the 8th - Heart Of Gold
The 8th presenting sponsor Now in its 8th showing since 2006, the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival is still beating very strongly with its unique mission to showcase some of the finest shorts from around the world that are sure to make audiences laugh, cry (ok, just a little bit!) and think. There’s enough doom and gloom on our multitude of screens at home, so why don’t you escape to our cinemas for a bit of comic relief and perhaps even some transformative experiences?! Rockhampton is the town I grew up in. Gympie holds a special place in my heart as way back in the eighties I made my one and only Queensland side, being selected for the Under 15’s. I have the maroon hat to prove it. Now, I work and dream in a different industry altogether. I attempt to tell story via the medium of the theatre world and film and television. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with the people I have and to have travelled to the locations A d ult I have, yet Queensland is always home. The country town is where I saw all the idiosyncrasies of life. This is where characters were drawn from and emotion was built as I grew and learnt about the world via life around me. I am grateful to be asked to be the patron for this year’s festival. I jumped at the opportunity to come home. In the next few days, one has a chance to see stories from many different parts of the world and from all over Australia. An event not to be missed. Con c. Although our days of real gold discovery may be over, events such as this eighth Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival are now the true cultural treasures to be unearthed and enjoyed. Gympie Regional Council has been a constant supporter of the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival since its inception and I am proud that the committee, volunteers, sponsors, the community and you, the audience have all played a part in working together to stage another great Heart of Gold. In the eight years that the festival has been running, we would have all faced times of stress and sadness. This festival is a wonderful way to lift spirits and leave the worries of day to day life and the wider world behind, even if just for an hour or two and enjoy the talents of local, national and international film makers in the company of our friends, family and neighbours. The Heart of Gold is one vital component of our inaugural RUSH Festival which is running over the month of October. RUSH Festival celebrates the Gympie region and its people. Our community, culture and heritage will be in the spotlight with a broad calendar of events including not only this one but the Gold Rush Art Competition, Gold Rush Festival, Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival and various concerts. Enjoy the films you have chosen to watch, enjoy RUSH Festival, enjoy the beautiful assets of our region and may the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival keep beating strongly for many years to come. Mayor Mick Curran Gympie Regional Council Some words from Mandy and Margie You could say that we’ve come a full circle (or rather, is it a full heart?) since we excitedly accepted the position of Artistic Directors for Heart of Gold, earlier this year. Our first ever film, A Fowl Fairytale, struck gold at the inaugural festival back in 2006, with nominations for the best documentary and best comedy awards. We may not have left with any of the coveted trophies, but we 4 certainly did drive out of town, feeling all the richer with many new friends, not to mention memories. for film camps, and learn about all facets of the craft. At the risk of sounding fanciful, Sundance had to start somewhere, right? So, it was with an absolute sense of pride and honour that almost 10 years later, we’ve taken on the role of prospecting for Heart of Gold’s 24-karat programme. Enough said about the golden future, we hope you very much enjoy the ‘now’ and leave our cinemas feeling much lighter than when you went in! We haven’t just had our eye on shaping this year’s event but also on the horizon, with a view to helping the festival build on its already very solid foundation, and positioning it as a flagship for one of the country’s major filmmaking destinations. A lot of energy, heart and soul went into what you’ll see on the screen – right from the very instant the cameras started recording the images (if not before!) to the moment the projector lights up the theatre – and we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who’ve made this happen. As part of this cunning plan, we see Gympie, Queensland as a place linked with filmmaking excellence, where kids from around the country can come to Yours in golden shorts, Mandy and Margie Artistic Directors Our Judges MEREDITH GARLICK HELEN CROWLEY Producer, writer, senior executive Heart of Gold – screener group coordinator Meredith is a producer, writer and senior executive, with over 20 years in the film and television industry. Consisting of 10 artworks donated by renowned local artists, it’s the festival’s major fundraiser and an exclusive opportunity for private collectors and businesses that are looking to acquire unique artworks. There are ONLY 500 tickets up for grabs (so the odds are very good), they’re $20 each, and they’ll be drawn on Sunday afternoon, 11 October 2015, according to a special system: When you buy a ticket, you’ll record your order of preference for each of the artworks, from 1-10. As tickets are drawn, winners will be allotted their highest preferred artwork, depending on pieces available at the time. So … even if you’re drawn first or last you may still win the piece of art that you prefer! Tickets are available at the festival, or by calling: 07 5482 4547. 1.Ken Gailer - Shades of Summer Painting, acrylic 40cmx40cm This work is a reflection of the Australian landscape painted from both memory and photographs, which explores the moods, colours and ever changing patterns of the world in which we live. Gympie-based Ken is an artist of longstanding reputation. His work is shown in galleries and in private collections in Australia and overseas. 2.Chris Postle - Caught Out Painting, acrylic 100cmx180cm For quite a few years I deliberated on a theme for the Cricket Art Prize Australia (a Sydney-based competition). The idea twigged after overhearing Andrew Denton on a TV talk back segment, mentioning nuns having fun. Yes, that’s it I thought, nuns playing cricket. The more we lighten up and take the seriousness from these contentious ideals that have plagued humanity for centuries, the more we have a chance to survive as a species. Let’s re-write the rules, starting with a game of cricket. 3.Cindy Vogels - Lady Gaga Couture hat, blot feather 25cmx30cm I’m a devoted milliner and the Arts and Cultural Ambassador for the Gympie Region. Yes, I’m the Australian milliner/fashion designer who has worked with Lady Gaga. I’m in the business of making women feel amazing. And yes, the moment that changed my life started with all the possibilities I could see in the raw materials around us. I truly want to inspire others to dream a little bigger and share it forward. 4.Phil Willy - Common Courtesy Sculpture, steel & concrete 1220mmx750mmx300mm As a child I made numerous models of ships, planes, railways and people by carving, cutting and sticking, using balsa, cardboard, plaster and wire. Most recently I have used found objects as a basis for assembling figurative sculpture that incorporates movement, from the action of a large pendulum. 52 5. Dennis Granshaw - Recycled Metals, jewellery stand sculpture 85cmx40cm Dennis is a local dairy farmer with a shed full of salvaged pieces of old farm and milking machinery. He has been converting these into unique mail boxes and sculptures for friends and neighbours, reflecting something of their personality. Jewellery stands are a new creation. This one is made from plough bolts, milking claws, guide pistons and a shiny heart of gold. He recently added animal sculptures, garden sculptures and gates to his creations. Despite many enquiries, his artwork is not for sale or made to order. He enjoys creating the pieces as a surprise to others. 6.Valerie Willy - Build a Garden Ceramic, rake-fired clay 415mmx190mmx190mm If you want to be happy for a day, Get drunk If you want to be happy for a week, Kill a pig If you want be happy for a year, Get married If you want to be happy forever, Build a garden. I do not know who wrote this, but it is what my piece is about. Gardens – big and small – bring happiness to many living things, including humans. After 40 years I still feel excitement each day working with clay. 7. Ellen Appleby - Contemporary Heirlooms, memento vase Porcelain 33cmx20cmx20cm The layers of decoration on this memento vase reflect my British heritage, my travels to China and my development as a ceramic artist. With a contemporary twist, it speaks of my mother’s decorated tea sets, the fabulous colours of Chinese ceramic stains, and the delicacy and strength of Australian porcelain. I hope this piece will find a special home, and be used, felt, enjoyed, and that the subtleties in the work will be revealed over time. 8. Meaghan Shelton - Conversations With My grandmother Painting, oil on canvas 40cmx40cm I am interested in the notion of intuition as a kind of feminine intellect. There is a matrilineal thread which connects me to my practice, embroidering my works with the influences of those who came before. Meaghan is first and foremost a fine artist and painter whose practice extends to sculpture, writing, fashion, photography, film, design collaborations and arts education. She exhibits throughout Australia. 9. Kym Barrett - In Your Heart Painting, acrylic & crayon on paper 75cmx98cm I use drawing materials with acrylics or oils and wax. My aim is to create works that subtly evoke the natural world as well as things intangible and unseen. Nature’s colours, markings and processes influence my work on canvas, paper and board both consciously and unconsciously. 10.Christopher Hardwick - Bunya-Bunya pendant, silver & peridot My practice as a visual artist embraces the creation of small objects, sculpture, multimedia and jewellery. Each work of art is handcrafted with the intent of developing a dialogue within the public arena. This work celebrates the gathering together of community, as did the first peoples who inhabited this area. I have included the Bunya-Bunya motif to celebrate this gathering as a community. Its creation is to mourn the huge loss of the trees as industrialisation pursues its relentless march and to hopefully inspire us all as we reflect on the original inhabitants of this land and aspire to learn their community and land management practices. 53 Credits Management Board Grant Applications Claudia Granshaw (Chair) Elaine Thomson (Treasurer) Greg Jones (Secretary) Jennine Heymer Rose Angus Scott Sturgess Gay Lohse Claudia Granshaw Jennine Heymer Jules Delgado Flickchicks Credits SESSION PRESENTERS’ COORDINATOr Helen Crowley Ticketing Festival Event Coordinator Greg Jones Cayte Hehir Artistic Directors Promo Film Office Support Accommodation Flickchicks Shane & Julie Templeton Mark Torrens Dennis & Claudia Granshaw Hamish & Max Skill Centred Queensland Jan Watt Araluen Retreat Amamoor Lodge Social Media Michaela Banks Mandy Lake, Flickchicks Margie Brown, Flickchicks Amelia Paxman, AD support IT Support / Database Venue Fit-Out Greg Jones Michaela Banks Administration / Event Support Technical Director Master Classes & School Film Competition Photographers Julie Calvert Sheila Kath Michael Mader, Haycom Public Relations Sarah Baker, SM Collective Graphic Design Jennine Heymer Liz Lewis Terese Phillips Amanda Hazel Hospitality Coordinator Art With Heart Film Classification Festival Shop / Information Jenny Oakley Robyn Bowman Sandra Naidoo Paul Ryan Helen Crowley Festival Bar Screener Groups hosts Sponsorship Scott Sturgess Gympie Cooloola Rotary Club Gay Lohse Robyn Bowman Claudia Granshaw Flickchicks Usher Coordinators Helen Crowley Sheila Kath Claudia Granshaw Kay & Sean Ryan Sandra Naidoo & Alex Price Thea Van Den Berg Denise & Steve Kolera Graphic Design Support Rose Angus Robyn Bowman Accounting Support Ann O’Brien Mitchell Granshaw (Internship) Rose Angus Sheila Kath Sandra Naidoo Little Haven Palliative Care Venue Gympie Regional Council Gympie Civic Centre, Mellor Street Tony Kishawi Catering Julie-Ann Payne Jackie Manson Website Flickchicks Tailored Web Services Joolie Gibbs Sean Dowling Festival Cafe Satellite Events Holly Pitman (Noosa) Michaela Banks (Adelaide) Claudia Granshaw/Paul Ryan (Mary Street) Scott Sturgess/Jenny Oakley (Childers) Merissa Craft, Paragon Theatre (Childers) Mia Hacker, Floating Land.
