Mayor’s Messag
Summer has now drawn to a close but
Council remains committed to
ensuring that residents can make the
most of the colder months of the year.
Recently, we presented our case on
the Flower Power planning proposal to
the State Government appointed Joint
Regional Planning Panel who voted in
favour of allowing the proposal to go
through the ‘Gateway’ process despite
strong community opposition against
the plan. This is a very disappointing
outcome and I will continue to fight to
protect our area.
We remain focused on ensuring our
local infrastructure is renewed and
maintained including our local roads,
footpaths, parks, kerbs and gutters.
In particular, Burwood Park has been
given a fresh new look with a range of
projects being undertaken. The
automated restrooms are now
complete and works are currently
underway at the outdoor café area
which adjoins the amenities block.
Paving works are also being
undertaken
near
the
Burwood
Memorial Arch to make way for our
special Anzac Centenary memorial
sculpture which will be unveiled at our
Dawn Service this Anzac Day.
Remembering our local heroes
this Anzac Day in Burwood
Local heroes and their stories of courage, endurance and mateship will
forever be immortalised with the unveiling of a centenary sculpture at
Burwood’s Anzac Day Centenary Dawn Service on Saturday, 25 April.
Burwood has a strong connection to World War I with 937 men and 4
women from the area enlisted to serve. The sculpture, which will overlook
the Burwood Memorial Arch, will be a permanent symbol of their sacrifice
and dedication to our nation.
The Dawn Service will commence with the march of our ex-service
personnel at 6am from Church Street followed by the service at 6.30am in
front of the Memorial Arch in Burwood Park.
The sculpture is a joint initiative of Burwood Council and Burwood RSL in
conjunction with the Burwood Anzac Centenary Years Commemorative
Service Committee.
I encourage you to attend our service
in Burwood Park at 6am on Anzac Day
to take part in a significant event for
our local community as we mark the
100th anniversary of the First
Australian Imperial Force’s landing at
Gallipoli.

AUTUMN 2015 BURWOOD UPDATE
Modernity meets history at Burwood’s new
open space in the heart of the CBD
Residents, visitors to Burwood and
commuters on their way to work have a
new place to unwind, grab a cuppa and
check their emails, against the backdrop
of urban art, with the opening of Railway
Square in the heart of Burwood CBD.
Railway Square, located on the corner
of Burwood Road and Railway Parade,
is a new open space which features a
café inside the old Post and Telegraph
Office to cure coffee and chocolate
cravings, free public Wi-Fi to check
emails and social media and a large
screen television to watch the latest
news or sporting events, while improving
pedestrian flow to Burwood Station.

The artwork represents Burwood’s diverse community with young and old, and people from many cultures,
coming together for one of Burwood’s favourite pastimes, chess in the park representing our intercultural
and intergenerational exchange.
Celebrating
achievements in
our community
Inspirational stories of achievement in the local
community were on display in March, including a
young woman with an intellectual disability who spent
3 months trekking in South East Asia and two sisters
who performed as tap dancers for troops and those in
Prisoners of War camps during World War II.
International Women’s Day photo exhibition
These stories were part of Council’s Seniors Week
and International Women’s Day celebrations, with
portraits of our local achievers on display at two photo
exhibitions in the Library and Community Hub.
Council’s Seniors Week project was a joint initiative
with Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College, with
year 12 students taking photographs of inspiring
senior members of our community for the Live Life in
Full Colour exhibition.

Former Burwood Courthouse
saved from demolition
The former Burwood Courthouse has been saved from
demolition after the Land and Environment Court dismissed
an appeal by the applicant to demolish the Federation
building.
Council rejected the proposal which was then appealed in
the Land and Environment Court in November 2014.
The courthouse, located on Burleigh Street, was constructed
in 1906 alongside the former police station which was built
in 1900.
