The Realty Review - Northwoods Association of REALTORS
The Realty Review Volume 5, Issue 11 November 2015 Northwoods Association of Realtors® & Greater Northwoods MLS® The Buzz: President’s Message 2016 Membership Renewal $50 Discount Expires 11/30 John Morris, NWAR Last month, NWAR hosted the Accredited Buyer’s Rep (ABR) designation class in Woodruff via live webcast from the WRA in Madison. The other attendees and I all agreed that this was a good way to earn a designation without the cost of travelling out of town, and we hope to offer more. Please take a look at NAR’s designations and let Matt know which ones interest you so he can pass that request on to WRA. The Strategic Planning Committee meets this Thursday, and we hope Members like you will send us your thoughts on what we can do to better serve you. Much of the meeting will focus on NAR’s Core Standards requirements including: Community involvement to support our neighborhoods and improve the perception of REALTORS Political advocacy in support of property rights Member services including various educational classes and networking events As always, we endeavor to achieve these goals while maintaining strict fiscal responsibility. Please contact me or Matt if you have thoughts to share on the future of NWAR/GNMLS. Habitat ReStore Opens in Back in September we received our dues statements, and I remind you to take advantage of the $50 discount and renew by 11/30. After 11/30, the amount due increases $50 from the total due on the statement. Half of you have already renewed, but that still leaves 200. Get on it and save an easy $50, OK? On a lighter note, I hope you will join us at the Christmas Party at Holiday Acres on December 8th. Doors open for cocktails at 5pm followed by dinner at 6:30. We have been there in the past and had not only good food but a great time. Here is wishing you and yours a great Thanksgiving! John NWAR/GNMLS Christmas Party - Rhinelander 12/8 To celebrate both the joyous season and the recent merger between NWAR and the Woodland Lakes Association, our 2015 Christmas Party will be at the Three Coins Restaurant at Holiday Acres Resort. Just east of Rhinelander on the shore of Lake Thompson, Three Coins features a lovely log and stone interior, a full bar and plenty of room for the swelling attendance at our general meetings. Let’s set the attendance bar even higher this year to celebrate the merger and meet some new faces! If you don’t live near Rhinelander and are wondering whether to go the distance, just check out the prices on the registration form on page 6. If you register by 11/24, you can subtract $5 per guest and enjoy a meal such as Chicken Marsala for only $15, Grilled Haddock for $20 or Prime Rib for $25 - all with salad, sides, rolls & dessert! If that’s not convincing enough, we are also awarding five $50 door prizes to lucky guests and will have a 50/50 fundraiser for Frederick Place. You may also win a free dinner if you bring an item to donate from their wish list. Last but not least, everyone who brings a “white elephant” gift will get one in return, and odds are what you receive will make a great Xmas gift for uncle Leo (odd fella that Leo). See p6 & register by 11/24 to save $5 each! Probably the most important news I have to share is that despite many months of diligent work with the law firm of Larson-Skinner, the MLS board was unable to negotiate a data feed contract with Zillow Group who recently severed their relationship with (and data feed from) ListHub. The board felt that several key items in Zillow’s proposed contract weren't in our members’ best interest, or at the very least were items each office should have the right to decide upon. In short, we don't want to be in the business of binding our members to negotiations with outside firms. What does this mean for you? Moving forward, the MLS board would like to provide a tool that will allow us to distribute listing feeds to various websites for those who desire to use that service. This dashboard-style option would allow each office to decide where their data is sent, with the costs shared only by those who choose to participate in this program. Before we can contract with a vendor to provide a dashboard service, we would like to gauge About the “Addendum TR” Form Yes, we are working with RealtyServer to add license numbers to the MLS. Nonetheless, the best place to obtain accurate and up-to-date license info will always be the DSPS website at: https://app.wi.gov/licensesearch The “Broker/Company License No” field on the form seems to be the biggest head-scratcher so here is what you need to do: Look up the agent’s license first, then view the “Relationships” tab - you should see a broker under the “Individuals” or company under the “Organizations” subheading. Next, go back to the search link above and do either an individual or organizational search for the name you found and under what sub-heading. The reason it could be either is that brokers are free to choose between operating as a sole proprietor or forming a company under which to register themselves and their agents. To learn more about the new TRID rules, visit: goo.gl/Rr8dgb member interest and will be asking for your feedback very soon! In the meantime, it is possible that an interruption of service to Zillow would require offices to enter their own listings into Zillow. We will keep our membership updated as details develop - keep an eye out! Despite a brief slowdown in our market during the holidays, I do so love this time of year and always try to soak in the peace and beauty of our winters. We would love to share the warmth with our members at the Christmas party on December 8th this year, but we need your reservations ASAP! I look forward to celebrating with you, and for all you hunters out there, I wish you a safe and successful season. Fondly, Bonnie Byrnes Habitat ReStore Now Open Since 1998, Habitat for Humanity Northwoods has helped promote homeownership by building simple, decent houses for people in the Northwoods. Through donations of money, materials and manpower, Habitat has already built 17 homes in that time. Just last month, Habitat opened a new ReStore at 1875 N Stevens St in Rhinelander that resells donated building materials, appliances, furniture & décor, fixtures and more. Proceeds from the sales help fund the construction of future Habitat homes. NWAR and our Members have been big supporters of Habitat for many years, and we invite you to help strengthen our partnership by visiting the ReStore sometime soon to drop off donations, shop for yourself or to help your customers decorate their new or newlylisted home. To make a donation to Habitat or to learn more about their new store, visit habitatforhumanitynorthwoods.com We’re Almost There -- Please Invest in RPAC! by RPAC Chairperson Cheryl Eskridge I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the generous RPAC contributors from both NWAR and WLAR. We are in our last two months of the year and because we have gained nearly 80 former WLAR Members, our RPAC goal has increased. I am asking all Members to please consider sending $45.00 instead of $35.00 with your dues statement to help us reach this loftier goal. We are a stronger organization with all the new Members, and I am certain we can reach the new goal if Members step up to show the same level of support for RPAC that it provides to REALTORS and homeowners throughout the year. Remember you can also control how your donation is disbursed by using the Direct Giver program for a contribution of at least $100.00. This is a great way for you to ensure your money is spent on the candidates you support, and your Direct Giver contribution will count towards our RPAC fundraising goal. I would also like to thank those larger donors who have helped us in the past and encourage you to please complete the amount you have chosen to give this year so we can finish the year strong. It has been my pleasure to volunteer as the RPAC Chairperson and I look forward to continuing on in 2016.
