TRAINING October 2015 Introduction • Introduced commercially in 2002 • Over 180 variations available worldwide • Over 50,000 kits sold • Experienced exponential growth Unique • Only commercially available throttle control worldwide that is purpose designed to fit model specific motorcycles Features • Replaces original right-side bar weight with a throttle lock that matches the original bar weight style • Recent patent approvals in USA ; enforced globally • Specially designed castellated friction nut is highly functional even with heavy winter gloves • Simple and effective set screw friction adjustment Fly by Wire • To quote a customer with an electronic cruise control and ‘Fly by Wire’ throttle system • “ Riding with my electronic control disengaged, I had a really difficult time avoiding varying throttle openings, particularly at slow speeds over bumpy terrain, and I found myself with a death grip on the throttle trying my best to avoid on-off gas. My KAOKO™ Cruise Control sorted all that out”. • Infinitely adjust the throttle resistance at the touch of a finger • Common applications • BMW K1600GT • BMW R1200GS LC • Triumph Explorer Anatomy of a Kaoko Kit Friction nut Replacement bar end Thrust washer Set screw 2mm Allen wrench Installation • Installation typically involves removal of original bar weight and replacing it with the Kaoko Unit… one screw removed, one tightened! Installation Photos Installation Photos Installation Photos Installation Photos Installation Photos Installation Tips • Thrust washer should push against plastic throttle sleeve, NOT rubber grip material • Use of replacement grips • If replacing grips, make sure outside edge of replacement grip is in the same location as the original. Trimming the replacement grip rubber and/or throttle sleeve may be necessary. Installation Tips • “Friction Nut” tension adjustment • A small grub screw (set screw) adjusts friction nut spin resistance. Out of the box, tension is NOT preset. • Adjustment is done via an included 2mm allen wrench. • Do not use Loctite on the set screw; use may cause the nut to freeze and get stripped the next time you try to adjust it. • Tension should be adjusted so that the Kaoko doesn’t spin freely (stays put when rotating throttle). Installation Tips • Most install problems caused by incorrect throttle assembly position • Many original throttle assemblies are “pinned” in the correct position on original bars and the position cannot be moved. This is GOOD – it ensures perfect fit/function of Kaoko throttle locks. • If using aftermarket handlebars or throttle assemblies, there are no pins holding the assembly in place. The installer may need to loosen/move/retighten the assembly in a new location for proper function. Installation Tips • Most returns caused by incorrect SKU being sold for the customer’s Make/Model/Year/Grip/Handlebar/Barend/Handguard combination. • Kaoko throttle locks are specific to original grips, handlebar, hand guards, and bar end weights. • Make sure you ask if the customer has modified any of the above components BEFORE selling a Kaoko. • When in doubt, get pictures of what is on the bike in advance of the sale. Compare customer’s photos to photos of original parts online. Use • To Engage • While rolling on, grip the friction nut between your small finger and palm of your hand. This action tightens the nut and sets the throttle to the desired opening. • The friction is such that the rider may still open and close the throttle. It simply has a slight rotational resistance to it. • To Disengage • While rolling off the throttle, grip the friction nut between your small finger and palm of your hand. • The throttle will open and snap closed freely when correctly disengaged. Safety • Each pre-production version is fully tested to a min of 60 • • • • • engagements It cannot lock It can be overridden in an instant Its operation is natural and instinctive There have been no safety related incidents 100% safe in the hands of a responsible and experienced rider Warranty • 5 year functional guarantee • 2 year cosmetic guarantee (powdercoat, etc.) • Warranty and tech support via Twisted Throttle • Replacement parts available • Warranty claims are rare • Supplied by independents • Fitment mostly by customer • Selling points: comfort, style, price • Pricing $20-$250 • SA market size: <12,000 Mechanical Wrist Support • Supplied by OEMs and some independents • Fitment mostly by supplier • Selling points: comfort, style, reliability, safety • Pricing from $1200 • Included in many new motorcycles • SA market size: <1,000 Mechanical Throttle Control Electronic Cruise Control Competitive analysis • Supplied by independents • Fitment by customer • Selling points: comfort, safety, price • Pricing less than $20 • SA market size: <480,000 Mechanical throttle controllers Kuryakyn • Metric cruiser, Harley, and Goldwing applications only, mostly chrome • Bike specific • Different technologies in each application (wrist supports, manual throttle, electro-magnetic throttle) • Pricing $20-250 Wunderlich • Bike specific (BMW only) • Opposite threading as Kaoko; must rotate against roll on to engage • Pricing $100+ • Buy in Europe off catalogue or online Kaoko • Practical and attractive product that is easy to install and use • Bike-specific (180+ applications and growing) • Pricing $130 - $200 Mechanical throttle controllers Throttle Meister • Attractive, high quality, easy to use, doesn’t take up grip space • More difficult to grip to engage/disengage due to smooth surface • Bike specific, but not compatible with aftermarket hand guards • Pricing $130-150+ BreakAway • Instant front break release • Difficult customized installation (requires trained technician) • Bike specific (7 makes) • Pricing $190-200 AKS Engineering “Kruzlocker” • http://www.aksengineering.com/kruzlocker • ¼ turn on/off function w/o adjustability • Very limited application range (fits BMW R1200GS ’05-’13, F800GS, F800R, and F650GS twin only as of 10/2015) • Pricing $149, not well known Mechanical throttle controllers Atlas Throttle Lock •Instant on/off switch, claimed 2 minute installation •New: launched with Kickstarter in 2014; active at tradeshows •Universal (one part fits all) •Stainless steel construction in black or silver •$135 retail Go Cruise / Omni Cruise •Adjustable tension thumbscrew on most models •No instant on/instant off •Universal, but difficult to adjust to work properly •Pricing $35 - $49 Vista Cruise •Cheap, quick, compact •Universal fit and bike specific •Pricing $20-30 Mechanical throttle controllers Original HD Throttle Control Screw (Cruisemate, Throttlemate) • Universal for HD and some metric cruisers • Pricing $25 for original HD thumbscrew, $17 - $40 w/ aftermarket lever • Kaoko w/ bar end weights has advantage of reducing vibration, functionally easier to use, and has aesthetic appeal.
