Welcom e Dear Friends, The State of North Carolina is proud to welcome you to the beautiful City of Wilmington for the 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival. This is such a wonderful time of year in our Port City and an ideal opportunity for visitors to truly enjoy the southern hospitality and natural beauty that make all of North Carolina a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. Azaleas are a favored plant in North Carolina, and our annual Azalea Festival and the crowning of the Azalea Queen signify that spring is here. A stroll through any of our cities and towns will include azaleas of all colors gracing homes and businesses throughout the season. Ann and I are pleased to welcome you to this special community event and we hope that you enjoy the splendor that is Spring in North Carolina. Kindest regards, Pat McCrory Governor Since 1948, North Carolina has welcomed the splendor of spring by celebrating the beauty of our great state during the North Carolina Azalea Festival. Sixty-seven years of tradition and southern charm makes the Azalea Festival one of the most cherished events in the South. With more than 1400 volunteers, we are truly a community driven event. Please join me in thanking each and every one of our great volunteers for their incredible enthusiasm and hard work. Our volunteer organization is more family than festival, and for that I personally thank you for your continued dedication. We further owe a great debt of gratitude to the more than 250 different sponsors that return each year to provide financial support to our great Festival. The North Carolina Azalea Festival would not be the success that it is today without the generous support of our Patrons, Donors, Event Sponsors, Community Partners, Benefactors and Major Sponsors. With your support, the Azalea Festival continues to be a crowned jewel of our community. Dear Guest, on behalf of our Board of Directors, 66 Past Presidents, over 100 Committee Chairs, and nearly 1400 volunteers, I welcome you to the 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival. With so many events to choose from, I am sure that you will find plenty to do during the Festival weekend. The “best bargains” are our Parade, Street Fair, and our nationally recognized Boxing Competition. The “can’t miss” events include our Airlie Luncheon, Celebrity Reception, Queen’s Coronation and our Concert Series. But, don’t forget the Circus, Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour, Historic Wilmington Foundation Home Tour, Coin Show, and Juried Art Show. It has truly been an honor representing this festival as a Sponsor, Volunteer, Committee Chair, Officer, and this year as your President. To Liz, Robby, Jean, Justin, and Jon, thank you for your hard work and dedication to the development of the future of this Festival. To Alison, Casey, Kevin, Meg and the rest of our incredible staff, job well done. To Donna, Hank, Chuck, Erica, Charlie and the rest of our Past Presidents, thank you for your kind words, encouragement, and advice along the way. To my wife Ashley, and daughters Drew and Katie, thank you for your patience, support, and understanding. What fun we have had as a family and what wonderful people we have met along the way. It is a history that recognizes and honors the freedoms and opportunities that our great country provides to all. It is the natural heritage of gardens, flowers, and beautiful landscape that this Port City provides. And it is the hope that each and every person who joins in this special weekend will celebrate the beginning of Spring in a wonderful variety of events with friends and family. I am especially pleased that since coming to Congress, I have officially been able to recognize the North Carolina Azalea Festival as a great American tradition, allowing it to take its rightful place among our nationally-recognized festivals. After all, this tradition is not only a North Carolina treasure, but also an American one. Call it stubborn redneck mettle, a well-developed case of “who I am” or just the fierce commitment to blaze a trail inherent to people from his home of Poyen, Arkansas. It doesn’t matter why, just that the blazing sense of off the beaten path drives his album of the same name. Again teaming with fellow writer/producer Jeremy Stover, the pair turn up the guitars, lean into the swagger and refine the powerful good ole boy perspective that allows for all the bravado. There’s a strong vein of tenderness and decency holding Moore’s kind of country together. Look no further than Rhett Atkins/Ben Hayslip/Ross Copperman-written “Point At You,” the lead single, that acknowledges every wild hair Moore has, but hits the bottom line of his goodness via the woman who became his bride. Those dualities are the truest thing about most red-blooded American males. Get loud, get rowdy, but get home and emerge solid family men dedicated to some basic ideals that have defined this country. One need look no further than The Warren Brothers/Lance Miller/ Randy Houser Randy Houser is a man refreshed. Houser’s own past contains no shortage of achievement, including multiple nominations for ACM and CMA Awards, a #2 single in the form of “Boots On,” and songwriting credits for major names such as Trace Adkins, Justin Moore and Chris Young. In 2008—mere months after the release of his debut single, “Anything Goes”—Houser was even asked by David Letterman himself to appear on the Late Show. The singer’s first full-length, Anything Goes, came out later that year, followed in 2010 by They Call Me Cadillac. Positive vibes ripple through “How Country Feels,” the sparkling first single from Houser’s Stoney Creek debut, which he cut with producer Derek George, a fellow Mississippian Houser’s been wanting to work with for a decade. “It was the obvious choice for a leadoff,” Houser says of “How Country Feels.” “It caught my ear the first time I heard it—like, ‘I wanna hear that again.’” Austin Cunningham-penned opener “Old Back In The New School” to understand Moore is all about the things that last, the wild times and the enduring values making for a way of life worth living. That will be live life to its fullest, no fear, no looking back, marks Moore’s intensity. Two strong hands, a back that can shoulder anything, this is working man’s post-modern American – and that respect is what binds him to his woman in “That’s How I Know You Love Me.” Ultimately, she refuses to make him change, and takes what’s there for what it is, loving him for all its busted glory. To believe in values that last, to embrace what is enough and know it’s more than plenty, that is the greatest truth for a man like Moore, who sees no reason to leave the place he grew up. Beyond the hits, the gold-certified albums and the momentum of a career hitting its stride, OFF THE BEATEN PATH is a collection of classic postcards that make up the ascending “This Kind of Town” and the driving chugger “One Dirt Road.” Josh Thompson When Ronnie Van Zandt told producer Al Kooper to “turn it up” at the start of “Sweet Home Alabama,” it was a moment of sheer confidence. What Lynyrd Skynyrd was about to lay down was burning, powerful stuff, and Van Zandt knew that the sound needed to be loud and proud. It’s that same spirit that led Josh Thompson to title his first Show Dog-Universal Music project Turn It Up. It’s a modern, kickin’ country party album, with plenty of swagger, plenty of energy and plenty of blue-collar, hammer-swingin’, fist-pumpin’ attitude. Turn It Up is bound to invigorate Thompson’s fans. It’s already got Thompson and his road-warrior band kicking it into high gear on the road, where they frequently sell out frenzied clubs and theaters in their own headlining dates. Even if he finds himself opening arena or amphitheaters for someone else, the music guarantees that his set throws down the gauntlet. 67th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 17 18 | 2014 Souvenir Book :00pm 8 h t 2 &1 h t 1 1 l Apri Widespread Pa nic Friday April 11th and Saturday April 12th, 8:00pm Location: The Miller Lite Main Stage-CFCC 411 North Front Street Tickets: $60 Twenty-seven years ago, a singer everyone called J.B., a bass-playing future journalism school dropout and a guitarist nicknamed Panic for his bouts with anxiety went looking for a drummer for their next gig. After striking out with the usual suspects around Athens, Georgia, the three friends made an eleventh-hour call to a high-school band mate of the guitar player living in Atlanta, thinking he might still have his kit handy. A few days later, Todd Nance rolled up to the house at 320 King Avenue shared by John Bell, Michael Houser and David Schools in an old, beat-up white Maverick, his drums crammed into the back. After a night of rehearsing, the new quartet hopped onstage together for the first time the next day at the old Mad Hatter Ballroom to play a short set that opened with the Buffalo Springfield classic “For What It’s Worth.” Widespread Panic was born. Within the year, Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz, a drummer new in town from Austin, Texas, began turning up at their regular Monday night gigs at the Uptown Lounge and never left. As weekly gigs morphed into regional tours, the band began to forge a sound unto themselves, a combination of Houser’s unorthodox guitar playing, Bell’s coarse growl, Nance’s rock-steady drumming, Schools’ lead bass playing, Ortiz’s multi-textured percussion coupled with a collective commitment to playing original songs from the outset and a willingness to walk the improvisational high wire night after night. Landslide Records came calling and Space Wrangler, Widespread Panic’s debut album, dropped in September 1988, the first copies of which were hand-delivered to the band by Col. Bruce Hampton, an area shaman, bandleader and early mentor. Former Dixie Dreg T Lavitz manned the keyboards for the band’s self-titled follow-up released on Capricorn Records in July 1991, but it really wasn’t until John “Jojo” Hermann – a native New Yorker-turned-Mississippian equally snapped by the likes of Professor Longhair and Terry Adams - claimed the chair the following spring that the band felt like a true ensemble. With a new songwriter, vocalist and worthy onstage foil in Hermann in the fold, the band’s lineup was set. Over the next two decades, Widespread Panic released nine more studio albums and sold more than three million records, building a loyal following on the road beginning in dingy dive bars across the South and eventually headlining nearly every major U.S. music festival and selling out some of the world’s most prestigious venues. No artist has more soldout concerts at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, and their headlining appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival set the singleday attendance record. The celebration for their first live album, Light Fuse, Get Away, drew more than 100,000 fans for a free show in downtown Athens and is still considered one of the largest CD-release parties in music history. By 2002, the band was one of America’s best and most sought-after rock acts, but rock ‘n roll fairytales inevitably take a tragic turn. Michael Houser, Panic’s founding guitarist and inscrutable core, developed pancreatic cancer. The guitarist remained rooted at stage right until a few weeks before his death, delivering a spine-tingling, tear-jerking performance for the band’s headlining spot at the inaugural Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival. Eight weeks after leaving the road, Houser was gone, taking with him a unique musical signature that fans affectionately dubbed The Lingering Lead. An era was over. At the behest of their late guitarist, the remaining band members returned to the road, enlisting several friends to share the stage and help heal the void left by the irreplaceable Houser. It wasn’t until the summer of 2006 - when John Bell placed a call to an old friend to see if he might be interested in joining the band - that the wheels were put in motion for a new chapter in Widespread Panic’s history to begin. Jimmy Herring was no stranger to Widespread Panic when he got the call inviting him to join the band. A veteran of the Atlanta music scene, Jimmy first crossed paths with the band in the late ‘80s as the lead guitarist for Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. From the first flurry of notes at his very first show with the band – the opening night of a four-show run at Radio City Music Hall that kicked off the band’s 2006 fall tour – Herring has re-energized Widespread Panic in the best way possible: by restoring a signature guitar sound to their music, returning a sense of balance to their ensemble and enabling the band to continue to incite, amaze and move people closer to joy. Nothing gold can stay, and no band understands that lesson better than Widespread Panic, but with Herring now in his seventh year in the fold and the band fresh off an ten-month hiatus and ready to roll, there’s a palpable sense of renewed purpose and commitment and a rejuvenated enthusiasm within the band. That vibe – the feeling that anything can and may happen – is back with Widespread Panic. And it feels good. 67th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 19 20 | 2014 Souvenir Book “ e h A t e z v a o l e L a e Festival W y h W “I have enjoyed just about every Azalea Festival since the first one when I caught the bus with my best friend and went to the parade all by ourselves. I was only 8 years old. I enjoyed all the early celebrities who were movie stars. I guess my first was Esther Williams. I have attended more and more events as they have been added. The concerts at Trask were my favorites, especially Debby Boone and B. J. Thomas. Meeting the Pat Boone family was the highlight of all. Now that I am on the Parade Committee, I love arriving downtown very early Saturday to see that all celebrities and queens get on their cars to ride in the parade. The excitement is contagious. I look forward to many more festivals.” -Ann Kirby, 2014 Parade Kings & Queens Chair “Romance blossoms during the North Carolina Festival! Throughout the years, there have been at least seven marriages between members of the Azalea Festival Queen’s Court and their cadet escorts.” -Beth and Greg Bell, 2014 Queen’s Court Chair and Co-Chair “One of my favorite memories was in 1982 when the musician, Paul Anka came and performed. We had the Worker's Party after the Concert for all of the festival’s volunteers and he came & danced with everyone. He kept saying how he enjoyed the Azalea Festival and it made everyone feel great.” -Jean Lawler, 2014 North Carolina Azalea Festival Treasurer “1997 Festival I will never forget. Started raining on Friday night and continued to rain all day Saturday. Parade did not stop and neither did the street fair. We had to move vendors out of standing water. We never put a vendor at the foot of Princes Street and Water Street, that year we did. When high tide came water flooded from the drainage pipes into the food vendor's area. Health department shut the vendor down. I had to change my clothes 3 times, had 2 pair of tennis shoes with me. Had to call my daughter to bring me a dry pair. Weather cleared was a beautiful night for the bands to play for what we used to call the street dance.” -Hugh McManus, 2014 Parade Reviewing Stand Chair “It is amazing to see how the Parade has grown over the years. I remember a time when we could not even fill the parade reviewing stands, you could not give the tickets away. It is so nice that it has reached a point where not only the Wilmington business and residential community want to be a part of it but all the branches of the city want to as well.” -Donna Robbins, 2014 Concerts & Main Stage Chair “This is my 38 year as a volunteer for the North Carolina Azalea Festival. I have served on the same committee, the concert committee back stage. What wonderful memories I have from all the entertainers all these years. I think the one that sticks in my mind the most was Frank Sinatra the year 1994 when Hank Miller was our president. Frank gave me two dozen long stemmed Red Roses that I cherish to this day. I also have an autographed picture that Frank did for me in my presence, a kiss on the hand and let him into his dressing room. Oh such memories. I also have a copy of all of the Azalea Festival Prints for every year we have had them. The ones that were done by an artist are singed and numbered. I cherish these also. I look forward to this year and many years to come. Come volunteer with us. You will be hooked.” -Shelby Moore, 2014 Entertainment/Hospitality Chair ” 67th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 21 Looking Back 1955 Queen’s Court Parade Float MAKENZI photo courtesy of new hanover public library DANIEL Proud supporters of the North Carolina Azalea Festival 1213 Culbreth Drive 22 | 2014 Souvenir Book | Founded in 1897, Brooks Pierce is a business law firm providing strategic counsel and innovative solutions to clients from offices in Greensboro, Raleigh, and Wilmington, North Carolina.
