
a two year term as trustees. Joan Carson
was reelected as a Trustee. We still have
three positions open: Master of Ceremony
and two trustee positions. We would like
to fill those positions before we have our
installation of officers next month. Lisa
Desimone, Rose Prissinotti, Lou Fontana, Joan Mettler, and Stan Mettler were
elected to our Board of Arbitration. And
of course we are happy that Mary Sangalang will continue on the Board serving
as our Past President. Also, Wayne Olsen
has agreed to take over the Sunshine Committee duties from Stan Mettler, and we
are looking for a new chair of the Calling
Committee.
In Sunshine news, Miep Lutzenhiser’s
foot is currently in a cast after breaking a
bone in her foot. She should be in a walking boot in a couple of weeks.
Applications for the Bellevue Lodge
Scholarship went out in January and are
due March 31st.
Ron Sangalang had some exciting news
to report about the Olympics. J. R. Celski from Federal Way is a former student of
Ron’s. J. R. qualified for the Olympics in
March 2010
September, but crashed in one of the qualifying races and sustained a serious cut to
his thigh. After the injury, it was questionable if J.R. would ever be able to continue
to skate, but through hard work and determination he made it to the Olympics and
so far has won a Silver Metal in short track
speed skating.
For dinner at the February meeting, because it was Ash Wednesday, Nello Prissinotti and Rich Marasco made their incredible tuna pasta, and Rita Traverso
made fabulous three bean salad. For dessert we had King Cakes which is a traditional Mardi Gras treat of New Orleans.
Many people have been asking me about
the Mystery Dinner we will be have on
Saturday, April 17th, and I can’t really say
much because our Greg Osgood is writing a script for the show and refuses to answer and wishes to keep the details about
the show a secret. To be honest with you, I
don’t think he’s written very much and he’s
just trying to keep that a secret. I can tell
you that there will be chicken and pasta by
our cooks Nello Prissinotti, Rich Marasco, and Cathy Mettler so it should be another wonderful meal ─ no mystery there.
There will be wine of course ─ that’s not
a mystery. It will be in the Social Hall at
Holy Family Church, so no mystery there.
So I’m starting to wonder what’s so mysterious about this whole Mystery Dinner.
Next time I see Greg, I’ll see if he’ll let me
in a few more details about the dinner. (See
our ad on page 14 for more information.)
With all the excitement for the Mystery
Dinner we can’t forget that the Bellevue
Lodge Scholarship Breakfast will be on
May 15th. That will be on a Saturday, not
our usually Sunday, but we expect to have
another great lodge breakfast and hope to
see you all there.
Buon Cannoli!

Greetings Sisters & Brothers. Our lodge
held its elections in February. Incoming
officers due to be installed are as follows:
Dan Gookin, President; Tina-Marie
Schultz, Immediate Past President; Tami
Martinez, Vice President; Gene Gertson,
Recording Secretary; Salvatore Taibi, Financial Secretary/Treasurer; George Bozzo, Sentinel; Trustee Chairman, Margaret Davide; Trustees, Lena Patano, Chris
Shelton, Jim Shelton and Giulia PalmasRogers. The offices of Orator and Master/
Mistress of Ceremony will be appointed at
a later time.
We had a few sad moments this past
year as we lost two dear members: Randy Chappell and Ida Shelton. Their enthusiasm and participation in the lodge is
greatly missed. I know that they are busy
in the heavenly lodge ─ Randy singing and
hawking meatball sandwiches and Ida telling jokes and laughing with her infectious
smile.
As my tenure as President is coming to
a close, I want to take this opportunity to
thank three very special people, whom
without their continued help and support
from the inception of our lodge, it would
have been very difficult for me as president to run the club as successfully as it
has been.
First to my dear friend and co-founder of
Bonaventura Lodge, Margaret Davide,
thank you for your continued guidance and
support. You have been a great help since
that wintry night in January 2004 when
we both decided to start the lodge. Now
that I have some free time let’s take that
cruise! Dear Lena Patano, who tirelessly
helps whenever asked. I have never seen
a more dedicated lodge member at functions. You jumped in and helped whenever I called and never complained. At the
end of a 12 hour shift in the Festa Zeppoli
booth, you would ask me, “what else can
I do?” I want to know how do you do it in
those heels? Finally to my husband John,
always there, supportive and caring. You
earned the moniker St. John, given to you
by our members. When no one else would
step up to the plate to assist on events, officer vacancies, moving or building items,
setting up and breaking down events (and

and friend. Thank you from the bottom of
my heart. Thank you, Margaret, Lena and
John.
I would also like to thank Sal, MaryAnn, Patty, Tami and all the other lodge
members for their support of Bonaventura Lodge. We have some committed folks
with new energy and ideas. I’m sure the
new officers will do their best to fulfill all
their duties to the lodge. They have several visitations planned and are working on
some fun events for the year. I look forward to my year as Immediate Past President and Chairman of the 6th Annual Festa
Italiana.
Speaking of which, this year’s 6th Annual Festa Italiana will be held as a true
street fair in downtown Post Falls, Idaho.
We have an entire city street that will be
blocked for our Festa. September 25th &
26th are the dates to jot down in your calendar. The Festa will be easy to get to as it
will be located just off Idaho exit 5 (Spokane St) in Post Falls on Frederick Street,

February’s meeting had a Valentine’s Day
theme with all the tables decorated appropriately. Since it was Ash Wednesday we
had a meatless potluck dinner featuring
clam chowder and other fine entrées and

Following dinner our meeting’s main
course of business was election of our
2010 slate of officers. The Cataldo Lodge
officers for 2010 will be as follows: President, JoAnn Zarieki; Vice President, Bill
Haberstock; Financial Secretary, Mary
DeSantis; Recording Secretary, Marilisa Herndon; Treasurer, Jackie Haberstock; Orator, Richard Grillo; Guard,
Joe Geraci; Trustees, Joseph & Mattie
Maggi, Sheila Elia and Hugh & Josephine Brooks; and, Mistresses of Ceremony, Emily Geraci and Jean Yanity. Their
installation will take place at our March

a raffle of many great prizes.
Besides our own State Deputy Linda Anderson, we were joined at our meeting by
many guests. Among those were: Betty
Mayer, Mario & Dorothy Santelli, Janice Stauffer, and Allen Yanity, all from
the Tacoma Lodge.
We are in the final planning stage for our
upcoming spaghetti fund raiser dinner on

Ciao ognuno! By the time this newsletter
is published we will be into March. I can
only ask…what happened to February?
Well, January too for that matter. Time
seems to be flying by.
The Lodge is looking forward to its presentation April 17th of The Immigrant’s
Table. We’ll welcome you with a social
hour, a staged-reading by author Mary
Lou Sanelli, and a delicious Italian dinner prepared by our very own SOI member chefs. A book signing by Ms. Sanelli
will be held following dinner. Please call
Dorothy at 509-548-5697 or email her at
[email protected] to reserve your $25
advanced sale tickets for this much-anticipated dinner show. Proceeds are designated
for our NCW Italian Heritage Scholarship
Fund. The event will be at the Wenatchee
Museum (127 S. Mission) where we meet
monthly. For your further enjoyment, we
have put in an order for clear skies and
wonderful weather for you travelers. See
GLNW On-Line: http://www.osiaglnw.org
you at 5:30 on April 17th.
I would like to know if anyone has a copy
of the song Buon Compleanno? I can’t
find one on the Internet to download and
it would really be fun to sing along with as
part of our monthly birthday celebrations.
We’ll need both music and words on a CD.
Please give me a call at 509-667-9371 or
email me if you are willing to share your
resource with me or know where I can obtain a copy of the song.
Following the topic of Buon Compleanno, among our membership March’s sole
celebrant is Bob Fusano. Bob and his wife
Dianna have been members for a couple
of years now.
March will bring a few changes to our
Lodge. One of those changes is the return
of all our snowbirds. For a second or two,
I felt bad for those who fled our fair state
for the warmer climes of Arizona or California only to find unfavorable weather
there. Ironically, Wenatchee has had a rather light snowfall and warm winter season.
Anyway, welcome back everyone. Another change will be a new slate of officers.
They will be installed on March 26th at our
regular dinner meeting. When the election
results are known we’ll announce them in
the April newsletter.
The Board has been busy. They approved
the application of Rocci Hildum and will
present his application to the membership
at our February 26th meeting. The Board
continues to refine two important policies
(Membership Policy, Request for Services/
Donation Policy) as well as considering a
Mission Statement for the Lodge.
In closing, I’d like to ask all of us to make
time each evening to quietly center ourselves. Bring a bit of peace into our hearts.
Doing so will help us withstand this world’s
need to kick us good people off balance.
The more balanced and at peace with ourselves we are, the more we can help stabilize the person next to us. Peace.

Top of the Mornin’ to all the Lads and
Lassies in the Month of March! February
brought many OSIA members together at
the crab feed. It was well rewarded work
to be a part of the crab feed and great to renew friendships that you don’t get to see on
a regular basis. It makes you proud when
we all come together and the event is a success.
Our newly elected officers remain the
same with the exception of Liz Irving who
gladly accepted the position of Trustee.
Congratulations to President Nick Engrissei and the rest of the Board. Our installation dinner, on March 5, will be soup, salad, and salmon.
Mark your calendar to come, participate,
or help in any way for our first Nuova Piccola Italia sit-down dinner, May 8th. We
will have a great and tasty meal and live
big band music. You can easily fill a table
of eight or ten with your friends. Tickets
will be available at the March meeting.
We welcome Salvatore Morella to our
Lodge, from former Bellingham Lodge.
Congratulations to Marsilio & Magda DiGiovanni. Their daughter just gave them
their ninth grandchild. Babies truly are
from Heaven.
The bulbs are peeking out of the ground
and everyone is itching for Spring. The
sun is setting later in the day and we have
had some beautiful views of both mountain
ranges. The sunsets have been breathtaking and we are all blessed to live in a great
part of the country. Eat some corn beef on
March 17th, wear green unless you want
to be pinched and we will see you at our

Lucas, Mexico for Valentine’s Day. They spent a wonderful week
walking on the sunny beach, stuffed themselves with delicious
food, and got very tan! We’re jealous! The Sisters want to go
too!
It was nice to see Del (Julian) Delciello at our last dine out, it
had been a while. Hope to see Doris real soon (she is a bit under
the weather). Paula Cuneo gave us all a scare when they postponed her knee surgery. Glad the old ticker is doing well! Better
have the surgery soon so you can go on that free cruise without
John! Let’s hope that MaryLouise P. can get back into her apartment soon ─ there was a fire in her building (on February 15th).
She is fine but the fire department wouldn’t let her back in that
day!
Working at the Rest Stop: We still have a few good spots open
that need coverage and they are even during the day but the overnight shifts are covered! More supplies are still needed. We do
accept money for the supplies needed if you are not able to get
them yourself. Contact Chris Gerling at 425-775-5153 for more
information.
The March Lodge Meeting is on Monday, March 15th. We will
be having our annual Pasta Drive for the food banks. Remember,
if you bring the most pounds, you win a little prize! Let’s break
the legs off the St. Giuseppe’s table with all the pasta donated! We
will be dining on food from another heritage. Yes, you guessed it:
Irish! We will be having Irish stew and soda bread (made by little
leprechauns), salad, and for dessert, we will be switching it up to
another heritage. You’re guess is right! Italian! We will be having
our famous zeppoli’s (St. Joseph’s Cake). (Thank you Fran Albanese.) We hope that the luck of the Irish will be with us, so we will
hopefully have time for Bingo after the meeting.
The Social Dine-Out will be on Wednesday, March 31st. We
will meet at Lusia’s Mexican Restaurant at 7:00 p.m. The address
is: 9776 Holman Road NW, Seattle, WA, 98117 (located in Holman Road Square across from QFC). Please call ME at 206-4065107 or 425-478-0502 if you are joining us.
Save the Date: June 26, 2010. Get ready to shake those hips and
wear that coconut bra! It’s Luau time again! We don’t have all the
details yet, but keep the date clear!
Aloha, Ciao, and Slán from (get ready for it):

TACOMA LODGE #1175
A PAID AD
Tacoma, WA
A very Happy Birthday to all our Tacoma Brothers & Sisters,
family and friends born in the month of March: Joe Andrade,
Helen Berg, Barb Bufalini, Brad DiLuzio, John Greco, Sam
Jones, Robert LoFranco, Tom Manza, Fred Morley, Joan Patten, Joe Quilici, Tony Rendina, Joan Smith, Lisa Stauffer, and
Mary Zadow. We wish that you enjoy good health and best wishes through the year.
To Virginia Moceri and Rina Morley, we send our prayers to
you that you may recover quickly from your ailments. It was wonderful to see Lois Killenbeck at our last meeting. Our best wishes
to her as she continues to battle her illness.
Our meeting night was well attended with Tacoma members and
their guests. State President Diane Scillo, state officers and guests
from our sister lodges were in attendance for the evening. It was a
busy night tending to lodge matters but dinner was good.
The President had kind words on behalf of our recently departed members Wayne Harkness and Norma Coonan. These two
members of the lodge will be greatly missed.
A friendly reminder to our members that the dues need to be
paid. They must be paid before April. Totaling our membership
numbers helps to determine our per capita tax to the Grand Lodge.
If you have a question about dues, contact Gail Messina.
We had our election and there is a change in the roster of officers. Joe Munizza, returns as lodge President; Mike Palandrani,
our new Vice President; Tony Rendina, Orator; Rina Morley,
still remains Past President; Christine Manley is our Recording
Secretary; Gail Messina, Financial Secretary; and Elaine ZanghiBowden, Treasurer. The two new trustees are Joanne Girolami
and Dolores Grisaffe. Our returning Sentinel is Fran Laudadio;
Master of Ceremonies, Egidio Fuoco, and our Mistress of Ceremonies is Kathy Morley. We have a new list of names for the
Arbitration Committee.
We congratulate our new and returning officers. They will be
sworn in at the March meeting. We wish our elected Board the
very best and many thanks to the outgoing officers for their service to our lodge. Thanks to our election chairman Tony Rendina
and his staff, Don Martelli, Ken Roberts and Jim Moceri for all
their efforts in conducting the election.
During our meeting scholarship chairman Don Martelli stated
the scholarship forms are still available. If you have a son, daughter or grandchild who is a high school senior, please get a form.
The form and documents are due in April. Don is also asking for
volunteers to aid with our lodge pasta dinner event this April 18th
at St. Charles. The tickets will be available at our next meeting.
Pre-sale is the key to a successful event.
The March meeting will be a busy meeting. Marie Bernardo
is our speaker for that night. She is demonstrating how to make
gnocchi. Please be present and seated before the demonstration
starts at 5:30 pm. We will leave you guessing what dinner is that
night. In honor of our past Sister Toni Bourne, we are conducting
a charity clothing drive. Please donate any clothing items to the
lodge. We plan to initiate five new members and we will have the
change of officers’ ceremony.
On a side note, John & Guelda Messina’s daughter is in the
play “Over the River and Through the Woods” at the Tacoma Little Theater. Many of our members have seen it and have stated it
