What is SmartSound?
An Audio Tool For Visual People
SmartSound® is the first and only software to approach audio creation from a visual creator's
perspective - not a musician's. And, because of its patented, award winning technology, visually
creative people can open SmartSound and begin creating emotion packed, precisely timed
soundtracks with amazingly professional results - in minutes.
The Quicktracks system is a special version of SmartSound designed to integrate into the
Adobe Premiere Pro system, to allow for fast and easy soundtrack creation and editing for
Premiere users.
How It Works
It's simple. We take fully orchestrated, high quality, real music and sound effect files and embed
them with special information. This information allows our patented software process to
manipulate the audio in almost any way you choose - automatically. This gives you complete
control over the soundtrack creation process without the need for time consuming sound editing
or difficult music composition.
High-Quality & Royalty Free
SmartSound includes a library of many royalty-free, movie-quality selections written and
performed by top Hollywood professionals. These selections are designed to work with
SmartSound's technology, and integrated into Premiere so your movie scoring is done quickly
and easily.
Need More Music and Sound Effects?
The Audio Palette and Sound Palette series of CD-ROM’s lets you add as many "Smart
enabled" music and sound effects as you want - at your pace. Each palette contains plenty of
versatile selections within specific areas of interest - Action, Film Scoring, Documentary,
Narration, Romance, Commercials, Sound Effects and many more. And new palettes are
released every month - build exactly the collection you want for the types of projects you do.

Getting Started
Getting Started
Installation
To install Quicktracks:
1. Exit other Windows programs, and disable any virus-scanning software currently running
on your computer.
2. Put the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive.
3. The installer should automatically begin. If it does not, Select Start, Run. "D:\Setup.exe"
should appear in the Run menu. If this is the location of the installation CD, click OK. If
not, change the drive letter to be the location of the installation CD, or use the Browse
feature to find it.
4. The Welcome screen appears. Click Next.
5. Read the license agreement. If you accept the agreement, click Yes.
6. The installation program finds your Adobe Premiere Pro folder, and installs Quicktracks in
the Plug-Ins folder.
7. The registration screen now appears for you to register your software.
Registration
Quicktracks has an automatic registration feature which allows you to easily register your
software. When you complete the installation, the registration window appears automatically.
Fill out the information, click Send Online Registration and your registration will be sent to us.
You can email the registration, or you can print and mail the registration form (postage paid).
Why Register?
The most important reason to register your Quicktracks software is so we can notify you when
updates to the program are released. In addition, we will have your information on file to allow
for fast and accurate order processing and technical support assistance. You will also be
notified via email when new Audio and Sound Palettes are released, so you are aware of
available royalty-free music and sound effects that can be integrated into your Quicktracks
system.
When you run Quicktracks for the first time, you are asked if you want to migrate other
SmartSound music on your computer, so that Quicktracks can use the music (and to save you
the time of installing your other SmartSound music CDs again). If you do not have any other
SmartSound music on your computer, click No. Otherwise, click Yes. This may take several
minutes as the files are located and moved to the folder Documents & Settings\All
Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc. Note: If you have music located on other
hard drives, those files are NOT moved. Instead, Quicktracks adds a location path so that it
looks to that location for additional sound files.

Getting Started
Copying Sound Files to a Hard Drive
Quicktracks needs to access sound files from the Quicktracks CD while it is creating
soundtracks. However, you might find it convenient to copy the sound files to your hard drive so
the CD is not required. The instructions below can also be used to copy sound files from any of
our add-on Audio and Sound Palettes.
The disk space requirements for the Quicktracks sound files (called "Quicktracks Elements") is
approximately 600MB. If you have purchased additional SmartSound CDs, disk space
requirements for each 22k Palette is about 200MB; 44k Palettes need about 400MB each.
1. Insert the Quicktracks CD into your CD drive.
2. Open Premiere.
3. Choose File > New > SmartSound. Select Tools > Options.
4. The default folder for copying sound files is in Documents & Settings\All Users\Application
Data\SmartSound Software Inc. If you prefer to store your sound files in another location,
click the Folders tab.
5. Click Add Folder. Select the path where you would like your sound files stored. When
you add a folder, all subfolders are also added, so make sure you do not add multiple
paths to the same location.
6. When you have added the location you would like to use, select the location and click Set
Copy Destination. All sound files copied from this point forward will be placed in this
location until you specify otherwise.
7. Click the Libraries tab.
8. Select the Quicktracks Elements CD and click Properties. The tracks for this CD are now
listed. Highlight the track(s) you would like to copy and click Copy selection to drive.
This may take several minutes.
9. Click Ok.

Getting Started
6. Enter the soundtrack length in minutes, seconds, frames (mm:ss:ff) format.
7. Select the variation of the soundtrack you want.
8. Click Ok. Quicktracks asks you where to save the soundtrack. Select the desired drive
and directory to save the file. Click Save.
9. The saved soundtrack is automatically added to the Project window in Premiere.
10. Drag the soundtrack from the Project window into an audio channel in the Timeline.
11. Line it up within the audio channel with the appropriate start point for the video.
12. Repeat until you have all of the music you need for your video project.
Tutorial - Using Quicktracks
This tutorial walks you through creating a basic soundtrack for your video.
1. It’s helpful to have a video clip open when using Quicktracks, so you can see the length
your soundtrack needs to be. From Premiere, choose File > Import. Select a video clip
and open it.
2. Drag the clip from the project window into the video timeline and place it at 0:00.
3. It is important to note how long your soundtrack needs to be before running the
Quicktracks application. You can see the time length of the entire video clip from the
monitor window. If you want to score just a section of the video, you can use Premiere's
In and Out Points to easily calculate the time length of the soundtrack needed (the time
length between the In and Out Points is displayed in the lower right-hand area of the
monitor preview window). Let’s assume we want to score the entire clip, and let's assume
it's 30 seconds long.
4. From the menu choose File > New > SmartSound, then click Click here to select
music!.
5. The Maestro appears. There are three columns which are used to locate the music you
want for your scene. Each column has a drop-down selection box at the top (called a
"scope") to help search through your available music. In the first column, choose the
scope Find Music and click On My Computer.
6. In the second column, choose the scope Style and click New Age/Easy.
7. In the third column, choose the scope Instrument and click Fusion Band.
8. You can listen to each track displayed by selecting one (using the up and down arrows, or
clicking with your mouse) and pressing Play (the right-pointing triangle). We want
Innocence, so select this and click Select. The Maestro window is closed and you are
returned to the main menu.
9. Now enter the exact time length for the piece (in mm:ss:ff format; minute, second, frame).
Enter the time length for your video clip. Press the period (.) on the keypad to go to the
seconds entry. Then go to frame entry (Windows advances to the frame field after two
digits are typed in the seconds field).
10. Quicktracks now creates several arrangements of this piece of music for us. It has taken
the original composition and created as many variations as possible for the time length

given. Again, we can use the Preview button to listen to each variation. Each variation
has a different feel to it, even though each is created from the same piece of music.
Select Natural, and click Ok.
Quicktracks prompts you to save the soundtrack. You can specify a location for the file to
be stored, if desired. Press the Save button.
Premiere adds the soundtrack to your Project window. The soundtrack is now saved and
available for use with your video.
Any of Premiere’s audio tracks can be used for your soundtrack. For this example, we’ll
use Audio Track 1. Drag your soundtrack from the Project window to Audio Track 1. Line
it up so it starts at 0:00 (which is the beginning of the video clip).
Play your video from the Monitor window, Program view (right-hand side). You’ll hear the
audio played with the video.
Tutorial - Previewing and Buying Individual Music
Cuts
Quicktracks for Premiere Pro offers the ability to purchase and download individual pieces of
music from our vast royalty-free library. We have more than 50 CDs of music in our library of
music and sound effects, featuring a wide range of musical styles. Whether you need
something immediately or just need one piece for a project instead of a whole CD, our
downloadable singles option offers a cost-effective way of adding music to your Quicktracks
system. Prices for the music are displayed when you click the Purchase button.
Note: It is extremely important to keep all receipts from music you download, and to make
periodic backups of your entire computer. If your hard drive later crashes, a backup restores
your downloaded tracks back into Quicktracks. The receipts from your downloaded tracks also
have download instructions in case something happens to the original file.
You must have internet access available and active during this process.
1. If you have not previously done so, go to Options (from the Tools menu) and activate the
previewing of all music in our library. Click the Internet tab and check Automatically
download previews. Click Ok.
2. Launch the Maestro by selecting Click here to select music!.
3. In the first column, choose the scope Find Music and click All.
4. All SmartSound tracks available are now listed. You can use column two and column
three to refine your search.
5. When you have located the piece of music you would like to purchase, click on the track
name and click the Purchase button.
6. If you like the piece of music and want to buy the CD, you can choose to Purchase the
entire CD. The CD name is listed here, and you are brought to our web site for ordering.
7. If you would like to purchase only this piece of music, click to choose the quality of music

you would like. (At the time of this writing, only 44.1kHz quality is available.) The cost of
the piece is listed as well. Click OK.
The purchase screen appears. The purchase is powered by eSellerate, and your credit
card statement will show a charge from eSellerate for this download. Click Start.
Fill out your personal information. A valid email address is required for your receipt,
which includes instructions for re-downloading. The address information is your billing
address for your credit card statement. When complete, click Next.
The billing information screen appears. Enter your credit card information. Click Next.
A summary of your order appears. Click Submit.
Your credit card is approved and file transfer begins. When file transfer has successfully
completed, your credit card is charged. If the file transfer is NOT successful, your card
has not been charged.
When the file transfer has completed successfully, a final window is displayed indicating
that the sale is complete and an email is sent to you with a receipt and download
instructions. Click Done. The music is now available for use in Quicktracks.

Main Menu/Maestro
The Quicktracks Main Menu
SmartSound Quicktracks software is designed to simplify the soundtrack creation process by searching the soundtrack
libraries so you can find just the type of music you need for your video production. We do this with the Maestro, which
automatically finds pieces of music based on the type and style of music you select. The Maestro is also designed to
allow you to search for specific styles of music, and titles as well.
SmartSound Quicktracks can be accessed by selecting File > New > SmartSound. The Main Menu is displayed:
Recent —View your recently created soundtracks.
Favorites — Quickly locate any music you have marked as a favorite.
Tools — Access the Maestro or Options area.
Help — Access the manual online.
Name, Library, Length, Variation, Loop, Preview — Where you create your soundtrack and specify its configuration.
Ok — Saves the soundtrack listed to your Premiere Project window.
Cancel — Exits SmartSound, returning you to Premiere.
Creating Soundtracks using the Maestro
The core technology of the Quicktracks for Premiere Pro program is the Maestro. The Maestro allows you to quickly
sample and import SmartSound sound files into the Premiere Project window. You can search for music and sound
effects, and also search by instrument, by user-entered notes, or by favorites you have selected.
Access the Maestro by clicking on "Click here to select music!".
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (1 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
There are three columns in the top half of the Maestro screen. Each column features a drop-down box enabling you to
vary your search criteria by selecting what we call the "scope". As you change search criteria, Quicktracks defaults to
your last used setting the next time you access the Maestro.
The results of searches are displayed in the bottom half of the screen. The track name is listed, followed by the
SmartSound Library title, the type of music it is, and the intensity level of the music. You can click on any of these
column headings to sort by that column; click on a column heading again to sort in the opposite order. For example, if
you'd like to see the music listed in Intensity order, click the Intensity heading and it's listed from calmest track to most
intense track. Click the Intensity column heading again and it's listed from most intense track to calmest track. As you
modify the search columns above, the results list is updated and re-sorted in the order you have requested.
Searching for Audio - Column 1
The first scope is Find Music. You can also Find Sound Effects. Select the scope you want to use by clicking the
drop-down list and selecting one of these three options. You then have several search choices:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (2 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
All - Displays each piece of music in the SmartSound library, even if you don't own it.
On My Computer - SmartSound Audio files which reside on your hard drive(s) on in your CD-ROM drive these selections will not require insertion of a CD to access the music.
Owned by me - Any SmartSound piece of music or sound effect you own, even those you have not copied
to your hard drive.
Favorites - Any music or sound effect which you have specified is a favorite, by checking the "selection is
a favorite" check box.
With User Notes - Only music or sound effects which have user notes associated with them (entered by
selecting a piece and clicking "More Info").
As you select these options, the results list (displayed below) updates automatically.
Searching for Audio - Column 2
You have a variety of search options in this column as well:
Style - such as Blues, Classical, and Rock.
Intensity - such as Calm, Energetic, and Very Intense.
Library - display tracks from one particular library of SmartSound music, such as Cinematic Excellence or
Classical Masters.
Instrument - such as Clarinet, Big Band, and Flute.
Keyword - such as bluesy, brooding, and confident (SmartSound-determined list)
Selecting one of these items from the drop-down list in column two displays a list of that category. Select one of these
items and the results list is updated. You can further limit the results list by using Column 3.
Searching for Audio - Column 3
This column further refines your search list. The options available in Column 3 vary based on your previous choices for
Column 1 and 2.
Custom Search Using the Search Box
At the top of the Maestro window is a search box, where you can type in phrases to search through the library. All
library names, track names, descriptions, user notes, tempos, instruments and keywords are searched. Type in your
text and the search is automatic (no need to press Enter). For example, if you type in "blues" you'll see each piece of
music whose description has the word blues in it, whose keyword is blues, or whose title contains the word blues. If
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (3 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
you type in "117", you'll see every track whose tempo is 117 beats per minute.
Deciding Which Piece of Music Is Best
Now that you have searched through the Maestro to find music, there are likely many music choices available in the
results area. Select a piece of music and a summary of that musical piece is listed, including the Library name the
track is from, the type of music it is, the tempo, what instruments are used, and a description of the piece. You can
preview the piece of music by clicking the play bar in the lower right portion of the window. (If no preview is available,
the message "preview requires an Internet connection" is displayed instead.) Preview each piece of music to
determine which one best suits your needs.
You can change the display view in the lower portion of the Maestro window by clicking on the title to each column.
Clicking the title sorts by the contents of that column. For example, if you click the Title column, the list is sorted
alphabetically by the title:
If you then click the Title heading again, the list is rearranged in reverse alphabetical order:
There are several icons listed to each name, which indicate the status of that piece of music. Here is a legend of each
icon:
Icon
Description
Sound file owned, on CD not currently mounted
Sound file on a mounted CD (CD in drive)
Sound file resident on hard drive
Not owned, but can be previewed and purchased
Can be previewed, but not purchased
If you own the music but it has not been copied to your hard drive, you are prompted for the CD and can copy just that
track to the hard drive, if desired. If you do not own the piece of music, but would like to purchase it, click the
Purchase button. You have the option of purchasing and downloading just this piece of music, or you can order the
entire SmartSound CD this piece is from.
When you have finished previewing the music and have decided on the appropriate piece, highlight the track and click
Select.

Main Menu/Maestro
Selecting a Variation
When you have selected a piece of music, the Maestro closes and the Main Menu appears with the music filled in.
Enter the length of time you need your soundtrack to be (formatted in MM;SS;FF minutes; seconds; frames). You can
use Premiere's In and Out Point selectors to determine the length of the scene you need to score.
Note: As of the time of this writing, Premiere does not allow us to read marker information. We hope that a future
update of Premiere Pro will add this ability. In the meantime, you will need to know the time length of your clip before
launching Quicktracks.
Once the time has been entered, Quicktracks creates as many arrangements of the music as possible for the time
length indicated. Each variation will be within 1/2 second of the length requested. You can listen to the variations
by selecting a variation from the list (as seen above) and clicking the Preview play button.
Looping
Quicktracks has the ability to create a looping soundtrack. Looping soundtracks are programmed to repeat indefinitely;
when the end of the soundtrack is reached, it starts over again from the beginning. This is particularly useful for DVD
and web site creators who do not know the length of time someone will be on a particular screen or menu.
On the Quicktracks main menu there is a check box where you can indicate "Loop". If this box is checked, Quicktracks
creates a looping soundtrack for the time length you have indicated. This can be a challenge, though, since
Quicktracks makes sure the soundtrack is musically accurate. The loop must maintain a musical point from which to
repeat, and therefore Quicktracks cannot guarantee a loop will be to a tenth of a second accurate. (Quicktracks will,
however, aim for within several seconds of the given time length indicated.) The longer the time given, the more likely
Quicktracks will be able to create a loop.
When you check the Loop box, Quicktracks requires extra time while it tries to generate several arrangements of the
loop for the piece of music you specified at your requested time length. Please be patient; it may take up to a minute to
generate the soundtracks. If no selections appear in the Variations list, try modifying the time length specified. You
may have specified a time too short or too long for Quicktracks to generate a good loop.
Saving your Soundtrack
When you select "OK" for your soundtrack, Quicktracks displays the save window:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (5 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
Choose the directory where to save the soundtrack. The name of the soundtrack defaults to "SmartSound - track name
- variation - time length". Click the Save button to save the soundtrack. Premiere automatically adds your soundtrack
to the Project window for use in your project.
Note: The audio quality format of the soundtrack is determined by your Premiere project. For example, if your project is
set to 48kHz, the soundtrack is converted to 48kHz automatically.
You can modify how the name of the soundtrack defaults through the Tools menu. Select Tools > Export File Naming.
You'll see the following screen:
When you save a soundtrack, the name of the soundtrack will be formatted based on this setting. If you prefer having
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (6 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
the filename default to a different name, just enter the codes here and the save window will use this setting. For
example, let's say you are using the CD Full Spectrum, and have chosen the track name Innocence, with the variation
Crystallize, which is 00:47:05 in length. Below are examples of how the filename will default:
#TAG - #TT - #W [#MM;#SS;#FF]
SmartSound - Innocence - Crystallize [00;47;05]
#W - #TT - #LL - #TAG
Crystallize - Innocence - Full Spectrum - SmartSound
Using Soundtracks with Premiere
Once your soundtrack is in the Premiere Project window it can be added to your project. In the Timeline you have
three audio tracks to choose from. To add a soundtrack to your video, drag the soundtrack from the Project window to
one of the audio tracks. While dragging, line up the soundtrack to the place in the timeline where the soundtrack
should start.
The soundtrack appears in the audio portion of the timeline. You can move the soundtrack on the timeline by dragging
the soundtrack along the timeline.
If you expand the audio track, the wave display of the soundtrack appears. This can be helpful so you can see where
the peaks in the music are located, to easily line them up with the visuals. To expand the audio track, click the
right-pointed arrow preceding the word "Audio 1", "Audio 2", etc.
Theming Your Production
Many producers use music as a theme throughout their project. Music can be used to tie the project together, and to
represent specific actions or characters. Quicktracks’s ability to create multiple versions of the same piece of music
simplifies the ability to theme a production. The same piece of music can have different feels to it, enabling the same
piece of music to work with different types of scenes.
For example, you can pick one piece of music to represent a particular character in your video. Each time the
character is featured, you can use the same piece of music to represent the character. By using different versions of
the same piece of music, you can represent different moods to match the action in the video.
Cross-fades and Overlaps
You can use Premiere’s multiple audio channels to cross-fade and overlap soundtracks. Premiere provides unlimited
audio channels for adding narration, music, and sound effects to your video project. You can add your soundtracks to
any of these audio channels. If you want to do an overlap between two soundtracks, you can use two audio channels
to easily achieve this:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (7 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
In the first audio channel, add the first part of your soundtrack. In the second audio channel, add the second part of
your soundtrack. If you drag the second soundtrack to start 1 second before the first soundtrack ends, an overlap will
occur. If you drag the second soundtrack to start at any point where the first soundtrack is located, the two soundtracks
will play concurrently.
If the first soundtrack has a fade-out during the last second, no adjustment may be necessary. However, you may
need to adjust the volume levels at the end of Soundtrack 1 and the beginning of Soundtrack 2 to have the cross-fade
sound smooth.
Premiere Pro has built-in volume adjustments should you need to modify volume levels of your soundtrack. Premiere
also has a built in cross-fade button which automatically performs a cross-fade on your soundtracks. Line the
from the
soundtracks up as above, where they are overlapping on different tracks. Select the cross-fade tool
Timeline tool bar. Then click on the first soundtrack, then the second soundtrack. You will see the rubberbands
adjusted for you.
Modifying Soundtracks
When Quicktracks soundtracks are saved they are automatically added to the Project window. You can then drag the
soundtracks into Premiere’s audio channels to add music to your production.
Once the soundtrack has been added to the Timeline, length changes cannot easily be made. (We hope with a future
update of Premiere Pro this will be available; however, with the version available as of this writing, it is not possible.
Make sure to register your software to be informed of program updates that may allow this to be implemented.)
You can double-click the soundtrack to make changes to the time length and/or the variation of music that is
selected. You'll need to re-save the soundtrack with the same filename to implement the change onto the Timeline.
Some variations may be slightly longer or shorter than the original selection. If the new variation is different by a
few frames, this is fine. If the change is substantially shorter or longer, you'll see a warning icon appear:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/maestro.html (8 of 9) [9/25/2003 1:53:44 PM]
Main Menu/Maestro
Too Short
Too Long
Should these appear, re-save the soundtrack with the same filename. For shorter clips, manually drag the end of the
block on the Timeline to match the new length. To lengthen, exit your project, then re-open and resize the block longer.
Importing Previously Saved Soundtracks
Once a soundtrack is saved, it is available to use in your Premiere project. While it is possible to import previously
saved soundtracks into new projects, we do not recommend you do this. Imported soundtracks (through the File >
Import command, or through the File > Open command) are pulled into your project, but are not "Smart". That is, if
you double-click on the soundtrack, it does not launch the Maestro and offer you a quick way to edit the soundtrack.
Instead, when you start a new project, you should start new soundtracks to accompany the project.
Exiting Quicktracks without saving
At any point in the modification process you can exit without saving by clicking the Cancel button in the lower left of the
Quicktracks screen. This closes Quicktracks without saving your changes.

Setup Options
Setting Preferences/Options
The Options window allows you to manage your music and set internet access settings. To
access, Tools > Options from the main menu. Below is an explanation of the available options:
About tab: General information about Quicktracks for Premiere Pro.
Libraries tab:
The libraries tab displays each SmartSound library you have installed, as well as any online
purchases you have made. It also indicates if each library's sound files have been copied to
your hard drive. SmartSound Quicktracks for Premiere Pro includes 23 pieces of music to get
you started. The music varies in style and mood. They are listed in the Librarian under
"Quicktracks Elements". As you add additional SmartSound CDs, their names are listed here.
Select the library and choose Properties if you'd like to see a list of each selection for that
library:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/options.html (1 of 6) [9/25/2003 1:53:57 PM]
Setup Options
You can then copy additional pieces of music to your hard drive if you have not done so
previously, or remove selections if you no longer need the selection on your hard drive.
Folders tab:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/options.html (2 of 6) [9/25/2003 1:53:57 PM]
Setup Options
The folders tab lets you specify folders where your sound files are located. The default location
is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc.
Folders can be on other hard drives, if desired. When new libraries are added and you choose
to copy the sound files to your hard drive, the sound files are copied to the copy destination you
have selected. You can adjust this location at any time by selecting a new location and clicking
the Set Copy Destination button.
Internet tab:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/options.html (3 of 6) [9/25/2003 1:53:57 PM]
Setup Options
Internet tab: If your computer is always connected to the internet, you can choose to have
preview sound files download automatically as you need them. Previews are available for the
entire SmartSound library - not just selections you already own. So as you are previewing
music, each piece of music you want to listen to is downloaded for you. Click the box for
"Automatically download previews" for this option to take effect.
You can also check for updates by selecting the "Check For Updates Now" button in the Library
Updates section. This looks for updates to music files, documentation, and more. A connection
to the internet is necessary for this option to work, and you may select this option as often as
desired. If updates are found, they are listed and you have the option to install each update.
If you want to be reminded to check for updates, just click the box for "Show an Update
Reminder" and choose either Weekly or Monthly from the drop-down list.
Migration tab:
file:///Cube/Users/sharonmorgan/Development/Documentation/QXP Pro/options.html (4 of 6) [9/25/2003 1:53:57 PM]
Setup Options
Migration tab: When Quicktracks is first run, the migration option runs automatically. If you do
not migrate your libraries and sound files during the initial application launch, you can use this
menu option to perform your migration. Migration helps you consolidate your SmartSound
libraries and sound files to a common location for all SmartSound applications to use. Here you
can choose either to select a specific folder to search, or search all hard drives.
Check for Updates Option
You can check for updates to deliver items such as new library preview files when released and
updated documentation. If updates to the application are available, information about
downloading the application update is also included. We recommend running this update
periodically, so you can preview the latest music and have access to the latest tutorials and
documentation.
An option is built into Quicktracks which reminds you to periodically check for updates. You
have the option to connect to the internet before the update check executes.
To schedule a check for library and documentation updates, select View > Options > Internet.
Click the check box for Show an update reminder. Then select either Weekly or Monthly from
the Show reminder: drop down box.

Adding More Music to Quicktracks
Adding More Music
There is a large volume of royalty-free SmartSound-encoded music for your Quicktracks
program to add additional music selections. Audio Palettes contain music; Sound Palettes
contain sound effects. Once installed, they show up automatically in the appropriate categories
within the Maestro. Copy to the hard drive if you have the space, otherwise Quicktracks
prompts you for the CD when you are previewing or saving the piece.
Professional (44.1k) versus Multimedia (22k) when buying SmartSound Palettes
44.1k and 22k refer to the sample rate of the source sound files which Quicktracks uses. The
higher the sample rate, the better the sound quality. It mainly effects the way the highest
frequencies sound. Cymbals, bells, and other high frequency information is most accurately
reproduced at 44k. Audio CDs you buy in a store are at 44k. Many people producing video
tapes prefer the 44k sound.
However, the higher the sample rate, the larger the sound file. Files stored at 44k are twice as
big as files at 22k. 22k is more than adequate for multimedia type applications. Our 22k files
are enhanced for improved quality.
Quicktracks and Premiere allow you to export at any rate you want. For example, even if you
start with 22k 16bit Stereo, you can export at 11k 8bit Mono. You can start with 22k and export
at 44k, but you won't really gain anything by up-sampling; the final can't be better than the
source. If you purchase a 22k CD, you can upgrade to 44k at a later time if desired.
You can see a listing of our add-on Audio and Sound Palettes, you can audition them, and you
can see a track-by-track listing of each CD at www.smartsound.com/music, or click on the Web

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
Below are some common questions and their solutions. You can also access our special web
page for Premiere users by choosing the Technical Support web link from our Main Menu, or by
visiting www.smartsound.com/products/premiere/.
--- I can’t get any sound
Check that speakers have power and audio chords are plugged into the line out on the back of
the computer.
From the Taskbar, double-click the speaker icon on the right side. The "Volume Control"
window will appear. Make sure the volume controls are up and mute is not checked.
From the Start menu, choose "Control Panel/Sounds & Audio Devices". From the "Audio" tab,
choose the Playback "preferred device". If there are no options, your sound card is not working
properly. This is a System level problem, not caused by Quicktracks. Refer to the
documentation or technical support for the sound card or computer manufacturer. Sound card
configuration problems can often be solved by choosing the "Advanced" button and modifying
the settings.
--- I can't download a single. I get an error message 5236:4598
This error is due to restrictions you or your company have placed on downloaded content from
the internet. The most common cause of this error is due to a firewall on your computer
restricting content. You will need to modify the restrictions of the firewall to allow for your single
to download.
--- Can I use SmartSound music in my productions/products?
The short answer is YES! That's what SmartSound is all about... making your life simple when it
comes to using music in your multimedia projects and videos. As long as SmartSound music is
used as part of a visual, narrative, or web site production, you may use it royalty-free.
You can even use the music for broadcast. You don't have to pay any additional money to us.
However, you may be required by the TV station to file cue sheets which credit the composer of
the music you use. This is the TV station’s or TV network’s responsibility and shouldn’t cost
you anything. The TV stations pay a blanket license to play music on their shows.
You should read the complete license agreement for more specific details.
--- How can I find out about updates to my Quicktracks program?
If you registered your Quicktracks software you will be automatically notified by email when
updates are released. We also recommend you periodically check our Quicktracks for Premiere
web site at www.smartsound.com/products/premiere/index.html for the latest information,
helpful hints, FAQ’s, and updates (if necessary).
