With much of it named to the National Register of Historic Places, Jo Daviess County offers visitors a wealth of well preserved
19th century storefronts, homes, churches, hotels, train depots, town halls, cemeteries and other historic points of interest, all found along
historic Main Streets and scenic country roads.
Apple River
East Dubuque
Located on historic Stagecoach Trail, once a
stagecoach route from Chicago to Galena, Apple
River was established by the Illinois Central Railroad
in 1854. This little village, surrounded by dairy
farms and corn fields, still reflects the atmosphere
and charm of rural Illinois. The Millville historic site
is located within the Apple River Canyon State
Park. And the beautifully landscaped grounds of
Oak Hill farm are a popular location for destination
weddings. The property is home to a charming,
restored 1860s church that seats 200 and a
restored one-room schoolhouse that was built in the 1850s.
East Dubuque clings to the Mississippi bluffs and spreads along its flats. The
7,392-foot Julien Dubuque Bridge, named for one of the community’s first
settlers, remains one of the longest tied-arch and cantilevered spans ever built.
Some of East Dubuque’s first permanent settlers are laid to rest in the Frentress
Family Cemetery, and Gramercy
Park is the site of 26 ceremonial and
burial mounds from the Hopewell
Native American culture. The city
also boasts a grand example of fine
Italianate architecture. Built in 1867,
this painstakingly renovated mansion
is now an elegant bed-and-breakfast.
Elizabeth
Galena
Elizabeth, with its rich farmlands and an historic Main Street, bills itself as “The
Heart of Jo Daviess County.” Its Washington Street is lined with lead miners’
cottages, six homes that pre-date the Civil War. Despite the addition of porches
and other rooms, each structure retains its original box-like core on a stone
foundation. The 1894 Commercial Hotel on Myrtle Street served as the dinner
stop for the Chicago Great
Western Railway’s overnight
train between Chicago and
Minneapolis during the 1920s.
And the Elizabeth Historical
Society’s Chicago Great
Western Railway Depot Museum
is housed nearby in the restored
train depot.
From the early to mid-1800s, Galena was a mining, smelting and steam
boating center and one of the busiest ports on the Mississippi River. During
the Civil War, nine Union Army generals hailed from Galena, including
Ulysses S. Grant, later the country’s 18th president. But the arrival of the
Illinois Central Railroad in 1854 began the city’s decline and it became
a quiet, backwater town.

the 1960s by preservationists
who restored her grand
old buildings. Now this
charming city on the Galena
River delights visitors with
its 19th century history and
architecture.

Hanover
Scales Mound
A drive down Hanover’s Jefferson Street takes visitors past 19th century
buildings housing antiques shops, a costume shop, an art gallery, an
ice cream parlor, services, casual pubs and more. The town’s oldest
standing building can be found along this thoroughfare…a brick
structure that was built in 1844 and now houses a local supermarket.
A side trip off onto Monroe Street brings visitors to the United Methodist
Church, constructed
in 1891, and the
Hanover Town Hall.
The main portion of
this town hall was
erected in 1848, with
an addition built in
1883.
A full 90 percent of the village of Scales Mound is listed in the National
Register of Historic Places. Its proximity to the Wisconsin state line and Charles
Mound, the highest elevation in Illinois at 1,235 feet, has born the proud
slogan: “At the Top of Illinois.” The village was begun in 1853 when the
Illinois Central Railroad arrived, with most of the houses built by retired miners
and farmers, many from
England and Germany.

Stockton
Warren
Stockton is the birthplace of the Kraft Corporation, with the first cheese
plant opened here by J.L. Kraft in
1914. The building now houses the
Stockton Cheese Company, producer
of Kraft Swiss cheese. The village also
boasts a small but thriving downtown
historic district anchored by the
Stockton Heritage Museum, in a newly
restored 1890s building, and a variety
of shops, pubs, a community theatre,
lodging properties and services. And
a popular local eatery (famous for its
homemade pies) boasts its original
1890s tin ceiling and is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Northeast along scenic Stagecoach Trail is the Warren commercial district,
also listed on the National Register. Warren’s historic downtown now houses
a number of antiques shops and cafés. Visitors can stop at the Warren
Community Building, a pre-Civil War structure that was once a stagecoach
stop and is now used for community events. Nearby, a restored 150-year-old
hotel is now a popular
restaurant and an 1890s
Victorian home serves
as a B&B. And Major
League outfielder Abner
Dalrymple was laid to
rest in a local cemetery
on Jan. 25, 1939,
when he died at the age
of 81.

The Wonders of Jo Daviess County
“Who was Jo Daviess?” you might ask. He was a man of courage, wisdom and
strength. While his fame was not legendary, it was prominent in northwest Illinois. Born
Joseph Hamilton Daviess on March 4, 1774, in Bedford County, Virginia, he moved
with his parents to Danville, Kentucky, at a young age. Admitted to the state’s bar in
1795, he went on to serve as the United States district attorney for Kentucky. In 1811,
Daviess volunteered to serve in the Indiana militia but was killed later that year while
leading a charge against the Indians in the Battle of Tippecanoe. His bravery and
intelligence earned him the rank of colonel.
Then in 1827, the flow of population into northwest Illinois, mostly into the Galena area
lead mines, encouraged the state legislature to form a new county. After much debate,
the name “Jo Daviess County” was offered in Daviess’ honor.
