THE
SLATE
May 29, 2009
From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Students,
It is hard to believe it is the end of another school year. Each school year seems to go faster and faster.
Thank you for your partnership in making the 2008-2009 school year a successful one. We have a
wonderful staff that continues to make this a great place for learning each and every day. I am excited
to continue to build upon the many successes we have had at Orchard Park over the past couple of
years.
This past year was a very successful one for the Orchard Park Community. We made AYP this year
based upon PL 221. This is like winning the Super Bowl for schools. Of all Indiana schools, roughly fifty
percent made AYP. This is a significant accomplish for us and Carmel Clay Schools! We appreciate
your partnership in helping us reach our goal.
I would like to take this time to explain the extensive process we will use when placing children into
classrooms for the 2009-2010 school year. We will meet as a grade level to discuss the best placement
for each child. Your child’s current teacher will work with administration to place your child in the best
possible learning environment to meet each student’s individual needs. The yellow sheets that parents
had the opportunity to fill out will be considered when placing each child into a classroom. We are very
confident with the process we use when placing each child.
Please enjoy your summer and take time to relax and play! I wish you and your child a safe and
prosperous summer break! It is also very important to practice your reading over the summer. I always
encourage students to read a minimum of fifteen minutes a day over the summer break. Students could
also write in a journal, practice math facts, etc. to help maintain the learning that has taken place
throughout the year.
Once again, I thank you for a wonderful school year. I am excited for the 2009-2010 school year and the
many celebrations and successes that it will bring. Please feel free to contact me over the summer if you
have any questions.
Relax, Enjoy, and Celebrate!

A Message from our PTO President:

Dear OP Parents and Staff:
I cannot believe that another school year has gone by! I want to take a few minutes to thank all of our
volunteers throughout the year. Thank you to those who made events such as Fall Family Night,
Fall Fundraising, Hospitality and Teacher Appreciation Week, Muffins with Me, Classroom Parties,
the Taste of Carmel, and the 5th Grade Graduation Ceremony and Party happen! Thank you also to those who
worked on Box Tops and Soup Labels, Friday Fliers, Everybody Counts, and Spirit Wear! Thank you to each of
those parents who spent time in our classrooms helping out the students or joining them as chaperones on
Field Trips. Thank you to a WONDERFUL PTO Board who has been great to work with this year and has made
my 1st year as President seamless. Finally, I want to send out a big thank you to Heather Timmons who works
diligently to get the SLATE out to each of our families here at Orchard Park!
As we look to next year, we are always asking for help with these events. If you are interested in working on
any of these, please contact me over the summer and I can answer any questions you might have. We are still
in need of Chairpersons for Muffins with Me and the Ice Cream Social.
For those of you who are leaving Orchard Park, we wish you all the best! You will be missed. Have a GREAT,
FUN, and SAFE Summer and we will see you back here at Orchard Park in the Fall.
Sincerely,
Erin Patterson

Media Managers. Mrs. Quakenbush will need volunteers in the Media Center on a
regular basis in order to continue with her teaching and specials programs/
events. If you have a couple hours a week to volunteer in the OPE Media Center
next year, please call Mrs. Quakenbush at 776-1798 in June. She would like to
start planning right away. Volunteers will be checking in/out books as well as
