“Racing the Squall” by Emmitt Thames
Donated By: LifeShare Foundation
American Grand Master Emmitt Thames, who has resided and painted in Gulfport since 1961,
has produced over 3,200 works of art in his 50-year career. Born and raised on a farm west of
Brookhaven, Mississippi, Emmitt progressed from a rural depression-era childhood into the
ranks of the leading American realists. Represented through the years by galleries in Chicago,
Indianapolis, New Orleans, Jackson, Mississippi, and West Point, Mississippi, Emmitt’s
watercolors, egg temperas, gouaches, and oils have found homes in all 50 states. His
achievements include three one-man museum exhibitions and he has won many awards. His
artwork hangs in museums, government, corporate, private and university collections. The
University of Mississippi has purchased Mr. Thames’ work, as have Senators Thad Cochran and
Trent Lott. Mr. Thames’ paintings have sold for as much as $25,000.
