Your Tutor… I am a successful Harrogate based Milliner designing and making bespoke headwear for clients as commissions and also hiring out over 250 individually made pieces from my studio overlooking the famous Harrogate ‘Stray’ on West Park. I can tutor in all aspects of millinery, working with; felt, straw, sinamay, veiling, fabric covered shapes, dyeing of materials, handmade flowers and bead work. I can also run courses on a range of different aspects of hat making; blocking, creation of fascinators, headpieces, cocktail hats, bridal, perchers, pill boxes, wedding and race hats. The Studio is filled with designs from which you can gleam inspiration and use as examples to study different techniques. Please get in touch for specific or private course requirements. Course Details • Courses will be held at ‘Millinery on Two, 20 West Park, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 1BJ, (Please enter via Lynx Womenswear) • Day Courses run from 9/9.30am to 3pm/3.30pm or half day courses from 9.30am to 12.30pm or 1 til 4pm • A maximum of 5 students will be taken per course in order to give individual attention • Tea/coffee and biscuits are provided • Lunch can be either brought with you or ordered from the nearby deli for an additional cost. You will be introduced to millinery materials and shown examples of different technique from our collection. You will also have the chance to try on different hat shapes and be guided on the styles which best suit you. You will make basic sinamay trimmings and learn how to attach them to a head fixing. By the end of the workshop you will have created a headpiece and acquired skills to make more. What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. Suitable for beginners. Hand Blocked Felt Cocktail Hat (2 days) • • Wed/Thur 25th & 26th Nov Thurs/Fri 28th & 29th Jan This is the perfect course for those who want to take their skills to the next level. You will learn how to block a small felt hat using the traditional method of hand blocking with pins and steam. You will then learn how to line the inside with a petersham edging . You can choose from the skills learn’t on the course to trim your percher. The techniques covered include; feathers, felt flowers, bias strips, felt leaves, quills, felt or fabric bows, and veiling. Finally your design will be finished with elastic, band or comb and be ready to wear... What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. Suitable for beginners, improvers and advanced Course fees £175 for the two days and £20 for materials Make a Fabric Flower (1/2 • • day) Wed 16th am Sept Wed 27th Jan pm This course is for individuals who would like to learn the process of silk and fabric flower making. You will learn how to stiffen different fabrics, create petal templates and be introduced to all the techniques used for making different types of flower petals. You will also be shown different stamen and centres for your silk or fabric flowers. Choose from 100’s of colours of silk and fabric to create a flower/flowers of your own. Your bespoke flower can then be attached to a hair comb or corsage clip. What is needed? Lots of imagination Suitable for beginners through to advanced. Course fees Course fees are £65 plus £10 materials Re-invent, Re-new, Re-trim Upcycle your Winter Hat (1 day) Thurs 5th Nov • Tues 19th Jan • Bring along a shaped winter hat, which could be felt, leather, tweed or fabric and upcycle it into something really special. You will learn how to make suitable winter trims from felt and tweed in order to add loops, flowers, feathers or bows. Work with a choice of felt, leather, feathers or petersham to make your design special and go away with the skills to re-invent more hats. What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. You will learn how to make flowers, leaves, bows and other trims from felt, tweed, velvet and veiling plus explore using pheasant feathers to trim. You will go away with sample trims and the knowledge to make more. What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. Suitable for improvers through to advanced. Course fees £85 and £15 for materials Course fees £85 and £15 for materials Before Explore Winter Trims (1 day) After Hand Blocked Silk Cocktail Hat (2 days) • Tues/Wed 10th & 11th Nov • Tues/Wed 1st & 2nd March This is the perfect course for those who want to expand their knowledge of blocking. You will learn how to block using buckram which will then be covered with ice wool and silk. Trims will be taught dependent on previous experience and the requirements of the group but they can included, handmade flowers, silk loops, bows and many other techniques. You will learn how to line the inside with a petersham edging and create a couture lining for the inside of your hat. Fabulous Feathers (1 day) • • Thurs 8th Oct Thurs 3rd March During the day you will learn several ways of manipulating feathers such as cutting, curling, twisting and forming flowers. An introduction to different types of feathers will provide the basis for your design including, goose, hackle, turkey, ostrich and peacock amongst others. This is the perfect course if you have always wanted to make your own feather headpiece or trim a shape with feathers. You will have the option to add other textures to your design including, swarovski crystals and complimentary trims. Finally, your design will be finished with elastic, band or comb and be ready to wear... What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. This is a very comprehensive course where you will learn how to make silk and fabric flowers, fabric leaves, silk and sinamay bows, hand rolled soft sinamay trims, flower sprays, feather flowers, feather arrangements, petersham flowers and trims, lace trims, veiling and how to incorporate beading into your design. You will go away with sample trims ready to adorn your hats and headpieces and the knowledge to make more. What is needed? A basic sewing kit and lots of imagination. Course fees £175 for the two days and £20 for materials Advanced Millinery Flower Workshop (1 day) • • Thurs 15th Oct Thurs 10th March This is the perfect course if you have always wanted to make a variety of flowers to adorn your headpiece or corsage. You will learn how to create a variety of silk/organza and velvet flowers and leaves using traditional French flower making tools. In addition you will create 2 different sinamay flowers and a variety of feather flowers. You will also be shown how to make french petersham flowers. You will leave with examples of all the techniques and with the skills to continue to create more. What is needed? Course fees are £85 for the day and £15 for materials Course fees Before After £175 for the two days and £20 for materials Beaded Hair Vine Workshop(1 day) • • Tues 13th Oct, Wed 4th Nov, Fri 27th Nov Wed 10th Feb, Fri 18th March Use of a variety of beads to create a unique hair piece, which will be perfect for black tie or bridal. You will learn techniques including; beaded flowers and leaves, wiring a hair vine, creating tiny silk flowers and lace detail to include in your design and how to make a bird cage veil. Once you have mastered all the techniques they will be used to design your own bespoke beaded adornment. What is needed? This course is taught by Marie Halewood our bridal designer Course fees £85 for the day and £15 for materials, (included in the materials will be 10 small and 10 medium bi-cone Swarovski crystals and an assortment of other beads. Additional Swarovski's will be charged at cost.) Hand blocked felt trilby and trim (2 days) • • Tues/Wed 20th & 21st Oct, Tues/Wed 17th & 18th Nov Wed/Thurs 20th & 21st Jan This is the perfect course for those who want to create a hat to wear everyday. You will have the choice from a variety of trilby crowns and brims. You will learn to block felt and join the crown to the brim. You can choose from the skills learn’t on the course to trim your trilby. The techniques covered include, felt flowers and loops, feather mounts and other felt based adornments. What is needed?
