SCOOTER SMART. WHAT IS IT?
ROAD SMART. SCOOTER SMART.
LICENCE SMART.
Scooters are a fun, stylish and inexpensive form of
personal transport. A Scooter is a two wheeled vehicle
with a step-through platform for the operator’s feet to rest
on while ridden.
Due to their relatively smaller size, scooters can be hard
to see by drivers of motor vehicles especially in heavy
traffic. The following tips will help you keep safe when
“scootering”
Queensland Licence requirements
Scooters are fun, easy to ride and
inexpensive to operate.
This brochure is aimed at Scooters with engine capacities
between 50cc and 300cc. (A scooter with an engine
capacity of greater than 50cc falls under motorcycle road
regulations and a scooter with an engine capacity of less
than 50cc is re-named a Moped for ease of distinction and
falls under road regulations for Class C drivers).
Maintain a position within your lane that allows for
maximum visibility, do not weave
If in doubt about something or someone up ahead,
slow down and prepare to stop
Keep enough distance between yourself and the
vehicle in front of you to identify surface hazards
such as; edge traps and potholes
Obey speed limits
Mopeds and Scooters with 50cc engines or less:
Anyone with a Class C (car) licence may legally ride
50cc scooters.
Scooters with engine capacity greater than 50cc:
Require an automatic motorcycle licence. All persons
must hold a Class C (car) licence for a minimum of 12
months and be 18 years or older to be eligible to apply
for an automatic motorcycle licence.
To learn more about obtaining a Drivers Licence or
information about Codes and Classes contact
www.tmr.qld.gov.au or phone 13 23 80.
Ride with the flow of traffic
Use extra caution at intersections, carpark
entrances, exits and driveways and people exiting
vehicles
Do not ride on the footpath
Ensure you are well protected with boots (slip
resistant), jeans, gloves, helmet, jackets with
protective armour and eye protection as a
minimum of protective gear, no matter how warm
the weather
Scooters are easy to ride
Scooters are made to be convenient, functional and
simple for any person to ride. They are automatic, light
weight, have a lower centre of gravity as well as under
seat storage space.
A great alternative
Licensing, registration and insurance requirements are
less expensive than cars and scooters are easy to park.
Scooter smart
Scooters are easy to maintain and inexpensive to own
and have great re-sale value. They offer an affordable
and flexible form of personal transport for journeys which
are difficult to be undertaken by other sustainable modes
such as walking or cycling. Scooters also offer significant
environmental advantages over the private motor vehicle.
