Stewardship Prayer
Shape me, O God, into your willing steward.
Guide me in prayer, lead me in service,
and open my heart as I share.
Help me, O God, to realize my gifts,
beginning with life itself, and know that
everything I have is a gift from you.
Guide me, O God, in the steps of your Son, Jesus.
Let me be on my faith journey
as he was in his: faithful and loving.
Renew in me your Spirit, O God,
That I may have the strength and courage
to be a better disciple.
Open my heart, O God, to all
members of Stella Maris parish,
its visitors and friends,
and to all of your people.
2
Dear Fellow Members of Stella Maris Parish,
The "2011-2012 fiscal" year was another great one for Stella Maris Parish
as we continue to become more united as a parish and in the work of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ while building his kingdom. We have
continued to do a good job maintaining our parish property. After having
studied the needs of the parish since consolidation and the means to meet
those needs, we moved ahead with some plans. We remodeled the kitchen
in Sister Bay to accommodate our parish wide events. The parking lot was
enlarged in Fish Creek so that we could better serve the big crowds attending mass in the summer. We laid the foundation for renovating the Baileys
Harbor basement for classrooms and better heating and cooling for parish
events. We put our land at the intersection of County Roads A and F up for
sale so that we can stop paying the property taxes of $1,600 per year since
we have no plans to use the land.
So much ministry has happened with new programs starting and existing
programs, either improving or moving forward . Overall our faith formation
had a great year. Not only did we do well with all of our youth but our
adults participated in a biblical study and discussion group. Our women
experienced a number of days of reflection and spiritual growth such as
heart spa and Seaside Escape. The faith formation on Washington Island is
really on fire. Not only are all of the children and youth involved in some
form of spiritual instruction but almost all of the adults participated in the
“Biblical Walk through the Mass.” Our Health and Wellness committee
began in earnest to help our parish be healthier. It has entered into cooperation with the Northern Door Health and Wellness Cabinet in education,
blood pressure screenings and transportation. Our Saint Vincent de Paul
Society was revitalized and is learning to live the spirituality of Saint Vincent de Paul which involves not only prayer but helping the poor and the
homebound and institutionalized. The prayer shawl ministry has restarted
with many new recruits and a new leader. A number of people participated
in a DVD scripture study. Many Hispanics have joined the parish and are
active in our faith formation and sacramental programs. The woman’s
CRHP has continued to do well with new recruits and energy to do other
ministry in the parish. Ecumenically, our parish hosted a renewed prayer for
Christian Unity which was a big success both in numbers and participation.
We also hosted a baccalaureate service which greatly affirmed our students
who were there.
In order to implement the pastoral letter of the bishop on renewing our
parishes, the pastoral council decided to have the goals of improving our
worship and our outreach to youth. The first goal was one shared by many
in the diocese and around the world. With the universal church in English
speaking countries, we implemented the new Roman Missal and had a good
experience after preparation with the new mass settings and ministry changes. We had a great experience with the presentation that Sister Ann Rehrauer gave us which reached many people of every age. With the second goal,
we also tried a few new youth activities such as Fr. Jewel talking to the
youth and parents with pizza and break dancing. We were especially
blessed to have a number of youth attend a mission trip in Michigan which
was valiantly led by our faith formation director Mary Ellen Waldvogel.
On a sad note, we had to eliminate our pastoral associate position. It is
first of all difficult for me to lose Sister Angela Palm because she has been
working by my side for many years helping me greatly. It is also difficult
for me as pastor to do my job well when I lose the help of good staff, in this
case aid in keeping track of our people in need. The reason why we eliminated the position was that we could no longer fit it into the budget. Financially, we are not doing as well as we should do to keep our parish staffed as
well as it needs to be staffed. We are doing well enough to keep things
going as well as is necessary for now. Improving our stewardship needs to
be a continuing priority going forward. On the bright side, we have added
some good new givers. Our bishop’s appeal has continued to be met even
though it has risen for the last few years. Our Spring Fling and Youth Alive
Steak and Shrimp dinner were big successes. Our bulletin continues to
provide great pictures on the front cover and be very attractive to everyone
who picks it up to read it as well as informative. Our website is great as
well in its information but even more in the way that the photographs are
continually updated.
Overall, once again we did a great job helping many people to worship
from our parish and also from all over the world. We formed people in faith
of all ages as well as possible under the circumstances. We ministered to
those in need spiritually, pastorally and financially. We provided extremely
competent management of our community and facilities as we care for the
financial and administrative aspects of our parish. During the last year,
many people ministered in collaboration with me, the pastoral staff and
overall parish leadership to provide ministry which hopefully opens up our
parish in such a way that we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us bringing us closer together as the body of Christ in the Father’s love. Of course
our inspiration is our patron, Stella Maris. She was always humble and
obedient to God’s will. She told God through the angel; let it be done to me
according to your will. The Holy Spirit worked through her to not only
bring Jesus into the world but to help him to establish his church with the
help of the Father’s love. She continues to lead people to her Son to this day
under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the unconditional love originating in the Father. With her help and inspiration, we cannot go wrong but
only closer to our ultimate goal in God.
In Christ’s love,

WORDS
Four things you can't recover:
Total Health Care
We are called to prayer, to talk to our God about what
is happening in our lives. Placing our health concerns
before our loving God must be a part of our total health
care-right up there with doctor’s visits and our medicines, Prayer is just what the doctor should order.
The stone........after the throw.
The word.........after it's said..
The occasion.........after it's missed.
The time..........after it's gone.
-from Hope and Help for living with illness
Living in the Moment
Always have a firm and determined intention of wanting to serve God with all your heart for your whole
life. Do not be concerned about tomorrow and think
only about doing good today. When tomorrow comes
and is called “today,” then you can think about it.
-from Padre Pio’s Spiritual Direction for Every Day
Waste of Time
Any mental picture of your life that focuses on past
sins is a lie and thus comes from the devil. Jesus loves
you and has forgiven you your sins, so there is no room
for having a downcast spirit. Whatever persuades you
otherwise is truly a waste of time.

Parish Councils and Committees
Pastoral Council - The Pastoral Council works cooperatively with
the Pastor in order to determine and coordinate the priorities, goals,
programs, services and organizations of the parish.
Meeting Schedule: The second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm
Contact Person—Marv Leppert Phone #—920-854-2546 Email

Finance Council - The role of the Finance Council is to advise the
Pastor on finances and matters involving the physical assets of the
parish. During the past year, projects completed include parking lot
expansion at the Fish Creek site and kitchen renovations at the Sister Bay site. We obtained approval from the Diocese to sell the
property at A and F so we have engaged a real estate agent to try to
sell it. We determined that former Wagner house on Highway 42 in
Sister Bay was not worth keeping and we have proceeded with
plans to have it removed from the site. We have also learned that
the State is interested in purchasing the Friex house in Sister Bay as
part of the highway improvement project. We will be negotiating
with the State for a price in the coming year.
During 2011-2012 we did the planning work for the renovation of
the education center and heating system at Baileys Harbor. The
work included installation of more energy efficient heating equipment, improved air circulation, and insulation to improve energy
efficiency and reduce our energy costs for this site. This work is
nearing completion and will soon be ready for religious education
classes. New projects we are studying include floor and pew refinishing at Baileys Harbor, and installation of wood flooring at Egg
Harbor,
The organ at Baileys Harbor needs to be replaced. We are working
with the Liturgy Committee to plan the best use of our resources
and provide the best possible worship experience. To this end, the
large organ at Egg Harbor will be moved to Baileys Harbor, and a
smaller, used organ will be purchased for Egg Harbor.
Many of the activities of the Finance Council seem mundane but are
necessary for an organization with facilities. These include things
like lawn maintenance, snow removal, cleaning, insurance, and
building repairs. To this end, we need an active and involved buildings and grounds committee. Anyone who is able and willing to
help would be appreciated.

Worship and Spiritual Life Committee - This parish committee
prepares the parish liturgies and coordinates the various liturgical
ministries of the parish. With six different worship sites within
Stella Maris Parish, full-time and seasonal parishioners, and a multitude of visitors, it takes much organization to coordinate the following ministries each and every week to provide a cohesive and
unified parish worship: Altar Servers, Art & Environment, Cantors,
Choir Members, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion,
Hospitality (Ushers and Greeters), Musicians, Readers and Sacristans.
Guided by the documents of the Church, (primarily the General
Instructions of the Roman Missal), directives from Bishop Ricken,
and the leadership of our pastor, Fr. Dave, the committee strives to
provide quality liturgies parish-wide that inspire people to actively
and fully participate in them. Our goal at Stella Maris Parish is that
which has been given us by Fr. Dave and the Pastoral Council in the
vision statement: to provide quality liturgical services.
In addition to our weekend Masses, we also help prepare liturgies
and services for the times of the Church year: Advent, Lent, Triduum, Easter, major Solemnities, Feast and Holy Days along with
Ecumenical Services with the other Christian churches in Northern
Door County.
Our committee usually meets the First Tuesday of each month at 1:30
pm at the Parish Office in Egg Harbor. Current chairperson is Mary
Gomoll, email: [email protected].
Stewardship Committee-A main focus of the Stewardship Committee
is to reach out to parish members and promote participation through
prayer, service and sharing resources. Accordingly, the Committee
developed and mailed an Annual Commitment Form to all parish
members. In such difficult times,
we are pleased with our response. Results will be used to
plan events, involve parishioners, and develop fellowship
bonds among members. With six
different sites to maintain, this is
imperative to our Parish.
Christian Service and Responsibility Committee- This has been a
very busy year for our committee. Along with the Health and
Wellness Committee we have been able to accomplish quite a
bit. We are looking forward to many new initiatives in the
coming year.
This year we will continue to support the following:
Loaves and Fishes meal - we serve over 80 each month. Feed
My People Collection
Funding for the following: JAK's Place, Hispanic Resource
Center, HELP of Door County, Neighbor to Neighbor, Community Clinic, Northern Door Children Center, Nor Door Adult
Day Services, Scandia Village, Habitat for Humanity, and the
Boys and Girls Club.
Assistance for many individuals and families in need. We are
now working with the local St. Vincent DePaul chapter to handle these requests.
We continue to support the Altrusa and Backpack Buddy programs that provide supplies, clothing and snacks for the weekend to children in need.
Our Respect Life subcommittee continues to keep us aware of
social issues relevant to us.
Our Health and wellness Committee has grown dramatically
this year. They now provide many services to our parish and
community:
Blood pressure testing after masses and at Loaves and Fishes
meals.
Presenting education programs through monthly presentations
to the community. They also have provided educational information on Health and Wellness in the weekly bulletin.
Transportation for those in need.
During the past year the parish, through the CSR, made a dramatic effect beyond Door County by continuing to support the
orphanage in Africa as well as other projects through the Catholic Foundation in Green Bay.
We now have web pages on the Stella Maris website for both
the CSR and Health and Wellness Committees. Go to the website for Stella Maris at www.stellamarisparish.com. Additional
information about the CSR can also be obtained by contacting
our Chair Jan Liss [email protected]

It was just 5 days and then we returned to Door County.
This year we began the year with the first ever Mass with
Bishop, Ricken, which was a first for our Diocese.
Nine parishes were involved. It was a great dream of mine and Fr.
Dave allowed me to accomplishment it and for that I will be forever
thankful to Father. Thanks again. Mary Ellen Waldvogel

Care Ministry Program “As Care Ministers, following the example of Jesus, we
reach out with meaningful support one on
one to all who are experiencing loss, illness
or isolation.”
Worship and Music Ministry
2011-2012

Worship and Music encompasses just about every aspect of our parish
community: From weekend and daily liturgies, weddings, funerals,
special liturgies, Reconciliation, Ecumenical prayer services,….you
name it….almost every ministry in our parish involves worship and
music.
Funeral preparations Sr. Angela Palm met with families
whose loved one has died to plan the funeral mass, which includes choosing the readings, hymns & people to do the various liturgical roles. Bereavement letters are sent to the families
during holidays. You can also preplan your own funeral mass
as well.
As Stella Maris Worship and Music Minister, my ministry is to implement the liturgical vision of our pastor, Fr. Dave Ruby and that of our
parish leadership. That vision is to provide quality parish liturgies
within the directives and guidelines set by the Church; to do so while
respecting the past and moving into the future, all the time continuing
to bring together all who worship with us into a cohesive and vibrant
faith community.
Responsibilities
Visit assigned person monthly
Attend monthly ongoing formation meetings
Registration of new parish members is done by appointment.
We want to meet and welcome everyone who joins as well as
answers questions & discuss stewardship options.
Education/Faith Formation:
We began our classes in late September and our students kept
coming until way into October and then things settled down.
This time of the year is very broken up with teachers convention, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In spite of this
we did celebrate First Reconciliation in December with supper
to follow. It’s wonderful to celebrate the great forgiveness the
Lord gives us. On December 7th we participated in the crib
lightening in Baileys Harbor and the Knights treated us with
chicken booya and hot chocolate. This past year we had many
positive experiences. One such experience was a light service
for our reconciliation evening during Advent. The students who
wanted to participate were part of the Gospel again this Christmas in Sister Bay. We continued working in our classes each
week learning more and more about God and our church.
On April 11th our middle school students went to Scandia to
visit the people there. This was a first for the middle school.
On April 18th we hosted Fr. Jewel, thanks to Joan Schulz’s
great work. He had a great message for the students plus entertained the students with his dancing. He was gracious enough
to wait for our High School students who were surprised, but
amazed.
We ended the year with our first ever Mission Trip to, St. Joseph’s Michigan. Maddy, Jenny, Alisa, and I left Door County
in June for a 5 day trip. Our mission took us to a center for elderly people and school that had now become an elderly center
which provided exercise, quilting, painting, computer, and art
classes. It was extremely hot but we pulled weeds, cleaned
refrigerators, and interacted with the elderly people who used
the facility. The girls and I enjoyed ourselves and the other
Accomplishing that, especially given our five different peninsula
churches, our parishioners on Washington Island, our seasonal parishioners plus our influx of visitors is quite the
challenge! With the help of all of our faithfilled, generous and dedicated ministers and
that of our parish patron, Stella Maris, Our
Lady Star of the Sea, we are working towards our unifying goal.
Worship encompasses all the liturgical ministries of our parish: Altar Servers, Art &
Environment, Cantors, Choir Members,
Commentators, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Hospitality (Ushers and Greeters), Readers, Musicians and Sacristans. A
huge aspect of my job is to provide current liturgical information, and
on-going communications to enable all to carry out their ministry effectively in service to God.
Working together with our Worship & Spiritual Life Committee, we
prepare parish-wide liturgies that respond to the needs of our congregation.
Listed below are several accomplishments in the areas of Worship and
Music from this past fiscal year: July, 2011through June, 2012 built
upon those of the previous four years:

First Annual Ecumenical Docks-ology Service at Anderson Dock
in Ephraim-July, 2011
 First Stella Maris Feast Day Outdoor Mass, July 2011
 Joint Worship & Faith Formation Presentation by Sr. Ann
Rehrauer, about the revisions to the Roman Missal, November, 2011
 Training and successful implementation of the revisions to the
Roman Missal begun the first weekend of Advent, 2011.
8

First Annual Ecumenical Service of Christian Unity, January, 2012 hosted by Stella Maris
 Lenten Mission with Vivien Williams, February, 2012
 Triduum at Stella Maris, Sister Bay, April, 2012 with liturgical ministers from all our peninsula churches.
 Music Concert and Fundraiser by Paul Koelske, May, 2012
 First Annual Ecumenical Baccalaureate Service, May, 2012
Development and implementation of Parish-Wide Worship Guide
that included all revised prayers, congregation Reponses and
Mass setting all complete in one document, Memorial Day weekend, 2012.
The above examples are only a small amount of everything we
are working on to bring our Stella Maris Community together in
Worship and Music.
Our goal is that liturgy at Stella Maris will inspire us to live the
Gospel message and with confident prayers to our parish patron,
we know our goals will be accomplished.
Respectfully and joyfully,
Kathy Sedan

Spiritual Renewal Ministry
Morning Prayer
We have a faithful community who gather each Monday at 8am,
for Morning Prayer in Fish Creek. When Fish Creek was closed
Jan.-March, we gathered in Sister Bay. We are blessed with nine
presiders (women and men), who lead Morning Prayer with inspiring reflections.

St. Michaels Altar Society
St. Michael's Altar Society meets the third Thursday of months
April through January. Meetings are held at 1:00 pm in the social
hall at the Jacksonport site. New members will be welcomed.
Feel free to attend any of our meetings.
Our major fundraiser was again the brat sales at Welsings in
Valmy. We also collect our Econo Food slips as a source of
funds.
Next year we will be considering bake sales.
10
Our group works with building and grounds to keep the flower
beds attractive and blooming. This will be continuing next year
and will focus on the north side of the building. We donated a
bench to provide outdoor seating for summer overflow attendees.
All the benches were seal coated in an effort to keep them attractive for a longer period of time. We also contributed to the printing for the coffee-table book the parish is sponsoring. The stations of the cross were re-done and the altar society paid the cost.
Members take turns providing fresh flowers during the summer
months.
Our Giving Tree had three recipient's: The Justice Center for their
GED program, a family in need, and the Hispanic Resource Center. We received thank you cards from all and they indicated how
much the financial assistance was appreciated.
As indicated, new members are always welcome.
Once again we hosted a lovely fashion show and luncheon which
is attended by women from various churches throughout the area.
The fashions are presented by local merchants and we are most
grateful to all of them for this support each year.
We are having a difficult time finding ladies to take on the responsibility of the offices of secretary and treasurer, without
someone stepping up to fill these positions we may have to disband this sodality. May God Bless all of you who have support
the sodality in the past and all of you ladies that have worked so
hard for so many years to keep all of the traditions alive. Thank
you.

St. Rosalia’s Sodality
The ladies of St. Rosalia's Sodality had another big year. The
Annual Christmas Party at Kristofers was a huge success attended
by many.
Sadly we served at a number of funeral lunches including those
of some of our own members. The big event is always the Strawberry Fest, and it was big again this past June.
We served over 400 strawberry shortcakes and sold raffle tickets
for some very nice prizes. Many people baked some wonderful
things for the bake sale which was a huge success.
The money from the strawberry fest enabled us to give 3 college
scholarships and 2 continuing education scholarships from the
Hedy Eller Scholarship Fund. We continue to support our little
boy "Kevin" in Honduras through the CFCA which is Father
Mauthie's pet project.
Always aim to show kindness and seek to do
good to one another and to everybody.
Thessalonians 5:15
Ladies make soup and serve bread and soup after stations of the
cross on the Friday's during lent.
A talent is a talent until it is used to serve God.
At that point it becomes a gift of ultimate value, multiplying every time we use it.
In man’s eyes it may seem insignificant, in God’s eyes, you are a superstar.

STELLA MARIS PARISH
ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES
December 15, 2011
Called order by Fr. Dave with a reading from Thessalonians and Stella Maris Prayer
Meeting called to order by Marv Leppert. Pastoral and Finance Council members introduce themselves. Leppert referred to Annual report that contained minutes of October 30 2010 annual meeting,
Richard Dannhausen moved to approve, Marian Irmen seconded. Led us through the reports contained within.
Catherine Gerdmann stated that it appears some things are listed by the various groups but is not all comprehensive and perhaps it should
be noted in the report that some things are not listed. Gerdmann pointed out that the heading stated items below are given to the poor that
was misleading as to what was actually printed under each listed group’s report.
Father stated the report was intended to show how charitable the parish is.
The question was raised, where does Christian Service and Responsibility Committee money come from. Father Dave stated it is budgeted
but this group does have fund raisers. There is a special envelope that allows for that committee’s use. The committee has taken on
Health and Wellness, and donating funds to charities. Fr. Dave explained if persons come to the parish for help, Sr. Palm contacts the appropriate County departments, and if the County has been helping the applicant, then Sr. Palm makes a decision for the needs to be provided by the parish.
Question on item 750 cost increase of faith formation. Response was more students, more books, and Christ Renews His parish is cost
shared at 50%.
Question on item 775- Other purchases. The Sodalities purchases are some times placed in here, but within each sodalities fund the detail
is listed.
Question on footnotes. Jim Slomski explained he has to move everything out of Capitol at year end.
Question on item 490. What is ATM – Advancing the Mission.
Question on item 460 - Bulletin Revenue – collected by the representative for bulletin ads.
Question on item 820 – Equipment repairs – furnaces, air conditioning at Friex house, roof repairs at Sister Bay,
Jim Slomski explained different accounting practices the parish must undergo.
Dick Dannhausen moved to approve the financial report, seconded Dick Brabson.
It was decided to put out a report for general pickup.
Fr. Dave spoke that the parish is doing well. vibrant with worship. Our Faith Formation program has grown. Longing for the Holy and
CRHP both have been very active. Buildings and Grounds are being maintained as well as we can. We still have savings. Our current
year income is struggling and we’ll see how we come out at the end of the current year. We are continually seeking to meet the needs of
the future. Bishop Ricken is pleased how we are doing.
Kathy Gerdman referenced Fr. Dave’s introductory letter which stated some churches do better in difficult times because they value God
and Church more, and that statement might lead one to think the Catholics don’t value their church as much as the protestants. Fr. Dave
replied that some of the protestant churches at times give more in bad times and yet our parish is not doing well. Gerdmann stated that
perhaps that statement discourages people from giving more.
Fr. explained protestants are asked to give specific amounts and they give, whereas Catholics only give 1 percent of their income and
protestants give 2%. Why is that?
How do we challenge our parishioners to give more? Fr. Dave stated he has spoken with surrounding pastors and learned that their parishes are holding up. We learned at the convocation this year, the really good Catholics know that they are supposed to give, the less strong
Catholics give less. Fr. Stated he needs to talk about general parish stewardship more and explain it more.
Fr. Dave thanked those in attendance for coming and he is very grateful for everything everyone does and we will continue to do great work
as we move forward.
About 20 persons were in attendance.
