ACANTHUS PRACTICES NEWS 2009 - 2010
Acanthus Architects df
Since the Acanthus Conference in Edinburgh in 2009 we have remained extremely busy with student
housing projects in Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle and Edinburgh as well as Aberdeen.
We have a new junior high school on site in the Shetlands, being constructed with another Danish
contractor, Pihl UK Ltd.
Also we are appointed by Aberdeen University to design and build new student accommodation on
their campus. A major new domestic development at the locations of some existing farm buildings on a
spectacular site in central Aberdeenshire. We have been appointed to build a new headquarter office
for ACE Engineering – leading winch manufacturer and module fabricator located in rural
Aberdeenshire – the office is for 120 people. Elsewhere we have conservation works in Aberdeenshire
and City of Aberdeen.
In 2009 we were joined by graduates Kirsten Hamilton and Claire Bonner, both of whom are extremely
busy on a variety of projects in education, conservation, new high quality houses and minor domestic
works on listed buildings.
We have thankfully remained insulated from the recession for the last few years and aim to maintain it
that way with a strategic marketing plan and effective QA which benefits our clients and all who we
come into contact with. We remain committed to and value the Acanthus network.

Less is the new more
2009 -10 has been as for many a difficult year. Turnover has reduced, and all unnecessary expenditure
cut.Salaries have reduced, and a small number of redundancies have been forced to maintain viability.
The practice has been fortunate in having ongoing long-term infrastructure projects for Tubelines at
Green Park and London Underground at Tottenham Court Road and securing new work on the Crossrail
Project at Pudding Mill Lane. Our new London Overground station at Haggerston has enhanced our
reputation and will officially open on May 23rd.
After a quiet 2009, our Housing teams have reported increased activity in both private and public
sectors culminating in winning a new design framework with Berkely Homes.
Some of our most interesting work has been carried out on Health and Education Projects as
exemplified by modular systems buildings for four secondary school sites and sustainable designs for a
new classroom block at Strand on the Green Infants School. Conservation projects include the
restoration and adaptive re-use of Hertford Brewery for Sainsbury’s, while our Landscape team
continues to support all sectors.
The outlook remains uncertain for the year ahead, however we take pride in having carried out some of
our best work and rejoined the AJ100 list over the past year.

Roch Castle:
The Grade 1 listed, 13th century, Roch Castle is proposed to be converted into a luxury corporate
retreat for the Retreats Group. The project value is approximately £2.2 million and will include full
renovation of the castle including extensive internal works with new floor and roof structures, restoration
of the exterior and a new bespoke sunroom extension. After obtaining listed building consent in spring
2009, works on site are progressing well, with completion of the project expected in 2011.
Twr y Felin:
Originally a windmill, Twr y Felin is a Grade II listed building which was extended around 1910. The
building is located in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park on the outskirts of St Davids. Acanthus
Holden Architects have recently received planning permission and listed building consent to provide a
5* luxury hotel. Work is now progressing on the detailed design information.

Robert Burns Birthplace Museum:
The construction of the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum for the National Trust for Scotland started on
site in February 2009. The green Douglas-fir structure of the café area and the timber panels have been
erected and the sedum roof is currently being installed. Opening is due on Saint Andrew’s Day 2010.
The all timber building was designed along sound environmental lines incorporating a host of sustainable
features which include a sedum roof, a labyrinth ventilation system and the use of Scottish timber.
The museum is part of a larger project aimed at enhancing links throughout the Alloway heritage site.
Cruiksfield House:
Cruiksfield House is a 19th century, B-Listed country house set in 43 acres of ground and farmland,
consisting of the main house with steading and outbuildings to the north.
The house has been altered and added to many times. Most of this work has been piecemeal and has
resulted in a building with very confused circulation and dead windowless space at its centre. Externally
the house has also suffered from poor and unsympathetic repairs. Internally the house was in better
condition with many original features surviving intact.
Addyman archaeology produced a Historic Building Assessment, which informed the feasibility study,
detailing our proposals for alteration and repair of the house and associated outbuildings. It presented a
holistic approach to the repair and alteration of the complex.
This project is currently on site, and is scheduled for completion in September 2010.
Robert Hutson Architects
Work for the Practice has become London centred over the last year, illustrations highlight ongoing work
at Northumberland House with the project management role in the completion of the public spaces.
At Tavistock Place our project for The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - the £5.5m first
Phase of which is drawing to a close. The office is now embarking on a feasibility study for the second
phase with an estimated construction figure of £15m, this element is intended to proceed to a Planning
Application this year.
Our ongoing commissions for The University of Westminster continue with a joint use proposal for 200
student bedrooms combined with a new Church and Youth Foyer project in Lambeth.
We are also about to commence on the conversion and refurbishment of a Lutyens Building in Central
London, which will bring with it its own particular challenges and opportunities.
