The Carpenter March 6, 2016 4th Sunday of Lent Our Vision Through our Baptism and Eucharist, we are called to love as Christ loves and serve as Christ serves. Our Mission In Jesus Christ, we will grow and flourish through • Engaging, welcoming and building community • Lifelong faith formation • Social justice and service to others in need • Engaging and understanding the energy and interests of our youth • Prayer and worship that deepens our spiritual life • Accountability in using our resources wisely MERCY You Are Always With Me so that we may live life abundantly! St. Joseph Catholic Church—Libertyville, Illinois www.stjoseph-libertyville.org 1 An Invitation: Is God Calling You? Lent is a time for getting closer to God through sacrifice and prayer. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius have provided a way to deepen our prayer and reflection for over 500 years. Many who embrace and practice the Exercises find that the meditation and reflection provide a sense of peace that leads to stronger personal relationships, better decisionmaking, and a closer connection to God. Our Ignatian Spirituality group will be providing an introduction to the Exercises through Lightworks this Lent, with our program running through March 13. Each session begins with a talk, followed by small group sessions to learn the basics of Ignatian meditation. 3/6 Unearthing God’s Plan for Us 3/13 Christ as a Model for our Conversion All sessions will be held in the Loughry Room beginning at 3:00 p.m. and ending by 4:30. Please consider joining us for any sessions of interest. To learn more, please email us at [email protected]. You Are Always With Me MERCY If I have but eyes to see and ears to hear, I would know You are always with me, Lord. But too often I fail to You Are look with eyes of faith; I fail to listen Always With Me with ears of compassion and mercy. Be my eyes, O Lord, that I might see as You see. Be my ears that I might hear as You hear. Help me to understand the truth and be mindful that each and every moment of my day, I have the choice to walk with You or to walk away from You. And, Lord, please grant me the wisdom to know the difference. My family and I have been members of the parish for 22 years. We have three children. Angela is a junior at the University of Illinois, Johnny is a freshman at Carmel High School, and Gus attends a special needs school in Rockford. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Illinois. I obtained a Masters of Business Administration in Marketing from DePaul University. Before joining the Parish Staff in 2014, I worked for Chicago area corporations in materials management, logistics, administration, and manufacturing. In this newly creat- ed position, I will be advocating and promoting unity, stewardship, and continuing a strong, sustainable financial standing and future. In my experience working in Liturgy and Ministry, I have met and enjoyed working with many parishioners. Our parish is blessed with an engaged community and I look forward to meeting more of you. Pope Francis in this Jubilee Year of Mercy calls us to reflect on mercy and to be merciful towards others. In this period of Lent, let us reflect and give thanks for our blessings. I thank Father Trout, Deacon George Kashmar, staff and parishioners for allowing me to serve in this position. ——––––—–—–——— Community Building Welcome Weekend March 12/13 “He who receives you receives Me, And He who receives me receives Him who sent me” Matt. 10: 40 Have you recently had the opportunity to say “Welcome to St. Joe’s!” and extend a warm handshake? More details to follow. Sponsored by The Men’s Ministry of St. Joseph Parish Pray for Vocations The Archdiocese recommends that parishes provide for a holy hour to pray for priestly vocations. In support of this, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and our Spiritual Formation Committee has scheduled a holy hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays have been chosen as an ideal day for having the prayer hour as it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. If you are looking for a special action this year, what better way than a short visit on Thursday to pray for an increase in priestly vocations? If you are unable to join us, please keep vocations in your prayers. Marriage Tip of the Week: A pediatrician asked a new mom when she and her husband were going to have a date that week. The doctor said, “I’m serious. Unless you agree to have a weekly date, you can find another pediatrician. Your child is more likely to thrive if your marriage is strong.” For more information, visit www.foryourmarriage.org. We need to be thankful for the farmers who provide the food and we should pray for those who do not have enough to eat. Lent would be a good time to get back in the habit. Are you looking for a truly meaningful volunteer experience? Catholic Charities is currently recruiting mentors to work with youth ages 9-12 in Lake County. Studies show that volunteering just a few hours a month can have a lifelong impact on a young person. Once you’ve been matched, develop a schedule and plan activities that work best for you and your mentee. Outings can happen during the week or on the weekend. Take in a movie, visit a museum, play a board game, or just spend a day in the park. Our Program Coordinator will be there every step of the way to offer guidance and training, suggest age-appropriate activities, and help you develop a strong relationship with your mentee. You will also have an opportunity to participate in quarterly special events that bring all of our mentors and mentees together to engage in fun activities, share ideas, and build supportive relationships. Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. If you’re ready to make a difference, call today! Please take time today to call your state elected officials with this simple message, “I am a voter in your dis- trict. I am contacting you on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people who depend on our state’s safety net of human services, especially the more than 1 million people served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.” If you do not know who your state representative and senator are, please call the State Board of Elections at 217-782-4141 or visit website www.elections.il.gov and click on “New District/ Official Search.” You can find more information and a template advocacy letter at www.CatholicCharities.net on the homepage. Employment Ministry to Meet March 16 “What Do I Want to Do?” Series As one enters into job search, our first and primary task is to answer the question, “What do I want to do?” If you are clear about what you want, it will help you present yourself to a prospective employer in a confident and succinct manner. Developing a strong job search strategy starts with clarity of your value proposition and related resume. In this series, the Employment Ministry is pleased to offer presentations to help you: 1) Determine what skills, talents, strengths and abilities make you unique, what type of activity energizes you and makes you happy, and what types of jobs are likely to provide you with the most personal satisfaction, 2) Help you develop the language to clearly articulate your unique traits in just two or three sentences, and 3) Create a crisp, clear value proposition for yourself and prospective employers. In our March 16 meeting, we will pull together all the elements of the previous four sessions to create your individual “Value Proposition” – the qualities that make you stand out from other candidates, also known as your personal “Brand”. Please bring your worksheets from the previous sessions! Thoughts on Giving “No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.” (Joshua 5:12) Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need. Join with other women who know what it is to walk in the steps of breast cancer, to reflect, listen, pray and share experience. Each woman will receive a simple journal, reflection questions and have an opportunity to share. The women will be invited to look at the journey of breast cancer through the symbol of a pilgrimage. We will meet on Thursday evenings beginning March 31 at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room 1 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in northwest Mundelein/Fremont Center. The meeting dates are: March 31, April 7, 14, 38, May 5 and 12. The group will be facilitated by Catherine Sims, M. Div. Next Sunday’s Gospel — John 8: 1-11 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his Response: Glory to You, O Lord finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection As we approach the end of Lent, we once again find Jesus dealing with the treachery of the Pharisees, this time in the Gospel story of the woman caught in adultery. We should take heed of Jesus’ message to the Pharisees when he speaks to the adulteress, taking to heart both the message for the sinner and those condemning her. The message to the Pharisees is clear and straightforward: judge not lest ye be judged. The warning is one we should all heed. But what is Jesus saying to us in his interaction with the adulterous woman? It is a powerful message of love. We are his beloved children who are not condemned or defined by our sins. He sees us, not our sin. Do we see ourselves as Jesus sees us? Or do we see ourselves as unacceptable because others condemn us? Whether it comes from an irritable parent, a frustrated teacher, a mean-spirited colleague or an upset spouse, we often allow the comments or reactions of others shape how we see ourselves. Jesus’ invitation is for us to remember that, first and foremost, we are his children, loved and lovable. If he does not condemn us for our sins and weaknesses—neither can the judgements and assessments of others change our value as beloved children. If we are burdened or challenged by our past, Jesus wants us to turn to him to find love and acceptance. We then can move forward to grow in holiness, freed up from the judgment of those who have no right to condemn us in the first place. For further reflection on the importance of acknowledging our sinfulness, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1846-1851. Reflection Questions 1. What labels or condemnations that I carry from the past can I bring to Jesus and leave with Him? 2. As Christians we are called to love one another as Christ loved us. How can I make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to love myself as Christ loves me? 3. Christ is the model of acceptance. What can I do to demonstrate greater tolerance and acceptance of those in my family? My ministry? My Parish? My community?
