Midland College Health Sciences provides nine successful programs, which include our: • two-year associate degree nursing program; • one-year vocational nursing program; • emergency medical technician certification; • diagnostic medical sonography program; • respiratory care therapist program; • healthy information management program; • and the fire academy program. The F. Marie Hall SimLife Center on the Midland College campus is both an educational and clinical laboratory that provides state of the art innovative instruction and patient care. Simulation mannequins, a birthing simulator, recording devices and healthcare equipment are used for students training in a variety of medical fields and health care professions. We are very proud that programming at the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at Midland College includes collaboration with Midland Memorial Hospital and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at the Permian Basin. Our very own Dr. Gregory Bartha served as Chief Medical Director of HospiceMidland for many years, and ran a very busy local private practice. He has selflessly served on numerous nonprofit and educational boards, including our Midland College Foundation Board. Although most who retire do so with anticipation of more time to now be on the golf course, leisurely travels and time with the grandchildren, Dr. Bartha chose to open an emergency medical clinic in rural Uganda. There he sees many patients who live in extremely difficult situations. He treats patients, teaches and assists with services at the village church. His days are long, although you would never know it by listening to him speak of his devotion to the villagers. I know you will be as inspired by his enclosed story and the accompanying photographs as we are. Lastly, thank you again to each of you who has supported our Doctors Day Scholarship fund. Not only does this scholarship help our students pursuing a medical career, it honors our local physicians, as well. This program would not realize the success it does without the continuing efforts of Jann Weisenfeld. Thanks to your generous gifts, $29,080.00 was contributed to the scholarship. Thank you always for your friendship and support. We are looking forward to an exciting fall. Kathy Fletcher, Executive Director FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBERS President Richard T. McMillan, Esq. Her family moved to Amarillo, and she stayed until she got married. After her husband graduated from UT they moved to Midland. They subsequently divorced but Laurie, who calls Midland home, stayed and has lived here for 29 years. She has 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren. “They are the loves of my life. I love my children but grandchildren hold a special place in my heart,” she said. Laurie originally worked for America West Airlines when she moved to Midland, however when they pulled out she qualified for the Job Training Program Act. Using the Job Training Program Act, Laurie came to Midland College where she received her Associate Degree in Nursing and became an RN. She began her nursing career with Medical Center Hospital, in Odessa, in their neonatal ICU. She moved on to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Odessa as a case worker for their Maternal Infant Health Program. Laurie said, “We partnered with WIC to educate new mothers and help them find assistance for prenatal care. I had specialized training in breastfeeding education and Texas Health Steps.” Obstetrics has been Laurie’s passion since she worked for an OB-Gyn in Amarillo and he taught her to do sonograms. When she heard that Midland College was starting a Sonography program she signed up for the first class. After she graduated for the second time from MC, she went to work for Midland Memorial Hospital, in general ultrasound and registered in Obstetrics and abdominal ultrasound. “But again the call of the OB-Gyn field found me and I went to work for TTHSC Odessa doing high risk OB ultrasound. While there I received a certificate in fetal nuchal translucency screening,” she said. In 2007 she began her teaching career with MC as Clinical Director of the Sonography Program. She teaches Sonography of the Abdominopelvic Cavity, Sonography of OB/GYN, Sonography of Superficial Structures, Advanced Ultrasound Professionalism and Registry Review, and has taught Medical Terminology. Laurie loves to travel, and Europe has been her favorite place to visit. Most of her traveling has been done with the Lee High Chorale. What she enjoys most is seeing students go to places they might have never seen and watching them be amazed by history of other countries and our own country. Two years ago, Laurie had the privilege of traveling to the Russian country of Moldova. “It is a very poor country and we worked through a local church and seminary to distribute food to the elderly and we held a conference for the women of that country. One of my favorite memories of that conference was handing out the door prizes to the women. At first they were very shy about coming down front to see what they had won but by the second day they were practically running. They were poor people and very grateful for everything they received,” said Laurie. Laurie loves working with the state of the art simulation and ultrasound equipment in the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center, which she used last spring to help her daughter in Houston, teach her 7th grade science class human anatomy. “Get to know your instructors. We are here to help you be successful. We really want you to SUCCEED.” 2 MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION | SUMMER 2015 5 minutes with FACULTY “Work and study hard. Be the best and don’t settle for doing just enough. Work, accomplish and live your dreams.” LELAND HART was born in Ft. Stockton, and was adopted at the age of 3 by the Hart Family. He was raised in Denver City, where he graduated from high school. His mother was a homemaker who stayed home and took care of him and his younger brother. His dad was a roofer for 40 years, farmed and owned a boot and shoe sales/repair business before he retired. Leland attended Barean School of the Bible for ministerial studies. He later received his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in 1981 through the local EMS in Denver City, and then received Paramedic training though Howard College in Big Spring. Finally he completed and received an Associate of Science Degree from Midland College. He has tried his hand at many careers over the years, working as Supermarket Manager, in the Yoakum County Sheriff ’s Office, and in ministry in churches. He began working in the Emergency Medicine field as a part-time EMS driver until he received his EMT and then worked in EMS. He moved on to become a Paramedic for Ward County EMS and then became the Director. After Ward County, he began working for the Texas Department of State Health Services, headquartered in Midland as an Inspector/ Investigator, and finally moved to EMS Program Director at Midland College. Leland has been a part-time (intermittent) employee of the National Disaster Medical System on a Disaster Medical Assistance Team. The team responds to national catastrophic events and high profile national events. “I have worked several large scale disasters including the 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and Hurricane Katrina to name a few,” said Leland. He also worked with the team at Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002, President George W. Bush’s second inauguration, and the 2014 Republican Convention. His plans are to work at Midland College until he retires and then spend his summers with his daughter and grandbaby that is due to arrive in November, and the rest of the year with his son and daughter that live in Denver City and Lubbock and their children. Leland loves Midland College and “the people that I have worked with. I have the greatest coworkers in the world right here at MC. I love the family environment. MC’s reputation in the community and beyond is awesome and I’m glad to be a part of it.” SUMMER 2015 | MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 3 5 minutes with FACULTY CINDY MADEWELL was born in Bangor, Maine and is the oldest of three children. She is an Air Force brat and has lived in Maine, Louisiana, California, Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas! Her parents met on a blind date and were married for 50 years until her dad passed away. Cindy has two daughters, Haley, a junior at Texas A&M University, and Megan, who is a senior in high school. She has 2 dogs, Preston and Lucy and some rescued turtles in her backyard. After Cindy graduated from Broken Arrow High School, she went to Tulsa Junior College, where unfortunately she managed to fail out! She decided to go to travel agency school and worked for United Airlines as a gate agent and baggage handler for a while. She decided that wasn’t what she really wanted to do and returned to school at the University of Oklahoma, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation she worked for about 15 years as an ICU and recovery room nurse. It was then she decided that teaching was something she wanted to do so she went back to school again and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a Master’s of Nursing Education degree. Cindy is very involved at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Midland where she has taught religious education to middle school and high school students for about six years. She loves to travel, and her favorite thing to do is sit in the sun with a book (actually a Kindle) in her hand. Cindy said, “I was a big nerd growing up, preferring things like the library club, student council, and the cafeteria club (yes...that was a real thing).” One of her favorite aspects of her job is being able to give tours of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at Midland College. She gives tours to students of all ages and to members of the community. “It’s a beautiful facility with interesting pieces of equipment and mannequins that behave as humans. They blink, breathe, talk, have emergency medical conditions such as seizures, they bleed, and even throw up. It’s a fun place to be, and I like to think that some students will choose to become health care providers after seeing it in action,” she said. Her advice for new students is to be openminded and take the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and spiritually. Try to give back through service projects, and have fun along the way. Have a flexible end goal in mind, and know that grades are not the only thing that defines you as a person. “Oh, and text your mom every day.” 4 MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION | SUMMER 2015 5 minutes with FACULTY “Hard work and perseverance are far more important than the numbers on a standardized test (or what your third grade teacher may have said). If you really want something, want to achieve something, don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Just keep your eye on your goal and work for it.” DR. ELIZABETH NEICHTER grew up in the northern part of the Midwest enjoying summers on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and suffering through the glass shattering cold during the winter. She attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington and married a Kentuckian. “I came to love the spring here, and it was nice not to have too many below zero winters!” she said. Elizabeth went to graduate school at the University of Louisville and Spalding University, where she earned her doctorate. Her field of study was Health Information Management. She said, “It is the perfect career for someone who likes the challenges of the medical field without the handson direct patient care part.” She was the Director of a Health Information Management department at a hospital and then worked for a research physician and consulting firm before going into teaching. One of her favorite things is her German Shepherd dog, Chloe Faith, who can read. Chloe Faith knows 10 words - including the names of her two favorite toys. You just show her a flash card with the word on it and she’ll perform the action asked for. So, she can read SIT, DOWN, PLACE… as well as T-REX and PIGGY (her favorite toys). She also knows the basic colors- blue, red, yellow and green. If you ask her to bring you a red ball, she brings the red one. Ask for green and you get green. Elizabeth has been lucky enough to travel over the past few years with Africa being her favorite destination. She has been twice and is trying to figure out how to get back. “It is a magical place and being in the wild with elephants, lions, leopards and all the antelope is an unbelievable experience,” said Dr. Neichter. In the immediate future, Dr. Neichter will continue supporting the HIM department at Midland College. Elizabeth said, “I love Midland College because it is a place where students can bring their dreams and work to make those dreams come true in a supportive and caring environment. Education truly changes your life.” SUMMER 2015 | MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 5 5 minutes with FACULTY MR. ROBERT WEIDMANN was born at Holloman, A.F.B, in New Mexico, where his dad was stationed at White Sands Missile Range with the Navy. Shortly thereafter his family moved to Orange County, California, where he was raised. “There was a time while I was growing up that both of my parents worked at Disneyland and I got to go every day!” said Robert. Robert graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in Zoology and was then trained as a Respiratory Therapist in Long Beach California. He is Certified and Registered as both a Respiratory Therapist and as a Pulmonary Function Technologist, has a credential as a Neonatal/ Pediatric Specialist, and has had special training in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Wound Care. He has worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) in Orange, California; Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Long Beach, California; Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City, UT; Midland Memorial Hospital; and Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Robert says, “I have a terrific family. My amazing wife and I have 5 grown children (3 boys and 2 girls). I have 2 daughters-in-law and 2 sonsin-law. I also have 6, soon to be 7 grandchildren.” He loves sports and was able to have his education paid for by a baseball scholarship. His most unique trip was when he went to Afghanistan to help teach physicians about critical care medicine (particularly about mechanical ventilation). He lived in Kabul for about a month across the street from the Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, which is the premiere orthopedic and trauma surgery hospital in the country. He taught residents in surgery and internal medicine and occasionally students from the medical school. Robert loves to teach and learn, so he plans to do both as long as he can. “Use all the resources that are available. You are not in this alone. There are many people on campus ready and willing to help you succeed. There are also many services and programs which can and will be of great benefit to you.” 6 MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION | SUMMER 2015 STUDENTSPOTLIGHT R ichard Taylor was born in Midland, TX in 1973, and graduated from Midland High School. He was the youngest of three kids, with two sisters, 10 and 12 years older than him. His parents divorced when he was four years old but they remained good friends. Richie married a childhood friend when he was 21 years old and they had three children; Bryson 19, Blayne, 17, and Brittany 14. He went back to school at Midland College in 1996 and earned 19 credit hours but due to his growing family and hours at work he decided to stop going to school and focus on work. “I was definitely a nontraditional student,” said Richie. He became interested in Psychology after a lifelong battle with major depression. “Even when I was a small boy the littlest things would send me into dark regular periods of depression,” he said. When Richie was 33 years old, his mom was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently passed away. After that he went into a deep dark depression, during which he was working an extremely stressful job. Richie said, “You could say my grief, depression, stress, and money issues made the right ingredients for me to experiment with alcohol and drugs. I was hooked instantly. All of those feelings were instantly numb.” It might have seemed like it worked for a little bit, which can be common for many people at first. “But addiction always gets to a place where it doesn’t work,” said Richie. He became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He eventually lost his job and marriage. “I was so broken I had an overdose that put me into a coma for four days,” said Richie. His family was faced with the decision of putting him into a nursing home. Richie survived but he does have some lingering complications from the overdose. He was finally diagnosed properly with major depressive RICHARD TAYLOR disorder and has been getting the proper medical treatment since. “I would love to say that that incident got me sober but it did not. I had 2 or 3 more relapses after that. My recovery was not a perfect journey,” he said. Once he had some recovery under his belt, he decided to go back to Midland College and pursue a degree as an alcohol and drug counselor. Richie said, “I thought that if anyone could relate to another addict, alcoholic, or person suffering from depression, it could be me.” From the very first class he fell in love with the ADAC program at MC. Before he knew it, he had found his passion, Psychology. “I learned so much about myself, life, people, and my addiction. I can honestly say I don’t think I would be sober today without the knowledge I learned from Chesly Herd and her staff,” he said. One thing Richie learned is to get out of the “shaming game” from relapses. Chesly [Herd] taught him to pick himself up, brush himself off and to learn from the experience. During this time he also learned the importance of getting depression treated and about having a dual diagnosis, for example substance abuse and major depression, which he had suffered from. Richie made many great friends in the ADAC program, and stays in touch with them to this day. “I must say that the ADAC grads from MC who work in the recovery field are highly respected in the recovery community,” said Richie. His plans for the future are to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and possibly even a master’s degree, in order to be a family counselor. “The ADAC program at Midland College is a class act and it will definitely get you prepared to be a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor. I am proud to say that I have graduated Midland College and I’m now proud to be an alumni of Midland College,” said Richie. “I’m proud to say I graduated Midland College with a 3.74 GPA. Not bad for someone who’s brain should be fried as they say. I want people to know that addiction can happen to anyone, it happened to me at 33 years old. It happens to good people every day. If I survived addiction and major depression anyone can do this. There is hope and a solution. The number one weapon for me to battle addiction was to get educated about my disease.” MCCOMMUNITY DR. GREGORY BARTHA A Man of Medicine, Mission, and Miracles There are people in this world who we may aspire to be like because who they are as a person is one-of-a-kind, and for Midland, one of those people is Dr. Gregory Bartha. Dr. Bartha, was raised in Midland and graduated from Midland High School, and went on to attend Yale Medical School. After he received his Medical Doctorate, Dr. Bartha came back home to Midland, where has been a practicing physician for over 25 years. He has worked in many positions, most recently as the Chief Medical Director of HospiceMidland. After 13 years in this position, Dr. Bartha decided to use his skills and knowledge to help those in need in Uganda. Dr. Bartha began his mission work in Uganda on mission trips he took with his church, First Presbyterian Church of Midland. While he was in Uganda he witnessed the vital needs of the people and decided to find a way he could help. In November 2014, Dr. Bartha, along with another medical officer, and Pastor Mubbi Simon Peter of DEYWA Ministries opened an emergency medical clinic, Cross Emergency Medical Clinic, in rural Uganda. The clinic serves over 3,000 patients a month from different regions of Uganda that need 8 MIDLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION | SUMMER 2015 medical care. “My initial observation was that life is very hard for the people here. They are very poor and have few services available for them. Most engage in hard physical labor, they walk or bicycle long distances while sometimes carrying heavy loads. Electricity is in short supply and water wells are the only source of clean water,” said Dr. Bartha. While there are some government health clinics present in Uganda, there is very little access to medical supplies and the people have difficulty accessing them because of the transportation struggles they face. In addition to medical care, Dr. Bartha and his associates are providing health education and disease control for the vulnerable members of the rural communities, especially the mothers and children who are often the most affected groups. During the process of opening the clinic, Dr. Bartha has worked with Pastor Mubbi Simon Peter, a native Ugandan who has a degree in organization and management. Pastor Simon Peter rented a building that was suitable for the clinic, got supplies and staffing, and registered the clinic with the government health authorities. The process to get everything ready lasted about three months. They have plans for the near future to build a better facility for the clinic, do more medical outreach to different communities, and offer more surgical services. “It has been a joy for me to work with the people here. I have a great relationship with the young medical officer at the clinic. He has taught me much about the treatment of malaria and the different ways it can present. The teachers and pastors are so passionate about their work. They are providing valuable services with very limited resources. I am inspired and humbled by their hard work and dedication,” said Dr. Bartha. Dr. Bartha is living in a village about an hour from Mbale, the main city in the area. On a typical day for Dr. Bartha, a driver picks him up around 7:30 a.m. and takes him to a school where he teaches a basic health class. After he is done teaching he heads to the clinic to see patients. On a normal day there about 40 patients that come in for treatment. At the clinic there is a small ward where people who are more seriously ill are kept overnight and sometimes for several days, and Dr. Bartha checks in on them. He usually works until about 6 p.m. when the driver takes him back home. Dr. Bartha likes to spend his evenings reading, studying, and preparing for the next day. He “The best way [to volunteer] would be for people to travel to a third world country, preferably on a mission trip. My advice would be to go out to the villages, talk with the people about their problems, and see how they live.” frequently must travel to Mbale, the main city, to get medical supplies and to take patients to the regional hospital for additional treatment. On Sundays, Dr. Bartha helps with the services at Pastor Simon Peter’s church. Mission work has been important to Dr. Bartha for many years, and he hopes more people will volunteer their time to help. Dr. Bartha said, “The best way [to volunteer] would be for people to travel to a third world country, preferably on a mission trip. My advice would be to go out to the villages, talk with the people about their problems, and see how they live.” He is working on a blog where he is documenting his experience and thoughts (www.theformulavita.com), and will be making some presentations when he returns to Midland in late September of this year. Dr. Bartha has been a member of the Midland College Foundation Board since 2001.
